All,

The Elecraft sideband net will meet today, October 11, at 1800 UTC, on
14.3035 +/-. I will be net control from my QTH in the northern Atlanta
suburbs. Hopefully band conditions will play nicely for us today.

See everyone there.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net Announcement

2013-09-15 Thread Charlie T, K3ICH
I know it would take a few more net control volunteers, but the Collins
Collectors Association net on 14.263, Sundays at 2000Z usually has at least
two net controls located at (more-or-less) opposite ends of the country.
They start with buy/sell/swap and then take check-ins by call area, starting
with 1,2,3,4. Then 8, 9, 0, 7, 6. This attempts to follow the general
propagation on 20 M and they stress that you check-in from the area your are
transmitting from rather than your call. Mobiles, DX, and QRP stations are
given priority and are specifically listened for every few minutes, taken
anytime, anywhere.

Admittedly, I just heard about the Elecraft net, so I don't know how long it
runs, or whether this format would be practical.

The CCA net is one of the oldest running "Equipment Specific" nets and if on
a non-Super-Bowl or obnoxious contest weekend, can run over 4 hours. This
puts us at 8PM EDST, so propagation must be taken into account.

I have, on many occasions, checked in with my KX3 barefoot and gotten great
signal reports not to mention some incredulous comments about signal
strength. As you might expect, most 100 watt and up ops can't believe you
can actually make contacts running 10 watts. (You don't have to be running
Collins, just have an interest in it.) I might add that I do NOT have any
spectacular antenna either, just a little Cush-Craft LPDA at 55 feet.

As a slightly off topic comment, I didn't have any luck trying to check in a
couple weeks ago with the KX3 and a 6 foot diameter Mag-Loop, but conditions
were not good either(sour grapes).

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB net announcement

2013-07-21 Thread Bill Blomgren (kk4qdz)
With my antenna roughly perpendicular to where the signal needs to get to the
net, I could hear occasional snippets, but not enough there to listen to.  I
need to rotate the antenna about 90 degrees to make a difference.  (Perhaps
next week.) - There was a fair bit of activity at 2-3 on 20, so I suspect the
dipole is my problem.  (I checked with a couple of others in the general area,
and they could hear the net nicely.. but with S9 noise, all I could hear was
just a few snippets of call signs.

However.. NEXT week (with luck) I'll be roughly perpendicular to the current
orientation if I can get something over another tree limb.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB net announcement

2013-07-21 Thread Bill Blomgren (kk4qdz)
Tried to find the net today, but 20 is a bit of a mess here in the SE.  (My
antenna orientation due to available tossing options also may make a shot
toward the NW difficult since its orientation is se-nw making it an "off the
end" shot) (Dipole that looks center fed from the outside, but appears
physically as end fed...)

I will not be available to be the net control station for the net today, and I
have not found a replacement.  This is a chance for someone to step forward and
take the role today.  How about one of our regular relays.  The net is at 1800Z
on 14.3035 MHz.  Hope that it goes well.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB net announcement - Cancelled this week

2012-03-05 Thread Edward R. Cole
As it turned out I missed the net due to a phone call from my cousin
whom I have not talked with for some years.

I was planning to check in with my 270w amplifier driven by the
K3/10. I used it on 80m on Saturday to check in a net up here in AK
and got a report of S9+ vs S4 with 14w from the K3/10. I was most
pleased to get a good modulation report which reassures me the
amplifier is linear.

Tuning around 20m about 1900utc band conditions were pretty bad as I
was not hearing a lot of stations I expected from the
contest. Apparently a solar flare.

Maybe next Sunday?

Any consideration given to moving to 14310 on a trial basis? On the East

I expect the presence of the CQWW SSB contest this weekend to make having
the net tomorrow challenging if not imposible. I will tentatively cancel
tomorrow's net. However, I will check the area around 14.314 MHz at net
time (1800Z) tomorrow and give the net a try if QRM isn't too bad. We'll
see.
I am in western Oregon. Drop by if you are free to see if the net goes on.
Otherwise, CQ Contest!

That makes sense. I was thinking a bit and realized most computer
motherboards have a 14.318mc oscillator in them. Then as you said the
color burst freq x4 and that makes a huge mess out of that freq and near
by. 20m was up & down and the solar conditions are terrible this weekend
compounding the problem of having only 15w to work with. At least one

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net Announcement

2009-04-12 Thread Jim Wiley

Mike et al -

It might be good to check to see if you aren't doing it to yourself.
14.318 divided by 4 is 3.579 MHz, the "color burst" frequency used by
millions of consumer devices as a reference frequency, and not just TV
sets. I have heard carriers on or around that frequency with strengths
up to and including "S9" for literally years. Harmonics from poorly
designed or shielded oscillators in TV sets, computers, clocks, DVD
players, VCRs, microwave ovens, game players, fax machines, printers,
telephones, toys, medical devices, and many more items have polluted
this frequency for at least 20 years. Just now I checked and can hear
at least 5 separate "sources" in a casual check of the frequency -
and those are just the "loud ones" from a random beam heading. I am
sure there are dozens more underneath the louder ones. .

The sources are so ubiquitous that it is virtually impossible to escape
them no matter where you live. The signals that you are hearing are
probably not the same ones that another ham in the next state is
hearing, but there are so many of them that it is unlikely anyone can
escape them.

They are part of the reason for that FCC warning about "Operation this
device may cause interference to nearby radio ant TV receivers ."
(I am paraphrasing here) that you see on so many consumer electronics
devices.

One reason your DSP may be having trouble eliminating the carriers is
that there are usually several on slightly differing frequencies. The
crystals aren't all that accurate in some devices, and by the time we
get to the 4th harmonic, differences of a few tens of Hertz to several
hundred Hertz are common. Most of these oscillators are not in some
type of circuit that is phase locked to a master source, as is the case
for some TV broadcasts. Most of them are "free running" in the sense
that all they have to be is "close enough" to perform the task at hand.,

I found the group on 7.185, after listening for a few minutes on 7.188.
I was able to check in through Mark,WQ7X. WA7BOC was barely audible
until about 1/2 way through the net. I did also hear another station
from Texas (I think) but do not remember his call. Very heavy static,
the filters in the K3 (#253) did not do much good. But then I'm only on
a vertical. WIll try 20, this Sunday.

At just about 9PM EST, I heard the word "Elecraft" on 7188, and

but given the static crashes and high QRN level, nothing more was
understandable (it just goes to show the "Elecraft" stands out). At
about 9:15, I clearly heard K4PV in N.W. Florida and he was able to copy
me, then he talked to another station who I could hear but not
understand. At about 9:30, everything disappeared (except the static and
QRN).

My K2 does a wonderful job on CW under such high QRN conditions
since I can use my very narrow IF and DSP filters to essentially
eliminate the QRN, but it doesn't do well at all on SSB - when the
signal is barely understandable, using narrower SSB filters doesn't
significantly reduce the QRN and makes the signal even more difficult to
understand (the SSB filters work better under heavy QRM conditions).
And the noise blanker in my K2 of course has no effect on the static and
QRN conditions we had last night.

So, how did the K3s do under last night's conditions?

7.185.
In actuality the QSO he heard on 188 was two guys waiting for the ESN to
start. We had the net on 7.185 this evening. That is why Roger said
7.188+-. Wish you could have found us. It was fun.

me, then he talked to another station who I could hear but not

Hi, Actually I did find the group on 188!
despite very heavy static crashes on my end I could copy several
stations out west! I was very impressed with the great audio! Really
punched right through!!

Larry,

Roger checked 7.188 and found a QSO in progress so he slid down to
7.185.
In actuality the QSO he heard on 188 was two guys waiting for the ESN to
start. We had the net on 7.185 this evening. That is why Roger said
7.188+-. Wish you could have found us. It was fun.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net Announcement

2008-03-06 Thread Dave Andrus
It ended up on 7185 kHz, due to QRM, I think. I checked in with Roger
about 0235 UTC. I heard quite a few other signals, but all from Texas
and west.

I just checked the freq again, and there's now a fairly strong
broadcast carrier centered exactly on 7185.

That's great - but being in England, there is little chance - from the
propagation, broadcast stations (there is a Hindu stn on that freq) and the
time point of view ;-)

Anyone in Europe want to set up a net we can respond to - until sunspots
improve?
