Re: [Elecraft] Thanks Elecraft

2013-03-09 Thread GDanner
Last week (Monday) I left a message for a replacement VFO B knob for my K3 @
11:30 AM Eastern time.
The reply from a technician about an hour later was that the order had been
placed and the knob should be shipped that afternoon. I assume he called to
confirm that was what I actually needed.
I know the best work vendor I ever had (RCA in the tube equipment days)
would not have managed that!

So Rich - trust that Elecraft will give you more service that you can
expect!

Same here. In the low 4 MHz range (MARS ops), I had a number of low amplitude

Re: [Elecraft] Thanks Elecraft -- HK0NA DXpedition

2012-02-09 Thread Gary K9GS
When it comes to amplifiers, boring is definitely good.

A long time ago I was operating a DX contest at a multi-op. One of the
amplifier power supplies was in a heavy steel cabinet on casters
underneath the operating table about 4 feet away. It was about 3 am and
very quiet in the shack (CW contest and only a few people
awake/operating) when the capacitor bank in the power supply let loose.
I saw the flash first and a split second later felt the BOOM. It was
like being in a house that was just hit by lightening and literally
sounded like a shotgun going off next to my head; and I was wearing a
headset.

Kinda wakes ya up :))

Re: [Elecraft] Thanks Elecraft -- HK0NA DXpedition

2012-02-09 Thread Ian Maude
Although smaller than most of the other dxpeditions, our trip to Tiree
(Inner Hebrides, MS0WRC) last October used 4 K3's (all owned by team
members) and one FT2K. We made 12500 Q's in the week on SSB and CW and
continually got unsolicited complimentary audio reports from them. There
was one posting on Youtube from a Russian in his car working me on 20m and
I have to say my audio sounded great! :) The one audio complaint we got
was from the Yaesu. The other issue we found in the week was a noise which
we originally thought was interaction but despite fitting stubs we could
not clear it. It turned out to be phase noise from the Yaesu! No problems
at all with the 4 K3's and a great time was had by all :) The K3 is a
fabulous dxpedition radio, we only had one KPA500 and that was on the CW
station. That is one very boring amplifier, it just sat in the corner and
worked its socks off ;)

Thanks guys

Ah yes, sad but true, Joe. I forgot about that because it didn't
happen to hit me. Judging from their posts, they may be able to
recover the missing sections. This is purely a guess but they did
retrieve some of the lost QSOs while still on the island. Luckily,
they were so loud for so long that everyone had many chances to snag
them on any given band/mode, and re-work them if necessary.

The VP6T logs were great. The best was a Liberian expedition last year
that had real-time logging; your call was in the on-line log before
the last dit had died away.

AND the original, highly successful, multiple record setting K3 DXped to
VP6DX.

That one set the stage for all the succeeding K3 DXpeds that have built upon
the success of VP6DX.

And HK0NA will NOT be the last. More K3 DXpeds are in the works.

How time flies. It is difficult to believe that 4 years ago today (the
Tuesday after the Super Bowl) the VP6DX team was flying from Papeete, Tahiti
to Magareva in the Gambier Islands to rendezvous with the Braveheart.

That would include recent expeditions VP6T and TN2T, and no doubt
others as well. A great field test for the gear, and a great way to
make ops all over the world aware of Elecraft radios. And of course,
great gear with which to actually operate a DXpedition.

The HK0NA operation was outstanding in every way, and will be a great
role model for future expeditions.

VP6T and TN2T set the standard when it comes to handling logs and
confirmations. Unlike HK0NA who appear to have lost significant
sections of their logs, VP6T had *confirmations* on Logbook of the

Yes, and more DXPeditions would be using K3s if the JA companies didn't
have deeper pockets than Elecraft. Think about the cost of doing that
for a small company the size of Elecraft, and you realize that it isn't
easy. For one trip that I was aware of the details, Eric could provide
two radios, but Icom gave them a half dozen 7600s and even paid
shipping, but demanded exclusivity.. On later trips that same group made
the decision for K3s, and I don't think they were supported by Elecraft!

I was especially impressed by the prompt response of Elecraft
yesterday to the ham who is in Togo with damaged gear.
Actions like that speak louder than words.
Congratulations.

2012-02-07 Thread Wayne Burdick
Thanks for noticing, Bill :) The HK0NA crew certainly did a great job,
as have other recent DXpeditions using K3s, etc.

DXpedition use of our gear has been a source of input and inspiration
for us, and we provide a lot of support to the teams. Many hardware
and firmware refinements now in shipping products can be traced to the
kind of stresses put on the gear in inhospitable terrain and climate.

We're now looking forward to a few "micro DXpeditions" featuring the
KX3.
