[Elecraft] Cannot download driver for KUSB

2012-12-26 Thread Dave Perry, N4QS
I received a KUSB from Elecraft today. I am trying to download the driver
from the FTDI website. The Windows x86 32 bit version will not download. I
am getting a network error. It is only a 1,322 KB file. Can I get the
driver anywhere else?

Thank you.

I use a G450A with my steppir three element and it works great. I purchased

Re: [Elecraft] K-Line Addition - DC Power Supply (Suggestion)

2012-09-18 Thread N4QS
I for one would like to see Elecraft produce a power supply optimized for
the K3 and matching Elecraft accessories. For years I owned a Kenwood PS-50
power supply and regretted selling it a few years ago. It was rock solid
and absolutely quite and yet matched my TS850S. I currently own two Astron
RS-35 power supplies, but they do not have the fit and finish of the
Kenwood. Any yes, both of mine have a small but noticeable amount of hum.
The Kenwood PS-50 fit in an enclosure that is just slightly larger than the
P3. I am sure that Elecraft would ensure top notch rf filtering, light
weight and with plenty of auxilliary outputs for running various Elecraft
devices including the KRC2, P3 and KAT500.

See this link: http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/hamps/ps50.html

I do not think it is in the best interests of Elecraft to attempt a
power supply design given that it would require UL compliance
certification (as well as other countries certification) which can be
an expensive process for a power supply that would likely have a
volume of less than 10,000 units even at product life end.

*IF* Elecraft were to produce a power supply, the most economical
solution would be to use a modular OEM switchers that already has UL,
CE, CSA, etc. certifications and wrap it in an Elecraft case with IEC
cord, additional filtering, external power switch, and maybe metering.
OEM supplies - available in many quality levels, form factors and price
points - are used by several other manufacturers as the core of their
matching (or internal) power supply offerings.

several other lower current supplies). There are no 13.8 volt power
supplies above the desktop - If I need other voltages, yes, I do have a
+/- 15 volt supply along with +5V on the workbench along with a variable
voltage positive supply for special needs - but I don't think those are
relevant for powering the K2, K3, or KX3.

Bottom line, power supplies are on the floor out of the way and treated
 just as an energy source.

So, my answer to your question is NO. The RigRunner does sit on the
desktop with fuses to match the wire sizes exiting from it.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] DX4WIN

2012-09-06 Thread N4QS
David,

DX4WIN works great with the K3. I use the K3 X4 file. I did have to make a
couple of small changes to the rig file. You make those changes in DX4WIN.
One small change keeps the K3 in CW Reverse mode (if desired). The other
change corrects an incorrect command that reverses the filter settings
between VFOs A and B. Finally, you have to make sure that you have VFO OFS
set correctly within the K3 itself.

These three small changes will make the K3 operate smoothly with DX4WIN. I
can send you details on all three if you need them. Just email me direct.

I just bought the PR6 and added it to my K3 last week. I just connected it to

but I would probably remove it when transporting the rig. Makes a huge

I'd like to buy a PR6 and see in its manual a photo of it apparently hanging off
the back of the K3. Would the torque be unhealthy for the K3 connectors over

ok to connect via cables or is it necessary to minimize path length as shown?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - panadapter or subreceiver

2012-07-02 Thread N4QS
Robert,

I have both the subRX and the panadapter, and I love and use both a lot.
But if I had to choose between one or the other, I would definitely
recommend the P3. I use the P3 all the time -- it is a revolutionary new
way to interface with the radio. I just used it a moment ago to break a
huge pile up trying to work 1A0C on 20M RTTY. I also use the panadaptor to
view band openings and gage the general acitivity on the bands. When
tunring the K3, I hardly ever look at the frequency readout anymore. I
instead look at the P3 and move from one signal to another much faster.

I do use the subRX, especially when I have to go split in a big pileup. But
I don't use it nearly as much as the P3. I orginally bought my K3 without
the subRX and was very comfortable going split with two VFOs. When I added
the subRX, I quickly learned how to use it to listen and tune through a pile
to find the station being worked or a gap in the pileup as a whole. But
once I got the panadaptor, I don't have to listen on the sub RX nearly as
much. The panadaptor allows me to see the pileup and move my VFO B
frequency visually and much more quickly.

So if I had to choose, I would vote for the P3. But the real answer is the
two in combination are lights out! One final thought: if you are going to
order your K3 factory built, it might make more sense to buy the subRX. It
is a bit involved adding the subRX after the fact. It is super easy to add
the P3 at any time. If you already have a K3, then it is a lot easier to
add the P3. Eventually, you will want to have both.

contests [less so in the past, more in the future]. I have a small
pistol station with no allusions of being a band master. Question:
which of these two options might I find more useful for my station and

Re: [Elecraft] RCS-12 or Station Master for K3?

2012-05-20 Thread N4QS
Ignacy,

I ordered and attempted to install the RCS-12 last summer. It did not
interface well with the K3/KPA500. I was going to have to build an
interface box to get it work with the K3. I also had problems with the type
of socket they were using for connecting the cable going to my remote
switch. Only five of eight positions worked at all, and they were
intermittent creating open circuits which weres causing my KPA500 solid
state amp to suddenly see very high SWR while transmitting. After a month
of trial and error and two replacement cable connectors from Ameritron, I
asked for my money back and to their credit they let me ship the unit back
for a full refund. So I would not recommend the RCS-12 based on my personal
experience.

I have not used or tried any Microham products. But I just recently
purchased the Elecraft KRC2 automatic band decoder. This is a very high
quality product and it was very easy to wire for my remote RC8S switch. It
interfaces very nicely to the K3/KPA500 when I use a Y cable coming out of
the Auxilliary Port on the K3. The Y cable splits in two -- one cable goes
to the KPA500 amp and the other connects to the KRC2. The KRC2 follows the
K3 automatically and switches between four antennas. It works really well
and I would highly recommend it. It even works on 6 meters.

I have a few switches and would like to automate band changes. There are
two
 choices:
 1. Ameritron RCS-12. About $320 with the relay box. Very simple but one
needs to use tricks to use two relay boxes.
 2. Microham Station Master. Much more elaborate but more complicated,
relying on computer, and needs additional relay boxes.

I don't consider the ELecraft box because its software has neither the
simplicity of RCS-12 nor the flexibility of Station Master. Only firmware
 problems.

 Looking for experiences, not opinions.

[Elecraft] RTTY Keying problem

2012-05-06 Thread N4QS
To all,

I had a computer crash yesterday and have spent the weekend reinstalling ham
radio software and interfaces on a replacement pc. I almost have everything
working except that I still can't get DX4WIN to key the K3 in RTTY AFSK A mode.

I use MMTTY and DX4WIN. Maybe someone can help refresh my memory. I have the
K3 Data Mode set at AFSK A. I have always used AFSK A with the K3. The K3
PTT-Key setup in Configurator is set as DTR - RTS. If I run MMTTY outside of
DX4WIN, under MMTTY Setup, TX tab, I have PTT FSK port set at None. If I go
into DX4WIN and bring up the RTTY window and then do an Alt-S, I show MMTTY
Keying setup as Vox and key line set as DTR. I am using Com1 for radio control
between the pc and K3.

I can receive fine, but just cannot key the K3. I wonder how you are setup?
It was working perfectly until the crash!

I have Data mode A enabled and ALC set to 4 bars solid with the 5th
flickering. Power output is set to 40W. Monitored IMD is good (-29 to-30)
using KK7UQ device for off-air monitoring - the signal is otherwise clean.

I have checked and can confirm that the clicking/popping is independent of:
Line in Gain/soundcard audio drive settings; data mode used
(PSK31/RTTY/Olivia - all are affected); digimode software application used
(same with Fldigi, Airlink Express, digipan and HRD) and finally, I have USB
soundcard dongles of 2 different manufacturers and the problem is present
using both.

Any ideas or advice gratefully received. I'd like to get rid of this TX
clicking!

73 and thanks in advance,

John

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500 Ports

2011-07-12 Thread n4qs
I have four antennas but use a remote antenna switch at the tower. This allows
me to have one 300' run of heliax into the shack. So I only need one antenna
output at present.

If you already have three or more coax runs coming into the shack, check out
the antenna switch from Top Ten Devices or similar products from other
manufacturers. They even offer a band decoder that will automatically switch
to the correct antenna -- as do others.

What you do need is an Elecraft Wiki where you can leverage the

type (Joomla, Wiki, Knowledge-base, etc.) would not only provide a
forum in which Elecraft could write more in-depth articles about
various popular topics but also be self-updating to some extent.
Users of Elecraft products would help in managing, updating, and

certain types of content, but it seems to me a no brain-er that a lot
of the information disseminated on the this mailing list should be

The old Wiki site was run by one guy as a volunteer. He was somewhat
proprietary with how it was run as I recall. I think Alexander and I are
suggesting that Elecraft would have to support and administer the site while
also accepting input from users. It does not have to be on Wiki. It could be
supported directly from the Elecraft website or some other online resource.

Again, check out the fine online resources at the N1MM website as an example.
You could supplement online text and photos with embedded instruction videos to
help beginners and experts learn and master new features and functions.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 MCU 4.17 (APF beta) kills SSB output?

2010-11-04 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
I am seeing the same reduction in SSB output power. I installed 4.17 Beta
last night. It appears that the reduced power only occurs when I have APF
activated. I have twice restored SSB power by doing the following: 1).
Changing mode back to CW, 2). Going to Dual PB in Config menu and turning
APF off, 3). exiting Config menu, 4). changing mode back to SSB. Power is
restored back to a full 100 watts. With APF set to on, SSB power is reduced
to about 70 watts. I confirmed this on 17M by repeating the process twice,
and I then tried 20 M SSB and the power was back to 70 watts (after I had
turned APF back on.) Is this a problem with the beta release? I saw
Wayne's suggestion to do a TX gain calibration, but it seems strange that I
would only need to do this after installing Beta 4.17.

APF works great, but I need to resolve this SSB power issue. I may try RTTY
next to see what happens in that mode.

James Rogers suggested turning the Mic gain to 0 and then back up and he
was getting good output. After I did that, I could only get about 25
Watts peak on both meters. I switched to CW mode, transmitted a short
carrier which showed 100 Watts on both meters (power control set to
100). Switching back to SSB both meters showed about 70 Watts. I have
since bumped TXG VCE up to the max, 3.0 dB and am getting about 90 Watts
peak on each meter (I say four in a normal voice to get the K3's
meter to stabilize for a bit). I had previously had TXG VCE set to 1.0
 dB.

I'm not sure that rolling back to the last stable firmware would solve
this or be fraught with other issues. Generally, roll-backs don't work
all that well in other devices.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 MCU 4.17 (APF beta) kills SSB output?

2010-11-04 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
Now I seem to have a real problem. I did a TX Gain calibration using the K3
Utility for both 5 and 50 watts. I worked perfectly and tx gain appeared to
be right on all bands. I then did some testing into a dummy load with RTTY.
I noticed that power would start out at 25 watts and it would take several
transmissions to get it up to 70 to 100 watts. So I decided to do a
wattmeter calibration. I had selected WMTR LP and was attempting to do the
5.0 W calibration into a dummy load. But I could not get the output power
to change much and after several tries I got a high current reading. Now I
can get audio only out of the left side of headphones and when I attempt to
reselect the WTMR parameter it is no longer there. The selection in Config
skips from VFO OFS to XVn ON. I assume I have blown something out.
However, I am considering reverting back to MCU version 4.14. Any other
suggestions?

Thanks in advance. I would hate to see the K3 go down right before the SS
CW weekend.

 RTTY.
Now I
can get audio only out of the left side of headphones and when I attempt
 to
reselect the WTMR parameter it is no longer there. The selection in Config
skips from VFO OFS to XVn ON. I assume I have blown something out.
However, I am considering reverting back to MCU version 4.14. Any other

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 MCU 4.17 (APF beta) kills SSB output?

I am seeing the same reduction in SSB output power. I installed 4.17 Beta
last night. It appears that the reduced power only occurs when I have APF
activated. I have twice restored SSB power by doing the following: 1).
Changing mode back to CW, 2). Going to Dual PB in Config menu and turning
APF off, 3). exiting Config menu, 4). changing mode back to SSB. Power is
restored back to a full 100 watts. With APF set to on, SSB power is
 reduced
to about 70 watts. I confirmed this on 17M by repeating the process
 twice,
and I then tried 20 M SSB and the power was back to 70 watts (after I had
turned APF back on.) Is this a problem with the beta release? I saw
Wayne's suggestion to do a TX gain calibration, but it seems strange that
 I
would only need to do this after installing Beta 4.17.

APF works great, but I need to resolve this SSB power issue. I may try
 RTTY
next to see what happens in that mode.

Re: [Elecraft] RIT?

2010-09-30 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
Tommy,

I tried my RIT and I agree that the VFO A frequency appears to move as you
turn the RIT knob. But if you transmit, the VFO A frequency reverts back to
the original frequency. I suppose it might be better to keep the VFO A
frequency the same and only show the offset +/- setting for RIT in the VFO B
display. That might be less confusing. I never noticed the issue until you
pointed it out.

Ken,

I use DX4WIN with my K3 and I notice the same issue. I do not use PSK31
very often and when I do I have the change the mode manually within DX4WIN.
This is more than likely a DX4WIN issue with the rig control file for the
K3. The software is probably not recognizing the Data A or Data D modes on
the K3 and by default assigns RTTY. N1MM contest software provides a way to
map the modes in the Configurator. I would think some modification of the
rig control file for the K3 is needed in DX4WIN. I would refer this to the
DX4WIN reflector.

[Elecraft] P3 clicking sound

2010-09-06 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
To all,

Received my P3 last week and love it. Just one small issue. There is a very
soft but noticeable clicking sound when I am using the P3/K3 on the low bands

like a relay within the P3. I only hear it on those two bands. Does anyone
know what this is and/or how to stop it.

Re: [Elecraft] CM500 Headset for Sale

2010-09-06 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
To all,

The CM500 headset has been sold to W6NIA the first responder. Thanks for
all of the interest.

BTW, several have asked why I was selling the headset. I bought it thinking
that it would replace my old Heil BM-10 headset. In comparing both with the
K3, I found that I still preferred the Heil with the HC5 element. The Heil
seems to respond better to my voice and was easier to configure for Vox
Gain, Anti-Vox. etc. Since there was no overwhelming improvement in the
Yamaha versus the Heil, I thought I would stick with the tried and true.
Plus the BM-10 is very comfortable to wear if you do not have to block out
outside noise--which I don't in my shack. I think the Yamaha is still a
very good value especially if you do not already have a headset.

[Elecraft] New problem switching frequencies and modes with K3 FW 4.05

2010-09-01 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
My K3 (SN 3132) has been working happily in sync with DX4WIN and N1MM for over
a year now. Normally, when I double click on a spot within the DX spot window
of DX4WIN, the K3 immediately changes to the correct spot frequency and mode.
Same goes with N1MM.

Just a few days ago I noticed that the K3 is not always changing to the correct
frequency. The problem appears to occur when a spot causes a change in both
frequency and mode. For example, if VFO A is set on 14.008.00 CW-R and I see a
SSB spot for 14200.00, when I double click on the spot, the K3 changes to
14.199.42 instead of 14.200.00. Then if I click on a spot to go back to
14.008.00 the K3 changes to 14.008.58. In both instances I have to double
click on the spot a second time to get it to change to the correct frequency.
Note that the difference is +/- 0.58 kHz. The problem also occurs when
switching from SSB to RTTY. It also seems to be occurring using both normal CW
and CW-R.

Last week I loaded the new 4.05 firmware. I am now wondering is this is a
problem with the firmware. Or have I somehow changed a setting? The K3 worked
perfectly for over a year. Something has changed. Any help would be
appreciated.

Brian,

Your suggestion was right on the mark. I must have accidently tapped option
5 under CW Weight. I now remember briefly looking at that setting when it
was mentioned by someone last week on the reflector. All I had to do was
tap 5 to set it back to VFO NOR. Thanks to everyone for your great
responses. I really appreciate it.

BTW, I received my P3 two days ago. All I can say is that it is one nice
piece of engineering. Just another addition to the growing Elecraft legend!
When can I order the KPA500?

I believe this problem is caused by setting the CW WGHT option 5 to VFO
OFS. Try setting it to VFO NOR and see if the problem goes away.

I seem to recall having had problems like you are now experiencing when
this option was introduced many versions ago.

I may be way off base here but I am curious...Has anyone ever tried using a
y cord to hook two sets of paddles up to the K3?? or would they interfere
with each other?? I think it would be cheaper than making a switch box???

Re: [Elecraft] KDVR

2010-06-01 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
After reading this thread throughout the day, I was inspired to setup N1MM
to use the DVR in the K3. By following the simple steps outlined in the
page link below by N6ML, it took only a few minutes to add the macros within
N1MM and make the recordings in the K3. Works great! Can't wait to try it
in a phone contest.

Here's a posting from March on using the KDVR with N1MM.

I've used the macros in DXLab Commander successfully using the suggested
 syntax.

 I used CATA1ASC and CATA2ASC for a possible SO2R solution that I've never
really tested fully. CATA1ASC should have the same effect as CAT1ASC in a
 SO1V-type scenario.

won't work in this ARRL SSB DX contest. The entry in N1MM for those keys

been memorized in N1MM for SSB:

  *F1 CQ,{CATA1ASC K31;SWT21;}

  *F2 Exch,{CATA1ASC K31;SWT31;}

  *F3 Thanks!,{CATA1ASC K31;SWT35;}

  *F4 {MYCALL},{CATA1ASC K31;SWT39;}

I can't understand why they won't work now, when they did before. I can
punch the M1-M4 buttons on the K-3 and they work fine. I've tried all the
settings I can imagine in both N1MM and PTT-key in the K-3.

If you are using this scheme, please tell me your magic combination of
 settings in N1MM and K-3 Config PTT-KEY

Fan noise on my K3 is very slight. Not a problem here.

The topic of K3 fan noise seems to come up every now and then, and
each time it does there's a chorus of people who say the fans in their
K3 are absolutely silent, and an equal chorus of people who say the
 fans are clearly audible.

I'm in the latter camp. I hate fan noise and I can clearly hear the
fans on my K3 even at the lowest speed.

I recognize that people's perception of noise depends on many things:
other ambient noise in the environment, personal hearing acuity, how
the equipment is placed on the desk, what kind of surface is
 immediately behind it, etc. etc.

However, I'm also wondering if Elecraft has changed brands or models
of fans from time to time. It's possible that some brands/models
 might be quieter than others.

The fans in my K3 are made by UTEC and have model numbers of

 AT6015L-12L2B-ND2 and same prefix-ND5

I would be interested in hearing from others who care to check the
brand and model # of their fans, and whether you perceive them to be
 quiet or not.

It's probably best if we don't clutter the list with fan brands and
models, so please reply to me directly and I'll post a summary of my
 findings in a few days.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 Question

2010-04-23 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
Eric,

Will the KPA-500 provide a capability for automatic band switching between
multiple antennas? If not, will it provide output for 3rd party devices
such as the microham StationMaster or some other band decoder/remote antenna
switch combination? I would like to find a way to ensure that my K3,
KPA-500 and a remote antenna switch are always in sync as to the proper
band. I currently use DX4WIN and N1MM for most logging functions. I have
already ordered my P3. Now waiting on the KPA-500!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Speaker/headphone problem

2010-01-03 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
Tony,

Same thing happened to me when I plugged my Kenwood mono speaker into the
stereo speaker jack on the back of the K3. I did this without thinking from
the front of the radio when I was rearranging equipment in the shack. The
speaker worked for a couple of days until the audio output transistor
failed. I could then only hear audio from the headphones. I had to send my
K3 back to Elecraft in order to replace the audio output transistor. It was
under warranty so they repaired it for free. While the rig was in the shop,
I had them add the sub RX, digital voice recorder, and the IF Out interface.
So they came out okay on the deal.

But I learned my lesson -- do not plug a mono speaker into the stereo
receptacle. It is clearly labeled as Stereo on the back, but you have to be
looking at it from that direction! Even the manual shows it as stereo.

Maybe someone has had this problem before and can save me time
 troubleshooting?

Everything was fine yesterday. This morning (rig is always ON) headphones
work fine. But nothing out of either internal or external speaker when I
unplugged the headphones. I now have to turn Config: SPKR + PH to YES to
listen out of either an external or internal speaker. But now I can't turn
off the speakers when plugging in the headphones.

Any ideas what could have happened?

 Tnx for any feedback.
