[Elecraft] KAT fw 1.58 auto or manual use ? KAT3 in bypass or in auto ?
Hello today I updated all my K Line to production fw but I'm getting crazy with my KAT500. I was used to keep it in AUTO and as soon as I QSY in case of need KAT performed a new tune (my vertical antenna under rain shows SWR to 2-,2,4) and I forgot tuning. Now after 1.58 fw installation if I leave KAT in AUTO any time I do a qsy KAT retunes, if I put it into MAN (as written in Wayne document) it properly recalls last tune without retuning. So, for future shall I have to use my KAT500 in MAN (and in case of huge rain I have to retune) or there's a problem with my KAT500 ? With previous fw I had no problem and I wonder if I'd better to rollback. Another question I need a clarification possibly : on my k3 KAT3 is set to KAT500Y but I have KAT3 in bypass since I bought KAT500. Question : should I keep KAT3 in Bypass or it's better to put it in Auto ? Many thanks in advance for help Best 73 Giorgio IK1BXN -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KAT-fw-1-58-auto-or-manual-use-KAT3-in-bypass-or-in-auto-tp7584672.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Shorter DB15/DB15 cable from KAT to KPA
Hello I have my KPA500 placed over the KAT500 (probably like many other users) and I'm using the Elecraft DB15/DB15 original cable (the first model about 1 cm diameter, I heard the new cable model has less diameter and is more flexible but the length is the same). It happens I have a mess behind KPA caused by the unused cable length. I ask if it is available or from Elecraft (better) or from any other dealer a shorter cable (I think 1 ft length) I could use to safely connect KAT with KPA. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500
Hi ! I've a similar issue but in my case it comes from the cabling I feel. My KAT is directly connected to antenna incoming bur k3 has extra 2,5 meters of RG 58 (1 meter patch from KAT to switch plus 1,5 meters patch from the switch to k3). In my situation and only in some bands I have differents SWR reading at KAT and k3. 73 - Giorgio IK1BXN -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KAT500-tp7579220p7579231.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] k3-kat500-pr6-DigiKeyer via 2 "Y" cable in "cascade" should be OK ?
Hello you all ! Currently I have my k3 connected via an "Y" DB15 cable to KAT500 and cable and PR6. Now I'm purchasing a MicroHam DigiKeyer that needs to be connected to k3 DB15 connector too and uses pins 1-4-5 for FSK and PTT. At the moment I have no place to plug DigiKeyer DB15 connector to. I wonder if it will be correct to purchase an additional "Y" DB15 and connect it in "cascade" to the "Y" I already have. The scenario it should be : 1st "Y" plugged to k3 and having one end to KAT500 and the 2nd end to feed the 2nd "Y". 2nd "Y" will feed PR6 at the 1st end and MicroHam DigiKeyer at the 2nd end. Should it be correct ? Should it create any problem or damage ? Re: [Elecraft] P3/SVGA used as "modem" for DxLab WWW or other apps
Thanks Joe and Don for answer. No Don, I think to a terminal data exchange between p3 and an external application that can manage/integrate current date. The encode/decode job is inside k3 and inputs/result are available on the serial port. Something like a modem. Into other words the pc running the app will find on serial comm decoded text coming from the qso, the same going to transmission app will send data to k3 that will encode and will transmit. It's what we did years ago by using external device such KAM. The app was basically a terminal sw capable to help you by managing memories (we better call them now macros) and so on. If I understood correctly with P3/Svga the only way I have to interact (during a qso so) is to see what's incoming and answer via the keyboard. This way there is no additional function such as : inserting qso into the log (retrieving callsign, freq, mode, time and so on), query QRZ for data and more. As Joe clarified it would have been not easy to get. Thanks you for kind attention and explanationbut it's not a new here :-) !!! 73 Giorgio -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-SVGA-used-as-modem-for-DxLab-WWW-or-other-apps-tp7570082p7570090.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] P3/SVGA used as "modem" for DxLab WWW or other apps
Hi ! I'm having crazy (probably that) idea : should it be possible to use P3/Svga in DxLab WWW as if it was an external device such as KAM or PK232 or whatever similar ? I'd like to leave k3 decoding and encoding PSK31 or RTTY FSK and having and external software/suite it would mean IMHO to be able to manage the log, controlling the rig via CAT (maybe) and more. [Elecraft] KAT 500 my considerations and why not suggestion for the team
I like very much KAT, it's fast shape and reliable for what I saw right nowbut as I came from a Drake MN 2700 I strongly feel the fault of something telling me at a glance if and how much RF power I'm really putting RF into the antenna. Previously I had a wattmeter now I've to trust the online rig instrument (online one because I use KAT with k3 or Orion or Drake via an antenna switch). I'm thinking to buy an additional wattmeter (such as LP 100A for example) but meantime I wonder : as the KAT knows itself direct and reflected power and as the utility can printout their values, should it be possible to have these values displayed somewhere else without having an application running and a USB port occupied ? For example : - printed out in a dedicated device with a few line display (think to Arduino) that could be a sort of remote for KAT (including command buttons why not). This should be interesting for me as I located my KAT in a not so confortable position in my shack. - or better, printed out on P3 screen during TX time (time in which P3 screen does nothing and stays freezed on the last image it had) Thanks a lot for reading ! 73 de Giorgio -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KAT-500-my-considerations-and-why-not-suggestion-for-the-team-tp7566685.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Antenna matrix switch a device I'd like to own...by Elecraft of course
Hello you all! As I have a couple of HF antennas and 5 rigs in the shack I feel the need to switch antennas among radios. At the moment I switch only the main antenna by using an LDG DTS-6 antenna switch "reverse connected", but I would prefer to have an Elecraft device to manage this functionality. My dream it should be to have an antenna switch in a box (with same KAT500 dimensions and outline) capable to manage 2-3 antennas into 5-6 rigs. Of course a device like this would warranty appropriate power dimensioning, remote control, logic interlocks (maybe for Elecraft rigs also avoiding tx if no antenna is connected to the rig) and why not shorting to ground all ports at power off. [Elecraft] K3 and Fldigi on a Mac
Hi guys. Even if I like very much HRD I decided to stop with it due to stressing faults (I really hate) in serial communication that suddenly and frequently cause AGC going off. I'm a Mac user and right now I virtualized at it an XP Pro just and only to run HRD. I'm planning to move to a 100% OSx native application for digi modes. I'm thinking to Fldigi or MacLoggerDx/cocoa ... or anything else, any suggestion it will be appreciated. I use Signalink Usb and I already saw it works from Mac side (Fldigi decodes traces perfectly) I'm not OSx skilled so I'd need some help/suggestions from Mac users relevant to Usb/rs232 adapter under OSx (I use Keyspan USA19H-1) because right now I have installed driver only into the virtualized XP machine. Now I have to install (I think) something (I'm not sure "driver" it should be the appropriate word) under Mac, to let Fldigi (or whatever else app for digi) CAT running. My questions are: 1) are there any special attention to pay during Usb/232 "driver" installation in OSx ? 2) having the adapter configured under OSx and XP virtualized, will the adapter work in both machines Mac and XP (I'd like for a time to have the possibility to use HRD or Fldigi, not simultaneously of course, just to train myself) ? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Attenuator and soundcard digital modes
Even if my name is not Don...HI I'm posting the way I use to work psk31. normally I keep 2700 Hz bandwith in order to have the waterfall at a glance. Then if ther's a track that I want insulate from the rest of the world (for example because it's a weak trace or there's a very close strong track) I move the filter center to the frequency of the track I want to follow (inside the 50 Hz granularity of course) and then I reduce the filter bandwidth to 100-150 Hz (the k3 automatically switches to my 400 Hz 8 pole filter).Sometimes at that point I switch on the Pre. As I'm used to keep Ham Radio Deluxe opened for k3 CAT even when I'm in cw, I wonder if anybody added to HRD screen the possibility to switch on/off the APF (I mean by creating a new button or in any other way). Re: [Elecraft] Two issues with data transmission
Just to add a suggestion more to what Rick told you that's perfect, maybe it's not your case but did you place Signalink internal jumpers in the proper position respect the cabling you are using to k3 ? I told this because when I moved from IC 756 to k3 I risked to forget correcting the jumpers from 756 map to k3.73 de Giorgio -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Two-issues-with-data-transmission-tp6300401p6301296.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] OT Hearing HRD Communicate w/K3
In the past (in other situation and not k3 vs HRD) using shielded cable for serial connection and connecting its shield to signal ground ONLY at one edge (leaving shield disconnected at the other edge) helped me to fix noise capture. Maybe this may help also in this case. 73 to everybody -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/OT-Hearing-HRD-Communicate-w-K3-tp6186303p6187080.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Suggestions/Considerations speaking of digimodes functionality
Sorry I forgot explaining what I think suggesting Ethernet interface :-) 1) As any recent network device (switch, router, access point and so on) I think it would be useful and maybe original having inside the rig a web engine. Having this feature you could by simply opening a web page via browser interact with rig for touching menu setting, update firmware (why not), check log of critical data, events it's only a matter of developer fantasy I thinkremember that inside k3 there is a big computer resource ready for usedespite to the "old fashion" rig :-) . 2) it should be possible to think to a sort of "remote desktop" for CAT and else (limit it's only fantasy) or rig remote use (it's not my case but I see somebody uses this way). For what I saw and feel using k3 it's a sort of "open source radio", because team from Elecraft is so flexible and available that I have the feeling I can touch it by myself(parallel with Linux). Other rigs are a black box "as is" and until the rig is "young" efforts are oriented to fix bugs...later ... sorry it's an old rig , no longer under maintenance or better attention.(parallel with other operating systems). One more time 73 to all ! Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Suggestions/Considerations speaking of digimodes functionality
Hi Joe, maybe translating from italian into english I did not explained in clear way what I mean, I'll try to clarify. Usb : I'm not suggesting to integrate a conventional 232/Usb converter inside k3 (even if it would be possible to do by cabling all the firmware necessary to have everything onboard without OS driver need) but re-engineer the internal I/O in order to make available a standard Usb port. For what I know, Usb is totally non related to any COM port. If you plug into your pc an external Usb device (webcam, hard disk, audio card etc) can you see any relation to a COM port ? I think you can't see. The pc will see some Usb device and will use it according to its Usb interfacing subsystem. Of course it's a cost I know, but even if rs232 will live for many years to come (because it's an industrial reliable standard), at home we have always Usb and seldom rs232 port. In addition (my opinion of course) having Usb interface should be useful to give to k3 the look of a modern rig (even if we know it's a modern rig).not an old fashion rig as extremely often I read surfing the internetcomments coming from people that evaluate a rig looking if it has a TV set inside, lot of displays many leds and so on. I think it should pay. Better would be having also an Ethernet interface ! Signalink : I spoke of that because I have it, but it's a much more general matter, anyway Signalink it's not only an additional Vox, it's a complete (and optimized for our HAM purposes) sound card that interfaces with pc via Usb. In addition it takes care of PTT by using a Vox circuit. At Signalink there are regulation for IN and OUT level and PTT delay. Using this interface the pc internal audio card is completely out of game, so you can play a DVD, listen system sound and so on when you are in PSK. Last, as Signalink provide a total galvanic separation and in addition it converts AF levels into digital data and releases them to pc via Usb...this let you much more free from any possible RF interference. Thans for reading, 73 de Giorgio -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Suggestions-Considerations-speaking-of-digimodes-functionality-tp5982524p5986254.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Observations Digital Modes and SSB
I share what Julian wrote 100% . My question was only oriented to take care of my rig . k3 makes the difference, not only in rx ! I have a vertical multiband antenna that works fine but it's a vertical, however k3 let me to receive and decode even weak signals. In tx k3 has a clean and perfect modulation and keeping ALC settings as suggested I receive always perfect comments to my waterfall track. In the past, using another rig, comments were different. With the goal to keep an eye to modulation quality/clean, in a previous post I suggested to add to p3 (sleeping at tx time HI) the possibility to show during tx time info about wave form or whatever else useful. This, in my opinion, would help to optimize the rig settings and have the maximum without producing rubbish into the air not only when in PSK, isn't it ? 73 to everybody ! [Elecraft] [K3] Suggestions/Considerations speaking of digimodes functionality
Hi you all! I'm using my k3 in digimodes connected to a Mac Mini with XP Pro virtualized in order to execute Ham Radio Deluxe. As this pc has no rs232 interface I'm using,of course, adapter (Keyspan in my case because I heard it's one of the few OSx certified). For AF and PTT I have a Signalink Usb. I have a second 232/usb adapter just to interface IC 2820 for DSTAR. Everything works perfectly except that often booting the VM XP, COM port number assignment changes and I have to touch manually COM port number to get my radios working, even if I set 232/usb adapters to work in "geographic" mode, so with a "static" com port nr assignment. This stated (but I feel it's relevant to many operating system not only VM), I wonder a couple of things : 1) are thinking to integrate inside k3 a native Usb port? It would mean that it would be no longer required to install on the pc a driver for 232/usb adapter, avoiding this way COM port number changing at boot. 2) are you thinking to integrate inside k3 an interface similar to Signalink ? This would fix forever problems that I had (but I read other collegues are having) such as LINE input/output signal level settings and PTT Thanks for patience and attention ! 73 de Giorgio IK1BXN -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Suggestions-Considerations-speaking-of-digimodes-functionality-tp5982524p5982524.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3 in TX consideration/suggestions ... maybe stupid
Ciao John, I quote 100% what you wrote ! My dream should be to use the fantastic P3 also at tx time having there all info it's useful to have in order to be sure that tx is optimized. I intend P3 as a powerful measurement instrument not only a panoramic useful device .Right now you have to buy external 3rd part device such as LP-100a or LP-500 to get this kind of info/values. Of course it will take a time and a cost to develop this features, that's not up to me to decide if proceed of course. I proposed to start with the info all already available at K3 (I think) such as RF power, SWR and ALC just to start giving to P3 a role also in TX. 73 Giorgio -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-in-TX-consideration-suggestions-maybe-stupid-tp5925385p5928935.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 filter centering different behaviour from band toband
Hi Dave, thanks for quick response. No, I change band via Cat command by using Ham Radio Deluxe, the suite I use for digi modes. Now tried to change band by using the k3 front button but it's the same:moving Shift knob I can't choose less than 1100 Hz in 15m and 10m. It's just from the HRD waterfall that I noticed the difference, in 20m I have a larger region to transmit (from 400 Hz to 2700 Hz or wider), in 15m and 10m I have power out only in the right half of the waterfall screen (from 1100 Hz to 2800 Hz).For that I tought I touched some Dsl setting in wrong way. It happend to me in the past something similar with a TS-480 but then I found out the correct setting to have quite all waterfall available for transmission (as it is on 20m with my k3).Tnx and 73 Giorgio -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-filter-centering-different-behaviour-from-band-to-band-tp5596637p5596886.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 filter centering different behaviour from band to band
Hi you all! I own a k3 since 3 days so probably what I'm writing should be a stupid question, sorry for this. It happens that in 20m band I can center (or better shift) filter from 400 Hz to 4000 Hz, in 15m and in 10m I can only between 1100 Hz to 4000 Hz. I'm sure I did some mistakes during these days playing because I think I'd expect same behaviour in any band isn't it ? but I can't find a way to properly correct my mistake and rollback. Many thanks in advance for patience to anyone will answer and help me or simply will read this message.73 de Giorgio -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-filter-centering-different-behaviour-from-band-to-band-tp5596637p5596637.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
