I received a KUSB from Elecraft today. I am trying to download the driver from the FTDI website. The Windows x86 32 bit version will not download. I am getting a network error. Re: [Elecraft] K-Line Addition - DC Power Supply (Suggestion)
I for one would like to see Elecraft produce a power supply optimized for the K3 and matching Elecraft accessories. For years I owned a Kenwood PS-50 power supply and regretted selling it a few years ago. It was rock solid and absolutely quite and yet matched my TS850S. I currently own two Astron RS-35 power supplies, but they do not have the fit and finish of the Kenwood. Any yes, both of mine have a small but noticeable amount of hum. The Kenwood PS-50 fit in an enclosure that is just slightly larger than the P3. I am sure that Elecraft would ensure top notch rf filtering, light weight and with plenty of auxilliary outputs for running various Elecraft devices including the KRC2, P3 and KAT500. No need for meters on the supply itself, I have measurement stuff above the tabletop. I use an Astron 35 linear at the operating position and have an Astron SS-30 switcher at the workbench (along with several other lower current supplies). There are no 13.8 volt power supplies above the desktop - If I need other voltages, yes, I do have a +/- 15 volt supply along with +5V on the workbench along with a variable voltage positive supply for special needs - but I don't think those are relevant for powering the K2, K3, or KX3. Bottom line, power supplies are on the floor out of the way and treated just as an energy source. So, my answer to your question is NO. The RigRunner does sit on the desktop with fuses to match the wire sizes exiting from it. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] DX4WIN
David, DX4WIN works great with the K3. I use the K3 X4 file. I did have to make a couple of small changes to the rig file. You make those changes in DX4WIN. One small change keeps the K3 in CW Reverse mode (if desired). The other change corrects an incorrect command that reverses the filter settings between VFOs A and B. Finally, you have to make sure that you have VFO OFS set correctly within the K3 itself. These three small changes will make the K3 operate smoothly with DX4WIN. I can send you details on all three if you need them. Just email me direct. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - panadapter or subreceiver
Robert, I have both the subRX and the panadapter, and I love and use both a lot. But if I had to choose between one or the other, I would definitely recommend the P3. I use the P3 all the time -- it is a revolutionary new way to interface with the radio. I just used it a moment ago to break a huge pile up trying to work 1A0C on 20M RTTY. I also use the panadaptor to view band openings and gage the general acitivity on the bands. When tunring the K3, I hardly ever look at the frequency readout anymore. I instead look at the P3 and move from one signal to another much faster. I do use the subRX, especially when I have to go split in a big pileup. But I don't use it nearly as much as the P3. I orginally bought my K3 without the subRX and was very comfortable going split with two VFOs. When I added the subRX, I quickly learned how to use it to listen and tune through a pile to find the station being worked or a gap in the pileup as a whole. But once I got the panadaptor, I don't have to listen on the sub RX nearly as much. The panadaptor allows me to see the pileup and move my VFO B frequency visually and much more quickly. So if I had to choose, I would vote for the P3. But the real answer is the two in combination are lights out! One final thought: if you are going to order your K3 factory built, it might make more sense to buy the subRX. It is a bit involved adding the subRX after the fact. It is super easy to add the P3 at any time. If you already have a K3, then it is a lot easier to add the P3. Eventually, you will want to have both. Dave, N4QS - Original Message - From: Robert G. Re: [Elecraft] RCS-12 or Station Master for K3?
Ignacy, I ordered and attempted to install the RCS-12 last summer. It did not interface well with the K3/KPA500. I was going to have to build an interface box to get it work with the K3. I also had problems with the type of socket they were using for connecting the cable going to my remote switch. Only five of eight positions worked at all, and they were intermittent creating open circuits which weres causing my KPA500 solid state amp to suddenly see very high SWR while transmitting. After a month of trial and error and two replacement cable connectors from Ameritron, I asked for my money back and to their credit they let me ship the unit back for a full refund. So I would not recommend the RCS-12 based on my personal experience. I have not used or tried any Microham products. But I just recently purchased the Elecraft KRC2 automatic band decoder. This is a very high quality product and it was very easy to wire for my remote RC8S switch. It interfaces very nicely to the K3/KPA500 when I use a Y cable coming out of the Auxilliary Port on the K3. The Y cable splits in two -- one cable goes to the KPA500 amp and the other connects to the KRC2. The KRC2 follows the K3 automatically and switches between four antennas. It works really well and I would highly recommend it. It even works on 6 meters. Very simple but one needs to use tricks to use two relay boxes. 2. Microham Station Master. Much more elaborate but more complicated, relying on computer, and needs additional relay boxes. I don't consider the ELecraft box because its software has neither the simplicity of RCS-12 nor the flexibility of Station Master. Only firmware problems. Looking for experiences, not opinions. I prefer the small box that is possible to take on a DXpedition or to Field Day and just endure the horrible pain of changing the coax when you change bands. The main thing that discourages me from buying an eight pack from Array is that I don't have enough antennas to keep it from being lonesome. It seems logical to me that the KPA500 would have two (output) as well. But it doesn't. I would like to see the KAT500 have two antenna ports (unbalanced) to make up for this. Running the 6m output to another coax makes sense--most (all?) band decoders and relay boxes don't handle 6m, and the lack of a second output port on the KPA500 makes it difficult to manage the 6m capability of the K3 cleanly. The KRC2 will handle the band data, but does not have a compatible relay box, manual operation, or lights to tell you what it is doing. Right now my K3 sends HF to ANT1, that goes to an HF amp and to a TopTen band decoder and relay box. Six meters goes to ANT2 and a separate 6m amp and 6m antenna. This gives me fully auto bandswitching on HF and 6m, save for 60m where the TopTen decoder does not recognize as a valid address. With my already ordered KPA500 (selling both tube amps), I will have to manually switch 6m. I don't like this not because I am lazy, but the older I get the more stoopid I get and its just a matter of time before I tx into a near-infinite SWR. Knowing me, I'll do

The old Wiki site was run by one guy as a volunteer. He was somewhat proprietary with how it was run as I recall. I think Alexander and I are suggesting that Elecraft would have to support and administer the site while also accepting input from users. It does not have to be on Wiki. It could be supported directly from the Elecraft website or some other online resource. Again, check out the fine online resources at the N1MM website as an example. I agree that the signal doesn't pop out anymore with 4.22, but I think it is due to the change to 5 Hz tuning. It is harder to hear the peak in the signal with the 5 Hz steps in the Shift tuning. Re: [Elecraft] K3 MCU 4.17 (APF beta) kills SSB output?
I am seeing the same reduction in SSB output power. I installed 4.17 Beta last night. It appears that the reduced power only occurs when I have APF activated. I have twice restored SSB power by doing the following: 1). Changing mode back to CW, 2). Going to Dual PB in Config menu and turning APF off, 3). exiting Config menu, 4). changing mode back to SSB. Power is restored back to a full 100 watts. With APF set to on, SSB power is reduced to about 70 watts. I confirmed this on 17M by repeating the process twice, and I then tried 20 M SSB and the power was back to 70 watts (after I had turned APF back on.) Is this a problem with the beta release? I saw Wayne's suggestion to do a TX gain calibration, but it seems strange that I would only need to do this after installing Beta 4.17. APF works great, but I need to resolve this SSB power issue. But I could not get the output power to change much and after several tries I got a high current reading. Now I can get audio only out of the left side of headphones and when I attempt to reselect the WTMR parameter it is no longer there. The selection in Config skips from VFO OFS to XVn ON. Friends attending the Ten Tec hamfest this weekend sent me photos of the new Ten Tec Eagle transceiver. Looks very much like a K3. Re: [Elecraft] K3 DX4Win
Ken, I use DX4WIN with my K3 and I notice the same issue. I do not use PSK31 very often and when I do I have the change the mode manually within DX4WIN. This is more than likely a DX4WIN issue with the rig control file for the K3. The software is probably not recognizing the Data A or Data D modes on the K3 and by default assigns RTTY. N1MM contest software provides a way to map the modes in the Configurator. I would think some modification of the rig control file for the K3 is needed in DX4WIN. I would refer this to the DX4WIN reflector. [Elecraft] P3 clicking sound
To all, Received my P3 last week and love it. Just one small issue. There is a very soft but noticeable clicking sound when I am using the P3/K3 on the low bands -- 80 and 160M. The click repeats itself about every 7 or 8 seconds. Sounds like a relay within the P3. I only hear it on those two bands. Does anyone know what this is and/or how to stop it. Re: [Elecraft] CM500 Headset for Sale
To all, The CM500 headset has been sold to W6NIA the first responder. Thanks for all of the interest. BTW, several have asked why I was selling the headset. I bought it thinking that it would replace my old Heil BM-10 headset. In comparing both with the K3, I found that I still preferred the Heil with the HC5 element. The Heil seems to respond better to my voice and was easier to configure for Vox Gain, Anti-Vox. etc. Since there was no overwhelming improvement in the Yamaha versus the Heil, I thought I would stick with the tried and true. Plus the BM-10 is very comfortable to wear if you do not have to block out outside noise--which I don't in my shack. I think the Yamaha is still a very good value especially if you do not already have a headset. [Elecraft] New problem switching frequencies and modes with K3 FW 4.05
My K3 (SN 3132) has been working happily in sync with DX4WIN and N1MM for over a year now. Normally, when I double click on a spot within the DX spot window of DX4WIN, the K3 immediately changes to the correct spot frequency and mode. Same goes with N1MM. Just a few days ago I noticed that the K3 is not always changing to the correct frequency. The problem appears to occur when a spot causes a change in both frequency and mode. For example, if VFO A is set on 14.008.00 CW-R and I see a SSB spot for 14200.00, when I double click on the spot, the K3 changes to 14.199.42 instead of 14.200.00. Then if I click on a spot to go back to 14.008.00 the K3 changes to 14.008.58. In both instances I have to double click on the spot a second time to get it to change to the correct frequency. Note that the difference is +/- 0.58 kHz. The problem also occurs when switching from SSB to RTTY. It also seems to be occurring using both normal CW and CW-R. Last week I loaded the new 4.05 firmware. I am now wondering is this is a problem with the firmware. Or have I somehow changed a setting? The K3 worked perfectly for over a year. Something has changed. Any help would be appreciated. I'm in the latter camp. I hate fan noise and I can clearly hear the fans on my K3 even at the lowest speed. I recognize that people's perception of noise depends on many things: other ambient noise in the environment, personal hearing acuity, how the equipment is placed on the desk, what kind of surface is immediately behind it, etc. etc. However, I'm also wondering if Elecraft has changed brands or models of fans from time to time. It's possible that some brands/models might be quieter than others. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Speaker/headphone problem
Tony, Same thing happened to me when I plugged my Kenwood mono speaker into the stereo speaker jack on the back of the K3. I did this without thinking from the front of the radio when I was rearranging equipment in the shack. The speaker worked for a couple of days until the audio output transistor failed. I could then only hear audio from the headphones. I had to send my K3 back to Elecraft in order to replace the audio output transistor. It was under warranty so they repaired it for free. While the rig was in the shop, I had them add the sub RX, digital voice recorder, and the IF Out interface. So they came out okay on the deal. But I learned my lesson -- do not plug a mono speaker into the stereo receptacle. It is clearly labeled as Stereo on the back, but you have to be looking at it from that direction! Even the manual shows it as stereo.
