[Elecraft] AX1 works great
What brought up this discussion was a comment about needing to make the AX1 resonant. It is a 4' antenna, and by itself, won't be resonant on 15-40. It was not intended to be a resonant antenna. The internal "tuners" - impedance matching devices - of the KX2, KX3 and KH1 allow max energy to be input into the antenna - 5-12 watts. Using the system as factory delivered, I have had great success with the AX1 and the KH1 whip. The internal "tuner" matches the antenna, allows full radio power out and receive energy in. I connect the antenna directly to the radios, push the tune button, get the 1.1:1 match almost always and make contacts. The QSOs are sufficient to activate parks, which has been my goal. I am able to accomplish my goal without putting the AX1 or whip on a tripod, using multiple radials/counterpoises, or using coax. I can setup the radio in less than 5 minutes, spot myself and usually complete the activation in less than 30 minutes (usually, if the sun is cooperatin g), and teardown in about 2 minutes. I use an external battery. Of course the AX1 is not going to be resonant as presented from the factory, when measured with an analyzer. It is a 4' collapsible whip, with one 13' or 31' counterpoise. Use the internal tuner, attach the antenna to the radio, and have fun. It is about having fun. One of the local hams has fun using random metal objects as antennas. He tuned his antenna, a toaster oven, sliding the tray in and out. He loaded a floor lamp, a screen door, a metal fence - and made QSOs with all of them. Someone mentioned Kurt N. Sterba (and Lil Paddle). They debunked many basic philosophies held for years by hams - tribal knowledge. Ham radio is about having fun. Just have fun. The KX-2/3, KH-1and the AX1/2 help to make ham radio fun. 72/73 John Kitchens, NS6X 805.216.2569 n...@arrl.org PO Box 178 Somis, CA 93066 ARRL Santa Barbara Section Manager __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] AX1 works great
Performance for me has nothing to do with SWR, but am I making QSOs. I do. With the AX1 attached directly to the radio, KX2 and KX3, using the internal matching unit ("tuner", which has little to do with tuning the antenna), I have made 68 activations, 10-40 meters cw. From California, I have worked into China and asiatic Russia on 17 meters. The silly thing works, and works well. Propagation must be in your favor. It has not worked every day. I have had to resort to digital modes occasionally to complete an activation (add another 32 activations). It was my main radio system, along with a KH1 on my two recent trips, one a three month cross country pota trip. The SWr was 1:1, usually, with the internal tuner. I always used the AX1 attached directly to the radio with a 3D printed antenna support. I have used other radios and antennas, usually when stopped for more than a few hours, but the AX1 and kx2 have allowed for me to make a quick stop, usually less than one-hour total, to activate parks. Again, direct connection to the radio, 40-15, modified AX2 for 10, internal tuner, one radial as supplied by elecraft. Don't overthink it. SWR does not equate to resonance. Remember tube radios-we had the SWr/tuner/matching device built into the radio, usually as a pi network. Re: [Elecraft] Lightning
Some lightning musings My K3s network interface board took a surge on the USB part of the board a few years ago and toasted a diode and maybe a transistor (I forgot), RS232 was unaffected. Elecraft replaced the board and returned the old one. One of my to-do list items is to replace those components. My primary radio is now a TS-890 but the K3s is on duty for JS8Call 7x24 (when no storms are forecast.) Still salivating over a K4 BTW. As far as lightning, one of my most unusual personal experiences was when we had a sailboat (40' ketch with the mainmast 50' off the water) at a typical Florida marina. Next to us was about a 35 or 40 foot powerboat and next to him was another sailboat. So one would expect the powerboat is protected by virtue of the two tall lightning 'rods' on either side of him. Uh, no. We had a very close lightning strike, none of our electronics were damaged and the other sailboat was also unaffected. The powerboat's electronics were toast, all of them. He couldn't believe it nor could we. We suspect he took an electrical surge via the shore power cord but that's just a wild guess. We heard of sailboat that took a strike and the next morning when they started the engine they discovered the transmission was internally fused together . Re: [Elecraft] User's Dilemma
Early in my career at SW Bell (then management with AT&T Info Systems) I was a Teletype tech. We worked on Model 28, 33, 35, 40, 3274 bisync terminals, printers, tape punch, readers and tape printers. Classes on each model were five days a week, eight hours a day for three weeks. It took me at least a year to become proficient on most models. After two years I could pull a mainshaft on a Model 28/35 to replace clutch parts and have it back in service in 20 minutes. At that point as a TTY tech I was called on and traveled to assist others in a difficult repairs. My standard to become up to speed (maybe 90%) is about six months for the many jobs I had at AT&T. Sidebar: The model 33s were the 'economy' models. Adjustments were made by bending various parts, arms, levers, etc. From a technician point of view they were junk. There is methods to punch through NATs, and I hope one have chosen to use an approach that does this. One is to operate over a VPN that have these abilities. Another is to use a standard tunnel usinging say TLS that also include the punch-through capabilities. Also, IPv6 is starting to replace the IPv4 NAT/CG-NAT hell. It's been a long coming for sure, but there is plenty of signs it is happening. While initial release may be IPv4 limited, IPv6 should be high up on the list of thigns to fix if it is not already handled. This should not be relevant only for the K4, but any device. Re: [Elecraft] HI CUR warning on K3
I am not very familiar with a Carolina Windom but I believe it is just a horizonal wire fed off center. These types of antennas can have significant common mode current on the feedline. Perhaps there is more current on 40m than on 80m so it works on 80m. A resonant dipole with a choke may solve this HI CUR issue. John KK9a Pete Smith N4ZR wrote: I send a few characters of CW into my Carolina Windom on 40M and after a delay (1-5 seconds after I stop sending) the K3 flashes a HI CUR warning, and the audio gain is reduced significantly. Touch the AF gain control and it instantly returns the gain to normal, but frequently the HI CURR warning returns over and over, without any additional transmissions. This sequence does not happen, even with 1500 watts, into my dummy load, nor does it happen on the same antenna on 80M, or on 20 meters on my tribander. I've read the HI CUR warning discussion on page 65 of the manual, but it doesn't seem relevant, because I don't have external speakers. The fact that it only happens when feeding an actual antenna on one band suggests RFI, but the fact that the HI CUR warning and gain reduction recur again and again long after any RF has me puzzled. [Elecraft] K2 VFO dial calibration and CAL PLL step…
Hi All, I’m re-doing the dial calibration of my K2 #6998 which I built well over 10 years ago. I’m re-reading W3FPR’s helpful instructions but it’s been a long time since I did the initial calibration and I have a question. After completing the C22 adjustment step, does CAL PLL need to be performed on each and every band? Or is it run only on the band on which C22 was adjusted? I can’t find any clear statement about this in Don’s notes, but maybe I’ve overlooked it? My thought is that CAL PLL would need to be run on every band before moving on to the CAL FIL procedure in order that the lookup tables are written for each band? [Elecraft] TS-890 vs K4D performance?
Hi all, Long time fan of Elecraft, I have a K3s and a KPA1500, both are currently in service. My primary HF radio is now a TS-890, I bought it about four or so years ago after giving up waiting on the K4's to be off the shelf ready to purchase. So on to my questions about the two rigs. For those who have fairly recent experience running both the TS-890/K4's I would greatly appreciate anyone's thoughts and comments about the two rigs. I really like the 890 after I finally figured out how to run it (hi hi). I like the visual representation of adjusting the high and low bandpass filters on the waterfall. One feature of the 890 I don't like is the notch filter isn't automatic unlike my K3s. I know there's a lot of complaints about relatively poor DSP noise reduction on the 890 and I do agree it's not in the same class as my K3s but nonetheless it's still quite effective. Receive sensitivity on my 890 is outstanding, I'll have to give it a subjective 5 stars and my K3s 4 stars. One huge bonus of Elecraft is factory service which I've had to use a couple of times with my K3s. I give it 5 stars :-) Any helpful comments are greatly appreciated and please be brutally honest. 73 de John WB5THT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Digital mode power handling for KAT3
I agree that the KAT3(a) can run 100 watts for quite a while. I have run 100 watts in RTTY contests with both of my K3S(s) without issue. I have never used FT8, I am sure that my RTTY transmissions are shorter than a 13 second FT8 transmission however the non-transmit time in-between RTTY transmissions can be very short when CQing at times. I have no personal experience with the KAT3's power capability, I am sure that it depends on what it is matching. I have all OWA Yagis so I have no need for a tuner. John KK9A David Gilbert AB7E wrote: I am reasonably certain that the KAT3 can handle 100 watts for a lengthy period to time (enough for normal FT8 purposes) if the SWR it is trying to match is low enough. But the original query didn't say how high an SWR he was trying to match. The KAT3 is certainly capable of matching some pretty high SWRs (well over 10:1), but the question is how long can it push 100 watts into an SWR that it could otherwise normally handle at lower SWR. Another factor is the phase of the impedance the KAT3 is trying to match. A high SWR could present either a capacitive load or an inductive load to the KAT3. In one case it could result in high currents within the KAT3 ... in another it could mean high internal voltages. So the real question is ... can the KAT3 survive for X amount of time when pushing 100 watts into a high SWR at most any phase? I can pretty much guarantee that nobody knows the answer to that question. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the KAT3 could handle 100 watts into a high SWR for periods of time that were comfortable for FT8 if the phase of the load impedance resulted in higher currents. I'm not so confident about that if the phase gave high voltages. Heating takes a bit of time to be destructive ... voltage breakdowns and arc overs happen very quickly. 73, Dave AB7E __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Headset Hubbub

[Elecraft] K-Pod button problems
During the weekend's WW RTTY contest I used a K3S and a K-Pod. The K-Pod worked great for RIT control. I tried to use it to occasionally switch my RX antenna in and out but then I was quickly reminded why I do not use this function and instead use the RX ANT button on the radio. I have the F4 button programed so a quick press toggles the RX antenna and a long press switches the radio to 40m. What happens on random occasions is tapping the F4 button will switch the radio to 160m instead of toggling the RX antenna input. It is really annoying to be running stations on 40m and then the radio just jumps to another band. The QSO gets messed up and there is a risk of losing the run frequency. Incidentally a long press of F8 is programmed to switch the radio to 160 and that was definitely not accidently touched. I am unsure of the firmware version. Is this a known problem? Is here a cure? Re: [Elecraft] OT: The day I found out I was going to be an engineer
I owe my interest to an unknown person, likely a ham. When I was around 11 I found an Allied Radio and a Lafayette Radio catalog in an abandoned homesteaders cabin on the family ranch that some hunters had left behind after using it for shelter during the Montana deer hunting season. Old catalogs often served as TP in such circumstances. Until then I had no idea shortwave radio existed and being a little remote, we had just gotten REA. In went bingo cards for current catalogs. Not much later I’d taught myself to solder and built a Knightkit Star Roamer. Even joined the ARRL as an associate. But no one to work with me on the code; the one local ham I could find refused. Then as a GE freshman, the EE demo was really boring (the microchip revolution hadn’t hit the curriculum yet) so ME it was but engineering never the less. A listing of the P-Box kits can be found here: http://my.core.com/~sparktron/pbox.html My Father was a Fireman, so there was no way he would trust me with a soldering iron at such a young age. Instead, he ended up building the kit himself while I watched with great interest. He wound several coils so the receiver could receive several ham bands as he was trying to spark an interest in Amateur Radio, but I don't ever recall hearing any hams with the receiver, just the typical short-wave broadcasts of the time. Several years later, he ended up taking the receiver away from me because the radiated broadband noise interfered with his Swan 500CX. :-) It didn't matter much to me anyway as I never heard much with it. But it was every educational in the sense that the frequency range of the receiver was dictated by the size of the coil wound by the builder. Eventually he gave me his old Hammarlund HQ-140-X, so I hardly ever missed that old Radio Shack regen. Interestingly enough, there's a modernized version of the receiver that employs silicon transistors (2N3904 and 2N3906s) instead of the original germanium jobs. Details can be found here: http://www.netzener.net/images/swradio/swradio.pdf And that old Hammarlund lives on to this day after I "solid-stated it" not long after becoming a ham 40 years ago. 73 de John, KD2BD __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] A Good Headset For A K3
I've tried a lot of headsets and like the Bose Quiet Comfort, noise cancelling headset the best. They are fairly light, and the ear pieces are slanted in the outer shell, so the don't touch my earlobes. The noise cancelling takes care of the KPA1500 fan noise. I did NOT like the Bose 700 headset. I'm currently using the QC35 Gaming headset with the microphone. The microphone seems adequate for the little SSB I do. Not sure if these are currently available - maybe check eBay. I've tried several other brands of noise cancelling earphones (including Sony) and found most have serious TX noise on 10 and 15m. BTW, Bluetooth has a delay problem, so completely unusable on CW. My CM500 earphones touched my earlobes, and did NOT provide a good seal around the ear. Quality was questionable. Same with the similar ones by Koss. I think the Radio Sport headphones are too heavy and the spring force was too great. I never got them to relax. It is a VERY broad RF signal centered at about 1 MHz. There’s no such thing as a wire at RF, they are all transmission lines. Everything has both inductance and capacitance. These inductances will affect the way grounding lines work. Conductors at RF exhibit what is called the surface effect, where the current is limited to the surface of the conductor. This is why 50cm (2 inch) wide copper leads, with their large surface area, are recommended. (Note that the surface effect is also important for AC power distribution systems at 50 or 60 Hz.) Proper bonding in the station can make all the equipment “float” at the same voltage above the local soil. Re: [Elecraft] [OT] A dumb question about lightning
I would recommend that you follow proper lightning bonding/grounding techniques, these are the only methods that work. My tower has taken a number of lighting strikes. You cannot prevent a lightning strike. Simply disconnecting your feedling will not prevent damage inside your house as the voltage from a strike will be induced into your home's electrical wires. John KK9A Al Lorona W6LX wrote: Please don't laugh at me; I'm a transplant from a region of the country with essentially no lightning to a region where you have to worry about it quite a bit. We had a doozy of a storm last night, with lots of lightning overhead. I felt like a sitting duck, even though I had grounded both sides of the balanced feedline of the antenna, switched the antenna switch to the middle (grounded) position, and even disconnected the coax leading to the K3's rear-panel antenna port. Whenever lightning happens, I always wonder if it really is in fact better to ground everything. Because, doesn't that essentially make a lightning rod of the antenna? If I simply disconnected the antenna and left it floating, wouldn't it be less likely to attract a lightning bolt? I'm of the belief that it's better to try to avoid a direct hit than to attract one and trust your grounding system to do its thing. I'm of the belief that no grounding system is perfectly effective. [Elecraft] K3: FT4 & RTTY Output Power
When I change modes from FT4 (Data A) to RTTY (AFSK A), I am only able to get around 0.2w output in RTTY. I have to recycle the K3 power, to get full power (100w) in RTTY. Any idea what is causing this, and if there is a fix other than a K3 power recycle? Both modes use the same audio settings, and are keyed via VOX. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and KPA1500 compatibility
Your questions regarding if you can use a KPA100 and KPA1500 together has been recently asked on this list and the answer was YES. I suspect, as K9YC noted, that the real issue is with your antenna. You did not specify exactly what you have tried. A 1/4 vertical with a decent counterpoise will work very well but I suspect that the vertical you tried was something else. A simple center fed 1/2 WL dipole with the center as high as possible should also get you into the net with your 100 watts amp, no tuner needed. Reception is adequate with most 5/8 or 5/9 and verify against the call- in list. A lot of people seem to get by with a KPA 500 but reception is not as solid as those running the legal limit. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 opinions
N4ZR posted a similar question on August 12, 2022 and few people publicly responded. I am sure some people will privately email you with their experiences. It seems like some people have great luck with the KPA1500 and others keep blowing LDMOS finals. It would be nice to pinpoint the cause for blown finals, power level, mode, antenna etc. Reducing power reduces the efficiency so much that doing so does not help reduce the final's heating. I also follow the SPE Expert list and blown finals is a common topic there. LDMOS finals are nowhere near as forgiving as ceramic tubes! I have not heard of any issues with the KPA500 finals, even from people that have had blown their KPA1500 so it may be more robust. However, I'm also aware that over the years, some of the gear has had an issue or two, which generally have been taken care of by the good folks in Watsonville. So, for the KPA1500 users out there, do you have any serious issues to report for the KPA1500? I have "heard" that they're not as robust as the KPA500 and that occasionally there have been failures with the PA devices. Is this true? I was one of the people that saw the KPA1600 run all day every day at Dayton years ago, and have dreamed of that amp ever since. [Elecraft] KXFL3 - How to Use It
Ok every field day, I complain about loud signals stomping on me. Everyone says “then get a roofing filter,” so I bought, installed, and configured the KXFL-3 in my KX3 recently. And I have NO idea how to use it. The Cady book explains what it does and how to configure it but don’t really cover when and how to engage it. The Elecraft install instructions do as well. I’m led to believe that it kicks in automatically, could that actually be the case or am I missing something? TL;DR: can anyone point me to interwebz or printed content on how to use the KXFL3 roofing filter, in time for WFD this weekend? Thanks again, John O. Big thank you to Hank K4HYJ who mentioned Data A is a little different from SB when it comes to the XMIT function. Re: [Elecraft] Muting the K2
Ray, For what it's worth, I've been running a homebrew solid-state QSK CW transmitter for the past 4 years. My T/R relay is an AXICOM V23105A5303A201. It is a dual SPDT relay where each SPDT section is tied in parallel for greater power handling capability. The receiver is connected to the antenna through the relay on receive, and is allowed to "float" as an open-circuit on transmit. The relay is controlled through timing and logic circuitry so that it becomes energized before any RF is produced, and de-energized after the RF envelope has decayed to zero. While I own a K2/100, I have been using this transmitter with either a Drake 2C or R4C receiver until I homebrew my own. I just ran an experiment where I terminated the RCVE port with a 50 ohm load and measured the RF voltage across the load with a scope. On 40 meters where my transmitter produces 64 watts, I measured about 0.8v p-p across the terminated RCVE port, or about 1.6 mW (2 dBm) of RF. That equates to 46 dB of isolation at 7 MHz. This seems consistent with the isolation specs on the relay that can be found here: https://www.farnell.com/datasheets/1918250.pdf. The Drake receivers handle this signal level with ease, but I haven't tried the K2. Re: [Elecraft] K4 recommendation - wait for HD or no?
I recall reading *somewhere* the story of two hams that lived in adjacent lots about 300-500 feet apart. They cooperated and tried lots of remedies to eliminate interference with each other. They each wound up with a K3. When the upgrades for the 'S' became available, both installed the appropriate options in their K3 radios. After that they could operate within 10 KHz of each other without knowing- at legal limit. I also have several other Amateurs all living maybe 1 to 2 mile from me. All running 500 to 100 watts. I was very worried that the K4D would have issues with any of them when they were transmitting. So far the K4D had behaved as the K3 did, some interference, (not much), when the KW level fellow comes on line, and only on the same band. I have tested other bands while the KW level ham is transmitting, and if I am on a different band, I can not hear him... With regards to the Amateur running 500 watts a mile from me, the K4D behaves marginally BETTER than the K3 did. That is not the same as having another ham a one wavelength away, as you describe, so your mileage WILL vary... I will NOT be purchasing the HD module, as it appears I do not need it... Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha Headphones
Proximity effect has nothing to do with the technology of the transducer, i.e. dynamic, condenser, electret, ribbon, etc. Proximity effect is due to the type of transducer, i.e. whether it is a pressure transducer or a pressure gradient transducer or a mix of the two. That determines the pickup pattern, and that also determines the amount of proximity effect the mike has. A pure pressure transducer has an omni-directional pickup pattern and absolutely no proximity effect. A pure pressure gradient transducer has a figure 8 pickup pattern (i.e. bidirectional cardiod) and the highest level of proximity effect. One of the most common pickup patterns is the cardioid pattern, which is a directional pattern and has a decent amount of proximity effect. Your experience with dynamic vs. condenser mics was probably more to do with the pickup pattern. There are a variety of "cardioid" patterns, one of them being hyper cardioid, which is more prevalent in condenser mikes. It is more directional than a cardioid and has further "reach", which would allow a vocalist to be further away from the mike and still be picked up well (but would fall of quicker if they moved off to the side). That further distance could significantly reduce or eliminate proximity effect. Another possibility is a sub cardioid pattern which is less directional than a standard cardioid pattern, which would also have less proximity effect at the same distance from the mike. Re: [Elecraft] QRP and Contesting
This is all good contesting advice Mike, especially regarding working dupes. Thanks for the SS QSO, John KK9A Mike Dodd N4CF wrote: I'll toss in my two cents I have fair-to-middlin' CW skills, and I've operated a lot of CW contests. I was surprised and disappointed to hear so many high-speed ops in this year's CW SS. In past years, I've been pleased with the moderate speeds. When I'm operating S&P, I almost always adjust my TX speed to match the running station's speed. it's only a hit or two on N1MM's Page Down key. I figure that's the considerate thing to do. I can comfortably copy at 25 wpm, so that's the speed I call CQ. If someone answers faster than I can copy, I don't hesitate to send QRS. If he ignores that comes back still too fast, I'll just hit F1 to start another CQ. If I can't copy part of his exchange, I'll ask for a repeat. There are plenty of reasons for bad copy, not just speed. QSB and QRM were present last weekend. I don't need to explain why I asked for a repeat! One final comment regarding dupes. The contesting club to which I belong has a mantra: "work all dupes!" There is no penalty, but there is the possibility that one op or both busted a QSO, so the second one is insurance. Just work 'em. you might take small time hit, but how much time would you spend sending B4 or DUPE, then explaining to the other op why you won't work him again? -- 73, Mike N4CF Louisa County, VA USA Elecraft K4D / KPA500 / KAT500 Carolina Windom up 45' __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] QRP and Contesting
Al, if you called CQ at 30WPM and they answered at 45WPM and you had to ask for repeats, you are not the lid! If they were running at a higher speed that you're comfortable with, you probably could figure out their info from QSOs before and after you. If it is not copyable you just have to move on. I personally did not see that many super speed ops but I did not S&P until late in the contest when most ops were begging. There were definitely some very good ops last weekend and I enjoyed all of my QSOs. 73, John KK9A (W4AAA in 2022 SS CW) Al Lorona W6LX wrote: I noticed this opposite phenomenon as soon as CW SS got started. It seemed that the average CW speed was way up this year. (I hadn't operated the SS in a couple of years, so this trend may have started a couple of years ago and I just now have experienced it.) My CW skill is decent, but even I got into hot water when copying some exchanges: Was that 378A? Or 377U? Asking for a repeat didn't always help, because at 45 WPM slight multipath distortions in the ionosphere start to mess with high-speed CW. Not a single op slowed down for me, even if I had to ask for multiple repeats. Then there's this: When you think about it, there's no incentive to help someone like me copy correctly. After all, if I copy incorrectly, I'm the one who gets penalized, not him. By asking for a repeat, all I'm doing (in his mind) is slowing him down on his run frequency. And probably ticking him off? I mean, 30 WPM with no repeats is actually faster than 40 WPM with some repeats. You may say, "Well, Al, you're a lid for entering a contest if you're unable to copy quickly enough to participate." Maybe so, but the obstinacy of operating at 40+ WPM no matter what shows a colossal disdain for the Little Pistols who are the bread and butter of the elite. [Elecraft] Fwd: Headphones
Neil, I'm glad you took this discussion in this direction. I, too, wear BTE aids and though I spend most time on CW, from time to time it is nice to work SSB. The chat here has got me thinking how I might use my Sennheiser headphones with foam pads as they are wonderful for music at least. They don't block out background noise but they are very comfortable. All I'd need to do is add a mic and I'd be good to go. I'm looking at the Grado Sr's right now so that could be an option. 73 - john - n0hj On Thu, Nov 3, 2022 at 11:23 AM Neil Foster wrote: > Dan Pressley is correctheadphone choice is personal. I really like the Sony MDR 7506 for <$100 that I believe you use for music listening but it also has no mic. Yes, but -- they are overkill for use in a ham station, mics are likely to be pro electrets, and thus complicated to hook up to a ham rig. And, BTW, until you spend pretty big bucks, they're not all that comfortable either! The Beyer and Sennheiser sets I use for listening to acoustic jazz are north of $300, and they don't have a mic. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Maybe it's just a supply issue that I was seeing. CM500 is a popular inexpensive ham headset and even though I do not own one, I was hoping that it was not discontinued.
