Just a quick thought, are you using a 10:1 probe? If so, you would only be
getting 5 uV to the scope.

Re: [Elecraft] XG2 Sig. Generator

2017-05-09 Thread Don Wilhelm

Randy,

That scope has a sensitivity of 2mV per division on the most sensitive
setting. That is 2000uV per division. The 50uV output of the XG2 would
show up as only 1/40th of a division on your 'scope - that may not be
enough to discern easily.
If you are using a 10X probe then the XG2 output would be only 1/400th
of a division - very difficult to see.

[Elecraft] XG2 Sig. Generator

2017-05-09 Thread Randy Moore
I have a trusty Elecraft XG2 S9 Signal Generator that I've used for
years. It produces a nice S9 signal into my K3 at 7040.3 KHz. I'm
trying to use it for trouble shooting a problem on a transceiver kit and
there's something that I don't understand. When I try to measure the 50
uV (S9) signal with a Siglent SDS 1102 CML scope, I get nothing (no
signal). I've tried it with the XG2 antenna connector open, and with it
connected to a good 50 ohm dummy load. I'm measuring at the XG2 antenna
connector (center conductor) with the scope probe grounded on the large
50 uV/1 uV switch which is grounded to the XG2 circuit board ground.

I'm able to measure other signals of about the same amplitude and
frequency.

Are my expectations wrong, or am I doing something wrong???

2011-07-22 Thread Andrew Moore
Problem solved!

Thank you in particular to Tony KT0NY, Don W3FPR and Alexey.

Turns out that D1 was the problem. Note! It wasn't due to a short as some
had suggested, but rather, checking the errata sheet revealed that on the
Rev. A board (like mine), the silk screen was backwards. The banded end of
diode D1 (1N4148) should be nearest to R7, which is the opposite of what the
silkscreen suggests. Turns out my XG2 was assembled incorrectly from the
start (I'm guilty). Not sure if the errata was issued yet when bought my
XG2 or if that came afterwards, but in any case, I cut out D1 and replaced
it in the opposite direction and instantly have a proper 50 uV signal.

I did also remove D2 (the rectangular "output" LED) but I'm not sure if that
was a problem or not.

Thank you all; I would never have noticed this problem unless you mentioned
it. Now I will proceed with calibrating the K3 using this reference signal.

One more suggestion - check if either D1 or D2 (near the output socket) are

D2 was shorted, besides of other reasons.)

Check to see if you have 1.22 volts at the cathode of U1. If not,

[Elecraft] XG2 low output

2011-07-22 Thread Andrew Moore
Output on my XG2 3-frequency test oscillator appears to be down (by a
different amount on all 3 frequencies). Tried replacing battery.
Suggestions on what part(s) might be faulty?

Re: [Elecraft] [XG2) Won't oscillate on 40m

2011-07-20 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
It could be the crystal but that's really rare. The first thing I'd check is
the battery. If it's low the oscillator will stop working and it might be
marginal so the lowest-activity crystal stops first - in your case perhaps
the 40 meter crystal.

Just got an XG2 of unknown provenance. Appears to have been carefully
assembled, and puts out a good signal on 80 and 20 meters, but 40 meters
output is nonexistent. The band-switch is fine, so I suspect either the
coupling capacitor before the crystal, or the crystal itself is bad.

Just for my edification, would crystal failure be an expected result if
someone transmits into the XG2? I'm trying to understand why only the one
band would go dead.

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] XG2 Frequency Accuracy

2010-12-12 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Dave,

I would expect the frequency to be within a couple hundred Hz of the
frequency on the crystal.
Yes, you should be able to pad the frequency down with a small parallel
capacitor, just like any VXO. I don't know how much range you would get
without adding a series inductor to the bottom side on the crystal.
Experiment with it and see what you get.

Actually, I think it would be easier to just build a VXO or two -
manhatten construction is quite easy to do, just cut some pads for the
parts of the circuit that need to be isolated from ground and glue them
to a PC Board ground plane - alternately, use high value resistors (4.7
megohms for instance) to serve as "insulators" and build it using Wes
Hayward's "Ugly Construction" techniques.

2010-12-11 Thread David Gilbert

Yeah, I understand that. I was just wondering how close they might be
since I don't have a clue what the tolerance is of the crystals used by
Elecraft. Specifically, I was wondering if they would be close enough
(typically) to use for in-band IMD tests as a function of AGC settings.
Or at least close enough that whichever one was higher in frequency
could be easily padded down to within a few tens of Hz or so of the other.

Re: [Elecraft] XG2 Frequency Accuracy

2010-12-11 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Dave,

The frequency accuracy of the XG2 will vary with the individual
crystals. It is not specifically for frequency accuracy, but for level
accuracy.

In other words, I would not depend on the XG2 for any sort of frequency
calibration unless you measured the output of a particular one with a
calibrated frequency meter.

Larry,

I did the recalibration with the XG-2. Did not notice any change. And if
there were any, I am not able to measure that accurate.

Anyway, I use the XG2 quite a lot for some experiments with transformers
etc and filters. I Use the K3 (measuring dBV) as a level meter. Great
combination.

An external source like the XG1/XG2 is most useful for doing the RF Gain
Calibration routine in the K3 Utility. S-Meter Cal is also nice but really
doesn't affect performance other than S-Meter accuracy.

Re: [Elecraft] XG2

2010-11-08 Thread Adrian
I am surprised the XG2 photo on the elecraft website shows D1 in
incorrect bias position.
I got caught out and after reading the errata & reversed D1 placing it
on the bottom of the board.
I think a lot of people would use that photo to check their setup though.
I am just waiting on a bnc pl259 adapter before testing my K3 mds.

I put together an XG2 earlier this year and I think that soldering skills of
any sort might work. It is a pretty easy little thing to put together. I
personally think it is far easier then soldering PL259 stuff.

Also, the whole kit does not take more then 60 minutes to put together, maybe
even 30 minutes.

Re: [Elecraft] XG2 - Trim Frequency?

2010-05-03 Thread Don Wilhelm
Brian,

There is no provision to trim the crystal frequency on the XG2. This
signal generator is designed to produce a well controlled output level,
but not a precise frequency reference. It *is* a frequency stable
signal source, but the exact frequency depends on the particular crystal.
If you want to move the frequency down a little bit, you could add some
small NPO capacitors across the crystal leads. Experiment to determine
the value needed. I guess one could install some surface mount trimmer
capacitors on the bottom of the board, although the height of the feet
might have to be increased to allow enough vertical space for the trimmers.

[Elecraft] XG2 - Trim Frequency?

2010-05-03 Thread Brian - N5BCN

Hello,

I recently assembled a XG2 signal generator and was wondering if there is a
way to trim/adjust the output frequency. I also have a XG1 and it has a
trimmer pot to adjust the signal to a reference, the XG2 has no such
adjustment that I can tell.

Thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] XG2 signal generator

2010-01-04 Thread Joe Planisky
Bah! Winding toroids may be tedious, but it's by no means difficult.
It's sort of like sewing on buttons. If you've never done it before,
the first 1 or 2 are sort of fun. By the time you've done 10, it's
not as much fun. By the time you've done 20, you begin to understand
why some people are willing to pay someone else to do it. :-)

One of the things that makes it a little frustrating especially with
the smaller cores (like the T37) is that it can be hard to hold on to
the thing while winding. I've found that attaching a small cable tie
(ty-rap) tightly to the core provides a convenient handle. You can
even chuck it into a bench vise to leave both hands free to thread the
wire.

Thanks Lyle. Great answer! Hidden treasures are always just in front of us.
And thanks to

identical to those using the Sears autoranging DMM. I'll discuss these with

[Elecraft] K3 MDS calculations using the Elecraft XG2

2009-09-15 Thread Fred Atchley
I set up the K3 Rx sensitivity test (using 1 microvolt signal) according to
XG2 manual.

It seems to work in general except that the resulting MDS calculations seem
too low:

123 dBm on 80 meters,

132 dBm on 40 meters, and

130 dBm on 20 meters.

I am using the front headphone jack on the K3, with the CONFIG:SPKR = 1. AGC
is off.

Preamp is own, RF & AF gains are at maximum, and the CW passband is set to
500 Hz.

The AC measurements were made using a Craftsman autoranging multimeter.

Example: on 40 meters the reading was 0.310 V with XG2 on and 0.018 V with
XG2 off.

(0.310/0.018) = 17.2.

Log 17.2 x 20 = -24.7 dBm.

MDS = -107 dBm -24.7 dBm = 131.7 dBm.

I was expecting a better value (maybe -137 dBm?)

Could it be a problem with the DMM? If so, is there a recommended DMM?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Tony,

Pure supposition on my part, but I can believe the capacitors are
selected to control the level of oscillation amplitude, so if you want
to use other crystals, you may have to experiment with the capacitor
values to retain the 50 uV and 1 uV output levels.
If only the frequency (and not the level) is important to you, the
capacitors may be optional or not critical.

[Elecraft] Elecraft XG2 Signal Generator and 160m

2009-02-03 Thread Missouri Guy
Hi Gents,

No question here, but I did want to post this in case
someone else wants to operate his XG2 on 160m
instead of 80m

I ordered a crystal from Mouser, part number
520-HCA184-13X for 1843 khz. The XG2 wouldn't
oscillate with the new crystal. Bob, N6CM, designed
the device, so I asked him for some pointers. He
explained it this way (thanks Bob!):

"What happens is that because of the small
crystal blank, the series resistance goes up as the frequency goes
down. You can try increasing C1/C2 by first 50% or so and then 100%
to get 160 working but it's possible that you may lose 20. It all
depends on the particular 20 meter crystal that you have."

I changed C1 to 33pf from 18pf, and C2 to 100pf from 47pf.
The XG2 now oscillates well on 20, 40 and with the new
160m xtal.

I've just finished the R7 MDS calculations:

80m: -121db
40m: -129db
20m: -129db

Remember; the R7 hasn't had any maintenance alignment since the 80s, so I
thought the old geezer did pretty well :o)

It's not realistic to do MDS calculations on the Orion II rig, because the AGC
off setting does not really turn the AGC off. It just sets the decay rate at
1000db per second, which prevents getting good RMS readings from the speaker or
headphone connections. I found this out while trying to peak my XV144 RX on
random noise with the N-GEN using the Orion II. I finally had to connect the
XV144 to an FT1000MP MK V to do the adjustment.

Tom I did the same tests with a XG-2 and K2 #4913, a TS-850SAT and a Drake TR4.

The TR4 beat 'em all. Still, I plan on ordering a K3 this spring. It'll be very
interesting
to see how the venerable TR4 (1969 production) fares against the best rig on
the
market.

nice aluminum project boxes and still have access to all controls. I also
added PTT and output range switches to the 2T-gen. Info is in the

Dennis,

It can do that - IF and ONLY IF you first calibrate the XG2. It has
trimmers to adjust the frequency of the crystal, but you will need
something (calibrated frequency counter is easiest) to calibrate the XG2
first.

RE: [Elecraft] XG2 mini-module

2007-03-22 Thread Siu Johnny

XG2 is a very useful tool in the radio shack. It is a signal generator
with fixed level so that you cna measure sensitivity of your radios no
matter whether it is k2.

I recommend it but you have to watch out the shipping costs. I would
suggest you not only order a XG2. You should get other things ordered from
Elecraft as well. Otherwsie, the shipping cost will form a significant
portion of the total costs.

RE: [Elecraft] XG2 mini-module

2007-03-21 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
It's useful on any rig covering 80, 40 or 20 meters, Dennis.

Its 50 uV output is what many manufacturers use as a reference input level
for an S-9 signal, although there's no real consistency between various
rigs. That 50 uV number came about simply because receiver manufacturers
needed *something* to use in their final test and alignment on the assembly
line as a "go, no-go" parameter, and 50 uV was chosen many, many years ago
for that purpose.

The sensitivity measurements are useful on any rig. The instructions have a
few funny comments in them as they try to relate to any rig. For example,
there are specific instructions to set the attenuator and preamp, but not
all receivers have such settings. Whatever is normally used (if anything) is
right. Also on the K2 CW-N is NOT narrow, but simply one sideband.

The best way to evaluate the maximum useful sensitivity (or more correctly
S/N +N ratio) is at the narrowest selectivity setting. The instructions
correctly recommend using 500 Hz bandwidth (if specific bandwidths are
available) since that's what the various manufacturers tend to use.
Calculating that number in addition to your narrowest selectivity provides
something you can compare to many published specs for other equipment.

[Elecraft] XG2

2007-03-15 Thread Jeff Kinzli N6GQ

So I just finished building an XG2, and did the measurements on my
K2/100, #5945. MDS came out to be -136.96 dBm. That seems to be what
the manual states is within normal range.

I wonder what the variance is on the MDS between K2s? Anyone else
measure theirs and care to comment?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] XG2 Output levels

2006-07-23 Thread Pete
Hi folks,

What has been the observed consistency of output levels of the 3
frequencies of the XG2 Receiver Test Oscillator?
80mtr vs 40 mtr vs 20mtr xtals. Specifically, is one xtal generally
producing slightly more/less output than the others? Still within the
Output Accuracy +/-2dB spec of course.

Is George's (W3AB) data representative of any XG2?

80M - 03.579 = 03.57910 @ -75.00 & -106.3
40M - 07.040 = 07.04015 @ -73.67 & -106.0
20M - 14.060 = 14.05982 @ -73.50 & -105.8
3 X 40M = 21.12052 @ -85.33
4 X 40M = 28.16077 @ -93.67
2 X 20M = 28.11962 @ -81.50

Re: [Elecraft] XG2 Harmonics question

2005-11-05 Thread Mark Schreiner
I would think it would be similar to the XG1, which according to its
manual and according to measurements that I took on an HP8594E (I think)
Spectrum Analzyer which matched closely to the manual as follows:

2nd Harmonic: -7 dB
3rd Harmonic: -14 dB
4th Harmonic: -24 dB
5th Harmonic: Not Specified but I measured it, just can't find the
results now

The manual specifies that the results may vary slightly but should be
within +/- 3 dB of specified values. Since there is no filter on the
output that would change this I would think that the results would be
similar for the XG2 as the XG1. Maybe somebody could measure these and
verify.

[Elecraft] XG2 Manual errors?

2005-09-12 Thread John Webster
I picked up a new XG2 mini-module from the friendly folk at the Elecraft
booth at the South-Western Division ARRL Convention here in Riverside CA,
this weekend. I suppose I just need a building fix :-)

Unless I am missing something, there seems to be a couple of errors in the
manual. I am only up to the second page, so I thought I would just check
with the group, before I ignore what I think are errors, and just press on
regardless.

The manual that came with the kit is Rev. D, dated September 6, 2005. (The
on-line manual is still Rev. A, dated June 23, 2005, and is clearly an
earlier, less complete, version).

1. In the introduction it states that "A power-on LED (green) is
provided . . ." In fact, the LED is red as is correctly noted in the Parts
Inventory at the bottom of the page. This is, of course, totally
inconsequential.
2. The fifth assembly step on page 2 calls for DMM resistance readings,
the last two of which just can't be right, if I understand the schematic at
all. It is stated that the junction of C4 and R3 is supposed to read 57-63
k, but it simply reads open circuit. (Surely this is right?!, see schematic:
ONLY resis-ters have been soldered in at this point). The same applies to
the reading one is supposed to get at the junction of U1 and R1-57-63k. In
fact, this junction has no path to ground at this stage. Incorrect readings
at these check points could be rather disconcerting to a novice or
inexperienced builder.

Comparing the XG1 manual with the XG2 manual suggests how this may have come
about: the latter manual was produced as a modification of the former one,
and some things slipped through that should not have. Is this right?

Do I just keep going, or do I need my head read?

Thanks and 73

P. S. The XG2 kit has fewer parts than the XG1 kit, but is $20 more
expensive. I imagine it must be the extra two crystals and 3 position
mini-rotary switch. As a point of interest, just what does it cost to get
fundamental frequency crystals like these made up, anyway?

[Elecraft] XG2 parts list

2005-09-02 Thread Matt Osborn
The XG2 parts list has swapped the positions of X1 & X2 (the schematic
is correct). X1 should be the 14060 crystal and X3 should be the 3579
crystal. X2 is listed correctly.
