Re: [Elecraft] KX3/PX3 vs FT-710

2022-12-14 Thread Eric Fitzgerald

Greg,

I think it is unreasonable to compare radios that come with two
completely different price points (not to mention delivery dates).  The
KX3 fully tricked out is like, what, 3x the cost? Don't get me wrong, I
absolutely prefer the fully loaded KX3 in this comparison otherwise.

Dealing with Yaesu after the purchase is a lot different than dealing
with Elecraft, plus the support community here is second to none.
Trying to get help on Yeasu's various reflectors is pretty painful.
Nothing like this group.

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3 vs FT-710

2022-12-14 Thread Greg Herman
On cyber Monday I picked up an FT – 710 for a great price of $1050. If
this would’ve been my first radio I probably would I fell in love with it,,
but unfortunately for Yaesu it was my third radio. 1=IC703, 2=
KX3/PX3/KXPA100, 3= FT710
The display on the FT 710 is beautiful, but unfortunately I have to put on
reading glasses to use it, whereas my old KX3/PX3 I can use without
reading glasses in my camper. The audio output on the 710 was excellent
for my OM hearing. But to me the background noise on the KX3 seems just a
little smoother, not sure how to describe that? The PX3 panadapter puts
the Yaesu to shame, Yaesu has a lot of work to do on their approach
towards a panadapter Elecraft has the end-user in mine on their panadapter
. The adjustability of frequency input was kind of a pain on the Yaesu.
Very easy to adjust what you want on the KX3 via tapping the rat button.
Antenna tuner?, Well we all know who the winner is there.
And the winner is? The KX3, the Yaesu is on his way back to GigaParts.
PS if you’re looking for a good radio on a budget I would recommend Yaesu,
they do need a lot of firmware updates to make it a better user-friendly
radio

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3 encoders.

2022-07-31 Thread w4sc
Hello List

Encoders in both my KX3 and PX3 have become very noisey after being idle for a
few months. The PX3 is on verge of total failure.

I know the KX3 had an encoder upgrade a while back and that appears to be an
easy process to effect replacement.

For the PX3 I can find no information on the replacement process. Has anyone
on the list perform the replacement activity?

TIA

[Elecraft] FS: Elecraft KX3/PX3 and extras (Shack in a bag)

2021-04-06 Thread Scott Manthe
Hi everyone, I'm not sure this got through last night due to Gmail.
Sorry if it did and it's a repost!

I'm selling my loaded Elecraft KX3 and its companion PX3, along with
some accessories. This is essentially a shack in a bag.

The KX3 S/N 7286 includes:
KXFL3 dual passband filter
KXBC3 internal charger/realtime clock
KXAT3 auto tuner
KXPD3 paddles
MH3 hand mic
KXUSB USB cable
The KX3 is in nice shape. The front panel is flawless, but there are a
couple of scratches

on the back case and on the bezel/lens.

PX3 S/N 2726 is in great shape, with the original box, but not packaging
Side KX side panels and cover
original Elecraft side panels
power cord
KXUSB cable
The package includes all interconnecting cables for the KX3/PX3.
The Portable Elecraft KX3 by Fred Cady, second edition.
ES80 Carry Case
Nifty stands for both the KX3 and PX3
Pro Audio Engineering KX33 power supply
Everything works great.

I'd like $1750 shipped for everything, or make an offer. Pics are
available on request.

[Elecraft] KX3 PX3 PSK31 SPLIT

2021-04-03 Thread stephen shearer

OK,  I tried...

Can I set up the internal PSK31 for split?

I tried, the best I could do is RIT.
It would be nice to TX and have split to tune RX.
PSK31 works, but is touchy.  It would be nice to leave the TX freq alone
(so the other station doesn't have to chase you) as you move the RX freq
to keep any lock.  Stronger signals "seem" to less of a problem.
BTW, the PX3 with keyboard is very nice for digital modes as "function"
keys provide text memories.

(has anyone else made use of this feature?)

Decode ON (for one) makes SPLIT N/A ??

Anyone tried this on K4?

I’m willing to split the KX3 and PX3. There a couple of people interested in
just the PX3, but no sale yet. If the price isn’t reasonable, please make an

I would like to pick up a KX2 by the end of the month so I have it for a Labor
Day road trip. If anyone has one they want to part with, I would be interested.

Thanks.

This PSU IS quiet when supplying the 150mA or so needed on receive, but
pretty noisy with the much larger currents needed for transmit. That
means it's fine if it only powers a KX3 and you're not trying to listen
on another radio at the same time.

Nice install.
I took the GEM mounts and plywood one more step. I used a ~12" round
3/4" plywood disk and mounted three RAM mounts;
https://www.rammount.com/ . KX3, PX3 and Plastic "box". The box can
hold audio ADC and CAT control or for picnic table OP's, and antenna. I
am able to adjust KX3/PX3 angle and position for best OP...

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3 Opposite Sideband Nulling

2019-09-27 Thread Grant Youngman
I posted a couple of queries about these adjustments, and didn’t get any
responses. So .. I just went ahead and aligned both the KX3 and PX3.

For what it’s worth, the phase/amplitude settings for opposite sideband null on
both the KX3 (except for FL1) and PX3 (everywhere) were substantially different
than the factory/default settings. Double checked everything.

So there’s a good chance, even if you purchased factory assembled units, that
it’s worth visiting the opposite sideband null adjustments if you have a
suitable signal generator and some spare time.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/PX3 on 2 meters

2019-03-28 Thread Mike Parkes
Okay well I tried transmitting at 144.49 from my HT and yep! Sure enough a
big orange signal on the PX3 so it seems to be working fine, I guess the 2
meter background noise is so much less than on HF apparently. It is
certainly totally blank on the PX3 though without an actual signal.

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3 on 2 meters

2019-03-28 Thread Mike Parkes
I have started running wspr mode on 2 meters using the KX3/PX3. I have not
even tried using the PX3 on 2 meters til today as I am always on HF.
I notice that I see nothing at all on the PX3 on 2 meters?
It can't be the squelch because I am showing a signal coming off the
speaker connection going to the PC sound card, and the KX3 shows about an
S2 noise level on 2 meters.
thanks for any thoughts! 73's

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3 for sale

2019-02-03 Thread Neil Ramhorst

Hello All,

I have a KX3 and PX3 set for sale. There are lots of options included. A
few options are nifty stands, side rails, from covers, heat sink, cw
paddle, signal link USB, Side Kar, and a custom aluminum base that holds
all of it. Unit has been back to Elecraft for calibration and alignment.

I can send a complete list and photographs.

Paid 3400.00 and will sell for 2400.00. Do not want to split up.

I'm looking to purchase a KPA500 and KAT500. If someone has one will
consider trade.

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3/KXPA100 + accessories for sale

2019-01-28 Thread David Orman
Hi,

I have a KX3/PX3/KXPA100 combination I'd like to sell. I am the original
owner, and purchased all of the above in 8/2014. The KX3/PX3 was purchased
factory assembled, the KXPA100 was purchased as a kit, and assembled by me.
The KX3 is fully loaded, as you will see below, to include the 2m option.

All of the equipment is in excellent condition, and the PX3/KX3 have the
Side-KX options installed, including the plastic covers. The covers are in
good shape, with minor scratching as to be expected from plastic covers.
Photos are included below, with covers off/on.

In the interest of full disclosure, while performing the suggested
capacitor modification to improve the power-on delay on the PX3 (as guided
by Elecraft) a solder pad pulled up. This was repaired with a solder bridge
to the new capacitor in question, and the unit has functioned perfectly
since this time (April 2017). I am adjusting the requested price
accordingly, even though there is no impact to the performance or
functionality of this unit (and the power on delay is significantly
improved!)

I have included a video in the link below so you can see the PX3/KX3/KXPA100
functioning. I also adjust ref/scale and move around the band both via
radio and via PX3 in the video, so you can see it is functioning as
expected.

Everything else is exactly as delivered from Elecraft, and functioning
properly. The KX3 has had the full set of calibration performed on it, to
include extended temperature compensation, nulling, and filters, as I have
a bench of test equipment including a GPSDO locked signal generator.

Here's what I'm including, and current list pricing:

MH3 Hand Mic. for KX3
$59.95

KXFL3 Dual-Passband Roofing Filter
$149.95

KXAT3 ATU for the KX3
$199.95

KXPD3 Precision Keyer Paddle
$129.95

KXBC3 Int. NiMH Charger/Clk for KX3
$79.95

KX3-2M-AT 2M All-Mode Internal KX3 Option
$259.95

KXPACBL KX3 to KXPA100 Adapt. Cable
$49.95

KXPA100-K 100 W External Amplifier - Kit
$749.95

KXAT100 Internal ATU for KXPA100
$379.95

KX3-F 160-6 M Xcvrr Assm
$1,049.95

PX3-F Panadapter for KX3 - Factory Assembled
$599.95

XG50 Simple 49.380 MHz Signal Source
$39.95

SUBTOTAL $3,749.40

Keep in mind this subtotal does not include the Side-KX sides/covers. I am
also including the original sides for PX3/KX3 in case you wish to use them
instead. I do have the upgrade board for the paddle, as well, as well as
various tools/parts for the accessories. I am also including a few KXUSB
cables which currently list for $32.95. I'll also throw in the 2m antenna
seen attached to the radio in the photos.

KX3 serial number is 6755, PX3 is 0630, and KXPA100 is 1218.

---

I'm willing to sell the whole package for $2800 OBO.

My reason for selling is simple, I've moved to a pure desktop setup as I've
not found myself working remote as I had anticipated.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/g6rqVoXqF8i1FnL63 has photos and the video
showing operation, after which all were stored.

I live in San Antonio, TX and would prefer to arrange for local (you can
check it out in person) or regional pickup (happy to meet half-way). I have
batteries, so if meeting elsewhere, we can turn it all on so you can verify
operation if desired.

My call-sign is K5DJO, name is David Orman, please respond directly to my
email ( orma...@corenode.com ) and I'll pass you the rest of my contact
information so we can discuss via phone if you'd like! I can provide
additional photos/videos if requested.

Respectfully,
David Orman / K5DJO

Perhaps my expectations were a bit too high on my pricing. Before I offer this
equipment up on eBay or another venue, I’ll drop my prices for the KX3/PX3 and
the other equipment. See below...

[Elecraft] KX3 + PX3 + KXPA100 audio leakage

2018-03-22 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
I've started running this setup on FT8.  For some reason, I can hear the
grinding FT8 sound on TX.  MON is set to 0, AF 54, MIC 60--these produce the
right levels of Tx and Rx audio with the soundcard levels set mid-range.  DATA
mode.  I think the sound is coming from the KX3.  Any ideas how I can make it
silent?
Thanks and 73

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3/KXPA100 + accessories for sale

2018-01-16 Thread David Orman

I am adjusting the requested price
accordingly, even though there is no impact to the performance or
functionality of this unit (and the power on delay is significantly
improved!)

I have included a video in the link below so you can see the
PX3/KX3/KXPA100 functioning. The cursor will skip ahead if you move it
quickly, but it's always done that since new, and as far as I can tell is
common to PX3s in general (my friend's does the same). I made sure to
include this in the video (you'll see it happen at one point) - the cursor
will move faster than I rotate the knob. I also adjust ref/scale and move
around the band both via radio and via PX3 in the video, so you can see it
is functioning as expected.

Everything else is exactly as delivered from Elecraft, and functioning
properly. The KX3 has had the full set of calibration performed on it, to
include extended temperature compensation, nulling, and filters, as I have
a bench of test equipment including a GPSDO locked signal generator.

Here's what I'm including, and current list pricing:

MH3 Hand Mic. for KX3
$59.95

KXFL3 Dual-Passband Roofing Filter
$149.95

KXAT3 ATU for the KX3
$199.95

KXPD3 Precision Keyer Paddle
$129.95

KXBC3 Int. NiMH Charger/Clk for KX3
$79.95

KX3-2M-AT 2M All-Mode Internal KX3 Option
$259.95

KXPACBL KX3 to KXPA100 Adapt. Cable
$49.95

KXPA100-K 100 W External Amplifier - Kit
$749.95

KXAT100 Internal ATU for KXPA100
$379.95

KX3-F 160-6 M Xcvrr Assm
$1,049.95

PX3-F Panadapter for KX3 - Factory Assembled
$599.95

XG50 Simple 49.380 MHz Signal Source
$39.95

SUBTOTAL $3,749.40

Keep in mind this subtotal does not include the Side-KX sides/covers. I am
also including the original sides for PX3/KX3 in case you wish to use them
instead. I do have the upgrade board for the paddle, as well, as well as
various tools/parts for the accessories. I am also including a few KXUSB
cables which currently list for $32.95. I'll also throw in the 2m antenna
seen attached to the radio in the photos.

KX3 serial number is 6755, PX3 is 0630, and KXPA100 is 1218.

---

I'm willing to sell the whole package for $2800 OBO.

My reason for selling is simple, I'm moving up to a pure desktop
(configuring a K3s as we speak) setup as I've not found myself working
remote as I had anticipated.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/g6rqVoXqF8i1FnL63 has photos and the video
showing operation, taken today (Jan. 16, 2018).

I live in San Antonio, TX and would prefer to arrange for local (you can
check it out in person) or regional pickup (happy to meet half-way) via
cash, but check/money order can be negotiated for remote buyers as well (US
buyers only, need to wait for check to clear/MO to be validated - been
burned before which is why I prefer local sales). I have batteries, so if
meeting elsewhere, we can turn it all on so you can verify operation if
desired.

My call-sign is K5DJO, name is David Orman, please respond directly to my
email ( orma...@corenode.com ) and I'll pass you the rest of my contact
information so we can discuss via phone if you'd like! My address and
information is current in FCC/ULS, and I can provide additional
photos/videos if requested.

Respectfully,
David Orman / K5DJO

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/PX3 Linux Utilities for Raspberry Pi?

2017-08-28 Thread James Bennett
I’ll do the “me too” thing and put in my wish for an ARM-based version of the
utilities. I run my KX3 and KX2 with RPi 3 machines and it is a bit of a pain
to boot up a Windows machine, wait seemingly forever to have it finish up it’s
gazillion patches and fixes, just to do a quick firmware refresh.

Please Elecraft - there are a LOT of Raspberry Pi / Elecraft users out there!

2017-08-28 Thread Kurt
Please add me to this list as well.
I have some 'remoted' KX-3s that are connected to Raspberry Pis. I use VNC
to access Fldigi running on the Pis. I have no way to update the firmware
or, more importantly, save and restore the config data for the KX-3s.
I run Raspbian Jessie.
Thanks for considering this Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] kx3 px3

2017-04-02 Thread Fred Moore
Fred: Turns out I had already read everything you suggested, and did
correctly understand the compensation, however...

-73dbm at the antenna, signal generator only (no noise)

does =S9 on the KX3, and does not = -73dbm on PX3  (Lvl Mode = scale:db)

Per PX3 manual page 23 bottom right paragraph 5th sentence down:

"The indicated dBm level should be the signal level at the signal level
at the KX3 antenna input"

In my case this is not true, I am seeing about a 10-12dBm difference.
In my previous post, I referenced S9 and 50 microvolts, thinking most
people on the list are not use to referencing dBm, that was my error.
After re-reading my original post I even said mV when I intended
micro.. I should have been more specific, and correct..

I do not expect the PX3 to be a precision instrument, however I am
trying to resolve and understand a 10+db error here, huge to me, which
should not exist according to the PX3 manual, but may be in the PX3
specification if its specification is +-10%. As a side note the PX3
scale does appear to be linear, relative to dBm, i.e. the error is the
same through the usable scale..

If that is normal I can live with it, I simply want to understand if
this is what others are seeing.. and make sure this new to me PX3 is
operating correctly..

Re: [Elecraft] kx3 px3

2017-04-01 Thread Cady, Fred
Have a look at the How to Set Up and Interpret the PX3 Display in the PX3
manual where this is explained (Or the Why??? section in the KE7X KX-Line
book). Basically the PX3 and KX3 are different bandwidth detectors so the
signal levels displayed generally won't be the same. They are two different
instruments meant to show two different things. The KX3 s-meter shows you the
signal level you have to work with in the KX3 with its bandwidth and signal
processing active and the PX3 is far more useful to show the relative signals
across the band.

Re: [Elecraft] kx3 px3

2017-04-01 Thread Don Wilhelm

Fred,

See the PX3 manual page 16 "Adjusting the Amplitude".
First set the bottom of the spectrum display so the band noise level (or
receiver noise floor) is at the bottom (REF).

Then set SCALE to adjust the vertical gain.
I think it is best to ignore the S-x amplitude and set SCALE so the
strongest signals are near the top of the display. You can easily see
the relative strength of the various signals. For me the vertical scale
is more useful when displaying dBm rather than S-units.

Hi David,

I'd prefer to have folks that are experiencing this problem email me
directly. That way I can determine the best resolution path. The fix
involves replacing a surface mount capacitor which is located under the
power supply board on the front panel board.

Kindly,

Paul

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/PX3/KXPA100 - PX3 taking 5 minutes to come on??? KXPA100 loses mind...

2017-02-12 Thread Jack Spitznagel

Hi Brian,

Well it is usually about 65F(~18C) in the shack this time of year unless
I turn on the space heater. Not really "cold" per se. The PX3 will
misbehave on start up or after having been turned off for about 5 min.

Hi Jack,

I recently experienced something similar to your PX3 situation. When
you said "cold", I immediately perked up.

During winter field day, I decided to take my PX3 with me. Our club
worked outdoors in about -2C degree weather. The trailer I was in had
a couple of portable space heaters. It felt like they were pumping
out one BTU each :-). By the time I had the station setup, the temp
increased to about 9C, maybe. It was still cold and I had to wear a
coat. Anyway, I digress.

When I powered on the PX3, the display was dark. Picked it up to hear
the click of the power on. I heard a click. H. I tried a couple
of times. I disconnected all the inter-connect cables and still no
display. I was a bit cold and had just finished exerting a lot of
energy with the setup (antenna as well), that I just left it
disconnected and put it away. I was a bit dejected, but I had to
focus on the task at hand, because WFD was going to start in moments.
I should have left it turned on for a little while to see if the
display came back on after the internal circuitry warmed up a bit.
But that never occurred to me because every other display in my
station came to life immediately.

After the PX3 had a chance to settle at home in the warmer climes of
my shack, I connected everything back up and lo and behold, the PX3
display lit up. I was quite relieved. I wrote off the experience to
the fact that the PX3 didn't like the cold weather. I don't either :-)

Anyway Jack, I am happy to be another voice when you go to Elecraft
support regarding the PX3 display not turning on when the unit is
cold. I don't know the actual temperature that the PX3 doesn't like.
But I never had this issue before. I can turn on the PX3, when in the
house, and it comes on immediately after having sat for days in my
basement shack.

Brian

Jack,

It would seem that you have tackled the most obvious stuff.
I don't know whether you have a bad display or not, so I suggest you
contact K3support to see if they might have seen a problem like that.

I have heard about prior problems with PA MODE turning off, but I don't
recall what is to be done about it. A fault in the KXPA100 can cause
it, and the support folks may want a fault report from KXPA100 Utility.

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3/KXPA100 - PX3 taking 5 minutes to come on??? KXPA100 loses mind...

2017-02-12 Thread Jack Spitznagel

All, (particularly Don or one of the kind folks at Elecraft support)

There are two seemingly interrelated problems in this message that may
indeed be independent.

All other helpful souls - before you post an answer, please read
this ENTIRE message. I am a tech type and no stranger to radio -
computer control systems. I did check cabling to make sure it is OK,
an solidly seated. Firmware is updated and I configured all devices
   from factory settings.

My trusty KX3/PX3/KXPA100 kit has been on the shelf for an all too long
respite because the antenna farm was one tree short. It is going back
into regular service alongside an ICOM 7300 now before I build field day
and trail "go kits" for my beloved KX3 system. Since it takes about 2
hours to get everything behaving here - this is going to be a lousy
EMCOMM and Field Day solution... For the trail, it doesn't matter
because the KX3 goes alone.

Here goes: As I was bringing things back online today, I found a
stickynote to self about an issue I had with the PX3 and the KXPA100
before I stopped using the kit in December. I am still observing the
following behavior:

When the PX3 is powered on "cold", it takes about 5 minutes for the
display to light up.

This occurs regardless of the power on jumper position which is
currently back in the enable (pin3/4) position.

This occurs whether the KX3 or the KXPA100 are cabled in.

Once the PX3 is "warm". I can turn it off and then on again and it
   comes right back to life.

During this PX3 "braindead" period, when the entire setup was cabled up,
the amplifier will not work properly. To make things more annoying,
after the 5 minute braindead spell is over and the PX3 is working and if
the KXPA100 decides to cooperate, I have to go back into the menu,
enable the KXPA100, then reset the power level for the whole system
every time this happens... but the PA does not always stay on!!! Then I
have to tweak the whole system until it decides to work... when the
KXPA100 is enabled by the KX3 menu, it holds PA MODE ON a moment and
then reverts to PA MODE OFF without my doing anything.

Today in desperation, I tore everything down and re-connected several
times and FINALLY all 3 unit talked to each other and the PA stayed on.

This started occurring in the fall of 2016 (September or so), I do not
recall that any of this happened when I first assembled the PX3 and
began to use the KXPA100.

So before the inevitable deluge of helpful "Did'ja look" comments come -
current firmware is :

KX3 is at MCU version 2.38, DSP is at 1.37

PX3 is at MCU revision 1.39

KXPA100 is at revision 1.39

AND ALL units are set for 38,400 and communicate with the computer.

All cables have been checked and are properly seated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

[Elecraft] [KX3][PX3][KX2] PX3 to HDMI Large Screen (PX3HDMI); KX2 RX I/Q Output

2016-08-30 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
Uncle! I give up. No RX I/Q option board for the KX2. I'll stick with my
trusted KX3 + PX3 for portable operation (backyard, picnic table at the
park, camping, day hikes, Field Day, mini DX-peditions, travel, ...) and as
my one and only one HF base station.

I'll continue to hold out hope that Elecraft will develop an internal
adapter (i.e., PX3HDMI) to connect a PX3 to a large screen through an HDMI
interface.

[Elecraft] KX3+PX3+KXPA100 for K3(S)-100 Swap?

2016-07-18 Thread Bruce Nourish
Hi folks,

The KX2 has totally won me over for portable operations -- a fully-featured
HF radio I can fit easily in a carry-on, or my hiking pack. Now I'm
interested in switching my home station to a K3 or K3S.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has a 100W K3 or K3S, and would
like to trade for a KX3 with all the trimmings but the hand mic, plus some
money (via Paypal) in one direction or the other, depending on the details
of what you have.

Specifically, I have:

* KX3, factory assembled with the following options: KXAT3 (tuner), KXBC3
(general coverage), KXFL3 (filter).
- Also includes KXPD3 (paddles) and KX3-PCKT (full set of cables for
packet, RX I/Q, and accessories).
- I installed the KX3-2M-AT 2m module in the KX3 myself.
* PX3
* KXPA100, factory assembled; I subsequently installed the KXAT100 tuner
myself. Also includes KXPACBL, the cabling for the KX3.

No mods, excellent condition, everything works perfectly; I'd like your
K3/K3S to be about the same shape. If you were to buy my full setup new
from Elecraft, it would cost about $3,700; a new 100W K3S with no options
is $2,900, so our rigs are likely to be in the same ballpark.

I'm currently travelling, so I won't be able to make the trade until the
1st, regardless. I'm going to leave this invitation out here until then, to
see what interest I get. If none, I'll sell this gear for cash, and buy a
new K3S.

Thanks, everyone.

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3 Lines on the screen

2016-06-19 Thread Bill Frantz

Probably I'll kick myself for asking a dumb question, but here goes.

Receiving on a dummy load, I am getting a pattern of lines on
the PX3 screen with my KX3. There are 5 strong lines and 2 week
lines symmetrically on either side of the green bar (tuned
frequency). When I tune the KX3, they move with the green bar.
They move down by about 8 KHz when I switch RX SHFT to 8.0 from
NOR. The closest lines to the tuned frequency are about 12 KHz
above and below it. The other lines are not evenly spaced, but
are spaced about 3-6 KHz apart. Turning RX ISO on has no effect.

When I attach an antenna, I get normal results from signals on
the band. The signals are not distributed symmetrically they way
they would be if the I/Q cable was not inserted all the way on
the PX3 and KX3. (And I pushed really hard too.)

Any ideas of what is going on? Any way to "cure" it?

Thanks in advance.

much harder. Occasionally, I've found the DE-9 or DB-25 hold-down nuts
approximate a chassis ground, but not always, and even stuff from when I
still felt young no longer has D connectors anyway.

Beware also of the K9YC Pin One problem ... nowadays, even if there is
what looks like a chassis, it may not be what you're looking for.

1. Bond the KX3 to the power supply. 2. Bond the KX3 to the PX3. 3.
Bond the KX3 to the computer (somehow). 4. Bond the KX3 to the sound
card (in my case, a Focusrite 2i2).

Theory says to ground [assuming you can find it] at one point and keep
the straps from each device as short as possible. Point-to-point can
create loop-throughs, again see K9YC's info at audiosystemsgroup.com

Practice often differs from theory, however.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3/PX3] Bonding

2016-06-05 Thread Walter Underwood
Get a big clamp-on ferrite and wrap the power cord through it as many times as
will fit. Do that as close as you can to the back of the iMac. The iMac has a
three-conductor power cord, so try and get all of the power cords for your
equipment to a single power strip. This is a start at bonding the grounds,
though it assumes competent construction on all your equipment, not just the
iMac.

In general, Mac power supplies are built to very high standards for safety and
RF interference. We’d all like the standards to be tougher, of course.

The encyclopedic paper on RFI by K9YC recommends the "#31 'biggest clamp-on'
(Fair-Rite #0431177081)”.

http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf

Your other problem is the OCF dipole. A fundamentally unbalanced antenna is
going to pick up more noise. Put the best quality choke/balun you can buy at
the feed point of that thing. When I put a Balun Designs 1:1 balun on my
(balanced) dipole, the noise dropped by 7 dB. This is the one I used. Their
definition of “QRP” is 250 W. Their QRO baluns handle either 3 kW or 5 kW.

You've used "star" grounding around the KX3. Try bonding everything to
everything - you want to provide a low-impedance parallel path from case to
case everywhere there is a connection. So, there should be a bond between the
soundcard and the iMac and the soundcard and power supply. Also the iMac and
soundcard to the PX3. Your diagram should look more like a spider web.

Are the interconnecting cables grounded to the chassis or the circuit board?

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3/PX3] Bonding

2016-06-05 Thread Don Wilhelm

Joel,

Good progress.
Yes, the roofing filter is not usable with the 8kHz shift engaged. This
is not a firmware problem, it is a hardware problem. Think of it this
way - the "IF" for the KX3 is at baseband (audio frequency range), and
that is where the roofing filter works - in other words, it is an audio
range filter, but installed at the IF rather than in the audio chain.
When the 8kHz shift is engaged, the "IF" changes to 8kHz and that is too
high for the audio range roofing filter.

On the bonding, you are on the right path. Bond along the path of your
audio cables or along the paths of the coax.

You imply that you have several ground rods driven. Unless they are
connected back to the house Utility Ground rod, you may have a safety
issue on your hands.
All ground rods should be connected to the Utility Ground by #6
(minimum) or #4 (preferred) copper wire. See the Safety chapter in the
later ARRL Handbooks.
A fault in the AC wiring of your home or green-wire grounded appliances
can cause a significant potential difference between isolated grounds,
perhaps even lethal.

The RPi has the needed power for this use, and at $35 I can have several

What this thread is showing is that there is a growing number of people who
feel that a RPi is a perfect solution for this use case, and if not that,

I suspect open sourcing the utilities would be a

What I did say was "as a shack computer the idea
of a separate computer unit plus monitor plus
keyboard seems a bit of a kluge." and nothing you
said relates to that statement.

I also said:

"So I just don't get all the enthusiasm for using an RPi (or BBB) as the
shack computer to support the Elecraft utilities, etc. No problem with
Linux (which I can run on the MBAir, and do run on my RPi2), just with the
physical arrangement."

and part of your reply did address that.

But inventing quotations which I did not say: Truly Troubling.

Just now my shack computer is an 11" 2010 MacBook Air with 250GB SSD. It
runs both Windows 10 and OS X 10.11.4, so I can use the many ham apps (such
as EZNEC) unique to Windows and not requiring too much computing power. A
real plus is that it can sit in front of my K3 or KX3 and I can still see
the rig's front panel over the top of the computer's monitor -- and the
monitor is plenty large enough for the digital modes, and the keyboard is
full size.

My most compact RPi set up now is an RP2 with a small keyboard with
trackpad and a 7" HDMI monitor. Due to the separate boxes that takes up
more space than the 11" MacBook Air, while having a smaller-than-normal
keyboard and a screen which is a challenge to use.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/PX3 Linux Utilities for Raspberry

2016-04-08 Thread Brendon Whateley
Phil,

With all due respect, your use case is clearly different from those of us
who are so enthusiastic. I've not had a Windows PC since XP was a new
thing, and I have no interest in going back to Windows. Our house is all
MacBook Pro and various Linux machines, including a growing number of RPi.
So the fact that you are happy with running Windows on a Mac is unrelated
to the fact that I want to dedicate a RPi to the shack duties and have
another in my Go Box so that I can literally grab my KX3 and hit the road
without messing with computer stuff. That way the shack RPi can be
permanently attached to its monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. And the Go Box
can be configured for a small bluetooth keyboard/mouse device I have.

The RPi has the needed power for this use, and at $35 I can have several
for different locations as needed -- something I am not prepared to do with
MacBooks.

What this thread is showing is that there is a growing number of people who
feel that a RPi is a perfect solution for this use case, and if not that,
then some other Linux machine. We are hoping that Elecraft will open source
the utilities so that folks such as myself can help make this a reality.

Commenting on a thread to say "this doesn't apply to me, so I don't see why
anybody else would care" is a little self centered and leads to an
unfortunate tone which is so common in HAM communities -- it discourages
new hams such as myself from getting involved, or asking questions.

Regards,
- Brendon

Both for the pi and x86 Linux.

Or just open source it and it will sort it selves out.

Only thing is. If it's compiled from source by some 3rd party Elecraft can
most certainly not be held responsible for the software bricking your radio
or what ever Elecraft product you are trying to update.

The best thing would be for Elecraft to compile and quality control it
their selves.

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3 Linux Utilities for Raspberry Pi?

2016-04-08 Thread Alan Geller via Elecraft
Please put me on the list of interested KX3 owners. The idea of Elecraft
maintaining and qualifying this software is great,
but there is a lot of it and it will incur costs. However…it could be a
productive and low cost path for Elecraft to evaluate
it’s next product line which could be a more highly integrated computer/RF
system. Even though I have been in this business
most of my life, I am still amazed at the capability one can have for
$35….almost enough for lunch for 2 in Silicon Valley.
