According to many of the reviews of the SB40 I've read on various forums
(B&H, Amazon, and even this reflector), apparently you can go wrong.

The Koss SB40 appears to be the same headset as the Yamaha CM500, but with a
dynamic mic. My first CM500 headset actually said “KOSS” on the microphone

An electret mic has much better fidelity than an inexpensive dynamic mic, so

Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha Headphones

2022-11-24 Thread
I tried the Logitech G335 headset for SSB Sweepstakes this year with my K3s.
They are affordable at $39.99 and seemed to work as well or better than my
(now broken) Yamaha Headset. The receive audio seemed at least as good & a
friend said the microphone sounded fine. The earmuffs are fabric rather
than plastic (we'll see how that wears), there is no windscreen for the
microphone (but that didn't seem to matter). My only complaint is that they
have a volume dial that seems unnecessary. I taped mine to keep it from
being inadvertently bumped (after a misguided "my radio is broken!" panic).
I operated for 22-hours & found it to be a good purchase for me - and the
price was right.

non-USB version for $30.73. Just ordered to try them, that’s really inexpensive!

Koss makes a SB45 headset and a SB45 USB headset. If it does not have USB
listed it should have the 3.5mm connectors that you wanted.

Yes. In lay terms, it's a property of directional microphones with a
single rear opening. EV is well known for their Variable-D cardioid
mics, like the RE10-11-15-16-18-20-27 mics, which have multiple rear
openings spaced along the "barrel" of the mic. Proximity effect (bass
boost when very close to the sound source) is greatly reduced by this
construction. Their first mic of this type was the 666, known as the
"Buchannon Hammer," because EV was based in Buchannon, MI, and one of
the company's owners demonstrated its ruggedness by driving nails with
it. :) For a few years, AKG and Shure both made a few variable-D mics,
but they're long discontinued. I still own one, the AKG D224, which is a
very nice mic.

Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha Headphones

2022-11-21 Thread John Marvin
Proximity effect has nothing to do with the technology of the
transducer, i.e. dynamic, condenser, electret, ribbon, etc.

Proximity effect is due to the type of transducer, i.e. whether it is a
pressure transducer or a pressure gradient transducer or a mix of the
two. That determines the pickup pattern, and that also determines the
amount of proximity effect the mike has.  A pure pressure transducer has
an omni-directional pickup pattern and absolutely no proximity effect.
A pure pressure gradient transducer has a figure 8 pickup pattern (i.e.
bidirectional cardiod) and the highest level of proximity effect.  One
of the most common pickup patterns is the cardioid pattern, which is a
directional pattern and has a decent amount of proximity effect.

Your experience with dynamic vs. condenser mics was probably more to do
with the pickup pattern. There are a variety of "cardioid" patterns, one
of them being hyper cardioid, which is more prevalent in condenser
mikes.  It is more directional than a cardioid and has further "reach",
which would allow a vocalist to be further away from the mike and still
be picked up well (but would fall of quicker if they moved off to the
side).  That further distance could significantly reduce or eliminate
proximity effect.

Another possibility is a sub cardioid pattern which is less directional
than a standard cardioid pattern, which would also have less proximity
effect at the same distance from the mike.

A long time ago, velocity ["ribbon"] mics were common in broadcast,
apparently they're not any more.  Really boosted the bass if you close

board and sound like James Earl Jones.

You're absolutely right, Al. Dynamic mics have long dominated broadcast
announce and DJ studios. EV owned that market until the '90s, when Shure
started making some inroads with their SM7B (which has long been one of
several popular studio narration mics).

I'm not sure why most headsets have electret mics.

Because they are much less expensive to build with very good sound
quality, and because they are MUCH smaller. The electret capsule in the
mics built into headsets and most ham mics probably costs much less than
a buck to manufacture. I suspect that the housings for Heil mics cost a
lot more than the capsules. NY9H, a former broadcast engineer who later
represented a major mic mfr, and who was an early K2 builder, was the
first to observe that the mic Elecraft sold with the K2 was a cheap
capsule crammed into the PTT housing with a bit of foam behind it. If I
remember correctly, was marketed as a Heil product.

Maybe it's because they have a higher output which lessens the need for
a lot of preamplification?

Unbalanced electret mics are built with a FET-follower output stage that
allows them to drive an unbalanced input stage with a reasonably high
input Z, and with bias supplied between the signal pair and return
through a high-value resistor.

When I was a kid, the most widely used mic, by far, was the carbon mic
used in ALL telephones (back when AT&T was a monopoly, and Bell Labs was
the premier engineering research institution on the planet). It was
displaced (maybe in the '80s?) with the invention of the electret.

The Koss SB40 appears to be the same headset as the Yamaha CM500, but with a
dynamic mic. My first CM500 headset actually said “KOSS” on the microphone
plug, so yes, they are probably made in the same factory.

An electret mic has much better fidelity than an inexpensive dynamic mic, so

some direct responses, so I checked the archive. Thanks to everyone who replied.

The problem is that the headphones creep a bit as I use them - and it's a
distraction. From the responses, it seems some people have had no trouble with
this, but others have suggested ways to cope with what I am seeing. So, there's
probably a 50/50 chance of getting get a better set if I exchange them.

I like the way they sound, so I'll probably keep them, and try something to
help increase the friction in the adjustment detents

I have three sets here and have retired others in the past.  They mostly all
have the issue you speak of. I have a large head (why a Koss won't work for me)

adjust.  I've thought to just pin them or glue them in place but I just
habitually adjust them when I put them on.

They were cheap, so maybe I shouldn't expect more, but I'm wondering if anyone

When I'm not wearing them mine will slide to different spots when I'm
handling them. Once I put them where I want and am wearing them,
they've always stayed in place.

Are yours slipping out of place when you're wearing them?

Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha Headphones

2022-11-17 Thread David Gilbert

My CM500 works fine, although I added cloth ear muffs for more comfort.

The friction detents in the adjustment are accessible.  Try putting some
rosin or other friction enhancer on them.  If you are the only one who
ever uses the headset and if your setting was always the same, you could
probably even superglue them in place.

They were cheap, so maybe I shouldn't expect more, but I'm wondering if anyone
else had this same experience. If other people have not had this issue, I will
return them and try another set, but maybe I should just spend the money and
try something else.

My hearing is changing, so headphones are probably going to be necessary. As I
said, I am happy with the Yamaha's performance. Maybe I got a lemon.

[Elecraft] Yamaha Headphones

2009-09-16 Thread Randy Cook
As a brief aside, I am using a pair of Yamaha headphones (not headset)
with my K3 (2051). The model is HP-170. As an audiophool of sorts, I
appreciate the clear sound. These are VERY comfortable. On the ear
style, so I can still hear the louder goings on in the house, but am
not bothered by most of the racket from two teenage boys. They
replaced excellent, but less comfortable Sennheisers.

I have found similar Yamaha headsets at very reasonable prices on
auction and closeout sites.
