[Elecraft] Knobs!!

2008-11-26 Thread Lynn Lamb, W4NL

K3 and K2 Knobs.

Several years ago someone told me about a Yaesu rubber covered knob which
would be a plus for my beloved K2 main tuning. Don't remember which Yaesu
knob, but could find out if anyone is interested. Anyway, after $16 it was
on the K2 and I've always been happy with it.

I like the K3 main knob better than the original K2 knob, but silly as it
may appear, with a super rig like the K3, I wish it were softer. Don't
laugh! A rubber cover on B would be nice also.

I pulled one of the Orion's main knobs off and placed it on the K3. Nice.
Larger and an okay feel. Ten-Tec only recently has a new softer rubber
cover for the knobs used on the two main knobs for the Orions and perhaps
other equipment, don't know. And in color, glory be!

The original knob is back on the K3 and it may stay unless I can obtain
another Orion knob. But I'm open to anything and the jury is out.

Told you this was silly since the K3 will not be more outstanding with a
gold plated knob nor is the Orion a better rig with a large soft rubber
knob. But boys will play silly games, won't we?

OR is it a game? A game to want our toys, especially the K3 toy's main
point of contact (the one we will touch, fondle and caress for years to
come!), to have as good a feel as possible? I'm not rich, but would find a
way to have the BEST darn rubber covered knob on the planet. Deep thoughts.

[Elecraft] Knobs

2009-07-31 Thread Dan
I've been reading the posts about knobs for several months, and I was trying to
resist the temptation to voice my objection to the knobs on my K3 (#3020).
After all, I decided on the K3 because of it's advertised and acclaimed
performance, not the cosmetics or knobs.

The situation though, reminds me of the line in the original Mash movie
(adapted for K3 owners): "Just because we're K3 owners, doesn't mean we're
barbarians". Translated: we should be able to own one of the best radios ever
made AND have knobs that both look good and work properly. No, I wouldn't
spend $200, but I would spend enough to make a substantial improvement.
Actually, some of the alternatives can also be very expensive. For example,
I've considered buying a Pro III just to impress visitors to the shack
(beautiful display and nice knobs). Of course when they would leave, I would
turn off the Pro III, and turn on the K3.

Prior to reading any of the complaints, when I was assembling the K3 and came
upon the "nested knobs", I couldn't believe that they didn't have brass
inserts. I thought, "they sure must have come a long way in injection molded
plastics to be able to make nested knobs with the necessary dimension controls
to assure proper operation". I was also surprised to see that the
shift-width-speed-cmp knobs were a push-on design, and they looked like they
were too short for the length of the shafts.

I tried to keep an open mind, figuring that these guys must know what they are
doing--they've produced a radio that some very experienced hams are raving
about.

Well, after assembly was complete.

1) The nested knobs would not operate unless they were "un-nested", due to
concentricity problems. Brass inserts would solve the problem, because the
brass is drilled after assembly of the knob, assuring concentricity.

2) The shift-width-speed-cmp knobs still don't look right to me. Also, I had a
problem with them falling off. Elecraft rushed me a new set of knobs, but the
problem continued. I finally but a small dab of contact cement on each knob,
to keep them from falling off. I would prefer a knob with a brass insert and a
set screw, as opposed to using glue.

Group Dynamics at the Radio Factories?
If an engineer at one of the major brand radio companies submitted a design
with theses knobs, he would be beaten into submission at one of the many stages
of design review. While a smaller company like Elecraft can be very agile, and
can respond quickly to customer needs there can also be a disadvantage when a
key man is invested in a marginal design concept. Junior engineers don't make
eye contact, or stare off in a different direction, maybe whistling. You may
hear comments like, "If you know what's good for you, don't say anything to the
old man about those knobs."--just kidding, Wayne.

The Missing Link?
In a few hundred years when archeologists are examining the remains of old
radios, one of the pressing questions will be:
Were software defined radios developed because we lost the ability to make
knobs, or did we loose the ability to make knobs because of software defined
radios? We wouldn't want the K3 to be known as the missing link, would we?

Respectfully submitted,
Dan - W4TQ (ham for 50 years!)

[Elecraft] knobs

2009-08-03 Thread William Carver
I haven't even received my K3 (kit) yet and already I'm all riled up
about its knobs (HI).

James, if you have something you like better for knobs and you change
them, more power to you. If someone doesn't like the color of the
cabinet and wants to take an airbrush to it and paint it Porsche Torch
Red, great. It wouldn't offend me . Come to think of it, might be
stunning painted red!

And if someone loves the feel and appearance of the stock knobs that is
great too.

Changing the knobs is not something that should raise anyone's blood
pressure, one way or t'other. Particularly cosmetic things are just a
matter of opinion, and if a knob fractures that's a good excuse to try
something different if it strikes your fancy. And who needs an excuse?
Like any other modification or personalization, its interesting to
see/hear about.

Viva la difference.

I made a nice (IMHO) rubber covering for the knob on my K2 by cutting out a
short sleeve from a bicycle innner tube. That is stretched onto the
perimeter of the K2 knob. Do it carefully and it looks like it came that
way. I have no problems with the VFO knobs on my K3. I love my K3 (and

Re: [Elecraft] Knobs

2009-07-31 Thread Charles Johnson
Dan,
I just finished assembling my new K3 #3281 and had the same issue with
the concentric knobs. They wobbled badly enough that they could not be
nested together and didn't feel right to me. I solved the problem by
making a bushing for the knobs by wrapping a single layer of thin
packing tape, the cheap kind that Office Depot sells, around the shafts.
More than one layer was too much thickness. Now the knobs turn without
wobbling and are nested together as they should be. I wrote Wayne about
this, and he passed it on to one of his engineers, but have not heard
back from him. I said it would be nice if the knobs had metal inserts.
Otherwise, I am very pleased with the fit and finish of the K3. I did
not have any issues with the smaller knobs. In fact, they were a tight fit.

I have K3 #1029. The nested knobs are perfectly concentric to my eye.
The Shift/Width knobs don't fall off and are not too short. None have
cracked in one year of almost daily service.

Perhaps there have been some incompatible production variations along
the way. I don't doubt you are having a problem but have to disagree
with your comments about design. The original design seems perfectly
adequate if #1029 is any indication.

Re: [Elecraft] Knobs

2009-08-01 Thread Dan
Hi Drew,

Let's differentiate between an engineering concept and a manufacturing
design.

The engineering concept of these knobs is certainly reasonable. For
example, when nested knobs nest properly, that's just fine.--they look good
and work as planned. Great concept!

A design that is suitable for manufacturing is quite a different thing,
however. Obviously, the goal is for the knobs to work properly not just on
your K3, but on ALL other K3's as well.

The design dimension tolerances must be specified in view of the
manufacturing precision which is available to implement the design concept.
Some of us think that a different design concept could be mass produced with
more precision so that all of the knobs work properly on all of the K3's.

I'm sure there are several who will be glad to hear that this is my last
comment on knobs--honest.

73,
Dan - W4TQ

ps:
The superb fit of the K3 chassis/enclosure parts demonstrates that there is
someone at Elecraft who thoroughly understands manufacturing design
tolerances. Congratulations on a great job in that area of the mechanical
design.

In my case, the original knobs were perfectly concentric in that the shaft
holes were centered properly. Unfortunately however, those were the ones
that cracked. Both sets of replacements that I received from Elecraft had
off-centered shaft holes. This is the reason why I ended up purchasing the
machined knobs from Mouser.

leave, I would turn off the Pro III, and turn on the K3.

Prior to reading any of the complaints, when I was assembling the K3 and
came upon the "nested knobs", I couldn't believe that they didn't have brass
inserts. I thought, "they sure must have come a long way in injection
molded plastics to be able to make nested knobs with the necessary dimension
controls to assure proper operation". I was also surprised to see that the
shift-width-speed-cmp knobs were a push-on design, and they looked like they
were too short for the length of the shafts.

I tried to keep an open mind, figuring that these guys must know what they
are doing--they've produced a radio that some very experienced hams are
raving about.

Also, I
had a problem with them falling off. Elecraft rushed me a new set of knobs,
but the problem continued. I finally but a small dab of contact cement on
each knob, to keep them from falling off. I would prefer a knob with a
brass insert and a set screw, as opposed to using glue.

Group Dynamics at the Radio Factories?
If an engineer at one of the major brand radio companies submitted a design
with theses knobs, he would be beaten into submission at one of the many
stages of design review. While a smaller company like Elecraft can be very
agile, and can respond quickly to customer needs there can also be a
disadvantage when a key man is invested in a marginal design concept.
Junior engineers don't make eye contact, or stare off in a different
direction, maybe whistling. You may hear comments like, "If you know what's
good for you, don't say anything to the old man about those knobs."--just
kidding, Wayne.

Just like kids jacking up their cars, cutting holes in the hoods, and
painting flames behind the wheels. THEY think it looks neat but later they
can't even give the goofy looking thing away.

I like my tuning knob to spin too so I just built it not touching the felt.
I scan with my finger or thumb just touching the face of the knob, not in
the dimple, they don't work for me. Works just fine. Does not need to be
heavier, bigger, shiny, lighted, flashing, heated, pink, or polka-dot.

[Elecraft] Knobs and K3

I had a knob split on my K3. Elecraft replaced it right away. In the mail
by the time I hung up the phone. Case closed. You can bet behind the
scenes Wayne is really annoyed busting mfr chops about getting knobs that
don't split without having to raise the price 200 bux for machined knobs.
What did the guy say, a little expensive? Yeah, just a little...

It's a radio. I want to hear stuff.

I can get knobs on stuff that doesn't hear. If I want to get tactile, I
turn on the old 75A3. Nuthin modern FEELS like the old Collins gear. Heavy
metal, R390A, wonderful gear mechanisms.

But none of them HEAR like the K3. K3 is the first out-of-the-box modern
radio that I am sure will always hear CW better than a R390A. But the
original 1954 purchase price (this was the *reduced cost* version of the
R390) in current dollars would be around $24,000.

You can get real nice knobs on a $24,000 radio.

I like my FT 900 knob (see my website www.qsl.net/w3fpr), but this is the
one that needs the added 'drag' pad thickness, and has no depression for a
'finger-dimple'.

I have seen the rubber tire from the Yaesu FT-900 knob placed aroung the
stock K2 knob - it takes a wee bit of stretch, but it fits, and looks good.
That also would have solved my real problem which is irritation of my thumb
from the rather sharp front corner of the stock K2 knob - I just don't use a
finger dimple even if it is available, each to his own.

[Elecraft] Knobs full circle

2004-08-11 Thread Don Brown
Hi

I think this is interesting. A few years ago everyone was complaining about the
K2 knob and looking fore something to replace it. It got to the point that
Yaesu parts had to stock extra knobs because of all the requests for
replacements used on K2's. I know Elecraft even looked into having a precision
machined knob made available as an option.

Now with the addition of a little $5 plastic stick on finger dimple it looks
like most like the original knob the best. It just shows the wisdom of the
Elecraft bunch in selecting the knob in the first place. I guess we have gone
full circle on the knob.

With Lucas electrics?? Hey, they made them until about 1952. I lusted
for one but bought a Royal Enfield Meteor instead because they were $400
cheaper.

Well, to me, HRD is Hood River Distilleries, and you really want to stay
away from their stuff.

Gee, that sounds a lot like my MG-B, Lucas electrics,
SU carbs and all. There is nothing more exciting than
having a throttle linkage break as you're trying to
 accelerate onto a freeway!

[Elecraft] Knobs for the K3

2010-04-23 Thread k9sd
The machined knobs look great...also you can get a Collins S-line knob and
remove the
skirt so it will fit on the K3...

Then take some lead weights or BB's or what ever ...place them inside the
Collins knob and glue them down..

Be careful to keep everything symmetrical in the placement of the BB's and you
are good to go..

Also I will have my K3 with me at Dayton if you want to look at the remote
tuning knob..it would be my pleasure..

I am going to dinner with some of the SNS folks and if they don't mind I will
bring it with me..It will be a proto and
am looking for any suggestions on the completed modelMy knob will be
connected by a cord to the K3...price should be
less than $200...hopefully a lot less...

Tom N0SS I will call you this week...you are #1 if you still want it..

Thanks for reading this

Life is good

And those of us who are cheap/poor can champion the cause of rubber bands!

The plus for the rubber bands is that they require no part number.

[Elecraft] knobs - becomes Custom clearing in France

2009-12-07 Thread Raymond METZGER
Hi,

Your vision of the delivery timing in France doesn't match at all my own
experience. My K3, sent at 4 p.m. local time in California, has been
delivered by UPS 2 days later, 9 a.m. Paris time.

Smaller items, sent by Aptos through the US Mail, have always (4 or five
times) arrived in less than 1 week.

Think positive !
