[Elecraft] K3 Strange noise
Recently I've been hearing a strange noise. I've installed the latest FW 2.46 but I'm not sure when this started. It's only audible from an external speaker and cannot be heard through the front headphone jack. The noise is a random, pulsating tone of about 360Hz and sounds a bit like RTTY but only one tone. It follows the band noise. It shows up on any band, any frequency. With the antenna disconnected, it disappears. It can be heard in any mode. I can swing the manual notch across the spectrum and it disappears when set to about 360HZ. Please someone check for this. Settings: 1. Antenna connected 2. Tune to any band, any mode. 3. Do not tune in a signal. 4. Must use an external speaker plugged into rear jack. 5. Fitler opened wide. 6. Listen closley under the band noise for low pitch, pulsating tone around 320 to 400 hz. Let me know if you hear anything like this. Thanks. Steve Ellington [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Ferrite transformer losses, 43-foot vertical and the K3
Phil. Questions: 1. Why would one use a balun when both the antenna and coax are unbalanced? Wouldn't a unun be appropriate? 2. What are the swrs at the balun? The swr at the K3 doesn't tell us much since the length of the coax affects it greatly. Steve Ellington N4LQ [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Phil Debbie Salas [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, September 19, 2008 4:21 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Ferrite transformer losses, 43-foot vertical and the K3 Because of some earlier discussions here, I wanted to actually measure losses in a 4:1 ferrite transformer. I wanted this info as I have a home-brew 43-foot vertical and these transformers are what seem to be recommended for matching to this antenna. I used a FT240-61 ferrite toroid which has a permeability of 125. I chose 16-gauge speaker wire to experiment with. This is because I want to eventually use high voltage wire, and 16-gauge is the largest gauge 2-conductor high-voltage wire I could find (McMaster-Carr 9634T701 @ $2.65/foot). I built a 4:1 unun, as I am feeding an unbalanced vertical antenna. And I decided to go with a voltage balun as this is a simpler structure than a current balun or unun. With a little experimentation, I was able to build a very good 1.8-30 MHz 4:1 unun. This consists of 12-turns of the 16-gauge speaker wire on the FT-240-61. As the voltage balun is a little inductive causing degradation at the higher frequencies, I tuned this out with a 33pf capacitor across the 50 ohm input. This gave me a transformer with 1.2:1 SWR at 1.8 MHz, but less than 1.1:1 from 3.5-30 MHz. In order to measure loss, I built a second identical transformer and connected these back-to-back. I measured insertion loss with both an Array Solutions PowerMaster, and a Tektronix TDS-2200 digital oscilloscope. I made all measurements with 20 watts of RF power on my workbench. Bottom line: Loss through both transformers was less than ½-watt (20 watts forward power) from 1.8-30 MHz. This is just a little over 1% of loss in each transformer. Even if my measurements are off by a factor of two, this is still pretty much insignificant loss. Next I installed one of these transformers at the base of my 43-foot vertical. My radial system isn't the best in the world because of the space I'm restricted to. I have about a dozen random-length radials with lengths up to about 50-feet. My transmission line is 60-feet of Andrew ½-inch Heliax that transitions to a 3-foot section of LMR-400 inside my house going to the K3. My Array Solutions PowerMaster is located immediately at the output of the K3. The SWR measured with the PowerMaster was as follows: 160: 4.9:1 80: 6.3:1 60: 3.3:1 40: 3.2:1 30: 3.2:1 20: 3:1 17: 2.1:1 15: 1.9:1 12: 1.4:1 10: 2.2:1 Obviously, these mismatches are easily handled by the internal K3 auto-tuner. And line loss is minimal because the mismatch isn't very high, and the transmission line is very low loss. The 16-gauge speaker wire on the FT240-61 core seems to be working fine even with 600 watts out of my ALS-600 amplifier. However, I do have some of that expensive McMaster-Carr high-voltage wire on order. Anyway, I just thought I'd share these measurements with the group. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Rear panel mike socket; stereo or mono?
Normally a computer mic. has a condenser element and requires DC bias via the mic. jack. Don't use a mono adapter. Set your menu for rPH bias. The 'mono' label is tricky. Been trying out a pc type headset with boom mike and a 3.5mm stereo plug on the mike lead. Having what I like to think of as a logical mind(?), I made up a 3.5mm stereo to mono adapter to plug into the socket on the rear of the K3 which is labeled 'mono'. This 'sort of' worked but kept losing the connection intermittently. The adapter plug did seem to be a bit of a loose fit which caused me have a closer look at the KIO3 analogue board and I noticed that the mono mike socket appeared to be a stereo type with presumably, just the tip connected. Anyhow I just plugged the stereo plug from the boom mike straight into the 'mono' socket and it works fine, better fit too. Can't find any mention of this in the manual so wondering if the use of a stereo plug is the recommended way...? 73, Stewart Rolfe, GW0ETF (K3 145) PS. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Harmonic Distortion
Jim None of those things helps. I can reduce my LINE OUT gain to 1 and still see the 3rd harmonic easily on the waterfall. I've had many rigs and this is the first to do this. There was a thread about this not long ago. Do a nabble search on ghost. There is also some distortion in the speaker output but I'm told that this is a separate amplifier. This prevents distortion that could occur in the output transformer. 3) Adjust the input gain of your computer so that you have enough signal for the decoder to function, but not enough to cause distortion. Re: [Elecraft] Kent Single Lever Paddles
It's not the single vs. dual lever issue that bothers these guys. It's the iambic mode, a or b. Mode B has been the standard since the early 70's. TenTec came out with their KR-40 which is mode b and ever since then mode A has been a step child. All JA rigs use mode B now. Basically, mode B has enough brains to know if you held in a lever long enough to produce the last element without actually starting to send it. People who learned on mode B, trying to send the letter C on a mode A machine will end up sending the letter K. The last dit is dropped because it wants you to hold in the dit button until that dit has started to form. Mode A people who try to send C end up sending KA _._._ because they hold the dit lever in too long. Both modes are iambic since holding in both levers results in alternate dits and dahs. It's just a matter of when to let go! A single lever paddle works equally well with either mode. In fact when you consider the entire alphabet, less finger movement is required with the single lever paddle. This came as a shock to me. Check the letter C. On a single lever we swing left, right, left, right. That's 4 movements. With duals, we (push left and hold), (push right and hold), (release left), (release right) for letter C. So we have the same number of movements with either paddle. Now let's do A. With single lever we swing left, swing right, release. 3 moves. With duals, we push left and hold, push right, release left, release right. 4 moves! It all happens so fast that you don't realize you are doing it. The Kent single lever paddle is a precision device. I prefer a wider finger piece over the thin paddle Kent uses however. The K3 works well with either single or duals. It doesn't know the difference. Gary Surrency responded that it was not but would be considered. within days the answer came back that it would not be supported due to the small number of users affected. At first I was a little annoyed but now I am all right with that decision because I have found that I can in fact use my Kent paddle with a slap and dash technique with the K3 internal keyer just the way it is. 1. I changed my weighting to 1.25 and selected MODE A. 2. I used the TEXT DECODE function to get feedback. 3. I made sure I was consistently as fast as possible with my keying of elements within a character when switching from dot(s) to dash(es). This technique cured my problem of things like CQ being seen NNMET Using the TEXT DECODE function also helped with getting rid of unwanted Farnsworth spacing between characters. The better I get at hearing CW the more annoying it becomes. It also makes sending a more natural rhythm. BTW, before I worked this method out I hooked up my microHam CW Keyer and used it and it worked FB with no effort on my part but I resented having an extra box and extra cables on my desk! In an attempt to clean up my station I went back to using the K3 keyer and worked things out! Not only did I get rid of the external keyer and cables but now the Kent single lever paddle is plugged into the paddle jack and so TEXT DECODE as well as TERMINAL mode in the K3 Utility both work on send and receive. When I tune to a CW signal with any filter configuration although less pronounced using 250Hz filter the tone of the signal is good. But when I tune away from it and QSY up the band the tone gets higher in frequency I can hear what I would call ringing and it is very slight but enough for it to be anoying. This does not always happen and may be if I press a combination of keys like NR, NB, WIDTH, SHIFT it causes this to go away, I haven't worked out if it is indeed a combination of keys or not. I've tried a different set of headphones just in case the headphones (Heil) were rattling but it is the same. This happens too on SSB as you tune away from the signal and is randomly there or not. Perhaps there are settings which optimize this? I have the RX EQ set up to cut the last 2 high frequencies off by 6dB and 10dB but it seems to make no difference how I set these. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Heil Adapter, which one?
Eric Eric Bob Heil needs to be straightened out on this since he's telling people to buy the Yaesu adapter. Personally I think there's a market here for a desk mic. with Elecraft's name on it. Steve Ellington [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, August 07, 2008 12:33 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Heil Adapter, which one? I'd like to clarify this point. Starting with the K2 in 1998, we designed our 'Elecraft Standard' 8 pin microphone connector to be compatible with the Kenwood -Dynamic- microphone pin out that is used on their HF radios, which represents the vast majority of 'Kenwood' style microphones out there. (Especially in 1998.) The other pins referred to below are only used for the electret element versions of the Kenwood microphones, which we intentionally did not design for. We never intended to work on every possible microphone combination used on Kenwood radios. I think the confusion on this issue arose when people started trying to use microphones that Kenwood sells on its VHF/UHF radios, some of which are of the electret variety and require power/bias on a separate pin. We never intended to be directly pin compatible with those microphones, since we were targeting the HF market. (It is quite easy though to modify the connector pin out on those mics to get the required voltage from the K3.) It should also be noted that most radio manufacturers have a microphone pin out that is unique to their product line. We broke this mold by picking what we felt was a widely used pin out for dynamic microphones to widen the usability of the K2 and subsequently the K3. This immediately opened up a wide range of mics for immediate use on the K2/K3 (-and- reduced our direct microphone sales). In any case, to help clarify this in the future, we'll start reworking our K2/K3 documentation to use the phrase 'generally pin compatible with Kenwood -dynamic- microphone pin outs.' ;-) 73, Eric WA6HHQ P.S. Yes, the 'Kenwood' Heil adapter is the correct one to use with their microphones and our rigs. Charles Harpole wrote: Elecraft K3 front mic socket (8 pin) is basically Kenwood standard, but Elecraft forgot to check the full pin-out and mistakenly reversed two pins that are used only on Kenwood hand mics and others not usually in the HF ham shack. [Elecraft] K3 Heil Adapter, which one?
I was thinking about ordering a Heil headset and had a question about which adapter to order. I though it would turn out to be the Kenwood adpt. According to Bob Heil himselfIt's the Yaesu adapter. The confusion never ends. Yaesu had several ways of configuring their 8 pin mic jack. I read about some difference in Kenwood vs. the K3's pinout and now this. See Bob's replay to my query below. So who is confused? I sure am. Hi Steve Thanks for your note. Yes, there IS confusion because Elecraft began as a kit primarily. They suggested you follow Kenwood pin out but as you built it that was so nice and easy to change. They went to a Yaesu configuration with the K3. There is no confusion here. Yaesu. Never was anything else that I knew of. That works well. Ten Tec is using this same pin out and several of the QRP kits are following that so this is all good Steve. As far as our products - ANY of the dynamic elements work so for the headset, you use the AD-1Y (Yaesu) adapter and the headset using our HC 5 element. This is a terrific combination. The AD-1Y adapter has a 1/4 female output for the HS 2 or FS 2 PTT control. For microphones I would look at the PR 781 or GOLDLINE GM 5. Cable is the CC-1Y and again that has output for the PTT control of our handswitch of footswitch. Hope this helps. Let me know how best I can help form here, Steve. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Heil Microphones
I've always though the entire Heil thing was bunk They use the same little element in all mics and the shape-size of the case gives them a little different sound. They paint them gold and install them in large, empty metal cases to help our ego. I am now using a cheap computer headset and with the new ESSB mode, I'm getting glowing audio reports without asking. The change to ESSB was instantly noticed by locals and drew rave comments. Any decent mic. with a flat response and a wind shield can be made to sound equal or better than a Heil by adjusting the EQ. The 1/8 inputs on the back of the K3 are a Godsend. A PTT mic. would be nice but I just use a foot switch plugged into the PTT jack on the back (another cool feature). Sometimes I put the foot switch on the desktop and it becomes a pound-to-talk button. Re: [Elecraft] Sidetone Monitor Preference Opinions
CW sidetone should follow the AF gain control and be adjustable so they are about the same level. Why would anyone want a fixed sidetone level? Changing from speaker to headphones requires readjustment of the sidetone level. When the xyl turns on the washing machine, I have to turn up the AF gain then the sidetone is buried in noise so I have to crank it up. Many of us with Omni VI's performed a simple mod that allowed sidetone to track with the AF gain. Kenwood got it right with tracking sidetone. I think most Icoms do too. Yaesu was really bad. On the MP you had to reach behind the rig and find a little knob to change sidetone level!! Do you like things better the way the K3 does things where the monitor level is a fixed output regardless of the AF knob. Or is the way the K1 does things more preferred. The STL menu entry allows one to set the side tone monitor as an offset from the RX level. So you set the monitor level and it gets louder or quieter as you adjust the AF Gain. My personal preference is the K1 method. I like this because if my wife is sleeping then I like to turn down the volume (if not go all the way and use headphones). Re: [Elecraft] Sidetone Monitor Preference Opinions
David I do have the K3 and know how to adjust the sidetone. I just prefer having the AF gain and sidetone track to one control. Also, I like to be able to adjust the sidetone level while sending CW which you can't do on the K3. When you push the mon button you get a constant sidetone. You cannot hear the other guy sending no can you send cw yourself while doing this. This is very weird and I have never seen a rig act like this. It's not a deal breaker but it sure seems crude. Rigs such as the IC-756PRO have a little sidetone level knob that allows you to simply increase or decrease the sidetone level while sending or receiving with no interruptions. That's how it should be. Again I agree. Changing the sidetone level or pitch requires us to listen to the constant tone which covers up everything. I think the intent was good but a bit impractical. Not sure I'd like to have it vary with the AF Gain. I think I like having it as a reference audio level. Mine is set at 25. What I would like is the option to adjust the PITCH without hearing the sidetone. In other words, listening to a weak signal I want to adjust it's pitch (offset) for best copy. Different signal conditions can warrant the use of different pitches for optimum copy. But you can't do this with the sidetone overriding the received audio. Even if you set the sideone level to zero the received audio is blocked whenever PITCH is on. 73, Drew AF2Z On Sun, 27 Jul 2008 22:53:14 -0700, Brett (KC7OTG) wrote: ?Just out of curiosity what do you gentlemen prefer? Re: [Elecraft] Sidetone Monitor Preference Opinions
Good point and there's probably no one answer to this therefore it should be made configurable. At least, the constant tone feature for level and pitch should be optional. Basically, if I could just reach for a knob and turn it when I want to change sidetone level during a QSO, I would be happy. Oh..heck...I'm already happy but this gives us something to discuss. Re: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Antennas in trees
I use a reel with 6 lb line and a wrist rocket from Walmart with a lead fishing weight. Lay the reel on the ground and shoot the weight over the top of the tree. I try to avoid large limbs. You want the line over the soft bushy limbs. They act as a spring or shock absorber. Use the line to pull up some nylon twine then use the twine to pull up your rope. The wind can blow all it wants and those soft limbs act like a nice cushion. I've even been know to run insulated antenna wire right through a tree with no ill effects on the HF bands. At my former QTH, Ellijay GA, I noticed that in very gusty conditions sometimes the support trees moved in opposite directions at the same time. I decided to make my counterweight out of an eight foot length of 5/16 chain. Put about a third of the length of the chain on the ground during no wind conditions. Now as the wind moves the trees more of less of the chain gets lifted off the ground. This gives a gradual increment in the weight of the counterweight. The antenna that I had up was 88' of #18 insulatd wire up 40', center fed with 450 Ohm line. With this antenna I got into ECN on 40 and 20 using the K1 just about every time I tried. (Kevin, wish I could find a place for this type of antenna where I now live.) I was concerned about the sudden change of weight caused by a solid one piece weight hitting the ground or lifted off the ground. With one third of the chain on the ground the weight does not swing in the breeze. 73, Ty, W1TF, K1 #1423, K3 #696 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Using a set of computer speakers which have their own gain control allows you to adjust the overall AF gain, including the sidetone then use the AF gain control on the K3 to adjust for band noise. But as one poster said, you could turn down the AF gain in that case as a quick interim cure. During noisy contests, I like the keep the sidetone level high. A dedicated knob would be nice, but not worth the panel space for just that function. Yes, both pitches are the same. But as it is now you cannot hear the effect on the signal itself while adjusting PITCH-- the received audio is cut off and the sidetone comes on. This makes it difficult to tell what pitch is optimum for the particular signal and the given reception conditions. IOW, I don't really care what the sidetone pitch is-- one is as good as another. It is the offset pitch of the signal that is important. So why not be able to adjust it for best copy under current conditions? We can adjust the volume of a signal while listening to it; so why not the pitch? Depending on noise, QRM, keying characteristics, speed, etc. you might want to alter the pitch for better copy. [Elecraft] 80m QRN LP-PAN does it's thing
I just completed a cw qso on 80m. Static is running 10 - 20 db over S9 tonight. There is nearly 1000 miles between us and the other station was using a magnetic loop antenna for transmitting made from 18ft. of copper pipe, 3ft. above the ground. Using the K3 under these conditions was rough. I tried every filter and NR setting and kept having trouble with static pumping the agc and blipping out letters. AGC fast or slow made no difference. I then switched over to the LP-PAN which in addition to being a bandscope, functions as my second receiver. I was able to copy him perfectly with the LP-PAN, even with it's agc on slow, there is no pumping which seems rather strange to me. Maybe some adjustment to the agc-slp or agc-thr would help. Any suggestions for QRN conditions? Steve Ellington [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. I have changed a few SMTs and it's not easy no matter what people tell you. I used a product called Chip Quick. Go here: http://www.chipquik.com/ Their solder melts at 135 degrees F., mixes with the original solder and makes chip removal much easier. DLY provides a fixed (but user selectable) time delay between the two channels. I use DLY 3. Wayne prefers DLY 5. Re: [Elecraft] 250 HZ XFIL QUESTION
Mark Why did you put that 250hz filter in slot 5 then select filter 2? Steve Ellington [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Mark [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 8:42 PM Subject: [Elecraft] 250 HZ XFIL QUESTION The below applies to cw mode only at this time. I have a basic K3 2.7hz 100 watt unit. Tonite I added an 8 pole 250 hz filter. After installation and software setup it appears that the filter does not work when I select filter 2. The radio was purchased assembled and the 2.7 hz filter is in slot one and i placed the 250hz filter in slot 5. However - if I select Dual Passband - the filter appears to work. The display shows both filter skirts and the bandwidth of the received signal is obviously isolated by the narrow setting. My questions are these: Do I have to use dual passband to use the 2nd filter? Does dual passband use some combination of main filter (2.7) and 250hz DSP filtering instead of passing the signal thru the first crystal filter and then the 250 hz crystal filter? If I have the K3 software setup correctly - if I select the 2nd filter - does this bypass the 2.7 hz filter and use the 2nd filter; and if so, why would it appear that my 250 hz filter is not passing a signal in this mode while it appears that it's passing it in Dual Passband mode. I'm aware that i've probably phrased my questions incomprehensibly, but I'm just wondering if i'm getting any use out of my 2nd 250hz crystal, or if it's not working because of some software setup error i've made or whether it's defective. Two words: buffer amp. Incidentally, the K3 *is* an SDR! Somewhat. It may be on the inside but to those of us on the outside it is still a monolithic radio. It is also locked into the processing power that it now has. It is difficult to take advantage of Moore's Law the way it is currently designed. (Moore's Law says that computing power per dollar doubles every 18 months. Anyone buying a PC understands this.) Also, we can't make changes. We are dependent on Lyle and Wayne to have the same interest we do in the features we want and we need them to do the work. This is the disadvantage of a closed environment. I have been on the fence for quite some time and have finally decided to go the route of a Flex 5000 instead of a K3. Even tho' I think that the K3 has a better receiver for traditional modes, I believe that the open software of the Flex and other hardware like the SoftRock will end up offering me more in the long run. Yes I give up some in BDR and IP3 but I get back huge flexibility and expandability with new modulation schemes. I can even hack the code if I want. So it is more appealing to the engineer/hacker in me. But I plan to stick with the K2 as a portable rig. I still really like that little radio. I believe the K3 is without a doubt the best HF rig on the market right now and Elecraft will continue improving it based on our experiences and contributions. We should not be worried about accusations of whining and ME generations. Our complaints and suggestions are being monitored by Elecraft. Some can and will be adapted and some will not. The bandswitch issue is not a deal breaker for me or anyone else I know of. Yes, I would have done it differently. I would have just put one knob on the front panel for bandswitching instead of the band button. Many on here apparently think they could do a better job with their better ideas. I'm willing to simply learn how to operate a new radio whether or not it has one button band selection, band stacking functions, or size issues, etc.etc.etc. So much of it comes across as whining, not constructive suggestions. Everyone has the right to make their own choice when purchasing a radio. If they don't like their K3, they can sell it and buy something that satisfies their ME without having to compromise. Because the 00 - 09 locations are Quick Memories they are overwritten immediately when the numeric keypad entry is pressed. I just discovered a new way to abuse the K3 using this system. I programmed my Quick Memories to take me to frequencies in the CW part of each band, then M1 - M4 to take me to different parts of the band. So after pressing MV, 5 to take me to 15m (CW) I pressed MV, M3 to go to a different part of the band. Only either I didn't press MV hard enough so it didn't register, or I had a senior moment and didn't press it at all, so I transmitted the programmed contents of memory 3 at 100W into an untuned antenna. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Bandswitching-My experiences to Date
Dave: (Another fine LQ) I'd still prefer the ICOM/TenTec method of bandswitch but maybe once we get the LP-Pan and PowerSDR running full time, band changing will be 'point and click'. I plan to use a dedicated PC for the K3 and a separate PC for internet and other forms of entertainment. I know many people who have Flex rigs do the same. If this system works as it should, the K3 would like using a Flex5000 but with a cw transmitter that works as it should. The LP-PAN should provide even more entertainment as a separate receiver although I'm not sure how one will switch the tuning between the K3 and the PAN. Perhaps this will all come clear once we get these gadgets hooked up. Having been a user of Icom and Ten Tec gear for many years, I too admit that this was one of my reservations when first considering my K3 purchase over a year ago. Now after almost four months of K3 use, I wanted to past a comment directed at those considering a K3 who believe that this issue may be a deal breaker. IMO it is not. It takes a bit of time and study to adapt to this approach of Elecraft's UI, but the K3 has some remarkable and flexible alternatives. Over the years I have never had much use for transceiver memories as implemented by most JA manufacturers, but he K3' approach to memories and their flexibility is awesome once you master them. Between general memories, memories assignable to the number keys and the 'within band' memories you can quickly replicate something very similar to dedicated bandswitches. One of the best tutorials on this is found on the K3 Wiki website. If you have not discovered it you should look it up. Having now programed the K3's number keys as memories for a portion of each band and the 'within band' memories (M1-M4) to another portion of the same band, I have something approaching dedicated bandswitches. It took a while to discover how to do this but now changing bands is second nature. I almost never use the K3 up and down bandswitch any more, The programmable memories are just that much quicker. I had a talk with Wayne about this at Dayton. He asked if I would consider sharing my personal comments on the reflector. Thus my post here. If at some time in the future when the K3 wish list has shrunken down, should Elecraft develop an outboard combination keypad/bandswitch along the lines of what Icom offered for the venerable IC-751A way back, I'm sure some of us would welcome it but until then I find the use of programmed memories for bandswitching to be just fine. [Elecraft] K3 Need for compressor
It seems that without the compressor it is difficult to obtain full SSB output. I'm listening to a guy right now on 160m in QSO. He had is compression on and as can be expected, was picking up plenty of fan noise from his amplifier. He was advised to turn off the compression. This he did and the fan noise went away but he complained about insufficient drive to his amp and his K3 was only putting out 38 watts now. I don't have a decent peak reading wattmeter but I think weak RF output is a common complaint. I just wonder if Elecraft expects everyone to run some degree of compression? [Elecraft] K3 Flat Audio?
Someone kindly mentioned SR5 here so I downloaded it and observed that my audio from the K3 had a pronounced peak around 1600 Hz. I compensated for this by adjusting the K3's RX equalizer so that EQ (6) is -4db, EQ (7) is -4db and EQ (8) is -2db. I now have a flat response across the spectrum. QRN is less distracting now. Also, my waterfall on MIxw is nice and even all the way across now. This isn't very scientific. I was just using band noise to adjust the EQ for a flat response but since band noise is what I'm dealing with, I felt it was adequate. Question is: Has anyone else noticed this? Do you think it's something to do with filter shape? Maybe the audio amp. is indeed flat but the filters aren't and I'm compensating for them. WhateverI'm just glad there K3 has that nice EQ! Re: [Elecraft] K3: Optimizing TEXT DECode for CW
I tuned in a couple of guys on 40m tonight who were going between 50 - 55 WPM. I set the decode to 30-90 but it wouldn't decode much of anything except a few words now and then. Signals were very strong. No amount of tweaking the RF gain or bandwidth helped. No biggie though. Mixw couldn't do it either. My ears did fine. Fast code seems to take a bit of time to sync up and as soon as the op skips a beat or something, it seems to loose track of what it's doing. Steve Ellington [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: KM5Q [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 12:10 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K3: Optimizing TEXT DECode for CW The K3 TEXT DEC system works well on CW signals that are above the noise level, but to use it for weaker signals and noisy conditions requires some understanding and technique. Here's what I learned. The decoder gets its signal from the same trigger as the CWT indicator bar. See for yourself -- When your display is in CWT mode, play with the RF gain so the CWT bar goes on and off. The moment it disappears, the decoding stops. As soon as the CWT bar flickers with noise, the decoder TRIES to read the on/off signal. If the CWT bar is responding to clean code, you will get good text. If it isn't code, unfortunately, the decoder tries anyway, and produces junk text. If the CW signal is audible but is not stronger than the noise, the CWT bar will flicker from the noise AND the CW, and the decoder will show too much junk. Once you accept that, you can reduce frustration. To minimize junk text from QRN, hold TEXT DEC, then adjust threshold (thr ...) upward until it squelches the CWT bar. Now, The text decode will work if there is CW signal above the noise. But now, set the threshold a little lower, slightly too sensitive. This will allow for varying conditions. When noise works the CWT bar, reduce the RF GAIN until the bar disappears. This is how to fine-tune the threshold quickly. If you get static crashes or other erratic noise triggering the decode, don't let IISKSK IEN SKSK distract you. Watch the CWT bar. Let THAT tell you when to watch the text -- when it LOOKS like code rather than noise. Maybe future firmware will improve the decoder so it will ignore noise, but for now, this is the best way I have found to use it. With the Flex Radio, you don't have a choice. You must use the computer or you have no radio. Also, as good as the Flex's receiver is, it can't transmit CW worth a hoot and probably never will. It's got a clunky, slow and loud relay that will never be capable of satisfying us QSK types. For SSB, it is fine. I would like to see a bandscope adapter with an IF input and VGA output for use with a PC monitor. Things get complicated however when you want point and click tuning as on the Flex. I guess the adapter needs a mouse port! I guess the bottom line is: How much would one be willing to pay for this? Personally I would pay quiet a bit for a bolt on bandscope. Re: [Elecraft] RTTY filter for K3
Axel I was the first to respond to your question. I told you that I was listening to RTTY through the 200 Hz, 5 pole filter and it worked fine. Then the experts came on here and using many words, explained why it couldn't work because it is too narrow. Maybe they do not actually have the filter but I do. Looking at the waterfall on MixW, 200Hz filter engaged, a RTTY signal easily fits within the waterfall's passband with a little room on either side. But to tell you the truth, I am still somewhat uncertain, which filter to order with my K3. One of my theory books about HF technology, modulation, bandwidth and so forth, tells me, that the necessary bandwidth for a 170 Hz shift RTTY signal should be around 320 Hz. Now some of you guys write, that you are using a 250 Hz filter for RTTY operation. A 250 Hz filter though has this 250 Hz (ok, a few Hz more in reality) bandwidth at - 6dB attenuation, which means that the actual bandwidth at about 0 db is even less. So my understanding for a 170 Hz shift RTTY operation is, to use a filter of at least 400 - 500 Hz (at -6dB) in order to get all the information through the filter. This I can confirm also with my current OMNI VI+ which does not allow me to copy RTTY signals with a 250 Hz filter . Re: [Elecraft] RTTY filter for K3
I'm using DATA A mode. Contrary to the manual, the Dual Tone RTTY filter will not activate in DATA A mode. When attempted, the display shows N/A. To use the DTF, I changed to AFSK A mode. This allows the DTF to work however the center frequency of the IF changes from 1500Hz to 1356Hz. I will notify Elecraft about these. As far as copying RTTY with the 200hz filter and DTFIt appears to work fine. The only difference I could detect on the waterfall with DTF turned on is the obvious hole between the filter peaks. Re: [Elecraft] RTTY filter for K3
Bear with me on this KenIt's long but hopefully I can explain.: By the same tokenI can see no reason why the center frequency of DATA A and AFSK A should be different. Most advanced digital mode programs such as MixW have something similar to an Align macro. You tell the macro what you filter's center frequency is then whenever you click on that macro it instantly tunes your K3 so that the desired trace on your waterfall is exactly centered in the IF passband. You can then choose your most narrow filter and that signal will still be in the IF's center. I have a macro for the filter selection too so everything is really fast and easy. Here's how it works for me. 1. K3 filter set on very wide3+ KHZ. 2. See signal on waterfall. 3. Click on signal. 4. Begin to copy data on screen. 5. Signal is weak, QRM, need narrow filter. 6. Click on Align macro. Signal is now centered in passband. 7. Click on filter macro, choosing 200Hz filter. 8. QRM gone...Signal now easy to copy. Now this was all in DATA A mode. I use DATA A for PSK31, MFSK and anyother digital mode. So what if I want to operate RTTY? Well I can go ahead and do so in DATA A mode however that DUAL FIL feature will not activate. Is this a flaw? So I got to AFSK ANow DUAL FIL works but now my ALIGN macro won't work because my IF Center is different. It should not be1500 HZ should be the default. If I wanted to use 910 HZ and enjoy that low pitch sound, I would have to either change my Align macro or try to manually tune the RTTY signal which is terribly difficult, especially in a contest when transmissions last for only a few seconds. Re: [Elecraft] RTTY filter for K3
Ok Ken but that's with a BW of 150Hz, not too critical. Soon, I am told, Elecraft will activate the 50Hz filter so it can be used in Data mode. I suggested to Lyle that they change the default center fq. in AFSK to 1500 so it will match Data A then let the user change as desired. Then also allow use of the Dual PB feature in Data A. That should perfect things. Then I would not even bother using AFSK A. I am familiar with MixW... have used it for years and I see what you are talking about. But let me suggest the following... Go to AFSK A mode and set the mark frequency to 1445. That will give you a center frequency of 1530 which would put you within 30 Hz of your align frequency of 1500 Hz. If signal is still a l'il off, then use mouse to get it on or let the AFC move it on. I just tried it on a PSK signal with my filter cranked down as narrow as it would go in Data Mode and it hardly missed a beat decoding. 73, Ken K3IU n4lq wrote: Bear with me on this KenIt's long but hopefully I can explain.: By the same tokenI can see no reason why the center frequency of DATA A and AFSK A should be different. Not wanting to cut off the plug which fits into the back of the K3 I made up an adapter for my K2 using an inline stereo jack, an 8 pin mike plug and a 9 volt battery through a 5K resistor to power the mic. My K2 is wired for the Kenwood mics and I don't want to power the mic from the rig. I wired the grounds to the base of the plug, 9V DC through the 5K resistor to the middle and the mic positive to the tip. It works but my reports with the K2 have not been very good. I also made up an adapter for my Drake TR7 and reports on that rig are fine. Am I doing something wrong with the K2? I know little about electret mics and maybe I am using too much voltage or the wrong resistor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Now -- according to Elecraft support -- I have to source obsolete parts from China, buy drill equipment and copper bathroom pipe, and rip apart my television (or my computer) to cannibalize printed circuit boards. Either that or buy an oscilloscope that would cost me more than the K1. I'm building a 2 band K1 -- 40 meters (band 1) and 20 meters (band 2). During receiver alignment, Band 1 (40 meters) seems to be working fine. Band 2 (20 meters) however, does nothing. The support guys are telling me that I have to build an RF probe for further testing, and they've pointed me to a schematic in the K1 user manual and told me to go build the probe from scratch. That's about as useful to me as pointing me to the schematic of the K1 and telling me to go build the K1 from scratch. I'm a new ham (March, 2008). I'm not a home electronic hobbyist. I don't have test equipment. I have no experience at homebrew, nor do I have the knowledge to do so. I bought the K1 as a starter to get my feet wet in working electronics. After a number of emails with support about how to build an RF probe (a question that was repeatedly ignored), I was finally referred to a couple of different web sites: - The first site starts out with . using an old piece of double-sided printed circuit board that you have in your junk bin .. Where exactly do I have double-sided printed circuit board sitting around? Do I hacksaw off a hunk from my television or from my computer? Radio Shack doesn't sell it, nor does Mouser. - The next site also wants me to use double-sided printed circuit board, plus they want me to insert it into a copper pipe and drill holes through the pipe. Rght . so in other words I have to go out and buy a drill that's capable of drilling through copper. And I have to buy the copper pipe and end caps. Will I have to get the pipe threaded in order to mount the end caps? - Then there's the site that built the RF probe inside a ball-point pen. The author of that site admitted that it took him a number of tries before he was able to build it without breaking the diode, and that this is a project for the more advanced hobbyist. It also turns out that nobody carries the diode specified by the schematic (1N34A). According to Mouser, it's obsolete and out of stock, but if I want to pay a couple of hundred bucks, they'll gladly source it from China. Mouser will sell me something that they claim is a replacement for the 1N34A, but all of the web sites I've been referred to tell me not to use that specific replacement. I bought a kit because it comes with all the parts, has a pre-built chassis, has pre-drilled holes, and includes complete and well-thought out instructions on how to mount everything -- as well as a commitment to provide support during the construction process. Maybe in two or three years I'll have the experience to build my own RF probe, but in the meantime I'm stuck with a K1 that I can't finish without an RF probe, and there's no way that I can build an RF probe without a trip to China. Anybody want a mostly complete K1? Make me an offer -- I'll even throw in shipping. Can the Absolute S Meter function be set to ignore the RF Gain setting? It always takes the IF AGC control voltage into account. Re: [Elecraft] K3 BETA FIRMWARE RELEASE -- MCU rev 1.94
I have to agree that the CWT worked better under the old firmware but I think I'll put up with it until it's fixed rather than go back to an older version. I'm using the beta firmware now and notice less bouncing around of the CWT indicator but it still locks in on the wrong frequency unless you punch it multiple times. Steve Ellington [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Bob Cunnings [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: wayne burdick [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, May 12, 2008 10:53 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 BETA FIRMWARE RELEASE -- MCU rev 1.94 Unfortunately I see little improvement in the CW auto-spot feature, broken in the last release. It is still much less accurate than the original algorithm, and less consistent in it's behavior. Try this - tune in a good steady (S6 or S7) cw signal. Set tuning to FINE, enable CWT and then press SPOT repeatedly, observing the frequency display. The beta version (like 1.88) settles on a considerably different frequency almost every time - moving 5 Hz or more commonly, and sometimes as much as 20 Hz or more. There is a tendency to tune low. The original version, on the other hand, rarely moves more than 1 or 2 Hz with each auto-spot invocation, bearing out the fact that it is more accurate in general, or less likely to get confused (by noise, varying morse code speed etc.). Since I have two K3 units here, I set one up with 1.78/1.58 and the other with the beta firmware, and then compared their auto-spot behavior side by side on the same received signal using an antenna switch. The difference is quite pronounced. Here are some series of freqs (last three digits) resulting from 10 successive invocations of auto-spot on the same steady S7 signal on 40 meters (at 13 wpm or so, fortunately a long winded transmission): v178/158 (TEXT DEC threshold = AUTO) 125, 125, 125, 129, 130, 130, 127, 128, 129, 129 beta (TEXT DEC threshold = AUTO) 115, 118, 124, 079 (!), 106, 106, 124, 107, 112, 100 beta (TEXT DEC threshold = 5) 124, 123, 109, 116, 118, 122, 117, 116, 120, 123 The newer firmware version tends to bounce around more with a tendency to tune low, often requiring multiple invocations of auto-spot to hit the right pitch, whereas the original algorithm generally tunes right the first time. With threshold set to 5 in the beta version auto-spot is a bit better, but all too often it takes multiple tries to hit the right pitch, as it still tends low. If I set the threshold much higher, it doesn't want to tune at all for signals that the original algorithm handled easily. I'm not sure what the improvements to auto-spot introduced in 1.88 were supposed to do, but IMO the feature is still negatively affected by the attempt. A side by side comparison of the two versions, on the same signal, is very revealing in this case - can someone else try this? Too bad, since I use the feature a lot it's back to 1.78/1.58 for now. It just works. Re: [Elecraft] Computer Speakers
NopeAnd a Y connector doesn't work too well either. The low impedance speaker output of the K3 will swamp the computer's higher impedance output resulting in weak audio from the computer. A switching arrangement or some kind of mixer would work. Otherwise you will need separate speakers for your K3. I'm using a Logitech THX speaker system for both the PC and K3 and am manually switching between the sources. When I get my K3 is there a speaker connection on the K3 that will also output audio out from the computer such as when not using the radio but still using the computer? Or do I have to get a stereo Y connector at the line out connection on the K3? Many thanks in advanced. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - A complete BAND SWITCHING scheme using 33 memories
Don I was thinking of an application similar to Kenwood's ARCP-480 as part of the K3 Utility. ARCP-480 provides PC access to all menu settings in the TS-480, allowing such things as custom filter configuration and memory entry. Once you have it configured on your screen, you just dump it into the 480 and your're done. [Elecraft] K3 cheap mic
I have been testing a few mics today and several stations have gone out of their way to report how excellent this cheap headset sounds. In fact, one guy said it sounded better than a Heil PR40. I worked with a local ham to adjust the TX EQ. +3db of #5 and +6db of #6 were added and the CMP set at 18. I keep the headset plugged into the rear mic and headphone jack. In the menu, I set SPKR+PH to Yes. I'm using an amplified speaker system which has it's own volume control. When using the headset, I simply turn down the speake volume. I use a foot switch plugged into the PTT jack on the rear of the K3. Note that these also have an in-line volume and mute control. Very handy! Fw: [Elecraft] K3 no issues with output power on ssb!
Is the K3's wattmeter a peak reading type? If so, it only kicks up to about 50 watts until I increase the TXG VCE to 3 db which makes it double to 100 watts. So far, audio reports are good. Someone here reported distortion of some kind when doing this however. I really need a proper external peak reading meter to check this. Most of them I read about are not accurate. I might order the Palstar. It seems to have a good reputation. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ham vs general band changes
Yes it's a crazy way to change bands. I think the least that could be done is Once you are through snooping around the SW bands and you hit the BAND button, the K3 should go back to ham bands only and not screw up the band order. KM5Q posted a neat way to program the keypad for band changing. It's almost like having a normal keypad but requires an extra button push. Looks nice but a lot of labor to get all of that programmed. It would be cool if we could just send a 'memory' file to each other and load our radios. Maybe that can be added to the K3 Utility someday. Another way to ask the same question, if I want to go to 9.8 MHz, should I make sure I'm on the 30 meter band BEFORE entering the frequency? I seem to recall my K2 getting all mixed up if I was on one band and entered a frequency for another and am wondering if the K3 is the same. - Keith N1AS - - K3 711 - -Original Message- From: Dick Green WC1M The K3 manual says the Band switch scrolls through the ham bands. But if I enter a general coverage frequency, say 11.000, it becomes the setting of the nearest ham band. So, when I'm scrolling, I see 7.000, 11.000, 14.000, etc. I have to re-enter 10.100 to get 30m to the right setting. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Band switch
Well statedSoLet's go back to the rotary bandswitch. It was faster to change bands than bumping this button half dozen times. Nowadays a lot of hams have amplifiers, tuners and rotary beams that follow the bandswitching. Imagine what happens to all those relays and motors when quickly scrolling through each band. Steve Ellington [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Don Wilhelm [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, May 07, 2008 3:50 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Band switch Craig, I am not certain why you believe the current bandswitching method is confusing - unless you are trying to follow the several suggestions for changing the band selection. I find the BAND up/down switch similar to the old rotary bandswitches. You go one way (usually clockwise) to go to a higher band and the other way to go to a lower band. And you had to do it one switch detent at a time, there was no hopping from one band direct to another unless they were adjacent. One can easily count finger taps on the band button just as easily as counting rotary switch detent positions - one just has to remember how many bands apart the present one is from the desired one. Just my opinion. 73, Don W3FPR Craig D. Smith wrote: To me, at least, the present situation is rather confusing.
