[Elecraft] Elecraft] K3 DVR Audio

2011-02-20 Thread Roy Davis
Hello,

I don't know if this subject has been briught up, if it has please excuse my
not seeing it.

The DVR for my K3 put in place today has an anomoly. It makes recordings
for on the air transmissions fine. But it seems to have what sounds like a
popping or staticy presence to the audio. The quality of the audio itself
is great.

The problem exists whether the K3 is in transmit or test mode.

Has anyone had the same experience and a fix.

I plan to take the K3 to Costa Rica at TI5N , for the SSB Contest, and would
like to clear up the problem before leaving.

Thanks,
Roy - WK4Y

Re: [Elecraft] RTTY via FSK-D

2010-07-01 Thread Roy Davis
Is the duty cycle of the K3 so that it will handle 100 watts output safely
in a cw or rtty contest?

At home I use a amplifier with 40 watts of drive. But, I would like to be
able to operate portable at the river with just the K3 in a cw or rtty
contest if it can handle the continious duty on these modes.

Re: [Elecraft] 43' Vertical

2009-03-16 Thread Roy Davis
Thank you to all who responded to my post. The one thing in common that all
of you taught me is that the radials need not be exact when on or in the
ground.
I am using insulated wire for the radials because it is what I have on hand.
I do have a lawn edger and will bury them as suggested just under the
surface. As soon as the rains go away I will finish up the job.

Several suggestions presented by all will be tried. I appreciate your
input, and will post again after completion and tests.

Thanks

Roy, I would use #12 stranded house wire for the radiators like you buy at
home depot and just use two of them. Or if you have some other wire on
hand, use that. It does not make much difference, but standard is #14 or
bigger for physical strength. Don't spend too much time making the
radials resonant because if you bury them they will be detuned. It does
not matter how far under ground they are. I just hold mine down with some
of the hooked wires used to tie chain link fence to keep the lawn mower
from picking them up until the grass grows over them. If you cut a slit,
make it only about and inch or so deep, cut it with a lawn edger and push
the wire in with a stick. 64 radials surely should be enough. I have 5
on my 160/80 inverted L that are 50 feet long. I could probably use more,
but I have worked DXCC on 40 with a vertical with only one radial 30 feet
 long.

I am in the process of building a 40 meter 1/4 wave
 vertical. My hopes for
this antenna is that when the conditions favor vertical
 antennas as opposed
to a dipole, that it will help me to work in to the far
 East as my dipole
does not. I understand that a dense radial field is
 necessary for good
results and that the far field which I have no control is a
 factor. My plan
is to use 64 insulated radials as close to resonant as
 possible, buried a
few inches below soil. I thought of using ladder line as
 the radiator,
cutting one side for 40 and the other for 30 meters
 supported by a catenary
line. If that does not prove out, I have aluminum tubing
 which to make a
1/4 wave for 40. Anyone have any comments pro or con for
 my project? So
far, I have the pipe in the ground, and the radials cut
 ready to attach to
 the DX Engineering radial plate.

I have K3 #1366 and really like this radio. A lot to offer
 in such a small
 package.

 3 db is about 1/2 S

 You are correct about
the far field conductivity being very important in how
 a vertical antenna

 the radiation

The 43 foot vertical will have a higher radiation

 get the efficiency up.
It will still be lower than 50 ohms for 160, 80 and 60

ohms for 40 and higher for the upper frequencies. I
 don't have one
because I have a 3 element SteppIR with the 30/40

play well. I have worked several of the Zero-Five
 offering and they all
play well. I would expect the DXE, Hygain and MFJ to

A few years ago, I was really on the 5/8 vertical bandwagon.
I thought it was the cat's meow. The problem was that
real world A/B testing did NOT show it to be any better than
 a 1/4 wave vert.

I had a 5/8 wave vert for 15 meters. Ground mounted over
16 radials. An ATU at the base took care of the small
impedance mismatch and RG-213 carried the signal to the rig.
Hot stuff - or so I thought.

I also had a 1/4 wave ground plane (4 radials) on the roof
of my single story house. It was fed with RG-58. I spent a
lot of time with an A/B switch listening to both antennas.
 You'd think the 5/8 with it's mondo low-angle
radiation pattern would walk all over the 1/4 wave but it
DID NOT. DX signals as the band was just opening or closing
were sometimes stronger on the 5/8, other times on the 1/4.
 There was no clear winner.

It was years before I found the answer.

Apparently, that wonderful low angle radiation that we want
out of the 5/8 wave antenna depends HEAVILY on the ground
conductivity many, many wavelengths away from the antenna.
Far out of the reach of any ground radial system, poor soil
conductivity is sucking the low angle radiation down to near
zero. Sure, over salt water it is fabulous, but for the
vast majority, it just doesn't pan out that way.

So, for normal soil, it seems the best height
is something less than 1/2 wave.

 I run a 33' vertical with a Hustler 80M resonator on
top. It resonates on 80 and 40 and does pretty well on
those two bands. It also delivers the goods on 30 meters
due to the remote tuner. On 20 meters and higher it
 isn't really all that impressive.

[Elecraft] Future Feature Request

If it is possible and practical from a programming aspect, the following would
be a nice feature to have in the K3.

To have each menu function screen numbered and a sheet for reference with the
menu settings and there numbers listed. It would make finding what you are
looking for quicker and easier when in the config. mode.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 feature request - I want Ducking!

  Hey troops,

I had an idea last night while in CW QSO with my K3. I've noticed that I
always turn the AF gain down when I send CW. I have the side tone volume set
to just the right level for the Spot function to work, but when I send CW I
want to greatly reduce the distraction from the receiver. I still want to hear
it, but not be distracted by it.

That got me thinking about ducking. Boy, would it be cool if the K3 would
duck the receiver under the CW side tone. I'd want it to be engaged only when
sending (not for spot) and I'd like the AF gain reduction to be adjustable
through a menu setting.

I guess another way to implement this might be to have the side tone affect
the AGC so when I send, my RX responds as if it were a real signal and the AGC
kicks in to quiet the receiver. In this case, I'd want to set the amount of
gain reduction and whether to use Fast or Slow recovery.

Thanks for the comments to all replied. I understand Keith's viewpoint.
But, Yaesu has this and has made changes where the items did not stay the
same. But I don't see updating the sheet a problem. If they are able to do
it to the firmware, I would think that each update would overwrite the old

Individually numbering each menu item could prove to be awkward. If you
assign numbers 1 through 'n' now, what happens when you insert something
later? It gets number n+1 but it may appear out of numeric order as you
surf through the menu system. Same thing happens if you move an item
around. If an item is deleted or replaced by 2 items, then I suppose you'd
have to retire the original number. So instead of a nice clean listing of
numbers 1 through N, you'd have a sparse list of items 1 through N that
probably are not in numerical order when you look for them in the menu
system.

[Elecraft] Unable to do PSK

2009-01-12 Thread Roy Davis
I have a digital question.

I am using the ACC port on the K3 to do RTTY (FSK D). I have a box that was
made for me with the appropriate parts for this function. The cable with
the box from the ACC is connected to a com port on the computer. Also I
have a audio cable (Stereo) connectors on each end going from the Line out
of the K3 to the Line In on my desktop computer. It works very well on
RTTY.

I decided to try PSK, and have tried the following method without success.

Since theis cable worked with RTTY in FSK-D I thought it should work for
PSK. I tried the same setup with the K3 with DATA MD set to PSK-D 31 bps.
I am able to transmit a signal but I have been told there is no printout on
the receive end.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 in Carry-on Luggage

2009-01-02 Thread Roy Davis
I went to Bonaire NA and participated with the PJ4E Group in the 2008
CQWWSSB Contest. I took my K3 and accessories in a hard-shell Porter
brand carry-on case. This is a excellent case, has wheels and handle for
pulling along, and it will fold down to accommodate other cases to be on top
as you pull it along. Great for having to go from one end of the airport to
another for your gate. I beforehand took it to a place who foamed to fit
all pieces in the case.

I found not too much difference in the US airports than the airports in the
Caribbean. Some asked what it was, some had enough experience to know or
ask if it was Ham Radio equip. It was dusted once on return to Miami. I
was told that was because I failed to place it in a rubber tub alone that
time. Go figure. However, the airport security people in all cases were
polite. The biggest hassle for me was to unload all the gear into the
separate tubs, and as well my personal items, trying not to hold up the line
behind me. But the way the world is now, it is a necessary thing in order
to protect us.

My K3 performed magnificently in the contest.

I am sure this has been addressed, but I cannot find where I may have

My KRX3 sub receiver doesn't seem to have the sensitivity as the main

Re: [Elecraft] K3- How Robust iis the Tuner?

2008-10-13 Thread Roy Davis
Just for information, DX Engineering has a good page on their website
(Choosing the correct balun). They recommend current type baluns, but
different ratios for different antenna. I use a multi band dipole fed with
ladder line. I use what they recommend for a multi band dipole. The
antenna is cut for the lowest frequency to operate, and use a 1.1 Balun.
The ladderline is 1/8 multiples of the lowest frequency to operate. I use
the 450 ohm ladder line because it was on hand, 300 ohm is what's
recommended.

With this setup my Palstar tuner tunes easily, and the K3's tuner tunes
easily as well when used alone with the antenna.

I hope this of interest to the group.

Maybe it needs to be more robust? Last week I was attempting to tune a
short ladderline fed (via a balun) doublet on 80 meters using the KAT3. The
tuner successfully tuned the system for the cw part of the band, but had
trouble on 75 meters. I tried retuning a few times, and noted smoke and a
burning smell. Now antennas connected to the ANT1 connector are deaf, while
using the ANT2 connector the tuner works fine.

I've successfully used this antenna on 80 meters using an external manual
Palstar balanced tuner, but never got a match using the internal tuner in
my IC756. While the IC756 tuner cannot provide a match, it never was
damaged in my attempts.

On the bright side, Elecraft support is sending a replacement KAT3, no
questions asked.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Noise Gate

2008-10-12 Thread Roy Davis
Hello All,

Has anyone experienced the following;

ERR TXF message - when transmitting on FM and AM modes. When you key up the
message appears, and as long as you hold the key down, you can transmit. But
after releasing the key, it will not transmit again in the mode. You can reset
the radio by moving to a different mode.

Is it possible in my inital setup I missed turning on a parameter? I have
looked in the menu, but I do not see where I made a mistake.

Thanks,

Roy - WK4Y

[Elecraft] Re: K3 Noise Gate Function

2008-10-11 Thread Roy Davis
I down loaded the Beta 2.46 version with no glitches. I haven't noticed so far
any problems created by it.

However, when using the Noise Gate function, after quieting the back ground
noise, in between words I hear a crackling or static sound in the headset. I
haven't spoke with someone yet to know whether it is heard on the air. I
suppose it is not.

But it is annoying. Has anyone else had this to happen, and is there a cure
for it?

I think the noise gate feature has been long over due in the radios
manufactured. Thanks Elecraft!

Hello Roy!

Thank you for trying the new TX GATE feature.

However, when using the Noise Gate function, after quieting the back
ground noise, in between words I hear a crackling or static sound in the
headset. I haven't spoke with someone yet to know whether it is heard
on the air. I suppose it is not.

But it is annoying. Has anyone else had this to happen, and is there a
 cure for it?

Increase the threshold further. Noise peaks are not uniform, and as you
increase the threshold you'll find that most of the noise stops but
occasional peaks still get through, resulting in the crackling you are
hearing.

Hear cracklies? Keep increasing the threshold! After they stop,
increase it a bit more.

Another possible approach: Listening on the MON function, find the
*highest* level you can use (where your voice starts to get chopped) and
then set the threshold about midway between that point and the point
where the crackling noise stopped.

[Elecraft] Xmit Audio

2008-10-02 Thread Roy Davis
I have had a couple of stations report a gravely or sort of overtone on my K3's
xmit audio. Not everyone reports this, but more than one has. Has anybody had
a similiar experience? Could it posibly be RF? This was not noticed with
another radio when in line.

Thanks for any help.
