[Elecraft] P3 SVGA card repair

2021-12-08 Thread Dave Sublette
Good afternoon,

My P3 was just returned from Elecraft, where I sent it for repair
(lightning). The SVGA card was in the box with paperwork saying the U502
voltage regulator was replaced, but the unit was unrepairable.

Is there anyone on the list who would be willing to try and repair it? I
know there was a discussion recently and I saved it (somewhere). Wish I
could find it.

Re: [Elecraft] P3/SVGA Macro and USB

2020-02-29 Thread Dave Cole

Hi Dave,

Using the setup described at:

https://www.nk7z.net/adding-external-keypad-k3/

I have been unable to swap to a KBD from the Genovation. I direct swap
fails, so prior to purchasing a switch, do a manual replace to insure it
works for you...

Macro Loading is by hand, using that God awful editor that lives in the P3.

I was thinking of writing an editor for the file the P3 generates, but
as it is Elecraft hardware, (and I, not having the specs for it), have
decided to not do that, so I don't break the hardware inadvertently.

I seem to remember a Macro Editor for the P3 being promised as well, but
for the life of me, I can't find the reference to it now...

You are correct, it is a PITA to enter 48 macros by hand...

But, hacing the radio macro set available at a sngle button press has
been a Godsend for pile up operations... I have a macro spread sheet
there, that has a "Split + 5", macro, so when I hear VP8PJ, I SPOT it,
then hit the "SPLIT + 5" button, that moves the DX station to the left
side of the P3, opens the bandwidth of the P3 up to 6 KHz., and makes
VFO B the transmit VFO, leaving the DX station on the left side. Makes
it a snap to find a hole and work them. Using that method, iot took me
three button presses, and a few tuning adjustments to get them on 40...

I can tell you from experience, that using the Genovation, and it's 48
macro launch buttons makes using the radio a breeze. I had occasion to
use a friends K3, without a Genovation, and it felt crippling...

Please let me know what you find for Macro Editors, or external
keyboards, I'll add it to the web page on the Genovation...

that they are saved with the configuration but there is no ability to
edit the 50 macro locations.  Back on 6/11/2018 Paul had stated "...The
next BETA release of P3/SVGA firmware will include the ability to
export/import macros from/to the SVGA just like the PX3." but I am
unable to find any BETA releases since that time.   The P3 Utility is
limited to only 16 Macros so that doesn't handle the problem. The
capability that the PX3 has for exporting/importing/editing of macros
would be extremely helpful.

3) Using the the P3 MENU -> SVGA menu->  SVGA Usav you can save the SVGA
state via USB stick which creates a file "SVGASET.sav" file name.  I am
able to open this file with a Notepad++ and see that it does contain
macro information but I cannot find any information on the file format.
File contains a lot of NUL characters and appears to have 3 sections.
Has anyone decoded this format and knows how to safely edit?  The PX3
Programmers Manual shows the format for the PX3 files and it appears
that the macro section may be the same but looking for more definitive
information.

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA Display issue

2020-01-05 Thread David Winarsky
Hi all,

I just finished installing and setting up the SVGA option for my P3. All
appears to be working fine, except the spectrum is displayed differently on the
monitor than on the P3 itself. The signals sit above the horizontal divider
rather than immediately at it. When adjusting the ref level, they pop back
down to the correct location where they sit at the divider but then begin
creeping up again. This makes adjusting the spectrum properly for the
waterfall very difficult. As I mentioned, this does not happen on the P3
display.

It seems like this has something to do with the averaging, but I’m at a loss
for how to correct it.

External display with fill enabled:

External display with fill disabled:
https://imgur.com/71dT7pJ

P3 display (notice no bar and the signals sit at the horizontal divider instead
of above):

Appreciate any advice.

2019-10-17 Thread donovanf
Hi Bill,

Elecraft's web site does a remarkably poor job marketing the
significantly improved performance of the P3SVGA compared
to the basic P3.

The P3SVGA is NOT simply an SVGA monitor adapter, its a
much higher performance FFT processor and SVGA adapter.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Compare pages 11 and 12 in
N6TV's presentation:

Why put a small image of the P3 on a big monitor. Just look at the small P3

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA Display Waterfall Contrast (Mark / WU6R)

2019-06-23 Thread Mark Wheeler via Elecraft

I've recently noticed that I have almost no waterfall displaying on my 24" monitor
which makes using the SVGA feature almost useless.  I thought maybe it was because of
poor band conditions, but now I'm wondering if there is something that needs to be
adjusted...  I used to have a near exact replica of the P3 display showing on my 24"
monitor.  I did swap out and connect another monitor and I'm still missing the waterfall
contrast.  The P3 SVGA resolution is set to 1920 x 1080, which is where I've always had
it set.  I haven't adjusted any other settings lately.

Is there a way to adjust the SVGA contrast that the P3 SVGA board is
outputting?  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

narrow modes.

Not so difficult at all, using the methods I outlined in a previous
post. I have successfully used it on RTTY, CW, PSK31 an a steady
carrier. Most of that data is summarized in this Power Point pdf. Most
of these data are from the SVGA.

http://k9yc.com/P3_Spectrum_Measurements.pdf

Note -- TXEQ in my K3s are set maximum rolloff of the 50, 100, and 200
Hz octave bands and some rolloff of the 400 Hz band. This accounts for
the difference in the shape of the top of the curve between my K3s and
other rigs tested.

For CW, I transmit a long series of dits, put the P3 in peak mode, and
accumulate peaks. When the display stops changing, I freeze it, use the
cursor to manually log enough points to define the curve on both sides
of the carrier, starting at -20dB carrier and every 5 dB until the data
falls off screen. I then save the screen to a file.

I've done essentially the same thing with RTTY and PSK.  For SSB, my
test signal is bandwidth limited Pink Noise. Pink Noise is widely used
as an audio test signal because both spectral balance and dynamics are a
good first approximation of speech. Pink Noise is defined as equal power
per percentage bandwidth, whereas white noise is equal voltage per Hz.
Pink noise can be though of as white noise with a 3dB per octave
rolloff. That's not easy to generate -- an RC rolloff is 6 dB/octave.

And this important comment. NC0B uses White Noise as a source. This is
VERY BAD practice, because it puts nearly all of the modulation above
the voice spectrum, and greatly de-emphasizes speech. I've corrected him
on this three times, first as long as five years ago, yet he continues
to do it wrong. The importance of this is that GOOD audio processing is
designed for the spectrum and dynamics of speech, so any audio test
signal should approximate speech as closely as possible. Rob is a great
engineer and does ham radio a great service with his testing, but he
fails to even attempt to understand the difference between RF and audio.

As to my credentials to say this -- I spent 40 years in pro audio, with
much of my work directed to sound systems for both speech
intelligibility and music. For 20 years, I've been a member of the AES
Standards Committee, and of Working Groups on Speech Intellibility.
About ten years ago, I was elected a Fellow of the AES.

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA schematics and usb port

2018-05-23 Thread Jim Shepherd
Hi,
The SVGA schematics were missing at
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/P3_svga_D_sch.pdf...
I was trying to see if the 5 Vdc was available at the keyboard port to
drive a SVGA to HDMI converter or if it needed to be turned on in software.
I could not find this information in the manual.

Other than not having power, plugging the video adapter in did not seem to
affect the operation of the P3, and when I plugged the adapter into a USB
power adapter, I got the full display on the monitor. I'm looking at using
a split screen at an upcoming special event...

Whilst it's not completely accurate, it is very easy to approximate
the "occupied bandwidth" of reasonably strong signals using the P3.
Set average to maximum and look at the points 20 dB down on either
side. This will over estimate the bandwidth of a signal depending
on the peak to average ratio of the given modulation (e.g., level of
clipping of an SSB signal) but still provides a useful first order
approximation.

The greater difficulty is in measuring the occupied bandwidth of very
narrow modes (e.g. JT65, JT9, FT8, RTTY or even CW) due to the 2 KHz
minimum span of the P3 ... a 500 Hz span would be better for measuring
narrow modes.

Mike,

I don't think I have seen this as a suggestion so far in the thread.

It is important that you dress the cables for the SVGA option exactly as
shown in the installation manual.

If they do not want to stay in place, use a ty-wrap around the cables.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA interference -

2018-02-11 Thread mjpilgrim
I am almost overwhelmed by all the very thoughtful suggestions. Here's what
I know so far.

I had previously performed the idea of turning off all items in the room
except for the radio and P3, but the reported symptom remains. I then
switched my antenna switch to the grounded position, and the problem goes
away. Now my suspicion is that my rfi is created from outside my
house. My antenna system consists of two end fed long wires, 90% opposed to
each other, and a minimal vertical out behind the house.

The RFI from all antennas is approximately equal in amplitude as I select
them one at a time (with the vertical slightly less but I attribute that to
the relative poor receive sensitivity on that antenna. Nonetheless, the RFI
on that antenna is quite noticeable.

I hesitate to bother for additional thoughts at this point, at least until I
can asses what possible causes external to my house might be at play, and
now to pay close attention to whether or not it changes depending on the
hour of the day. For example, at first notice of this problem I sensed that
everything was normal until for example, the beginning of the work day. I
soon discounted that thought however, when I realized it was happening late
at night (as was the case up until I shut down last night around 11pm). And
it affects only 20 Meters. All other bands are viewed normally.

Perhaps once I can capture and submit a picture for review here, someone
might be able to make a little more sense out of what I'm trying to
describe. If I can say it this way, it reminds me of a TV commercial
where folks are in a Gymnasium doing a strength regimen involving holding a
rope in each hand and making it serpentine by moving the arms up and down.
Only that sine wave of baseline noise moves from S-2 to as high as S-7 when
using my best antenna.. I'll try to get a picture attached later
this afternoon.

Thanks for the help so far.
Mike, K5MP

I wonder if this discussion and suggested ribbon clips address my issue. I
acquired my K3 this past summer and then a P3 off of eBay shortly
thereafter. I installed the SVGA adapter a couple months ago and I have a
problem which sounds similar to what is described in this thread. For lack
of a better description let me say this symptom happens only on
20Meters. as I view my spectrum now from 14.250 to 14.350 the noise
floor rests basically around S-2 across the entire band, revealing a few
transmitted ham conversations, My center frequency on the scope is 14.300
and at this moment I see occasional noise peaks rising up to as high as S-5
in two or three instances approximately 10khz wide, and at times 20 khz or
wider. These noise peaks are not consistent with any observed or detected
human voice transmission. At times I can see a very broad band of noise on
the waterfall which spans the entirety of the floating noise floor. The
same observation occurs when I am tuned down in the CW portion of the band.

I don't recall if this observation was present prior to adding the SVGA
adapter, and I've not thought about opening the P3 to inspect or move any
cables.

I know this symptom can best be demonstrated with a photo, so if that would
be beneficial, I will be happy to oblige. Just let me know who needs to see

This is certainly a very annoying issue I wish to resolve. I'm open to any

Mike,

You didn't mention if you had a large monitor connected but
consider that the noise you "see" may come from it or a TV
your have connected.

Do you see the pattern on the P3 also?

Watch the P3 screen and turn the large monitor off and see if
the signal disappears. Many of them do make a lot of electrical
"noise" - particularly the screen light source and very particularly
plasma displays.

Re: [Elecraft] P3/SVGA Digital terminal questions

2017-04-18 Thread n6hz
Hi Ken,

1) That is correct. The P3/SVGA does not actually decode any RF. All that
is done inside the radio and you must choose between any of built-in modes,
such as FSK-D, PSK-D or CW.

2) The manual instructs you to turn off text display ONLY if you're going to
use the K3 or P3 Utility's data terminal mode. Text decode on the radio
will need to be turned on (see #1 above).

3) The P3/SVGA setup screen which is accessed via Ctrl-Alt-S on an attached
keyboard is used to set a variety of settings pertaining to the keyboard
aspect of the system. For example, setting the foreground and background
colors for the text window on the SVGA screen. Also setting up the text
transmit mode, i.e. send on Enter key press, space bar key press, etc.
This controls when the text is sent to the radio to be transmitted, for
example, when the Enter key is pressed, or the space bar etc.

If you need additional help or have any questions, please email me directly.
My email is pauls at you know where dot com. (elecraft)

Kindly,

Paul N6HZ

[Elecraft] P3/SVGA Digital terminal questions

2017-04-17 Thread Ken K6MR
I'm trying to assist a local with his K3S/P3/SVGA using the P3 terminal. I
don't have the SVGA so trying to piece together the info using the manuals. A
few questions for all you P3 Terminal Digital mode users:

1. The P3 terminal setup looks to be identical for all modes. Mode is
apparently set by selecting FSK-D, PSK-D or CW from the K3. Correct?

2. It says to keep text decode off on the K3. Does the Threshold adjustment
have any effect? I've never used text decode. Is Auto good enough?

3. It looks like the easiest way to set everything up is Ctrl-Alt-S on the
keyboard and adjust from there. Any reason to get into the 'regular' menus
through the Menu button?

Thanks for any pointers you can pass on.

Hi Adrian,
The only way to view transmitted cw on the P3 transmit window would be by using
an USB keyboard plugged into the rear of the P3. Paddles will not work. 73,

Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA works, but text stops

2017-01-09 Thread KC6CNN
Okay very strange problem.
The keyboard would quit working but showed it had power to it.
Then finally the waterfall stopped.
I switched to dummy load to make sure it was not a rf problem, still did not
work.
I did a complete reset and still did not fix the problem.
I took the case off of the P3 and took the P3SVGA board off which houses the
USB.
I cleaned everything up and reseated the board and put it all back together.
Bingo. Something fixed it. It was either the cleaning up all contacts, or
seating them.
The P3 is back running like a champ.
This P3 does so much more than I knew it did.
Okay listed it here just in case someone else has these strange symptoms.
Thanks
Gerald

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA works, but text stops

2017-01-08 Thread KC6CNN
Okay today I was working with the P3 as to my earlier post hihi.
I was sending psk, rtty and cw with the keyboard connected to the P3.
All of a sudden the keyboard stops responding to any key or command.
The P3 and SVGA are still showing the bands and waterfalls and all is
functioning right except for the keyboard will not type.
I have done this before with no problems, I have not changed anything else
except adding a few more control alt t macros.

I have reloaded the latest firmware and went and checked all my settings.
I turned the P3 off and back on and it works for a couple of minutes and
then stops again.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA Feature Request

2016-06-15 Thread KD3RF
It would be great if the VGA adapter showed tic marks and frequency across
the top or bottom of the display screen every 10 kHz or so like in this
mocked-up picture.

Scaling of the frequency display should change as bandwith is changed. For
example, if looking at full band, scaling would be a tic mark every 20 Khz.
If looking at a 50 kHz slice, scaling should be a tic mark every 2 kHz.

Could something like this be accomplished with a software patch??

Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA problem

2016-05-15 Thread Dave Cole
Hi Bill,
No, no external monitor is used...  You should see a message pop up on
the P3 screen, indicating a USB device has been plugged in, when you
plug in a keyboard.  If this does not happen, and you are sure you are
using a dumb keyboard, not a multimedia keyboard, then something is
either not set up correctly, or broken.  If setup might be the issue,
look in Cady's book, if broken, give Elecraft a call...  It has been
too long for me to remember if setup can break this...

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA problem

2016-05-15 Thread Bill
I installed the SVGA board in my P3 and am unable to access the terminal
mode. In effect, the P3 operates as it always did prior to the SVGA
installation - nothing is new. I have installed the latest firmware -
for the entire station.

I only bought the SVGA for macro uses - hence, did not plan to have an
external monitor installed. Is an external monitor required for this
purpose?

It should work as long as it has one of the P3/SVGA's supported screen

You can turn the display brightness to zero with the "LCD Brt" menu item.

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA questions

2016-04-22 Thread Mike Dodd
After being disappointed by the P3's inability to display decode CW and
data text (as the PX3 does) without the SVGA option (that's definitely
the BOO of the week!), I am now searching for a tiny monitor that won't
wipe out half my remaining desk space.

I have a couple of questions:

1. I found some 6" LCD monitors commonly used with Raspberry Pi devices.
If a monitor is specified as VGA, will the P3 SVGA option drive it OK?
The user manual seems to imply that it will, with the various display

[Elecraft] P3/SVGA 1.60/1.34 General Release, Now Available

2016-03-24 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
P3/SVGA 1.60/1.34 Firmware is now available as a general release. Please be
sure to download, install and use the latest version of P3 Utility which can
be found here:
http://www.elecraft.com/software/P3/P3_Utility_Setup_1_16_3_15.exe

Currently our tech writer is in the process of updating the P3/SVGA manual.
In the meantime, please refer to the release notes which I have also
included below. The main features of this release are the ability to
include P3 commands in SVGA keyboard macros, new #RCF (relative center
frequency) command, support for the K3S preamp/attenuator stages, as well as
several important bug fixes.

Very 73,
Paul n6hz

MCU 01.60 / 3-21-2016

Version 01.60 requires SVGA firmware 01.34 to support all SVGA features.

* P3 commands in keyboard macros: Added support to allow P3 commands to be
embedded in SVGA keyboard macros. When entering a keyboard macro using a
USB keyboard attached to the P3/SVGA, P3 commands can now be intermixed with
K3 commands by preceding the with the '#' character. Example: set up a
macro to set the K3 to PSK31, frequency 14.070, P3 span of 100 kHz, fixed
tune enabled:
FA0001407;MD6;DT3;#SPN001000;#FXT1;

* SVGA keyboard macros as function keys: The first 8 SVGA keyboard macros
can now be executed from the 8 front panel function keys. First, using a
keyboard, program the macro and make sure to save it into one of the first 8
locations (mem 1 - 8). Then on the P3, press the MENU button and using the
encoder, select the SVGA menu and press the encoder to enter. Then using the
encoder, choose "Macro 1" through "Macro 8", then press the function key
(short tap or long hold) to map the macro to the function key.

* Enable/disable TX sensing at the TxMon coupler: Added TxSensEn to TxMon
sub-menu. This allows enabling/disabling of transmit sensing at the
coupler. For K3 and K3S users, TxSensEn can be set to "disabled", which
will use the serial connection from the K3 to determine the TX state.
Setting TxSensEn to "enabled" will use forward power sensed at the TxMon
coupler to determine TX state (useful for non-Elecraft radios).

* New #RCF command: "Relative Center Frequency" applies an offset to the
center frequency based on the passed argument. Usage: #RCFsnn; Where:
's' is the sign + or -, nn is the offset in Hz. For example, if the P3
is set to a 30 kHz span and you would like to position the cursor on the
left edge: #RCF+015000; Using #RCF without any arguments returns the
difference in Hz between the center frequency and the vfo frequency.

* K3S attenuator support: The P3 now properly scales the display when the
four-step attenuator in the K3S is enabled.

* SWR meter blanked: Both the analog and digital SWR displays are now
blanked whenever the transmit power is too low to give a valid reading.

* Serial #DSM command: The Display Mode (#DSM) command now controls the
Transmit Monitor's power/SWR meter display as well as enabling and disabling
the waterfall window. #DSM0 = Spectrum display only, #DSM1 = Spectrum +
waterfall, #DSM2 = Spectrum + meters, #DSM3 = Spectrum + waterfall + meters.

* New #FON command: The display font can now be selected via a serial
command. #FON0 = 5 x 7 pixels, #FON1 = 7 x 11 pixels, #FON2 = 9 x 14
pixels.

* New #XCV command: The transceiver type can now be selected via a serial
command. #XCV00 = "K3", #XCV01 = User-defined, #XCV03 = 455 kHz IF, etc.
The command uses the same number order as in the "Xcvr Sel" menu item.

* Transceiver definition bug fix - Exiting: When exiting the "Xcvr Def"
menu page, if the user-defined transceiver is already selected, it will
reflect the new values inmmediately, rather than having to re-select it.

* Transceiver definition bug fix - IF Invert: The USER transceiver that is
defined in the "Xcvr Def" menu item may now specify "Not inverted" IF tuning
even if the "K3" control language is selected.

* SVGA resolution / main waterfall bug fix: The main waterfall height had
been switching to the default value after changing SVGA resolution.

* VFO B cursor = VFO DATA A bug: The VFO B cursor had been matching the VFO

Hi Ken,

Yes, the USB keyboard is not active when not in data display mode. I
realize that folks are using the Genovation keypad as means of
executing macros to control the K3 (and soon the P3), however the USB
keyboard port was designed for data.

Hi Ken,

I am not familiar with the USB switch but if it is electronic and not
mechanical there could be an issue since the SVGA USB port is limited as to
what it can support. For example it does not support a hub or really
anything except a USB thumb drive and/or keyboard.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - SVGA USB Serendipitous Solution

2016-01-27 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Ken,

I don't understand what you mean by 'toggle a USB device'. The P3/SVGA
board will enumerate a USB keyboard or thumb drive even if the SVGA en is
turned off (the display is turned off) OR data display mode is turned off.
I just checked. You can verify that by opening up the P3 and looking on
the SVGA card. Whenever a USB device is correctly enumerated, the LED
toward the connector will light solid.

Kind regards,

Paul

[Elecraft] P3 - SVGA USB Serendipitous Solution

2016-01-26 Thread Ken Widelitz
It seems that if you toggle a USB device on the P3, it loses its knowledge
of the USB device and doesn't recognize the device when it is toggled back
UNLESS the SVGA is in data display mode. IMHO this is a firmware bug.

Re: [Elecraft] P3/SVGA help..

2016-01-15 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
There are LEDs on the P3 front panel and on the SVGA board, both should be
blinking. If you plug a keyboard or USB thumbdrive into the SVGA board, you
should see another LED light up on the SVGA board.

The next thing to try is a parameter reset on the P3. Do that holding down
the MENU key and then tapping the POWER key. This will reinitialize any
settings so you may first want to save the P3 configuration using the P3
Utility.

Next check the revisions of the all the FPGA files located on the SVGA
board. You mentioned that you upgraded the firmware, but maybe one of these
files could be corrupted (they control the video chip). Rotate the encoder
to the SVGA sub-menu and then enter it. Rotate the encoder to select SVGA
FW and select using a push of the encoder. You should see 1.04 in FPGA 0 to
FPGA 4.

If none of that works, email me directly at Elecraft. My email address is
pauls at you know where dot com.

Kind regards,

Paul

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA Self changing tracking mode

2015-10-30 Thread Rick WA6NHC

Hello all,

I'm seeing an issue on the SVGA side of the P3.

In order to utilize the screen space more effectively I often use the
CENTER control to shift my TX frequency to the left side up the display
(when the DX is listening up) to show those calling on the right side of
the display. [The alternative is to use the SPAN control, but much of
the screen is under utilized.]

This works great until I QSY or adjust the RX frequency. At that point
the SVGA display no longer synchs with the P3 display so this is limited
to only the SVGA portion. The shaded areas shift to anywhere on the
SVGA display (1024x768), sometimes even swapping sides of the display.
I have to revert to watching the P3 only.

It stays with an incorrect display on the SVGA until I tap the
fixed/track tune in the menu. Then it works properly, until the next
time I slide the display to the side.

I've not seen this mentioned on the list. Can someone else confirm this
behavior? It appears to be a bug.

I've reloaded the entire P3 firmware package, this situation remains.
The P3 is functioning properly, this is solely an SVGA issue.

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA Self changing tracking mode

2015-10-30 Thread Rick WA6NHC
More data points: I usually use FixMode set to 'static' and FixTrack
set to 'Fixed tune mode'. I don't know how that factors in... It may
be another cause, but by cycling FixTrack, I can get it to display
properly AFTER I recenter the display to start over again.

This happens consistently here. Thanks for checking your station.

This is a known issue and on the P3/SVGA bug list. Basically what is

[Elecraft] P3/SVGA Firmware 1.54/1.25 now available as general release

2015-09-11 Thread Paul Saffren
P3/SVGA firmware 1.54/1.25 is now available as a general release. This
means you can simply use the P3 utility and press the "Copy new files
from Elecraft" to download the firmware to your computer.
*It's recommended that all customers and particularly those owning an
SVGA card, download and install the latest P3 Utility (1.15.8.28). **

*
Release notes for 1.54/1.25 :

*MCU 01.54 / 8-14-2015*

* Added new transmit monitor maximum power meter scales of 160W and 1600W.

* When the P3 with transmit monitor is connected to a K3, the P3 goes
into transmit mode only when commanded by the K3 and not when RF power
is detected. This prevents false triggering when RF power is present from
another transmitter using a nearby antenna.

Bug fixes:

* Noise blanker settings are sent immediately to the SVGA upon band changes.

* Noise blanker settings are saved in non-volatile memory when set via
RS-232 commands.

* Reference level labels are properly rounded.

* The SVGA WfEn "Track main" mode name was changed to "Same as
main".This mode now initializes properly upon power-up and menu items to
adjust the SVGA waterfall values are inhibited when in this mode.

* The SVGA waterfall height is limited to avoid interfering with the NB
icon when adjusted via the main waterfall menu item while in "Same as
main" mode.

* On the main display, menu labels are prevented from impinging on the
waterfall area if the transmit monitor meters are enabled, the function
key labels are enabled, and the waterfall size is set too high.

* Prevents the possibility that FN1 could get re-defined during a
firmware update.

* Eliminates extraneous text on the display when activating certain menu
functions when the TX monitor coupler is not present or the SVGA
waterfall is set to "Same as main".

* When no K3 is present, the transmit monitor uses a higher trigger
level with the VHF coupler to sense when to go to transmit mode, in
order to prevent false triggering.

*P3SVGA 01.25 / 08-19-2015*

**

* Added Noise Blanker.

* Developed a faster method of detecting K3 transmit/receive state changes.

* Added data terminal ‘send on space’ to the available data TX modes.

* Added replay of keyboard input using Ctrl-Alt-R.Ctrl-C will clear
replay buffer.

* Added ‘\r’ to embed a CR in text message. Use ‘\\’ to send a single ‘\’.

* Added ‘\c’ to embed an incrementing serial counter in a text
message.Clearing/presetting counter may be done in the setup screen
(Ctrl-Alt-S).

* Text messages sent in data terminal mode now respect the mode setting
(VOX, CR, ^T).

* Fixed a bug in data terminal mode that was causing the time-out to not
reset correctly.

* Fixed a bug in data terminal mode that was causing non-existent
characters to be retrieved and sent. Also fixes a bug of missing characters.

* Fixed a problem that caused some SVGA boards to not initialize
correctly from P3 commands at boot.

* Added waterfall cursors, these display exactly as they do on the P3
screen.

Paul

2015-09-11 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
One other feature I forgot to mention regardking 1.54/1.25: When using the
latest P3 Utility it is now possible to save and restore the P3
configuration. Using P3 Utility version 1.15.8.28 you'll see another tab
labeled "Configuration." Clicking on this tab allows you to save or restore
the current P3 settings.

the screen size with the Samsung, only the centering of the image.

Extra benefit - the ASUS ended up being $50 cheaper and I like the control
menus a bit better as well.

2015-09-01 Thread Marty
Hi Gary,
I purchased the ASUS 23” LED, ModelVX238H, from MicroCenter. Net price was
$139.99 after $20 instant rebate and $20 mail-in rebate. It has both VGA and
(2) HDMI ports so I can attach to my iMac as well, if I care to use as an
extra, extended screen.

I’m another happy ASUS user. I’ve got the VN247, 23” model; VGA and two HDMI
ports. One HDMI goes to my iMac and the other runs over to a Raspberry Pi micro
processor. I like having dual monitors on the Mac, as it allows me the real
estate to have WSJT-X, JT Bridge, and MacLoggerDX all up and visible at the
same time. I would imagine this unit would work equally well with the P3
connected to it, as it is quite modifiable. I vaguely remember paying about
$135 for it at a local Office Depot.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - SVGA Monitor Compatibility Suggestions

2015-09-01 Thread ae4pb
You should be able to adjust the monitor settings to fully fill the screen.
It's common and typical to tweak the monitor settings for full screen viewing.
If the video card were incompatible the image would be unusable and appear
scrambled or not appear at all.

Thanks, Paul.

I just loaded the new beta to my P3 (no SVGA) and it all seems to be
working well with K3 s/n 4668 with latest firmware. I don't have any

Re: [Elecraft] P3/SVGA Beta 1.54/1.25 now available

2015-08-20 Thread Tom

Hi,
I'm happy to report that all functions seem to be good on the SVGA.
Averaging now works correctly, noise blanker as well, and the Y axis now
rounds out at 10 dBm instead of 9.

All functions appear to work from the API as well.

[Elecraft] P3/SVGA Beta 1.54/1.25 now available

2015-08-19 Thread Paul Saffren
This release adds features and fixes some bugs with the P3TXMON
accessory board. We're trying to get this firmware into general
release as soon as possible so even if you don't have the P3TXMON, you
can still help us by loading this new firmware in your P3/SVGA. Please
email me directly (pauls at you know where dot come) with any
bugs/issues found.

Instructions on how to download and install BETA firmware to your
P3/SVGA can be found at the end of this post, after the release notes.

Release notes for P3 version 1.54 and SVGA 1.25 are:

* The SVGA WfEn Track main mode name was changed to Same as
main. This mode now initializes properly upon power-up and menu items to
adjust the SVGA waterfall values are inhibited when in this mode.

* The SVGA waterfall height is limited to avoid interfering with the NB
icon when adjusted via the main waterfall menu item while in Same as
main mode.

* On the main display, menu labels are prevented from impinging on the
waterfall area if the transmit monitor meters are enabled, the function
key labels are enabled, and the waterfall size is set too high.

* Prevents the possibility that FN1 could get re-defined during a
firmware update.

* Eliminates extraneous text on the display when activating certain menu
functions when the TX monitor coupler is not present or the SVGA
waterfall is set to Same as main.

* When no K3 is present, the transmit monitor uses a higher trigger
level with the VHF coupler to sense when to go to transmit mode, in
order to prevent false triggering.

*P3SVGA 01.25 / 08-19-2015 *

**

* Added Noise Blanker.

* Added waterfall cursors, these display exactly as they do on the P3
screen.

How To Download and Install P3/SVGA BETA Firmware:

NOTE: Beta test firmware may have new issues that we haven't caught
during field testing.

Follow these steps to load a P3 beta firmware release:

1. Create a new folder for the beta firmware on your Desktop or some
other easily found location. (Don't use the same folder you use for the
regular firmware release; you may want to keep those files around in
case you decide to go back to that revision.)

2. In a web browser, type in this URL:

 ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/P3/firmware/beta

NOTE: On some computers, it may take some time for a directory of the
beta files to appear. If you do not see the correct files, press
'refresh' on your browser to reload the page.

You should see the file: P3-0150_SVGA-0124BETA.zip If you do not see
this version of the zip file, press the RELOAD / REFRESH button on your
browser to update your browser cache.

3. Right-click on the .zip file containing the beta firmware (e.g.
P3-0150_SVGA-0124BETA.zip). Save the file to your beta folder.

4. Unzip the files into the beta folder.

5. Enter the path to the beta folder in P3 Utility (Local folder for
firmware files).

6. Make sure you *DO NOT* check the P3 Utility box titled Copy new
files from Elecraft server.

7. Click on Check versions now. Your P3 must be connected to the
computer and turned on.

8. Review the release notes (under the Help pull-down menu).

9. Click Send all firmware to P3.

10. Please report any new firmware issues to k3supp...@elecraft.com

Paul

Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA - Spurious Spike

2015-03-08 Thread Bill
There was also a problem with the BNC cable feeding the P3. I
experienced that and merely changed to a mil spec cable. That cured the
problem. No idea what caused the problem, but that cured it.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA - Spurious Spike

2015-03-08 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Ted,

Do an archive search for the string:

SVGA ribbon cable

Review the posts and see if they bear any similarity to what you are now
experiencing. I think the gist of the thread was that placement of the
ribbon cable could be the cause of spurious spikes.

But there is no signal there - tuning across the spike¹s frequency with
the SubRX produces nothing audible in the K3.

The spike disappears when SVGA EN is set to OFF.

The spook appears although there is no SVGA monitor connected, and no

Firmware in both the K3 and the P3 and its SVGA are current as of

[Elecraft] P3 (+SVGA) freeze update

2015-02-11 Thread Carl Clawson
One observation:

I too have found the newest firmware to be much better. But I had it freeze
once and it didn't seem like it was ever coming back. I didn't time it but
it must have been stuck for at least 10 or 15 seconds. I tapped my foot
switch to briefly flick the K3 in and out of transmit, and it started
updating right away.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 (+SVGA) freeze update

2015-02-11 Thread mike
I have been 'fighting' P3 freezes for a long time. Mostly mine have seemed to
be RFI related. I recently implemented most of Jim Brown's RFI prevention
suggestions, bonding, ferrite chokes, interconnected earth grounds, pin-1
problems, etc. and they have made a big difference. The freezing is not
easily reproduced, so it is hard to troubleshoot. It is really a pain when
it occurs in a contest. The new FW works much better, but I still get the
occasional freeze. 73 ..mike AI6II

Re: [Elecraft] P3 (+SVGA) freeze update

2015-02-11 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Carl,

I too am still experiencing occasional freezes. Typically 1 to 2 seconds in
length. I'm going to guess that the improvement is on the order of 95%. I
think the problem was described as the way in which the K3 tells the P3 that
it is coming out of transmit. You would think that if the firmware fixed
this communication issue that it would have been a 100% fix unless there was
a second reason for freezing.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA in Split

2015-02-08 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Tighe,

I was able to repeatedly duplicate what you described. I think you found a
bug.

First, we should get the nomenclature correct. You don't mean VFO A Marker
you mean VFO A Cursor. And the problem only occurs in Tracking mode. And
the problem is not just caused by pressing the Spot button. If you gently
twist the VFO A dial the center frequency on the top of the SVGA screen
changes and the VFO A cursor jumps to the center of the screen on the
external monitor. The P3 display remains as it was.

In addition to toggling FixTrack you can also clear it by a very slight turn
of the P3 knob if the center frequency shift function is still active. A
slight turn will make the VFO A cursor jump back to where it was set at the
side of the screen.

Others may not have noticed it because the whole idea of having the VFO A
cursor not in the center of the screen really cries out for Fixed Tune mode
rather Tracking mode.

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA WaterFall Marker Issue

2015-01-17 Thread Tighe Kuykendall
Just loaded the latest P3 Beta to get WaterFall Markers. Thanks for the
feature.

But... I noticed a curious behavior. Using the button on my P3 which
is programmed for WfallMkrs I noticed it's not controlling the SVGA
marker as it does the P3 display marker.

If I start with VFO A Marker off and Waterfall Marker off. Turn on VFO
A marker then tap the button for the Waterfall Marker. P3 behaves
normally. The SVGA does not display the Waterfall Marker. If I tap the
MKR A button on the P3 to turn it off, then tap it again to turn the VFO
marker back on, both the P3 and SVGA display the Waterfall Marker. If I
then tap the button I have programmed for WfallMkrs the P3 turns off as
expected but the SVGA continues showing the marker. Two taps of the MKR
A button to turn off and then back on gets the displays in sync again.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA WaterFall Marker Issue

2015-01-17 Thread Tighe Kuykendall

Two more observations.

If I turn the Waterfall Marker on and have it displaying on both P3 and
SVGA then tap the assigned button to turn the Waterfall Mark off, it
stops displaying on the P3 but on the SVGA where the marker is
displaying the marker stays with the VFO frequency. If I turn the P3
knob to move the VFO A marker the waterfall line stays centered on the
VFO Frequency and with a knob tap to QSY the marker line remains with
the VFO A frequency.

The MKR A frequency display in the upper left corner of the SVGA display
disappears after a knob tap to QSY. The marker frequency continues to
be displayed on the P3 display. Don't recall if it was that way before
the upgrade.

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA external monitor freezes - RFI?

2014-11-05 Thread mike
When using KPA500 my external monitor (and the P3 display) often freezes,
sometimes up to 5 seconds, after I transmit. With the external display
disabled, the P3 does not freeze (and incidentally it refreshes much faster
without the ext monitor enabled.) I also notice a slight flickering of the
monitor screen while transmitting. I take this to be a RFI problem. I have
added four snap on ferrite beads on each end of the VGA cable. The monitor
is as far away from the amp and feedlines as I can get it and all equipment
K3, P3, KPA500, KAT500 are bonded to a ground bus. This is not unique to
this monitor as it happened with a different smaller monitor I used before.

This has always been a problem, and I would like to eliminate it as it is
very disruptive to is usefulness in finding a clear spot to break through a
pileup. Not sure what else to do. Has anyone else had this issue?
