Re: [Elecraft] PTT-Key Settings won't save

2024-07-05 Thread Josh Fiden
This is the solution. Bob showed me how to do it before the UNSAFE option
existed AFAIK. I wasn’t aware it was a fixable problem beyond booting computer
first and only powering radio after everything was stable, or setting TX TEST
mode. All a pain.

Do this.

Re: [Elecraft] PTT-Key Settings won't save

2024-07-05 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
Once you learn how to fix this unwanted keying issue in Windows, there's
little reason to ever use the default UNSAFE option of *CONFIG:PTT-KEY*
(tap '1' to toggle between "USB SAFE" or "UNSAFE"). The K4 does not have
any equivalent option because it is simply not needed.

To prevent unwanted keying of your K3 or K4 about 6 or 7 times when using
DTR or RTS to key the rig, just disable two COM port settings (Serial
Enumeration and Modem Control at Startup) using Windows Device Manager.
Just follow the instructions and screenshots in this short document, linked
from my QRZ.COM page :

   - How to prevent unexpected transmissions when using FTDI USB-to-Serial
adapters (online Google Doc, from post

to
   Elecraft Reflector, August 12th, 2018)

This applies to the Elecraft K3S, or a K3 with the FTDI version of the
Elecraft KUSB, or the Elecraft K4, or the CW / FSK / PTT keying circuits in
my S-BOX-USB .

If using a legacy 9-pin serial port on a PC like COM1: for keying, a simple
registry edit is required. See pages 29 to 33 in this PowerPoint
Presentation for the details, or contact me OFF LINE for help via TeamViewer
QuickSupport if you
don't want to attempt this yourself:

   - Everything You Need to Know About USB and Serial Interfaces
, updated for 2021, presented to Spokane
   DX Association, Feb. 3rd, 2022
  - Watch YouTube recording of this presentation here
  .

Note that moving a rig's USB cable to a new USB hub (internal or external),
or using commercial "device driver updater" software (not recommended), or
a major Windows update like upgrading from Windows 10 to Window 11, will
usually reset these important driver options back to defaults, so if the
keying problem returns, simply perform this procedure again.

Then set CONFIG:PTT-KEY to UNSAFE and there will be no more hassles.

Frank,

Yes it should bring up RTS-DTR after the port is polled.
When running with Unsafe mode, pay attention to when the K3 is turned on
and when the computer is turned on.  At times, you may have to turn the
computer on after the K3, and an easy way to prevent the extraneous
keying is to either use TEST mode or simply turn VOX off during the
computer boot time.

[Elecraft] PTT-Key Settings won't saven I

2024-07-04 Thread Bob McGraw
I use FLDIGI and in doing so I configure the radio PTT and KEY in the
FLDIGI application.  When I load FLDIGI and go to CW mode, the radio
switches to CW mode and the PTT - KEY switches to RTS - DTR.   When I
close FLDIGI the radio switches back to OFF - OFF. I've checked another
couple of applications that I rarely use and they control the radio
correctly.  So I'd say the configuration is handled by and saved the
application and NOT the radio.

One MUST always shut the K3S down by the power switch on the front
panel, and never by the power supply.

I use the Config Menu to set the PTT-Key to RTS-DTR. As long as I don't
turn off the rig, it works correctly. Once I turn off via the front panel

If while it is set to RTS-DTR I do a SAVE CONFIGURATION in the utility, I
can restore to the RTS-DTR values until I turn my power off.
Then it goes back to OFF-OFF.

Other config settings such a 1 or 2 speakers still can be changed and the
change is stored even after a power off/on.
Where are the settings stored in the K3? EPROM? Could one memory cell in
an EPROM go bad?
Is there a way to "factory reset" or something to clear this problem?

Thanks,
Frank

Frank,

That is a "safety feature" because if the computer is turned on after
the K3 is powered up, it can key the K3 when the computer tests/sets its
ports.
Once things have settled down at the computer, PTT-KEY should resort to
whatever it was set before the power off.

You can find the full explaination in the full firmware  release notes.
It was some time ago,, so I suggest searching the release notes for
PTT-KEY to find it.

I noticed that the PTT-Key Configs settings (RTS and DTR) are not saved

Any thoughts on what might cause this? And how to fix it?

never send commands may require "UNSAFE" mode. In this case, unwanted
transmit can be avoided by turning the PC on before the K3S

Re: [Elecraft] ptt-key

2024-04-04 Thread W3FPR

Evert,

I am recalling that this is intentional to keep the K3/K3S from being
keyed when the computer is powered up after the K3.  IIRC the mechanism
is reversed after some action at the computer port. Do a search through
the Firmware archives for mention of PTT-KEY to find the answer.

The PTT part of the “PTT KEY” setting can be used to turn ON the transmitter
for RTTY (AFSK) and other digital modes. Use either RTS or DTR for this. The
KEY portion is used to send CW (Morse code) either with the key input or paddle
input. You will need VOX set to ON for this to work. Use which-ever of DTR/RTS
you don’t use for PTT.

Re: [Elecraft] PTT KEY CONFIG setting volatile?

2016-05-23 Thread n9tf
Hi Gary,

Firmware 5.33 was the improvement for this. See below in my message. (posted
earlier this morning). If you have Unsafe mode toggled these settings will not
default back to OFF-OFF.

Even in the Safe mode, I have noticed the rig needs to have been powered down
for more than a few seconds/minutes to reset to OFF-OFF. A test I ran this
morning was to turn off rig "first" then power supply off and kept off for 5
minutes each, SAFE MODE and UNSAFE MODE, powered up the supply first then the
K3S, and found in SAFE MODE the PTT-KEY had reset to OFF-OFF, but not in UNSAFE
MODE.

"* PTT/KEY USE WITH THE USB PORT IMPROVED: PC applications can activate PTT and
KEY at the K3S via the USB port's RTS/DTR signals. However, initial setup of
the rig's USB port by the PC may cause pulsed or continuous activation of the
transmitter. This can happen if the computer is turned on after the K3S, or if
the USB cable is not connected. There is now a "Safe" mode (the default) which
disables PTT-KEY transmit until the K3S receives a command via USB, such as a
read of the rig's VFO frequency. To turn on safe mode on/off, go into
CONFIG:PTT-KEY and tap '1' to select "USB SAFE" or "UNSAFE". Exit the menu and
turn the K3S off/on. Applications that use PTT-KEY via USB but never send
commands may require "UNSAFE" mode. In this case, unwanted transmit can be
avoided by turning the PC on before the K3S."

Are you using the Power switch on the radio or by chance turning OFF the

Yes, running in UNSAFE mode remembers the PTT-KEY setting.

Subject: RE: [Elecraft] PTT KEY CONFIG setting volatile?

Check the updates to latest firmware version. There is a safe mode and Unsafe
mode for the PTT-Key line. In Unsafe mode PTT-Key line should not turn off.

* PTT/KEY USE WITH THE USB PORT IMPROVED: PC applications can activate PTT and
KEY at the K3S via the USB port's RTS/DTR signals.
In this case, unwanted transmit can be
avoided by turning the PC on before the K3S.

Re: [Elecraft] PTT KEY CONFIG setting volatile?

2016-05-23 Thread danny . higgins
Yes, I reported that one just after I got S/N 10105. It worked at home using
the USB interface, but when I went to IOTA last year it powered up in TX mode
when the USB lead was not connected. It took a few phone calls to sort it out,
but once we knew what the problem was it was easy to get round.

I still have a problem here. If I configure the K3S to operate via the USB
lead, then power down, remove the USB lead, power back up then set the config
for PTT_KEY to be DTR-OFF, then the K3S immediately goes into TX and stays
there until I re-connect the USB lead. It sounds as though there is still
something not quite right with the keying logic yet.

2016-05-23 Thread Jim Sheldon
It may be something unique to the K3S. My older K3 didn't do it, but
the new K3S (#10641) always reverts to PTT KEY OFF-OFF on a power cycle.
must be a glitch in the FW. It IS completely repeatable as the OP
stated. Definitely call Elecraft Support on it.

Danny,

Do a test without WSJT running. Set PTT key config to DTR - OFF, then cycle
power on the K3S. Does that setting survive the power cycle? If so, it is not
a K3S problem, look to the WSJT software for the solution.
If it does not survive the power cycle, contact K3Support.

Re: [Elecraft] PTT-KEY setting for use with Writelog and DX4WIN

2008-10-06 Thread Jim Brown
First, Set the K3 just like you would for QSK (or semi-break-in,
if that's what you want), and get it working with your paddle or
bug. Now, without changing anything, set the K3 CONFIG:PTT-KEY to
OFF-DTR. Now, go into WriteLog and tell it to send CW on the same
COM port that you're using for rig control. The computer should
now be sending CW for you.

I've been trying different DTR and RTS settings (CONFIG|PTT-KEY) to get PTT and
CW to work with a
serial port connecting my computer to my K3. In particular I've been trying to
get Writelog and DX4WIN
to work. I'm using a real serial port and a serial cable with all pins
connected. The cable/port works fine
for communications with the radio. Using various settings of PTT-KEY and
various setting for Writelog
and DX4WIN, the rig goes into transmit sometimes but does not sent CW. I've
searched old emails and
so far nothing is working. So, if anyone has this working for Writelog and/or
DX4WIN, I'd appreciate if
you could give me know good settings or some advice in general. It seems
simple to do but I can't get it
to work. I had all this working with a microham micro keyer but I want to try
this "simpler" approach.

Thanks,

Roger, W1EM

I have my K3 setup with WL (& DX4WIn also) as follows:

Port settings screen - COM 4, CW 'checked', DVK 'blank', Rig type K2, poll =
yes, com ptt = yes
DVK type = windows sound card, all mode ptt on com port RTS = not checked,
CW keyer type = PC generates

CW PTT subscreen: PTT control= command rig on com port, CW delay = 100MS

Rig Vox must be on - set QSK like you want it,

No connection to rig from computer except Elecraft serial cable/USB adapter
and the sound card in-out cables.

Your COM Port will be 1 or 2 if you have a real serial. I am using the USB
to serial from Elecraft.
