[Elecraft] Quality
I have heard a lot about the excellent performance of the new K3 in rejecting nearby interfering signals. Great performance in the receiver is useless if the strong signal nearby is excessively wide. I hope to be that strong signal, so I hope I am not transmitting a wide signal. I wonder how everyone else quantitatively tests the transmitted signal quality? Is the 2-tone test unit used. What about phase noise. I can measure down to 70 dB below the wanted signal, but more than that is a challenge and yet it still matters very much to the listener adjacent if I am an S9+ signal. I think my signal is clean, but is it? If the phase noise is good on receive it will also be good on transmit. The same synthesizer is used for both. Ted, it's all of the above...and then some! Part of what makes Elecraft so great is that Wayne, Eric, and the rest of the team go to extraordinary lengths to make sure Elecraft owners have the best possible experience, from unpacking the components to on-air experience. [Elecraft] Quality Terminal lugs
I use VACO lugs and crimping tools. These are found at electronic supply houses. For DC power and ground bonding of station equipment, I use #10 AWG auto primary wire. It is available in multiple colors and has fine strands making it flexible and easy to work with. I also flow solder into the crimped sleeve area starting with the ring side and NOT the wire side. Don't allow much if any solder to wick into the wire as it will stiffen and can break with repeated movements. 73 Bob, K4TAX Date: Mon, 5 Mar 2018 10:33:57 -0500 From:"j...@kk9a.com" To:elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] A momentary BAT LOW warning Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain;charset=utf-8 I am glad that you found the problem relatively easily Barry. [Elecraft] Quality Ham Headphones?
Can anyone suggest reasonably costing plain-vanilla earphones for ham use? What 2007 headphones are available out there - be it WMart, RShack, or Bose? What quality, not WWII vintage, earphones are good performers for K2, IC-706MKIIG, or IC-7000 type ham rigs? I'm not searching for Western Electric WWII headphones. I suspect there is one or 2 models out there, that we can all afford. What impedance am I looking for? Thanks, Fred, FL Finding fabulous fares is fun. Let Yahoo! RE: [Elecraft] Quality Ham Headphones?
Gosh, just about any modern comfortable headphones will work FB. Most low-cost phones have an impedance of about 50 ohms that works FB with the Elecraft rigs. For a long time, "hi-fi" phones had an impedance of about 8 or 16 ohms to be used with audio gear. The preferred impedance seems to have gone up with the popularity of portable music players such as the "Walkman". Let's see, what's hanging on the phones jack of my K2 at the moment are some inexpensive Radio Shack phones, "Nova 56". I think they're about a decade old now . I've got some inexpensive LabTek phones around here somewhere too... Actually, I think you'd find that the old WWII type phones wouldn't work. Most of those phones were very high-impedance: about 2,000 ohms. I've not tried them with any Elecraft rigs, but I think you'd find the audio level disappointing if you can hear anything at all! I concur with the Labtec headphones. I probably have four or five pair around here. They work well with the K2 and most of the other rigs I have. I wore them last field day for much of the 24 hour period with little discomfort, at least for me. Re: [Elecraft] Quality Ham Headphones?
Eric Scace K3NA has an article in the current issue of the National Contest Journal (Jan/Feb 2007, pp. 7-10.) about headphones for contesting. His contention is that the best headphone solution provides complete passive audio isolation from noises in the environment, with perfect, distortion-free audio from the radio. What he determined worked best for him were custom-molded in-ear monitors (such as the kind used by professional concert musicians) and high-isolation, deep shelf industrial earmuffs. The custom-molded in-ear monitors are not cheap and not exactly what the original poster of this thread has in mind, I'm sure... -- Kenneth E.
