[Elecraft] KE7X Website is back

2021-06-12 Thread Vic DiCiccio
Several months ago there was a thread about Fred Cady KE7X's website,
which has information about his Elecraft books, some updates, and other
thoughts.  Although his KE7X domain is gone, the website and all the
content can be found here:

https://sites.google.com/a/ke7x.com/www/

This site is on the original Google Sites system, which is slated for
decommission on January 1, 2022, so please download any information you
may want beyond that date.  I'll try to create some new version if it
can be done easily.

If you can download the website, or get a copy, it is fairly simple (but
somewhat time consuming to verify the links) to set it up as an archived site
accessible from a DVD or thumb drive. With permission from the family it could
be sold or offered as a resource the same as Fred’s books. No one needs to pay
to host the site. Just my humble opinion.

Ted,

You might want to contact the folks who preserved the website of Tom
Hammond N0SS (SK) for information.

It is preserved as a subpage on the MMARC website.
Jim Biggerstaff the_biggersta...@embarqmail.com is the major contact.

Thanks Scott, I have a Linux laptop that I can give-it-a-go. At least
I'll make myself a personal copy of the site, then figure out the
copyright implications and get approval before doing anything to be
respectful.

Too bad we can't just throw a few bucks to spin up the domain
again...darn internet pirates always want money lol.

Guys, what needs to be done? If the information is still on the servers
and all that is needed is money to host it and domain fees, let's start a

[Elecraft] KE7X Website

2021-01-06 Thread edauer
Hello Tony -

I don't know how much I could do towards re-establishing Fred Cady's
website, but I would certainly support such a project and would help if I
can. Fred was a friend, as he was to many of us. He had family in Denver,
where I live, and visited often. We got together whenever our calendars
both allowed. Fred and I and Gus, KB0YH, had lunch together, and spoke with
him after his health took the turn, just days before he passed away, here in
Denver. I was one of his assistants - more accurately, one of his students
- in doing the book on macro programming. Working with him was more than a
pleasure.

The best person to contact, I suggest, would be Vic, VE3YT. Vic was a close
friend of Fred's and co-author on more than one of his books.

Revitalizing his website would be a benefit to the entire Elecraft community
and a fitting memorial to Fred.

I would be happy to host it on my AccuWeb server in Denver with the
understanding that IF the traffic, et al. causes me to have to spend
TONS of money, I will need to find a way t make it pay for itself
or "beg" for donations.
It's a SUPER fast and almost completely unpopulated server with 4 full
cores, lots o RAM, and SSD storage...

I LOVE ALL my Cady books.  Wish I could have met him while he was here.

Sadly, unless someone in his family still has his PERSONAL machine and
access to it, OR made a download of the site BEFORE it expired, it is
almost 100% that the data disappeared into the ether when they pulled
the plug... (wiped it).
MIGHT be able to recover a substantial portion of it from the WayBack
Machine.  That's how I got all the Sommer website, before someone else
found an archive and put it back up...   (Sommer's family trashed ALL of
his notes, records, drawings, et al so they say  I spoke with
one of his heirs.  I was going to take out a $500k loan to put the -808,
et al. back in production.

I just received a Lulu.com printed copy of "The Elecraft K3 and P3 -

an awesome reference.

Would there be any interest in re-hydrating his website if we have a

Agreed. Since it's available on the "internet wayback machine" (thanks
Dave), at least we all can find what was originally published.

I'm running a wget process with some flags to make a copy for myself.

Sometimes trying to get the original web domain transferred is more
expensive and not worth the trouble with whomever he was using (the
website was hosted out of Germany per netcraft.com). Then there's the IP
concerns and family wishes if any.

All great information, glad it's still available via archives at least.
I found it in early December right before it disappeared when I went to
go look up something.

I now have both the paper K3 and PDF K3S books to enjoy for a while :)
Don't mind spending around $35-40 each for a quality manual that I can
read offline.

Maybe this isn't new news but the KE7X.com website that is a treasure
trove of Elecraft information seems to be expired and "parked" -- not
accessible. Being new to Elecraft, I just learned Fred became an SK in
May of 2019.

I just received a Lulu.com printed copy of "The Elecraft K3 and P3 -
Third Edition" book for my new-to-me K3 that I bought recently, it's an
awesome reference.

Would there be any interest in re-hydrating his website if we have a way
to get the files/data? I would certainly be willing to sponsor it and
buy the domain/host in the cloud to keep it going since it is well known
and in various print references.

Thanks,

Tony, KX3H

I agree. Freds manuals are a God Send and wakes one up to really what the
Elecraft rigs can do. He also put out a great book on the skills of ham radio,
“The Successful Ham Radio Operators Handbook” or something like that. See

http://www.ke7x.com/

I found it invaluable.

I am very saddened to report the death of my long time friend Frederick
Cady, KE7X. Many of you know Fred from his series of excellent manuals
written for Elecraft products. Fred passed away yesterday evening from
heart failure. He is survived by this wife Katie and daughter Elizabeth.

I am very saddened to report the death of my long time friend Frederick
Cady, KE7X. Many of you know Fred from his series of excellent manuals
written for Elecraft products. Fred passed away yesterday evening from
heart failure. He is survived by this wife Katie and daughter Elizabeth.

2019-05-17 Thread Don Wilhelm
We all will miss Fred. My condolences to his family and friends. I had
the pleasure of reviewing the draft of his first K3 manual.

I never had the pleasure of meeting him face to face, but we had many
email exchanges.

I have a signed copy of his K3S and P3 manual that was a gift from Fred,
and I will treasure it now more than ever before.

This just makes Fred's books that much more valuable. Now they're something
to remember him by, his legacy. As I usually do in such sad times, I will
remember Fred fondly, and read for him the Heart Sutra's culmination...

Gaté, gaté, paragaté, parasamgaté.
Bodhi!
Svaha!

(which means...)
Gone, gone, gone over, gone fully over.
Awakened!
So be it!

Fred, you will be missed.

2019-05-17 Thread Clay Autery
I hate to hear this.  He was a great asset to the hobby, and a nice
man.  I never met him in person, but when I was BRAND NEW to
Elecrafting, Fred took the time to answer all my questions... good and
bad and I'm sure frustrating.  He never missed a beat or showed any
hesitancy to help.  He even chatted with me on the phone once for a long
time to make sure I had things straight.

He will be greatly missed.  I will be praying for his family. :-(

[Elecraft] KE7X Elecraft Books

2017-05-06 Thread Cady, Fred
Thanks to all who commented on the Macro Programming book. I thought I'd post
a little road map on where the various volumes can be found.

There are two places the Elecraft books can be found. Elecraft stocks the
spiral bound, hard copies of the K3S, KX-Line, the KPA500 and KA500 book, the
KX3 Portable book, and the KX2 books.
“The Elecraft KX2 – Ultra-Portable, Handheld HF Rig”
“The Elecraft KX2 Companion’s Guide – The KXPA100 and KAT100”
“The Elecraft K3s and P3 – Getting the Most out from Your High Performance
Station”.

"The Portable Elecraft KX3 – Going for the Summit with the KX3 and KX3-2M/4M"

“The Elecraft KX-Line – The Complete Station”

“The Elecraft KPA500 and KAT500 – the K-Line Dream Station, 2nd. Ed.”

These are all listed on the Elecraft order page.

PDF versions of these, and hard copy and PDF versions of the following are
available through www.lulu.com.

"The Elecraft K3 and P3, 3rd Edition – Incorporating the KXV3B and KIO3B"
 “The Elecraft KXPA100, PX3 and 2M/4M Transverters – Assembling the KX-Line
Station”
“The Elecraft P3, SVGA, and TX Monitor”
“Upgrading the Elecraft K3 with K3s Components – Bridging the Gap”

[Elecraft] KE7X "Elecraft Macro Programming" book - simply great...

2017-01-19 Thread glcazz...@alice.it
I just bought on LULU system the new Fred book about macros.I was waiting it
anxiously, becouse I had programmed some macros, at first only on PF1-PF2-M1-M2
on my K3S, and, after that I bought a K-POD, on this last great accessory.
Used it for split, unsplit, full power and lower power for amp, two different
settings for AGC THR, continuously changing if filters.I have just opened the
pdf book, it seem really a great work.I want to make better use of K-POD, i
hope it will help me.73 de Ian IK4EWX

[Elecraft] KE7X "The Elecraft K3 and P3, 3rd. Edition -- Incorporating the KXV3B and KIO3B"

2015-10-30 Thread Cady, Fred
Hello all,

Just Released:

This book covers the details you need to effectively operate the Elecraft K3
and P3. If you are thinking about buying a used Elecraft K3, this book will
help you review the options that may be in your proposed purchase. Many options
are still available. Some are no longer available, usually due to components
being no longer available, and some can be replaced by newer K3S modules. We
briefly describe these and cover in more detail the popular KXV3B Transverter
and Receive Antenna Interface and the KIO3B I/O Interface while comparing them
with their K3 predecessors. If you all ready have a copy of "The Elecraft K3 -
Design, Configuration, and Operation, 2nd Edition", you might consider
purchasing "Upgrading the K3 with K3s Components". If you want all your
information in one place, this is the book for you. You might also consider
"The Elecraft KPA500 Amplifier and KAT500 Tuner" if you are going to add these
to your basic K3 and P3 station.

Printed, spiral coil bound copies are available from
www.lulu.com, as is the PDF downloadable version. You can
also purchase the PDF version from KE7X.

See www.ke7x.com for full tables of contents and
Frequently Asked Questions and ordering information.

Re: [Elecraft] KE7X KX3 Book and Configuring: KX3, K3, KPA500, and KAT500

2014-04-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Given the fact that band data pullup resistors are included in the K3,
the only certain way to assure you are going to "get what you want"
would be to disconnect the K3 to KPA500 cable when using another
transceiver.

There may be a possibility of leaving the K3 powered on with the cable
connected, but that sounds 'iffy' to me because the K3 would be
determining the band that the KPA500 selects.

I think Jack's comment "...something else going on..." is right on.

The band line pull-ups in the K3 are somewhat problematic. They weren't there
in the first placed (which was good design) but were added to the K3 early on
to compensate for band decoders that didn't have pull ups (not good design).
So that explains why the KPA500 shows 5.3 MHZ when the K3 is turned off.

However, neither of the key lines from the K3 (KEY OUT and KEYOUT_LP in ACC, K3
schematic of June 2010) are pulled up. One is an open drain and one an open
collector. These two lines are wire-ORed together in the KPA500. Wire-OR means
either KEY OUT or KEYOUT_LP or both can key the KPA500. So I don't think that
is what is causing the behavior you see.

I don't have the KX3 in the mix here at the moment but I tried the following:

K3 on 15 m, KPA on in Operate mode showing 21 MHZ.
Turn K3 off. KPA switches to Standby immediately and then shows 5.3 MHZ a
second or two later (significant delay there).
K3 still off. KPA switch from Standby to Operate and back and forth no problem.
K3 still off, KPA in Standby. Ground the KPA keying line PA KEY. KPA can
switch to operate and back and forth no problem. When in Operate the * shows
on the display as expected (saying the amp key line is low).

Another culprit might be DIGOUT1, although that too is an open collector
output. I wouldn't expect that to be doing anything when the K3 is off but if
you see a _ in the KPA display, that means the amp is inhibited when you try to
key because INHIBIT in enabled and DIGOUT1 is low.

Firmware: K3 4.83, KPA 1.38

What is your firmware? There was a firmware change in the KPA a while ago that
fixed a power up problem.

Cheers,
Fred

Re: [Elecraft] KE7X KX3 Book and Configuring: KX3, K3, KPA500, and KAT500

2014-04-23 Thread d...@lightstream.net
I have four transceivers connected up in such a way that I can use all of
them with the KPA500/KAT500 by simply switching the appropriate RF path to
the KPA500 RF Input port.

The setup is as follows:
-- 'Wiper' of four-port coaxial RF switch connects to KPA500 "RF Input" port

-- The four ports of the coaxial RF switch are connected to: K3, KX3, K2,
HPSDR

-- The "TX Enable/Amp Key Lines" from ONLY the KX3, K2, and HPSDR are
simply paralleled via an assortment of RCA "Y" adapters and connected to
the KPA500 "PA Key" port. NOTE: The K3's "KEY OUT" line is *NOT* included
in this parallel connection, and is not used at all.

-- The K3 is connected to the KPA500 via the KPAK3AUX cable

With this arrangement, and ALL transceivers powered 'ON', I can select any
of the four transceivers via the RF coaxial switch, and drive the KPA500
to full output without issue. The usual steps are:
-- Place the KPA500 into STBY

-- Select the desired transceiver via the RF coaxial switch

-- Select the desired band etc., and make sure the power level is adjusted
appropriately to drive the KPA500.

-- Tap the key to send some 'heads-up' RF to the KPA500, and in response,
the KPA500 switches to the appropriate band, and the KAT500 switches to
the appropriate frequency and pulls the settings from memory.

-- Place the KPA500 into OPERATE mode

That's it. I understand that paralleling the "TX Enable/Amp Key Lines"
from all of the transceivers is less than optimal, but for these
particular transceivers, it has worked fine. Since the K3 is the primary
radio in the shack, it always remains on. (I have NOT tried any of this
with the K3 powered down) I have also used this arrangement with all other
transceivers powered OFF except for the K3 and whichever other radio I
want to use. For example, if I want to use the KX3, the K3 and KX3 are
both powered ON, but the other transceivers can be OFF. The KX3 will
drive the KPA500 to about 175 watts or so, depending upon band.

I've used this arrangement for quite a while without any issues, but I
make no claim that there are not any dangers in doing things this way. If
there are, I haven't discovered them - yet.

Jack,

Thanks for the detailed explanation. So, if the K3 pulls the keyline to ground
and the STBY/OPER switch is inoperative as a result, then why would power cycle
on KPA500 change things. I mean, I assume that the keyline is still pulled to
ground by the K3. But, I admit that I am not an electronics guy as you others
so I do not fully understand all of the stuff that goes on in these things.

Re: [Elecraft] KE7X KX3 Book and Configuring: KX3, K3, KPA500, and KAT500

2014-04-22 Thread Jack Brindle
There appears to be some misconceptions in this discussion. First, the
information flow from the K3 to the KPA only occurs on the band lines and the
key line. Auxbus communications is one-way, from the KPA to the K3. The KPA
does not listen on the Auxbus.

There is also something else going on that is in play here. When the K3 is
powered off, the pull-ups on the band lines (and the key line, I believe)
continue to work. They continue to pull the lines to Vcc. But with the K3 off,
Vcc is now 0 volts. This means that a short time after the K3 powers off the
KPA will see all zeros on the band lines, and will switch to 60 meters. After
this, RF coming into the KPA will cause it to switch to the appropriate band,
and all band switching will occur with incoming RF as long as the band lines do
not change.

Of course, there is one other signal in play here. The Key line is important
since it causes the KPA to switch into transmit. We have seen the K3 pull the
Key line to ground at times, which just may be what you are seeing. If the KEY
line is active, the KPA will not switch from STBY to OPER. For this to happen
the KEY line must be high.

The best way to connect two transceivers to the KPA is to use a physical switch
to select the transceiver. A five-pole two position switch will do for the band
and key lines, plus a coax switch of the RF.

In short, you may get things to work with the description from Fred’s book. But
if the key line becomes driven low by the “off” transceiver for any reason, you
can expect weird things to happen.

2014-04-22 Thread Phil Hystad
Don,

OK, I may be expecting too much. Actually, I am not sure if I was expecting as
much as I was a little bit surprised by the behavior. I didn't think that the
KPA500 and KX3 communicated with each other other than RF and Key line but
maybe that was enough of a difference from the K3. The K3 of course in my case
has the AUX cable connections with the KPA500 and KAT500.

It is not a big deal as long as this is the way it is expected to work. I was
not sure if I had done something wrong or not.

But, just picked up W1AW/5 MS QRP power with the KX3. Actually, it was about 6
watts.

Re: [Elecraft] KE7X KX3 Book and Configuring: KX3, K3, KPA500, and KAT500

2014-04-22 Thread Don Wilhelm

Phil,

I think you may be expecting too much.
Consider a parallel - a computer communicating with a printer. If you
suddenly switch the printer cable to another computer, would you expect
the printer to continue printing without any intervention?

The "printer" in this comparison is the KPA500 and the two "computers"
are the K3 and the KX3.

It is not unreasonable IMHO to expect that a reset of the KPA500 would
be required.

If the KPA500 were simply an amplifier with no communications capability
with the driving transceiver, switching from one source of RF input to
another should proceed without regard to whatever is the driving device,
but your KPA500 is more than "just an amplifier" because it can
communicate with the K3 or KX3 driving transceiver. Expecting the KPA500
to switch data streams from two different transceivers with no
intervening reset is not realistic.

So, is this normal behavior? I wasn't expecting any kind of comms between the
K3 and the KPA500 that affects the STBY/OPER switching. It does seem that a
power on/off cycle for the KPA500 is required to enable that switch.

Is this designed to work this way or is this a flaw in the design or maybe a
missing mini-feature of configuring two different transceivers with the KPA500.
I admit to not scouring all of the documentation yet on the expected
functionality of the STBY/OPER switch.

2014-04-22 Thread Don Wilhelm

Phil,

Let me get this straight - the KPA500 is communicating with the K3, then
you switch to the KX3 and the KPA500 does not talk with the KX3.

If that is what is happening, I would expect that to be the case. The
communications with the K3 is not synchronized with the attempted
communications with the KX3, so a reset (power cycle) of the KPA500 may
be required.

2014-04-22 Thread Phil Hystad
Some follow-up questions:

OK, I have the KX3 and K3 configured with the KPA500 and KAT500. Everything
seems to work with one little exception.

The exception:

--- initial conditions, K3 is on and switched to use the KPA500 and KAT500.
 KX3 is off.

--- using K3 and so on works fine with amp on or with amp in standby.

--- I turn off K3. Leave KPA500 on but in STBY mode.

--- Switch coax from K3 to KX3 (1x2 switch).

--- Turn on KX3. KPA500 still in STBY mode.

--- Attempt to switch KPA500 to OPER from STBY but switch does not work.
If I power off the
KPA500 (front panel switch) and power back on then switch works fine.

I have experimented with all kinds of starting initial conditions and order of
events but whenever
the KPA500 is left on after using the K3 and then switching to the KX3, the
switch on the KPA500
to go from STBY to OPER does not work. I always have to cycle the power from
the front panel on/off
switch.

What have I done or am I doing wrong?

Note: all functionality works fine with this one exception. With the current
power settings from the KX3
I am getting about 135 watts output from the KPA500 into my hex beam and also
my 80-meter dipole.
SWR is about 1:1 TUNED via the KAT500 on dipole and I usually operate the hex
beam in bypass and this
has a 1.2:1 SWR or there abouts.

2014-04-22 Thread Don Wilhelm

Phil,

You need to put the Keyline Interrupter on the K3 ACC connector, then
use the RCA cable from the K3 KEYOUT jack to the KPA500.

If you ordered the KPAK3AUX cable set, you have (or had) the Key Line
Interrupter. See
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KPAK3AUX%20Cable%20Set%20Instructions.pdf.

The KX3 must use the KeyIn of the KPA500, so the K3 must also use that
same keying scheme - the KPA500 has a conflict if both the KeyOut-LP
line in the ACC cable is connected at the same time as the RCA Keying
cable from the K3, and that is where the Keying Interrupter comes in.

[Elecraft] KE7X KX3 Book and Configuring: KX3, K3, KPA500, and KAT500

2014-04-22 Thread Phil Hystad
Fred or others...

I am still a little confused on the diagram in KE7X's KX3 book about hooking up
the KX3, K3, KPA500, and KAT500. My question regard the hookup diagram, figure
9.17, on page 147 on the KE7X KX3 book.

Confusion is about keyline hookup. The diagram shows that both the K3 and the
KX3 must be wired together (via a Y-adapter) in controlling keyline. Also,
that a keyline interrupter is used in the KPAK3AUX cable between the K3 and the
KAT500.

Question: what is a keyline interrupter? Is this something I have (KX3 cable
kit) or is this something I make? I presume that this is used to block the
keyline signal on the AUX cable thus forcing use of the K3 keyline connection
directly. Confirmation on this please.

Question: if the K3 must be off when I am switched to use the KX3 driving the
KPA500/KAT500 then why is this extra keyline hookup needed on the K3? I mean,
if the K3 is off, what function does it supply. If the K3 is on and the KX3 is
off then why not allow the K3 to control keyline via the AUX cable as it is
doing right now (in my K3-KPA500-KAT500) configuration.

Re: [Elecraft] KE7X books 14% discount

2014-02-07 Thread John Reed, W8DE
I did a google search to find the discount code and found a 25% off code at
retailmenot. So I got the K3 PDF book for $18.75. Even at that price I was
skeptical that it would have much more than the K3 owner's manual. I was
pleasantly surprised by this book. It contains better explanations of
features and operating techniques compared to the owner's manual. The big
difference is the organization of this book and that it's written with a
nice flow that makes it enjoyable to read. I just ordered my K3. My only
other experience has been with my K1. I think Fred's K3 book is going to be
a big help for me in stepping up to the K3.

Isn't Amazon just reselling the book that someone else bought (for a HUGE

2013-07-01 Thread Cady, Fred
Hello all,
Well, the KE7X KRC2 app note is yet another unfinished project I need to get
back on.

The KRC2 is a great little decoder box with tremendous flexibility in how you
use it but it does require you to carefully study the schematic. Here are some
of my more-or-less random observations. I hope to put these into a more
cohesive form one of these days (soon).

KRC2 Outputs:
The KRC2 outputs can be used in high-side driver applications (where the
external device needs + voltage) or low-side drivers (where the external device
needs a signal pulled to ground). The KRC2 can do both simultaneously. Note
that the high-side driver supplies +12 V when asserted but is NOT pulled to
ground when it is not asserted. Similarly, the low-side drivers are not pulled
up when not asserted.

There are 16 high-side and 16 low-side outputs. You can map them anyway you
like (even to do a BCD output) but note that the mapping will be the same on
the high-side and the low-side.

Although there isn't a native BCD coded output, you can make one by using the
low-side drivers and supplying the needed pull-up in your external device
(which is the way those devices should be designed anyway, but that's another
story).

Using the AUXBUS:
As others have mentioned, the best way to use the KRC2 with the K3 is to use
the AUXBUS output on the K3's ACC connector. A caveat is, like the KAT500, the
KRC2 must be powered-up before the K3. If it isn't, the K3 will just sit there
with a blank screen when you turn it on. That's very scary when it happens to
you the first time! The reason that happens is that the KRC2 seems to load the
AUXBUS down when it (the KRC2) is not powered-up. I'm not sure I understand
why. Bottom line: Turn the KRC2 on first and keep it power-up.

Using the Serial Port:
Be very careful if you go this route. The problem is that the KRC2 was designed
to use the K2's serial port, which if you recall, is a non-standard RS232
interface. If you connect the KRC2 to a standard serial port with the standard
RS232 signals RI, CTS, RTS, DSR, and DTR, AND with the KRC2's jumpers W11-W15
connected you could (and probably will) damage the KRC2. Don't ask me how I
know that. When jumpers W9, W10 and W22 are installed, the KRC2 can pass K3
serial data on to a PC, for logging or other operating. If you want to do that,
the K3's serial data must be 19.2 Kbaud. I haven't played with this mode enough
to see how the P3's baud rate fits into the whole scheme.

Using the BCD Input:
The K3 does put out BCD band data on the ACC jack and this can be used with the
KRC2. I don't see problems with this approach other than the known problems
associated with the K3's internal pull-ups that limit the loading it can drive
on the BCD outputs. I think the KRC2 will work OK but you might not want to
have other loads from other decoders on these signals. I have yet to play with
this mode.

Jack Brindle is a great and friendly resource for questions on the KRC2.

I'll get back onto this writing project one of these days as it gets warmer in
MT and I take refuge in the coolness of my basement shack.

73 and cheers,
Fred KE7X

Re: [Elecraft] KE7X K3 and KX3 books 20% discount code

2013-06-03 Thread Fred Smith
I have all of Fred's books and really like the KX3 new release, I also
bought the PDF version. Both are great and very useful the PDF is installed
on my iPad and a laptop, shack computer. I printed out the PDF version put
it in a 3 ring file folder very flat and put it in my Zero case in the top
so I have it with me.

All of the KX3 "Going for the Summit" book I found to be very useful as
usual and well written like he is known for.

Thanks Fred for taking the time to enlighten all of us with your writing!

Same size print, more pages. More portable.

Had a lot of trouble with PayPal on Lulu - tried 3 times, cancelled the
order and just used my credit card directly - worked the first time. The
site is slow, but it gets there.

Yes I received my book yesterday also and the PDF version the day before. It
is all I was expecting after having his book on the K3. Both versions are
worth every penny and the PDF version is now installed on my 2 shack
desktops, 2 laptops and my iPad even thought about my Samsung Gs4 Smartphone
but didn't.

The iPad is what I take with me when I go portable for SOTA have "Pocket
SOTA" on it and phone and plus the program "SOTA Logger Lite" a free
program.

Fred's book worked in so well for this sort of thing that all I can say is
THANKS!!

[Elecraft] KE7X KX3 book available

2013-05-16 Thread Cady, Fred
Greetings all. The KE7X KX3 book (The Elecraft KX3) is hot off the presses (or
hot in the presses). It is now available from Lulu (www.lulu.com) or from KE7X
(www.ke7x.com). This book follows the general approach taken by the KX3's big
sibling's book for the K3. There are many schematics and diagrams for those who
learn best by reading. Hands-on learners will enjoy working through exercises
designed to illustrate the KX3's many features.

There are two versions of the book. A full-size, 8.5" x 11" version is coil
bound just like the K3 book. For portable operations, a portable-size, 6" x 9"
coil-bound version is available. It has exactly the same information as the
full size book (even the font size is the same). It is just formatted into the
smaller size, which fits nicely into one of Rose's KX3 cases. KE7X can do a
special order for those who would like a 3-hole punched book.

This edition of The Elecraft KX3 has been published knowing that all features
planned for the KX3 by Elecraft have not been implemented. We have attempted to
cover those situations where features are known to be coming. As new
information about new features becomes available, and as the inevitable errors
are discovered, updates and corrections will be posted on the www.ke7x.com
website. These will be freely available as pdf files on the website.

When the KXPA100 100-W amplifier, the KXAT100 100-W antenna tuner, and the
KX3-2M two meter transverter become available, a companion book covering these
products will be published.
Those ordering from Lulu may be able to use the discount code MAYBOOKS13 until
the end of May for a 20% discount. Sorry, but I can't do that too.

[Elecraft] KE7X K3 Book -- Second Edition

2012-12-05 Thread Cady, Fred
Hello all,
I have posted the new edition of "The Elecraft K3: Design,
Configuration, and Operation Second Edition" up on Lulu. I understand
there is a 20% discount code for December: DECBOOKS12

There aren't many significant changes in the second edition compared to
the first edition. The errata in the first edition have been fixed and
some explanations of K3 features have been improved. Measurements of the
new AGC THR and SLP parameters have been made and are included. Chapter
9 has been expanded to include a description of the P3's SVGA option,
and the indexing has been improved to help readers find information and
answer questions. (It even has references to the + Icon.)

If you have the first edition it probably isn't worth getting the second
edition.

I have deleted the pdf file choice on Lulu until I can figure out a way
to block nefarious copyright infringers from ripping me off and selling
overpriced copies on Amazon and eBay. Please email me (off the list) if
you are interested in the pdf or other electronic version.

If you don't like going through Lulu, see my website for alternative
purchasing.

73 and cheers,

Fred Cady
