Re: [Elecraft] K2 receiver issues during contest?

2006-05-30 Thread n3drk

- Original Message -
From: Darwin, Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED]

some
On 40 CW, there were some strong signals to my 28' vertical. 30-40 dB
over S9 was not uncommon. I noticed with one of these stations, I could
hear clicks up and down the band for +/- several KHz. I though he had
key clicks. Then I found a 2nd signal that produced the same results.
Then a 3rd and a 4th. I suppose it is possible that all of them had
issues with key clicks but it is also possible that I've hit a limit in
the K2's ability to handle strong signals close in.

All of the signals were strong. K2 doesn't do this as a rule on S9
signals. In fact, this is the first time I've noticed it so I'm going
to say that signals 20 dB over S9 don't produce it (I'd have to double
check that though). This makes me think it is an issue with only very
strong signals.
--
Keith, just for clarification, You say 30-40dB over S9 for 4 stations caused
key clicks.
Then in the second paragraph you say that signals 20dB over S9 don't produce
it.
I think you are saying that before you installed the KAF2 the 20dB over S9
signals
did not have key clicks. Is that correct? If so why not take the KAF2 out of
the

circuit and see if that was the case?

Turns out that the K2 was so outstanding that it did and does compete with
the Big 3 Jim!
Nice post Jim and a different perspective of seeing the K2 in relation to
other rigs.

john-n3drk

IMHO, the K2 wasn't really meant to compete directly with most other HF
ham
rigs. Rather, it was meant to be an alternative to them, by focusing more
on
some things than the usual Yaecomwood. (CW performance, low power drain,
ability

of the owner to build and maintain, excellent receiver performance without
too much complexity, ability to add options over time, etc.) IOW, the K2
offers

a unique alternative.

But I still wish the knobs and displays were bigger.

Seeing joyful reports of snagging DX under challenging conditions, such
as just posted by Bill, KA3IXF, adds so much pleasure for me to this great
hobby. Not only are they testaments to the fine Elecraft products, but they
also attest to the operating skills of so many in the Elecraft Forum group.
Comparisons of DX worked don't mean much, however, until they include
antennas used. In Bill's case, the key words are with my homebrew,
helically wound dipole sitting on my window sill. Now, that's a challenge
well met. Good job, Bill!
To the phrase, Anybody can do it with power, I'd like to add, Anybody
can do it with low power and a good antenna. It's the hams in our happy
group who operate under extremely limited conditions that draw the most
admiration from me. I can't imagine how discouraging it must be at times for
someone living, for example, in a restrictive condo building having to run
QRP with wire tacked to an interior wall, a shortened vertical sticking out
a window in the darkness, or a stealth antenna tucked in a hidden location.
I know those antennas will work and have experimented successfully with them
myself, but the skills required to make long-distance contacts with such
limitations expresses to me the real heart of ham radio.
Hat's off to all of you operating in such a manner, and your
enthusiastic postings add a wonderful flavor to the daily forum. Keep the
joyful shouts coming!

If you mean at the rated output for 100% duty cycles modes, 40 watts out,
the answer is Yes. But I'd not try it at 100 watts. The 100 watt spec
assumes you are running SSB or CW that has a much, much lower duty cycle, so
the average power output remains 40 watts or less.

Several years ago I helped test the VCO stabilization mod and needed to
temperature-cycle the K2 as in normal heavy use. I did that be transmitting
into a dummy load for periods of 1/2 hour to 1 hour, occasionally longer. I
ran the K2 at 100 watts and keyed it in CW, using a repeating CW memory to
keep it running. The internal air temperature between the KPA100 and main K2
PCB got up over 50C (120F). The KPA100 heat sink was too hot to hold my hand
on it. Since the intent was to simulate very heavy use of the rig in a real
situation, I did not provide any ancillary cooling. I did that dozens of
times. No problems were encountered.

I did not run those tests on various bands, so I can't speak to any
significant temperature differences. But there are some slight differences
in efficiency. Does your KPA100 make a full 100 watts output on all bands?
If not, there might be a problem with your output filter on one or more
bands that is reducing the efficiency more than it should. That would
produce excess heat as well. If you are getting full rated output, I'd
expect that any differences noted are normal.

Be sure to tighten your final PA transistor mounting screws after several
hours of operation as described in the manual. That ensures you maintain the
intimate mechanical contact needed for efficient heat transfer. It only
needs to be done once. I think my screws took about 1/2 turn after the rig
was run in for several hours, then they remained snug.

As others have pointed out, there is exit cooling cleverly hidden between
the fins on the KPA100 heat sink at the forward end. So if you use the heat
sink to keep your coffee cup warm, don't spill any!

2006-01-26 Thread n3drk
What I found confusing is the lack of Official designation of what
constitutes Iambic A or B or in other rigs Iambic 1 or 2. There should be
some standardization. With some manufacturers Iambic A is Iambic 2 with
another manufacturer and visa versa. Eliminate Iambic 1 or 2 and desiginate
it as Iambic A or B and A is the more critical of the two and not very
forgiving! End the confusion.

John,

Sjpectrogram is a FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) spectrum analyzer program.
It's display is amplitude versus frequency. What you need to display the
Christmas Tree and CW waveforms is an oscilloscope display. In the
case of the Christmas Tree, the oscilloscope is set up to display RF drive
or audio on the horizontal axis and RF output on the vertical axis (the
oscilloscope is in X-Y mode, with x=drive, Y=RF out). For the cw envelope
you use the oscilloscope in the conventional mode where the horizontal
axis is time and the vertical axis is voltage. So the short answer to
your question is NO.

One dangerous (electrical) mistake was at 9 years old.

Sent away to Johnson Smith Co. for plans and parts
to make a
radio the ad said, used no batteries or electrical
power.

It turned out to be a crystal set complete with
cat-whisker, crystal, terminals, coil form, and wire.
I followed the directions faithfully and bought an old
junk store 50 cent headphone set (five weeks
allowance..)

I had no idea what an antenna or ground was, and
neither did anyone else in my family. So I put on the
headphones and inserted the bare antenna and ground
leads into the house power socket. There was a flash
and the house went dark. My mom excitedly replaced
the fuses. I inspected the circuit, reversed the two
wires and did it again. Same problem, but with a
stern warning never to do that again..

Another stupid mistake was committed a month ago as I
plugged in a new antique Heathkit Condenser checker
without checking the AC wiring. The person who wired
it long ago connected the hot side of the AC line to
the black ground probe and as soon as the probe
touched a chassis that I was working on, there was an
amazing blast of light and a bang just before the room
went black...I sat there for a very long moment
contemplating life,
and wondering if I was still here on earth. Could
feel my
pulse pounding in my temples, and that was a very good
sign.

Could have been easily killed either time. Guess there
must
be some other purpose for staying here on earth...
and I'm dying to find out what.

Wonder if Elecraft has considered a rig Registry page on their site.
owners could register by serial number, with call sign, options, perhaps
comments such as best QRPp DX. Anyone who didn't want to 'register their
rig, need not.

Might be fun to see who owns them, to be able to search by a call sign to
see if your friend has one, to print it out and see how many of them you
have or can work.

Just a thought in case there is interest

Merry Christmas!

Actually, guys, it DOES say old-fashioned bugs, a variation of the
straight

key on the rules page for SKN of the ARRL web site.

In many circles SKN has been expanded to encompass vintage radio
equipment
as well. Reminiscing about their early days in our hobby, many operators
use

SKN as the excuse to refurbish their old Viking, Heathkit, or Scout. You
will hear as many vintage radios on the air during SKN as you will variety
of keys. And you will hear signals generated using old-fashioned bugs, a
variation of the straight key. SKN is the time amateur radio recalls the
past, transporting it to the present.

Surely this horse is dead by now.

In addition most of those keys, including the expensive one, have no

avoiding the issue of keeping contacts clean.

Is that all worth the money? Not to me, but it appears to be to a number of

Of course John. Do you expect any better than the man who tries to

That goes for ANY power level, not just milliwatting. The gain of a beam
can

often (not always) squirt more power where you need it to go than a
vertical. Sometimes the low take-off angle of a GOOD vertical can trump a
beam, though.

I have only one problem using a beam...one I can live with. Hi. Many QRP
receivers are very hot with low noise. That coupled with my TH7DX at 60'
means I can hear a lot of stations that would never be able to hear me. A
beam gives you gain on both receive and transmit, but a 100 mW output
signal

effectively doubled or even quadrupled with a beam is still a pretty puny
signal for the guy at the other end.

But you never know. I have two rules:

1. Never tell them up front you are QRP. It's an ancient Black Magic
incantation that makes people deaf.

2. Call every station you want to talk to regardless of the S-meter. The
worst that can happen is they won't come back to you. I can't tell you how
many QSOs I've had with 100 watters who were S3 to me and (because of Rule
1) I was S5 or greater to them with 5 watts or less.

I might add a 3rd rule, but at the risk of stepping on some toes:
3. Stay away from QRP frequencies unless you are rock-bound. You will find
a
lot more activity and hams willing to dig deep for weak signals on the
FISTS

frequencies and the low end of the band of choice. FISTS guys even seem to
be immune to the QRP Deafness Curse.

Anyway, a beam is a great QRP accessory. Any time you have an opportunity
to

throw more metal higher in the sky, it can be worthwhile.

BTW, I hope you are going to report back with your ham experiences aboard
the boat. I was thinking that many of the recommendations you received for
antennas ignore the fact that you are actually at sea. Many of the
recommendations are going to fold right up in those conditions, though
they

would work fine in most portable conditions.

Re: [Elecraft] K7C

2005-10-04 Thread n3drk
I disagree. If a person is calling on the dx stations frequency no one
should say UP. I listened to one guy yesterday from Europe and he nominated
himself to be the DX COP for 2 hours. This guys job was to tell others UP.
For Two Entire Hours! He was not even calling the K7C, just telling others
UP and sometimes how much UP. One person asked if the K7C was listening UP
or DOWN and this moron started a conversation with him. These hams today do
not know how to listen and turn the vfo knob. Ham radio is not that
difficult. We do not need people like this. It is bad enough when a person
who makes the ole vfo mistake but to listen to the dx cops who consistantly
xmit on the dx frequency need to really observe the harm they actually
cause. I for one had made that mistake by using the wrong vfo but to have 4
people telling me up makes it much worse.

Something to keep in mind, the MAJORITY of major
DXpeditions work split 1 to 5 kHz up. If K7C has made
any mistakes, it's probably working simplex a few
times when things were quiet.
Folks in Az to the Pacific coast generally will hear
them sooner and louder, but it does not mean that they
are having reciprocal propagation. They may be swamped
by JAs and hardly hearing a W7 with 5 elements and
2KW.
The worst problems are folks calling others lids OTA
on top of the DX. What's the point of that? UP
sometimes helps, even veterans (who, like me from time
to time, have hit RIT instead of XIT or switched out
the 2nd VFO). Stuff happens... Patience pays!
Don't give up, look for better opportunities...

Hi.

I was trying to build a field portable quick to
install
antenna and I really liked what I read about an end
fed
halfwave having a very low angle of radiation and only

requiring a very short counterpoise however
I remembered that the KXAT1 manual stated not to use
lengths near a halfwave as they would be outside the
matching range.

So... I decided that I would cut an antenna to 33ft
(20m halfwave), and then I would cut it back a foot at
a time until the KXAT1 found a match.

I started at 33.25ft vertical but I did leave a pair
of
18.5ft counterpoise wires running at about 2 feet
above the ground connected to the ground terminal.

I tuned up and ... 1.2:1 match on 20m!

I then proceeded to work KF6GC with 2W (almost 4000km)
in the middle of a K Index = 8 solar storm! So I know
the antenna worked well.

I modelled it in EZNEC and the impedance at the base
of that antenna should have been 970 + j 1700 ohms,
so I am surprised that the KXAT1 was able to match it.

Any comments? Was it because I left the counterpoises
connected that it worked so well? If I remove the
counterpoises in the NEC model the impedance increases
and becomes inductive to 1456 - j 1819 ohms.

Comments?

PS. I am only learning in this stuff so forgive any
overly simplistic analysis!!

Thanks,
Martin.

[Elecraft] K2 speaker

2005-07-24 Thread n3drk
Has anyone had a problem with their K2 speaker? Mine sounds like something is
loose whenever I listen to cw at around 60% volume, like something vibrating. I
opened the rig up and everything is very secure so I am wondering if it is the
speaker.

2005 Spring QSO Party Team Championship. We are members of the Knightlites QRP
Club. We took First Place using our K2's. Not bad for operating time of around
4 hours.

Do a search for Connecticut Solar. I purchased a couple of panels from them.
You will also need a controller.

Best of Luck.

Actually, I had a question that is in a similar vein.

I bought a buddipole, and plan on taking my K2/100 camping. I began to
research batteries, such as gell cell and glass matt batteries, and solar
charging. My guess is that I might operate about 4 to 5 hours per day,
running up to the full gallon. Operating modes would be SSB, CW and
while
my laptop batteries held up, PSK. I also plan on being out in the woods
for

probably a week at a time.

There is so much on the web, I just cannot separate out what would work,
from overkill. In spite of reading several treatises, I still am not sure
whether I would want a gell cell or a glass matt battery. My question
(finally) - I'd like to hear from people on the list who have a
battery/solar recharging system that works well and will run the K2/100
for

the 4 to 5 hours per day, listing the components he or she is using.

Given the size and weight of batteries, I had hoped to use a 36 Ah
battery,

and then recharge it with solar power. But it seems that these batteries
charge rather slowly, and that might not be possible. For example, I
think

it is powerportstore.com that has a 1.2 amp flexible solar panel recharger
that puts out approximately 5.6 - 7 Ah per day. The solar panel is about
$

500.00.The general size/weight and price is ok, but it doesn't appear
that such output would be sufficient to fully recharge a big battery.

I think I'd rather duplicate what has worked for someone else, than try to
reinvent the wheel. Thanks in advance. Tom W6EIJ

I am working on a keying scheme/sequencer that will work with several
different model radios, and also function to safely provide excitation
drive and
over-drive protection. It is not oriented toward the Elecraft radios but,
I am
keeping them in mind as well. Let me know if you donâ?Tt find a more
specific

answer!

[Elecraft] question on part

2005-05-14 Thread n3drk
The male connector for the dc supply on the back of the K2 mates with
the dc power jack. In the manual it states this is a 2.1mm male
connector. What are the inside and outer dimensions?

Sounds like you are looking at the qth.net Elecraft archive. We have two
 different archives.

The one on qth.net is -not- searchable.

The one on ac6rm.net is more advanced and -is- searchable by keyword.
It also displays each day of postings by subject in a web format for
 easy daily scanning.

Both can be reached by links from the email list page on our web site at:
