[Elecraft] Mathematically challenged
I want to try and build an HF two Element Vertical Antenna for 20 meters. While there are several java scripted web-sites that will calculate and provide the physical measurements for the Driven, Reflector elements and spacing. I would like to use my MJF-259 to complete the fine tuning during construction and given that the frequency of the Driven element will not be the resonant frequency of the reflector. What would a good equation be to determine the resonant frequency for the reflector based on the desired frequency for the Driven element? Some references that I have found state the Reflector is approximately 4% longer than the Driven and the Director is 4% shorter, with element spacing 0.15 to 0.25 of the desired freq. I would like something a little more specific. Not that I can build it to spec or that the MFJ259 will be that accurate, I would still like to work with figures that provide something other than approximate. 73 K2CG Chuck G. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Mathematically challenged
Joe, Making and working with a Phased array is also on my to-do list but I plan on building the phase box. For now I want to play with a vertical beam and using the planned operarting frequency times 1.05 gives me the resonant freq for the reflector provides me the information that I want to use when adjusting the reflector with my MFJ259. My thanks to everyone that replied. Being Mathematically Challenged (not really) I needed confirmation that I was on the correct path with my math :) Chuck G. Joe-aa4nn [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Here's something to think about and it is doable and a no-brainer. Phase your two verticals. Make each vertical a 1/4 wave and space them 1/4 wave apart. Tune each one independently for your favorite frequency. Get the ComtekSystems Phased vertical box with associated feed lines and you are in business. With the phased verticals you can selectively switch for end fire in either direction in line with the verticals, plus you can switch select to transmit broadside to the two elements. Amazing results. The EC1 enclosure is the same size as the K1. The KAT100 will not fit in it. What Neal wants (I believe) is the enclosure that the transverters and the KAT100 come in. I have found no information on this. Forgive me if it is available. Greg Derda, wrote: I just finished building K2 #6100 …two obvious configuration for my K2 are: 1. K2/100 with separate KAT/100 2. Whether the KPA100 behaves (i.e., appears) the same to the K2 as if it were internal? The KPA100 does behave exactly the same whether it is mounted inside the K2 or mounted in an external EC2 enclosure. With the KPA100 mounted in an external EC2 Enclosure you will need an additional KIO2 mounted in the EC2 (one KIO2 in the basic K2 and one in the EC2) and the data cable connecting the K2 and the KPA100 in the EC2 2. Is it a simple plug-n-play to either use or not use the EC2 setup? Yes, it is very much just “plug and play”. As long as the data cable is installed the K2 will recognize when the KPA100 is connected. 3. For QPR ops with the EC2 setup, can you run just the KAT100 without having to power the KPA100? For QRP operations with a KAT100 and the KPA100 mounted in the external EC2 enclosure the power supports both the KAT100 and the KPA100. To run QRP just adjust the power on your K2. As long as the K2 power remains below 10 watts the KPA100 does on turn on. You can not isolate power to just power the KAT100 with both mounted in the EC2, simply adjust the power output to QRP level on the K2. With my K2 I have the KAT2 internal tuner and internal battery installed, with the KPA100 and the KAT100 mounted externally in an EC2 enclosure. For Field operations I simply disconnect the data cable, antenna connection, and power cable then walk away with my K2 QRP rig ready to go. You can take a look at my K2 and KPA100/KAT100 setup with my cable connections at: http://k2qrp.com/Radio%20Projects.htm My setup has been working perfectly for over a year now. Re : [Elecraft] Tuning knob Alternative
I tried a couple of alternate tuning knobs on my K2. I tired using the Knob from my Ten Tec Argo V, I think the shaft size was different or poor aesthetics, it was a while ago and I don't remember exactly, I just know that it did not work. Then I tried a FT 100 knob for a while and I needed to add extra felt behind the knob to keep it from being too sensitive. I ordered the knob directly from Vertex Standard USA Customer service. It worked nice, looked pretty, but it just kind of messed with my perfect Elecraft Mojo so I sold it. Finally I went back to my original K2 knob and added the Finger Dimple. The pictures and description on the Elecraft web site do not do justice to this great little inexpensive addition. The Finger Dimple is perfect, if anything it should come as a standard item with every K2. 73 K2CG Chuck Gehring ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Wire Antennas and feedline for the KX1
I enjoy putting together and playing with simple wire antennas for field operations. I have also been fortunate to enjoy moderate success with my efforts. However I am looking to refine my approach in an effort to make my systems more efficient. My approach in the past has been to follow designs and dimensions for established dipole’s and doublets, then check my effort by using an MFJ-259 to verify that they fall within acceptable limits for my tuner and desired frequency range. I am not looking to build an antenna that will give me 1:1.0 SWR but rather try to change the feed-line impedance to produce a better load transfer. Currently I am using a 135’ doublet with 50’ of 450 ohm ladder line, but I am looking at trying an 88’ Doublet and different types of balanced transmission lines to vary the input impedance, by using 300 ohm, 450 ohm ladder line or even trying some home built 650 ohm ladder line. I have read several articles and books on antenna building but have missed anything that addresses this aspect of antenna construction. That is not to say that it hasn’t been discussed only that I have not seen it. The following links and articles have been very helpful: L.B. Cebrik’s W4RNL’s technical articles “10 Frequency Asked Questions about the All-Band Doublet” http://www.cebik.com/wire/abd.html “My Top Five Backyard Multi-band Wire HF Antennas” http://www.cebik.com/fdim/fdim9.pdf “Some (Old) Notes on Home-Brew Parallel Transmission Lines” http://www.cebik.com/trans/par.html “The Minimalist Backpack Antenna System” by Bonnie Crystal KQ6XA http://www.qsl.net/kq6xa/antenna/ I have downloaded and tried the trial version of EZ NEC only to be totally confuses with my effort. I would appreciate some feedback on my thought process, am I running down a rabbit trail that has already been explored as a wasted effort? Is there someone on the reflector that understands owns and understands EZ NEC that could provide me feedback on what the modeling results would be with a 135’ doublet or 88’ doublet with 300 ohm, or 450 ohm or 650 ohm ladder line on 80M, 40M, 30M and 20M at a height of 45’ to 65’. [Elecraft] Limited success with USB to Serial Cable Adapter
I achieved some limited degree of success last night with my USB to Serial adapter cable. Thanks to the excellent recommendation/endorsement from Paul Gates, KD3JF and Don Nesbitt, N4HH, I visited the I.O.Gear web-site and downloaded the USB-Serial Driver for the GUC232A cable. http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=dm Installing the driver was just a little tricky; I had to uninstall the old driver (following instructions from the MS Windows Tech Support web-site). I also downloaded the GIC232A Manual from I.O.Gear. The driver installed and showed up as Prolific USB Serial. Again following the instructions from the KIO2 manual, I conducted the Menu PORT test and Eureka! the radio responded to commands from the Hyper Terminal, perfectly. Unfortunately, I labeled it a limited success because when I attempted to connect my K2 with my “Ham Radio Deluxe” software things did not run smoothly. There appeared to be a huge latency issue between HRD and the K2. The full frequency from my K2 did not always show up on HRD and commands from the HRD to the K2 were delayed about 8-10 seconds. After running HRD straight to a Serial input and experiencing a seamless interface this was disappointing. But alas that is something that I will work on with HRD and I really don’t consider that a major issue, as I know that I will work it out. I have faith in Simon Brown and the HRD forum. For what it may be worth it seemed that changing positions of the USB cable from one USB connection (on the back of the computer) and there by changing my COM Port settings gave me different results. My system did not seem to like COM Port 3 or 4, but by moving to a different USB connection and changing to COM Port 5 and 6 showed very good results. It may be worth a try. The point is that the I.O.Gear GUC232A software worked. For those individuals looking to get a USB to Serial Interface, I found a great deal from Amazon.com for the Cable and Software for $20 shipping included http://www.dealtime.com/xPC-Iogear_G_UC232A 73 Chuck ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Continuing Serial (RS232, DP9) to USB Adapter cable
My K2 USB saga continues. I truly appreciate the feedback and comments from the Elecraft Reflector. My dilemma started when my older full size desktop computer finally died. With my older system I had an imbedded serial port on the mother board. I use only cables that are wired specifically for my K2, (always have always will). The cables work and the KIO2 work, I used them with my old system and confirmed that they still work by hooking things up to my XYL’s computer. I have tired several different Serial (RS 232, DB-9)-USB adapter cables plugged directly into the USB connection from the motherboard, no USB hub or USB PCI cards. Granted the Serial USB adapter cables came with a variety of other devices, hence my original question about drivers or construction. It would appear that the quality of construction varies from cable to cable. I had assumed that the design and system protocol for Serial to USB adapter would be the same; that evidently may not be the case. I am currently using a new Desktop computer running Windows XP. The new desktop system did not come with any Serial ports. I wanted to try and use the existing USB port. I have double and triple checked my Com Port device settings with the windows Device Manager and tried to check connectivity using the K2 PORT menu and the computer Hyper Terminal following the instructions from the KIO2 manual; 4800 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 2 stop bits (and tried 1 stop bit). I have tried changing COM ports and different devices drivers. The closest that I came to success was seeing a tiny blip of un-decipherable data stream on the Hyper terminal window during a K2 PORT test. I have finally ordered a PCI Serial Controller card ($9) from Newegg.com. It was either a $9 serial card or another $29 Serial USB Adapter cable to add to my existing supply of cables. I will probably continue to play with some settings and drivers with my existing array of Serial USB adapter cables simply because I am a confirmed “Tinker’er” 73 K2CG Chuck Gehring ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Buddi stick and KX1
I have an KX1 with the ATU and 30m Band module. I set up my Buddipole with three taps on each coil for each band. Changing bands is as simple as leaning the Buddipole over and changing the shorting wire from one tap to the next and switching bands on the KX1. I love the combination because I can rotate the Buddipole to get a little better signal on some weak stations. I put my KX1 and Buddipole in my Rucksack and use it on the AT. It makes my ruck a little heavier than I would like, but for short treks 4-6 miles I can live with it. [Elecraft] Touch up Paint Recommendations
Whoops, I am working on making an External Speaker for my K2 with an EC2 Enclosure. Metalwork is not my strong point. Any way I am probably going to have to sand and repaint the entire front panel where I tried to cut out the opening for the speakers. Can any one recommend a type and color of spray paint the matches the color and shade of Elecraft Gray? 73 KI4DGH Chuck G. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 battery
I for one would at least like to hear if someone see any remote problem with this type of mod? I got only one reaction, so I guess many are wondering what is a good way! I decided to go for the experimental way and did the following: - Measure the supply voltage, we call that U1; - Measure the battery voltage in charged situation, we call that U2; - Take U1-U2 and devide that over the charging current you want to use. In case of my 2400 mA/h cells I decided for a conservative 200 mA; - The result is the resistor value, in my case about 33 Ohm; - Take the square of U1-U2 and devide over R and you have the power, in my case between one and 2W. I had a 33 Ohm resistor of 5W in stock which was only 0,3 inch, so it fits very nicely. I have mounted it on the component side of the pcb, otherwise it gets in the way of the battery! The result is very positive, it charges nicely. I have mounted a timer in line with the charging supply, an old Nokia 12V GSM supply, to avoid overcharging as I read that NiMh cells dont like that. Have fun! Oh and by the way; modifying is at your own risk and will probably violate the warranty. Or perhaps Wayne and Eric find it such a good idea that they will allow it ;) 73, Dick PA2DW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 KAT 100 choices
Decisions Decisions. I am getting ready to order the External KAT 100 ATU for my K2/100. The desired end state may or may not be a K2 with the KPA100 and KAT100 in a seperate enclosure. However for right now I just want to get the KAT 100-2. So are there any advantages dis-advantages to ordering the KAT 100-1 and the KAT 100PNL or should I order the KAT 100-2 and an EC2 Blank Project. I the difference in cost is only $4, so that is not even a consideration. 73 KI4DGH Chuck G. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 battery
Does anyone of you have experience charging Ni-Mh cells in the KX1? I have 2400 mA/h cells installed and if I am right, a 33 Ohm resistor accross D3, would charge these cells in app. 10 hours. I saw Paul W0RW's post awhile ago about his Ni-CAd battery mod. I don't know or understand very much about the actual theory behind rechargable batteries. It is my understanding that Ni-Mh maintain a higher voltage for a longer period without the memory of Ni-CAD. It would seem that having Ni-Mh would be a more practical option for power as compared to the standard Ni-CAD option. 73, KI4DGH Chuck G. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Final comments on # 4476 K2 Build
I have had K2 4467 completed now for a couple of weeks. I don?t want to take up too much Band Width, but I did want to make some final comments for the sake of potential builders. Before I got my K2 I started to get concerned reading the Elecraft Reflector and reading only problems from several builders. Overall the build went together very well. I ran into some problems that were mostly my inability to properly understand the written instructions in the manual. Additional guidance from Gary Surrency and the fine folks on the reflector got me back on track. During my Final Alignment of the K2, I had problems calibrating the 4 MHz Master Oscillator. I failed to understand that the procedure could and should be conducted several times to fine tune the calibration. The instructions were great and I only had to conduct the procedure about 4 times to get a near perfect match. During the build I also noticed a QSK thumb in the Speaker and Headset. I didn?t do anything to try and fix it and figured that I would get use to it. Well now a couple of weeks later and I can?t detect any QSK thump at all. I?ll write that up to Elecraft Mojo. During the KPA100 build I had a little concern when the resistance measurements for the Q1 and Q2 did not match the values posted in the manual. It turns out that the Finals are photo-sensitive and everything was fine when the measurements were taken without a bright light overhead. I have since added the following modules, K160RX, KSB2, KNB2, KDSP2, KPA100, and the K6XX SMD CW Tuning indicator courtesy of N0SS. Everything is running great. This is only the second kit I have built, my KX1 was the first. This was truly a great experience. [Elecraft] Mystified with KPA 100 4 MHz audible tone
The KPA 100 manual points out during the receiver test The signal from the KPA100's 4-MHz crystal oscillator (X2) may be audible at the high end of the 80-meter band. If this is the case, you can move it to a point just above 4 MHz using trimmer C27. The signal from the 4-MHz oscillator on the K2 Control board may be much stronger. Rotate C27 slightly to identify the KPA100 signal. Well I verified that I can in fact hear the two identical and separate tones by adjusting the trimmer C27 in the KPA 100. I am just not sure what the intent of the adjustment is other than to verify the two sources for the audio tone on 80 meters. What am I doing when I adjust C27 to move to tone above the 4 MHz region? 73 KI4DGH Chuck G. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 IF Amp Alignment and AGC Threshold
I have a couple of questions about readings I have collected during my present build process. First: The procedure outlined for setting the AGC Threshold on page 47 recommends setting the voltage from U2 pin 5 to 3.8 volts by adjusting R-1. In the troubleshooting section Appendix E Page 6, the procedure recommends setting the voltage to 3.9 volts. As I understand it this is a initial adjustment that I will fine tune later and that I am just adjusting for a peak voltage. However the maximum I can adjust my U2 Pin 5 voltage is 3.78. Comments? Second: The IF Amplifier Alignment, outlines a procedure to tune the VFO to 7.000 MHz then with the L34 slug turned down 1 1/2 turns from the top of the can, adjust the L34 for signal peak. I hear a tone at 6,998 MHz and the audible tone is pretty solid for a full one and half turns in either direction on the L34. I hooked up a DMM to the headphone output and the voltage appears to peak at the top of the L34 can. Comments? Third: I remember seeing a posting that discussed a rather elaborate procedure to Calibrate the K2 S-meter using the Elecraft XG1. Or was I dreaming? Can someone point me in the right direction to speed up my search. 73, KI4DGH Chuck G. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
