Re: [Elecraft] K3 Production Firmware Rev. 4.05: Support for P3 Panadapter

2010-08-04 Thread ab2tc

Hi,

OK, that will work for me. I like to be in charge of what I download and
where I put it so I don't like to use the utility's automatic update
feature. I have a subfolder for every version I have ever downloaded from
Elecraft, each with a shortcut to the utility. It would be nice if Elecraft
would provide a zip file with all the necessary files, whether it's a beta
or not. But I am OK for now.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Production Firmware Rev. 4.05: Support for P3 Panadapter

2010-08-04 Thread Mike
  Knut,

I like to keep all my versions separate also.

Later versions of the utility will create a directory for you. In the Local
folder
for Firmware box, just type it in, or browse to your location, then add the
\dirname. After the first time, all you have to change is the dirname.

You still have to check the Copy new files checkbox, and hit the Check
version
now button, to do the download, THEN hit the Send checked items to K3 button
to do
the actual load

You are just as much in charge this way, it just hides the somewhat convoluted
nav on
the Elecraft web site.

73, Mike NF4L.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Production Firmware Rev. 4.05: Support for P3 Panadapter

2010-08-03 Thread Dick Dievendorff
There is a newer K3 Utility version available in the ftp.elecraft.com\P3
folder that is being tested by our P3 Field Test team.

I've asked to have it published to our Elecraft K3 software web page, but
the last few days have been very hectic in Watsonville; they're busy getting
the backlog of P3s out the door.

The new beta K3 firmware was packaged with an updated
K3UtilityVersionInfo.txt file that causes the message about a newer K3
Utility version being available. Sometimes we have to guess what order
things will go out, and this time I guessed wrong.

Your current K3 Utility will do what it's supposed to do with the new
firmware. Or you can install a newer one from the ftp site.

2010-08-03 Thread ab2tc

Hi,

The FTP site is a little confusing. I can't find the usual zip file for
4.05. I find a zip for 4.03 and it looks like if I download that and replace
hmcu403.hex with hmcu405.hex and the release notes file, I should be all
set? All the other files are unchanged from 4.03? It's much easier if each
new release has a complete zip file. I also found and downloaded the install
for utility 1.3.7.26.

Knut-
4.05 has been designated a regular production release. You do not use the
FTP method for regular production releases, only for beta releases. Just
start K3UTIL, and check the box that says Copy new files from Elecraft into
local folder. Then click the button that says Check Versions Now. It
should recognize the new firmware and download it. You can then load it into
your K3.

 That's the disconnect.

The K3 Utility does create the default folder to receive firmware. You
get to that folder by pressing the Default button.

The expectation was that most of the time people would be using that folder.
There's also a capability to navigate to other existing folders. However
the K3 Utility doesn't create any folders except the default firmware and
 configuration folders.

It's a useful suggestion for the K3 Utility to have the ability to create a
folder if one is named and doesn't exist. In a subsequent K3 Utility
version I'll add the ability to create a folder if the one you name isn't
 found.

No, it doesn't exist. I expected the utility to create it. I just
changed the path in the 'Local folder' box. I don't know what error
number 3 is, but I interpret the messages as meaning the utility

When it did work, it was after I manually created the folder. Can you

Yes, you can safely upgrade without adding hardware mods.
You must leave CONFIG: VFO MD set to SPI1 (default) until after the K3

Some of the most significant changes since the last production release

 * Synchronous AM detection with optional VFO tracking
 * Incoming CW WPM display (via TEXT DEC switch)

 * Main/Sub receiver audio mixing
 * Many DSP enhancements including improved NR, Autonotch, and AF
 response
 * Live memory recall (MV) as VFO A is rotated
 * VFO coarse-step rounding
 * RF GAIN linearized and S-meter accuracy improved with RF GAIN CAL
 procedure
 * SHIFT control steps of 10 Hz optional for CW or DATA modes
 * VFOs tune down to 490 kHz
 * Lockable transmit controls (PWR, MIC, CMP)
 * Automatic CW VFO offset on mode change (typically used for 6 m cross-

 * GHz transverter digits displayed
 * Many new and enhanced remote-control commands

Improvements will be ongoing, based on your feedback. But we have a

Some of the most significant changes since the last production
 release
 (3.14) include:

 * Automation of often-used control sequences via programmable switch
 macros
 * Synchronous AM detection with optional VFO tracking
 * Incoming CW WPM display (via TEXT DEC switch)
 * Improved DVR message play interaction with PTT
 * Main/Sub receiver audio mixing
 * Many DSP enhancements including improved NR, Autonotch, and AF
 response
 * Live memory recall (MV) as VFO A is rotated
 * VFO coarse-step rounding
 * RF GAIN linearized and S-meter accuracy improved with RF GAIN CAL
 procedure
 * SHIFT control steps of 10 Hz optional for CW or DATA modes
 * VFOs tune down to 490 kHz
 * Lockable transmit controls (PWR, MIC, CMP)
 * Automatic CW VFO offset on mode change (typically used for 6 m
 cross-
 mode)
 * GHz transverter digits displayed
 * Many new and enhanced remote-control commands

If you have questions about any of the above, feel free to post a
question here or to email k3support.

Thanks again for your diligent testing of beta and field test
releases. It's great to have so many outstanding operators working
with us as we continue to refine the K3.

The K3 utility always gets them from the same ftp directory on our web

good way :-)

Make sure you also have also checked the 'Copy new files from elecraft
into Local Folder' box before pressing 'Check Versions now'. I leave
that one permanently checked.

Hi mike,

Pretty much this is the first time we've ever heard of some people not

Just trying to see what you are doing different on that end.

Well, there's a link on the software page at the very bottom. There you will
find a folder called beta. Download the folder, or if you don't want the
release notes, just download the zip file. Expand it. Browse to it in Utility
and go for broke.

I'm not sure why 3.63 is still in the beta folder, but that's where t'is at
the moment :-)

Mike-14 wrote:

I suspect that the Utility is doing its FTP using Wininet functions. For
non-programmers that means it's essentially getting Internet Explorer to do
the work invisibly in the background. It's a good method, as it usually
avoids firewall problems - as long as the user's browser is allowed access
to the web, the utility should be able to access it too - but it does mean
that it is affected by browser settings. If someone happens to have a huge
browser cache and the files are still there from last time then IE will
helpfully show you those instead of looking for new ones.

3.63.zip is still in the beta folder, where we first released it, and
its also in the main /firmware folder that is automatically checked and
downloaded by K3 Utility. n unzipping or other manual intervention is
required when K3 Utility grabs it for you.

The beta folder data will be removed soon, so the normal K3 Utility
method is preferred. Note that we also provide a direct link to the
/firmware ftp directory at the bottom of the K3 software page. I just
checked that and it also has the correct 3.63 files.

It is not necessary to get it via manual ftp or via your browser. K3

The K3 Utility does indeed use WinInet. However clearing the browser
cache shouldn't be necessary as I think I tried to select options to
bypass local cache.

Clearing the cache may not do what you are trying to do unless you use
IE for this cache clearing step. Not all browsers use WinInet.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Production Firmware Release (3.63)

2009-11-23 Thread Dick Dievendorff
That's the disconnect.

The K3 Utility does create the default folder to receive firmware. You
get to that folder by pressing the Default button.

The expectation was that most of the time people would be using that folder.
There's also a capability to navigate to other existing folders. However
the K3 Utility doesn't create any folders except the default firmware and
configuration folders.

It's a useful suggestion for the K3 Utility to have the ability to create a
folder if one is named and doesn't exist. In a subsequent K3 Utility
version I'll add the ability to create a folder if the one you name isn't
found.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Production Firmware Release (3.63)

2009-11-23 Thread Dick Dievendorff
WinInet was, as I recall, initially developed by the Microsoft Internet
Explorer team. The WinInet DLL functions were deemed useful and important
enough that they were included in the core OS. They're documented as part
of the Windows 32 API.

Internet Explorer and the command line FTP client both use the WinInet DLL.
So does the K3 Utility.

It wouldn't be fair to say, however, that the K3 Utility does its internet
access through Internet Explorer.

IE offers a Tools menu option to clear the WinInet cache. There's also a
Windows Control Panel Internet applet that has similar ability.

Actually, I think it the wininet functions come from the WinInet dll,
not the browser. At least in my program it does. Maybe IE uses that dll?

I suspect that the Utility is doing its FTP using Wininet functions. For
non-programmers that means it's essentially getting Internet Explorer to
do
the work invisibly in the background.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Production Firmware Release (3.63)

2009-11-23 Thread John Buck
I was able to download the latest production software using the latest
K3 utility version 1.2.10.27:

Start the K3 utility with the K3 connected.
Press the default button to change the window to to the original
location (it had been set to my beta folder).
Check the box for copy new files from Elecraft into the local folder.
Then press the Check Versions Now button.

I did not proceed to the Send All Firmware to K3 button as I already had
updated my K3 from the beta site.

I have not had problems downloading from the site or to the K3. However
I do respect the advice to not do anything else in the background while
doing the K3 update. I have used 2 different USB adapters including one
from Radio Shack without problems both on my HP multimedia XP SP3 home
computer and on an older Averatec laptop. I also frequently use a multi
port Serial I/O card in direct connection the the K3 without problems on
the home computer.

Version 3.63 with K3 100W and Steppir DB 36 made 550 contacts, 75 of 80
sections, in 17 hours of operating from Hawaii on 15, 20, and 40 meters
in the last weekend phone sweepstakes. I thought it did very well.
However, the operator (me) could use an upgrade. I was too busy running
stations to bother making a faster DVR recording for the Alpha, KH7T,
53, Pacific exchange. My voice nearly gave out just saying the other
stations calls and serial numbers.

Aloha,
John KH7T

RE: [Elecraft] K3 production runs - Any increases planned?

2007-06-21 Thread Craig Rairdin
There are several pieces of good news here:

1) Delayed gratification is good for the soul. It builds character.

2) More time to wait equals more time to gather and count more change for
more options.

3) Third production run is plenty of time to get all the bugs out. I'll
probably be applying patches (software at least; hardware maybe) to my low
serial number K3 while you're happily plugging yours in.

4) All your options will be available when you get your radio. I have to
wait for my subreceiver until September I think.

And there are some lessons to be learned:

1) The early bird gets the worm.

2) Sometimes you go to Dayton and all you DO get is this lousy t-shirt.

3) A penny saved is another 9 months waiting for your K3.

4) Failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on anyone
else's part.

5) There is a penalty for early withdrawal of retirement funds, regardless
of Elecraft's new product announcements.

With all this going for you, you'll be a much better person when your K3
finally arrives.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 production runs - Any increases planned?

Are there any plans to increase the number of units per production run? I've
just been through the roughest financial year of my life. When I heard the
announcement of the K3, I started looking for a way to purchase it. By the
time I found a way (counting change I have been saving for the last dozen
years), the first run was full.

By the time I finished counting out nearly $2000 in change, the second
production run was full. Now I see it's going to be late October before I
even have a chance at one.

I want this radio REALLY bad, but it's very difficult to wait for it when
I've worked through my tech, general, and extra class since the
announcement, have to wait 4 more months still, have nothing but a mobile
2m, and can have any of several (admittedly lesser) radios at my door the
next day.

I know you want to get this stuff right, and this is huge growth for the
company.. but c'mon Elecraft, please tell me some good news! This is as bad
as finding out that Rudolph broke a leg and Santa won't be here until
Easter! :-)

As an interim measure, Rusty, why not build a simple CW rig for 40
meters? It could be a basic crystal oscillator and low power PA,
possibly using vacuum tubes. There are plenty of crystals and suitable
components around. This would enable you to practise your CW skills and
get some experience on HF before your big rig arrives. You will
already have a receiver of course - the one you have been using for
short wave listening before getting your license.

R Atkins wrote:

Actually, we -have- increased our production run sizes as much as
possible to handle our initial order rate. We have increased both our
parts orders and production/purchasing staffing to handle the demand.
The current delivery schedule reflects that increase.

I'd like to ramp even faster, but to be honest we want to maintain our
product quality and there are also limits on how fast we can many of our
parts delivered. There are a lot of long lead time parts in any product
(both standard and custom parts). It only takes one late parts delivery
to slow everything down.

We are also trying hard not to over promise on deliveries. There are
always chances for additional production start up delays, but we are
trying to be as conservative as possible.

Plus we're running as fast as we can.. ;-) Hang in there!

With all due respect

The key factor to Elecraft is *quality*. That's why you want a K3
rather than some

other rig.

There's an old engineering saying: Good, inexpensive, fast - pick any
two. As much as I hate to say it, that saying applies to ham rigs,
including the K3.

More importantly, note this:

If all you have right now is a 2 meter mobile, and you're new to HF
amateur radio, you need a lot more than a K3 and a license. You need an
antenna system, adequate power supply, a proper shack table and
accessories (key, mike, headphones, clock, lamp, grounding), etc. The
K3 alone won't make a single QSO, and without a decent antenna system
its potential will never be realized.

What antenna system will you have for the K3?

73 de Jim, N2EY

besides, some of us have been waiting *years* for the K3 ;-)
