is 50.276 MHz. Almost all 6M JT65 signals that I've seen have been using JT65A.

Congrats on taking the first step working this mode.

I have found that on the super weak signals (less -20dB), stronger signals in a

2.5KHz pass band can push already weak signals farther into the noise to the

point that they can not be copied. That's where the 3M's Hi-Cut and Lo-Cut

controls come in handy. If you view a very weak trace on the JT65HF waterfall in

the presence of loud (0 to -5 dB) signals, then tighten the filters you will see

the weaker trace improve (get thicker).

I only wish that the K3 filter (Hi, Low and BW) adjustment increment could be

reduced from the present 100Hz to 50Hz or even 25Hz. This would allow the

attenuation of QRM from very loud signals that are very near in frequency to

very weak ones without affecting the weak signal's data.

I hope that this suggestion could be considered in a future K3 firmware update.

Have fun with JT65 as you watch the paint dry :-).

For many years, I've used a clock setting program distributed by NIST called

can be set to do a re-sync as often as you like. I don't know how good it is at

compensating for network delays, but it thinks its setting the clock to an

accuracy of tens of msec. To get that level of accuracy you need to use it 2-3

times in succession.

All this talk about WSPR and JT65 motivated me to download, install, and study

the doc for both Joe Taylor's software and W6CQZ's HF version.

Made my first contacts last night on 10139 kHz with VK and ZL running about 25W

to the K3 and an 80M dipole. A JT65 contact is sorta like watching paint dry,

but I couldn't even hear the ZL that I worked, and there was a lot of other

activity within the passband that the software worked around. I'm convinced

that the W6CQZ version is the way to go for HF work.

Next step is to figure out how to use JT65A during 6M openings. Is there a

calling frequency where everyone sets up shop on 6M in North

America? Which modulation scheme(s) are most used for E-skip?

[Elecraft] Heil IC mic

2011-04-30 Thread don Swetzig
I just hooked a hand held Heil with the IC element I just purchased. nbsp;I
got this one as I liked the performance of the Heil headseat with this element
that I purchased with the rig from Elecraft.

Now after getting it connected it seems like a dead mic compared to the
headseat. nbsp; I have cranked up the gain from low to high and I still need
the mic line in setting at 45. nbsp;The original head set needed low gain and
the line in set to 10 for full ALC action.

Also the power meeter on the tuner shows lower power with this mic. nbsp;

Am I missing something with the handheld setup as I really liked the
performance of the IC in the proset

Thanks

I hope someone can help me as I tried to update the firmware onto my K3

this afternoon. I first tried it five times getting ERR DSE E202 on

the K3, and xE26 on the K3Util screen with the details as DSP1

verification failed, and version verification number failed. Then I

deleted the K3Util program, and connected an Ethernet cable to my

laptop, then reloaded the K3Util software. Tried another five tines with

the same error results. I read all the notes online, and I'm stumped.

All the other firmware loads fine.

Are you getting enough audio into the K3? Set the K3 to TX TEST and

look at the ALC bargraph. You should have 4 bars lighting solid with

the 5th bar possibly blinking.

If you are not seeing that indication on the ALC meter in the K3, you

are not driving the Line-in with enough audio.

The K3 ALC meter is also a VU meter on the lower part of the scale.

Indication below 5 bars indicate no ALC is being generated - ALC action

begins with the 5th bar. So if you followed the old advice that you

should not have any ALC indication for DATA modes, that old advice must

be modified for the K3.

The K3 Line-in expects to see line level signals. If you are using an

external interface, some by default use microphone level for the output

and you must change a jumper in the box to bring it up to line level.

If you have already turned on VOX in DATA-A mode and nothing works still, try
measuring the sound card's audio with a multimeter. Something like an old
Fluke 76 can easily read AC waveforms of 2 kHz. A scope would be much better,
of course, or some sound card program that behaves like an audio scope.

See if you can set the sound card output to put out around 250 mV to 350 mV RMS
when the software is transmitting. If you can, and you are using the rear
panel Line Input, then set the Mic Gain to 6 and VOX gain to 022 for starters.

If nothing measurable comes out of the sound card, your problem is on the
computer end, not on the radio end.

When cocoaModem users have birth pangs, I always ask them to first select the
computer's built-in speakers and see if they can hear anything from the
speakers when they transmit. Then, switch over to the sound card that is
connected to the radio. This removes the operator shorted to ground problem.

This is my first post to this reflector and would like to share some of my
observations.

First. I have a 4xxx series K3, built by Elecraft that is fully outfitted and
filtered running LP-Pan, an EMU-0202 and a MicroHam Station Master.

Second, I have been operating an IC-7700 for the past 2 yrs.

That being said I have run both rigs side-by-side into a IC-PW1 and Palstar
AT-Auto.

I must say that each radio has its own benefits and is outstanding to operate,
but here is where the K3 shines:

1. True dual VFO/dual receive;

2. Easy MARS modification (yes, I am a licensed AF MARS Operator);

3. IF out. LP-Pan and PowerSDR are outstanding;

4. ESSB - of course with the proper filtering being installed;

5. Tx Eq and Noise Gate - No out-board W2IHY EQ is needed (sorry Julius);

6. Light weight;

7. Unbelievable receive audio with the appropriate filtering;

8. Menu flexibility;and

9. Easy updating of firmware.

Candidly, I still love and use the IC-7700, but more and more I am utilizing
the K3. The K3 is an outstanding value and robust transceiver.

As a separate matter (a bit of a rant here), and for example having seen the
ARRL and Sherwood engineering reports regarding the FTDX-5000. We as hams are
always in search of nirvana. While I have heard the issues regarding the
FTDX-5000 design that have not made the mainstream press, the issue here is not
to bash Yaesu, but to congratulate and thank Wayne and Eric for the OUTSTANDING
job, not only with the design and operation of the K3, but their support of the
user group to identify issues and improvements and their outstanding customer
support when you call them for assistance. Kudos to Elecraft.

This is a very good discussion and it is spot on for a new K3 owner.

I have owned my K3 for about one month and I have struggled to learn how to use
this radio. nbsp;So a fairly new ham and a high feature radio are not
necessarly a great fit. nbsp; So yes for guys like me some tutorials would be

That all stated above between elecraft support and this group I have a radio

The idea of online video makes a lot of sense to me as this type of info jump
