Re: [Elecraft] Spectrogram for MAC?

CocoaModem is an excellent program. But it's 32 bit so it won't work after Mac
OS 10.14.6 (Mojave). All Mac OS after that require 64 bit applications. The
developer hasn't supported it for years but the code is free and available for
anyone having the skill to update it to 64 bit.

Re: [Elecraft] Spectrogram

2017-09-13 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ted,

You can download a clean copy of Spectrogram 16 from my website
www.w3fpr.com. Scroll down on the opening page to find the link near
the bottom. That version was released as freeware just before the
author "closed up shop" - so yes, no support is available, but it works.

I am running that version daily on a Win10 machine with no problems.

You could also use another audio spectrum analyzer like SpectrumLab, but
I like Spectrogram better.

2013-11-10 Thread Edward R Cole
I ran Norton Antivirus several years ago on win2000pro but switched
to AVG on all but two of my computers. I have an old win95 laptop
that never goes on-line and another backup computer which I run ESET antivirus.

MalewareBytes is the only software that catches all the bad stuff. I
run a scan once a week and it always has quarantined up to 80
hits. AVG2013 does pretty good with catching some of the bad stuff.

Then I run SpeedyPCTools to keep the computer from constipation with
unnecessary files.

The newest of my laptops has win8pro and I was told by a MS sw
engineer that it required no antivirus sw. I have AVG2013 running,
just in case. I have some opinions on win8, but will spare all of
you hearing about it.

Ayup. I used Norton briefly back in DOS days. It was a resource hogging
computer crasher even then. Since, my experience is the vicarious
variety, fixing other folks' PCs after Norton has (pick a number):

1. Trashed it
2. Slowed it to a crawl
3. Crashed it
4. Prevented longstanding software from running til the patch, if ever
5. Prevented new software from running til the patch, if ever
..etc.
Sadly these days its installed as bloatware on new PC's.

Some lucky folk profess not to have any issues with it. More power to em.

Re: [Elecraft] Spectrogram download site

Malwarebytes is good, remember to keep it up-to-date. AVG(free) is a bit
behind the pack in the AV stakes however.

About the best AV (not free) is Eset's Nod32 for Windows users. I think they
even still support Win2k, if you need to keep some instrumentation running
that uses that as an embedded OS for example, and it also gives you a realy
flexible and powerful firewall for those older OS's.

(No affiliation, just a satisfied happy user.)

But...

The smart money, is to NOT open ANY attachments, or click on links in emails
received unexpectedly, from anyone, especially those you don't know. And in
this context, that includes email lists, such as this!

Even if someone you know sends you something unexpectedly, DO NOT open it,
untill you've contacted them and made sure they know it, and intended to send
it to you.

In the case of CryptoLocker, the only real defence, is to have daily (or more
frequent) viable backups of your personal and other important data, or feel
realy smug, and don't use Windows as your OS!

(Note for MS Office users. There is also a recently discovered problem with
some versions of that, that can be compromised and your PC taken over as a
result of opening some malicious .TIF files!)

It is possible to run your mail client (or browser, or anything else for that
matter) under "Sandboxie" (google it.) That wont prevent infection or bad
things happening, or protect your privacy, but it will contain any malicuous
writes to your system, such as the encrypted files, and also preventing it from
removing/deleting your original files, even preventing it from messing with the
live copy of the registry.

Just deleting the contents of the sandbox will then remove all trace of it.
Very
useful for people who for whatever reason like to visit the "darker corners" of
the web.

Anyone who does get hit by CryptoLocker, if they realy need to (like, they
don't
have viable backups) get their data back. DO NOT remove the infection until
after paying up and decrypting the files. It can be done after disinfection,
but
it's a whole lot more painful to do. As the disinfection process removes all
the
tools it provides to decrypt your data once payment has been processed.

The other thing to note, is that this will just be the first of this sort of
ransomware to appear. It's just too successful for the bad guys.

Take great care people. Trust no one, not even me.

73.

Dave G0WBX.

Thanks all for the help with finding Spectrogram, I downloaded it FB from
K9YC's website.

You're right Steve, any other audio spectrum analyzer software would probably
work and I could easily do it now that I've run Spectrogram using N0SS's
tutorial. I previously tried it using iSpectrum on my Mac but I wasn't quite
getting the hang of it. Going detailed step by detailed step following the
Spectrogram tutorial is what I needed and now I understand how it all works.

PS: My K2's filters are now aligned dead nuts perfect, thanks again everyone.

Re: [Elecraft] Spectrogram download site and Virus issues

2013-11-08 Thread Robert Carroll
A few days ago I stopped using both the Microsoft products on several
machines here after Microsoft unexpectedly "baselined" both Defender and
Essentials and gave several interviews disclosing they did not match the
performance of packages by other vendors. You might want to take a look at
what the Microsoft spokesman said. It was certainly a shock to me, and I
received an even greater shock when I looked at recent test results. Even
the free AVG and Avast products ran rings around Essentials and Defender. I
am going to paste in a link, but if it does not work you can search on
"Microsoft Admits That Security Essentials Is Just a Basic Anti-Virus
Product" which brings up the Softpedia report on the Microsoft statement.

Not bad advice. Norton is extremely hard to remove by yourself.
Add/remove does not do it. You need to go to Norton's site and pull a
program that removes it (at least it says it does) from all of the
registry entries and cleans things up. I still have it on one of my
computers, because it is needed for some other things. But, I've gone
with AVG on everything else. Norton has WAY too much overhead and slows
the computer down considerably.

I had the same problem. It insisted that 7zip be installed. I had used
it long ago, so trusted it. WRONG. It took awhile to remove all of the
crap it put on the computer. I think I counted 5 programs that were
installed, all of which run and make changes to your system.

By the way, Norton had no issues with it. See other comments about
them.

+1 for AVG and Malwarebytes together. I run both. That virus that
kidnaps your computer until you pay $300 ransom got mine before I had
Malwarebytes. It was the only anti-virus software that could detect it
and fix it in Safe Mode.

I pay for both on my primary computer mostly to ensure support, but the
freeware versions of both have been fine on my ham-radio-only Win7 computer.

You can not buy Spectrogram v5.17, because Richard Horne, the creator of this

lost in (web)space. An the v5.17 is a freeware. So save it yourself on a disc.

Re: [Elecraft] spectrogram no signal

2011-04-14 Thread Curt Milton
Even without an input (antenna QRN or a noise diode) you should see the noise
from your sound card's ADC.  Nothing at all on the plot equates to me to the
settings being off, so I suggest patiently following N0SS's instructions on
EVERY setting.

Also understand that the Spectrogram does need to know which input (line or
microphone) is getting the audio, and you need to adjust the 'audio slider'
your
PC provides in 'software.'

It may not be your OS - but I myself still use XP.

Re: [Elecraft] spectrogram

2010-12-31 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Tom,

There is one benefit for me when using Spectrogram 16 - it has a larger
display area, and therefore greater resolution and interpolation is
available. BUT, it has more setup parameters and a few more bells and
whistles that are of no use to me.

Version 5.17 is entirely suitable for aligning the K1/K2 filters and
does match your documentation for setup and operation. Other versions
have different setup data.

So my recommendation -- if you are a "newby" to using an FFT based audio
spectrum analyzer, download version 5.17 from Tom's website and follow
his documentation for setting it up. If you are interested in further
enhancements after you have become familiar with the operation, then
download version 16 (the last freeware version) and do whatever you wish
with it - it has a lot of capability.

There's a reason why Norton comes free with many computers (guess why?).
The program is, IMHO, junk...and it is the first thing that comes off
of any commercial box I or my wife buy. There are at least two problems
with it...(1) it steals 'way too many clock cycles, and (2) it has a
tendency to give specious warnings. The warning about Spectrogram is one
of this type. I think David Gilbert is spot on...Norton is a form of
malware.

Re: [Elecraft] spectrogram

2010-12-29 Thread Tom Hammond
John:

There are several(!) versions of Spectrogram available.

IF you are planning on using Spectrogram to align your K2 or K1, then
I'd suggest getting Spectrogram v5.1.7 from my web site... it's
located immediately adjacent to the printed documentation for
aligning your radio (K2 or K1), depending upon which rig-specific
page you've gone to.

You CAN use newer versions of Spectrogram with my alignment docs, but
there's absolutely NO benefit in doing so and newer versions offer
features you will not need nor wish to use.

Visit:

For the K2 - http://www.n0ss.net/index_k2.html

Spectrogram and docs are located about 3/4 of the way down the page

For the K1 - http://www.n0ss.net/index_k1.html

Spectrogram and docs are located about 2/3 of the way down the page

The ONLY additional device you'll need is an audio jumper cable from
the radio;s
speaker output to the input of the sound card on your PC. Suggest
using stereo
connectors, but with TIP and SLEEVE (no RING) connected.

DO NOT OVERDRIVE THE AUDIO INPUT TO THE SOUND CARD.. this will cause audio
artifacts in the display which are not helpful during the alignment process.

If you have ANY PROBLEMS OR QUESTIONS, drop me an e-mail.

Tom Hammond N0SS

Another alternative for folks running Mac OS X or Linux is Baudline, available
at

http://baudline.com

It is free of charge, though not open source. Do note that it has a somewhat
unusual user interface (at least when compared to the typical Windows or Mac
application), so some time spent reading the manual may be necessary. It's an
incredibly powerful signal analysis program.

John...

My Google is not so unfriendly...googling "Specctrogram download"
produces several pages of free downloads. I am using Spectrogram 16.

There is another similar freebie program called "SpectraVue" which is
also available by googling its name.

Both these are .exe programs that do not "install" in the WIN sense. I
am using both with WIN 7 Ultimate, but have previously used them in
VISTA and in XP Pro.

Get back to me OFF the reflector if you can't find copies.

Re: [Elecraft] (spectrogram) K2 crystal filter question

2010-03-20 Thread lstavenhagen

Hi Bill,

Well I've decided to just go with a K3 dedicated base anyway, so I'll just
pick up where I left off on the digital modes with that rig instead. I
really want my K2 to do portable duty anyway and that's 100% CW for me hi
hi. So I'm not going to tear it up again to put the KSB2 module in it as it
really won't get used once the K3 goes online in the shack.

Now that spring is coming Ill have more opportunities to go portable and it
really is a pain to schlep the K2 back and forth between the bag and the
operating table hi hi.

Tnx es 73,

All of these computer "soundcard" programs work tons better if you buy or build
an audio adapter. Mine used a couple of transformers out of the junkbox, a few
resistors and trim pots. I even put in an audio jack so I can listen with
headphones (at reduced volume).

Re: [Elecraft] (spectrogram) K2 crystal filter question

2010-03-19 Thread lstavenhagen

Hi Bill,
Ah yes, I missed this in CocoaModem, thanks. I actually tried the alignment
method "for the tonally challenged" from the article on elecraft's web site,
tho, and that has turned out to be the easiest method for me (long as I
leverage my 6th grade education on the math correctly hi hi).

However, now with the discovery of cocoamodem, I've got a real hankering to
try PSK31. I can already receive it pretty well just using the internal
microphone in my mac (I have 2, my macbook pro and an older macbook). I just
set the rig next to it and turn the volume up a bit and viola I can hop
around in the waterfall in the PSK window and "read the mail" on all the PSK
sigs. It even works on RTTY fairly well in the Wideband RTTY window.
So I may end up revisiting the spectrum analyzer method if I do any
alignment of filters for digital modes.

I may have to put off enabling transmit for a little bit, tho, as I'm
planning on getting a K3 at some point. If I decide against that I'll just
put the KSB2 module in my K2, but I'm trying to, er, make the financial
numbers work on a K3 first hi hi.

You don't have to use a Windows computer to adjust your filters. I have good
luck using CocoaModem and going to the config window, which has a spectrum
display.

There are also a few other programs on the Mac, such as iSpectrum and (I think)
MacCRO. CocoaModem is at http://homepage.mac.com/chen. The others you can
probably google.

As noted by others, Spectrogram is no longer distributed or supported by

I first used Spectrogram on a cheap, POJ Gateway laptop I bought when I
retired and turned in the company's laptop. I had noise in the display
sufficient to mask the audio being fed in from my K2. I tried bonding
the K2 and laptop grounds together, grounding and ungrounding, and was
about give up when I unplugged the laptop power. Noise totally went
away. If you're on a laptop, it would be worth a try.

I no longer have the Gateway.

Re: [Elecraft] Spectrogram

2009-08-07 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

Are you using the mic input or does your laptop have a line-in? You may
be seeing the baseline noise of your soundcard input - some are noisier
than others, and if you have an open input, that may be picking up noise
- Spectrogram will display that open circuit noise pickup. Short the
input and see if it changes.

In any case, I would not worry about it - it may just be some artifact
of the soundcard that will not be relevant to what you are trying to
accomplish. Put some kind of input into the soundcard and adjust the
audio input level to place the display at some convenient point on the
screen. You may have to adjust the sliders in your soundcard control
panel, and adjust the audio level you are feeding to the soundcard. Try
it - connect a cable between the K2 headphone jack and the soundcard,
then play with it for a bit with both a single signal tuned on the K2
and with a wideband noise input to the K2 (even band noise will work).
Once you see it, you will have a better feel for what is going on. A
single tone signal will appear as a spike on the display at the audio
frequency indicated on the horizontal scale - and the filter passband
will be a wider "hump" on the display (at a lower amplitude than the
signal). Adjust the levels and the slider on the right of the screen to
place the display on the screen vertically anywhere you want to see it -
then you can say that some signal is xx dB above the receiver noise
floor, or if there are two signals, you can say that they are xx dB
different from each other, or with only a wideband noise source into the
K2, you can see the relative amplitude of the passband at various audio
frequencies.

A spectral line display is always relative on the vertical scale, it
never shows any absolute value. The information that is conveyed is
that one point is xx dB different than some other point. That is true
with any spectrum analyzer type display.

It's actually the last SHAREWARE version, but yes, it's on my web site at:

  www.n0ss.net

Go to either the K2 or K1 pages and you'll find it there, PLUS the rig-
specific alignment docs.

I foolishly deleted mine thinking that I would easily replace it. Previous
sources (e.g. N0SS) now seem to require $29.99 (and a poor dollar/GBP
exchange rate)

_I_ certainly am not requiring ANY money for the shareware copy... which is
the ONLY version (v5.1.7) which follows the published alignment docs.

Just bring up the config window to get a nice spectral display. You

it working? Not from the install point of view, but settings and such.

Yikes. Can I retract my original question? I sure didn't mean for all
this to start...

Remember slide rules? The vast majority of slide rule users learned it
well enough to get the job done. But there was the minority of guys who
loved the tool as much or more than using it for work. Hence, the speed
contests & ingenius ways of using scales to quickly solve certain
classes of problems. Similarly, there are the stereo buffs more
interested in the stereo than the music it reproduces. Or the car nuts
who have more fun tweaking their cars than going places in them. And of
course, the hams...enough said! :-)

Same deal with OSes, as far as I can see. Linux and Windows users
approach computer use with two different mindsets, or needs. Different,
not superior/inferior. In my particular area of work (R&D within elec
engr & comp sci arena), the army has decided linux is superior for what
we do since we need to tinker with hardware & software often. Business
types in the very same building, on the other hand, are almost
exclusively Windows users. Their expertise lies elsewhere & the
computer is a tool for them, not a gadget to be played with.

So all our viewpoints are correct, just different. Let's please get
back to ham things. :-) And thanks again for the very helpful advice
on linux apps early in the thread!

I also forgot:

YaeComWood/Microsoft: If anything goes too wrong, "reinstall from
scratch" seems to be the standard accepted solution, and for some reason
people seem to think that's acceptable. You stand no hope of fixing any
internal issues yourself.

Elecraft/Linux: Reinstalling from scratch is almost never considered an
acceptable solution to a problem, though admittedly some odd people find
it fun to start again from scratch just for fun, not because of any
problem. Chances are, even if you can't fix it yourself, you can get
someone else to. Also, any extra hacks you want to make, even if you
can't work out how to do them yourself, someone else has probably
published a "howto" on the net. If you DO make a decent fix to the
internals yourself, you can contribute it back to the community, and
your fix might even make it into the next version.

YaeComWood/Microsoft: Designed by big faceless corporations. You stand

YaeComWood/Microsoft: You probably first saw the latest product in a big
expensive glossy advert, surrounded by marketing hype, wooly on

Elecraft/Linux: You probably first saw the latest product online, or in
a technical article in a magazine. The article probably said how great
it was, and how it's easy to outperform something that cost well over
twice as much.

YaeComWood/Microsoft: Mass-produced identically. You buy pre-built, no
other option.

Elecraft/Linux: You can build it yourself if you want, from scratch,
from a scary number of separate parts. It's quite technical, but quite
fun. There are clear step-by-step instructions you can follow. You
probably wouldn't recommend it to a total beginner. It'll give you a
great sense of achievement using something you built yourself.
Alternatively, you can pay someone else to build it for you, and they
don't usually charge a fortune.

I thought this was way off-topic, so was going to reply off-list, then I
realised...

Quality, stability, efficiency, ability to understand how it works,
ability to fix stuff myself if it ever actually breaks, ability to work
my way, standard components, value-for-money, cheap add-ons, easy to
tweak to my own needs, fun to experiment with, great community, great
support, small, that's why I like Linux, and that's why I like Elecraft.

Big expensive mass-manufactured black-boxes that work THEIR way, poor
manuals, bad support, no realistic way to fix things without returning
to the manufacturer, nasty sealed hard-to-replace proprietary
components, BIIIG cost for something that really doesn't work so well,
expensive add-ons, expensive upgrade path, large, that's why I don't
like YaeComWood or Microsoft.

... yet in both cases, the "mass market" seems to previously have
favoured the closed, unmaintainable, expensive power-hungry option, but
both Linux and Elecraft are gaining in popularity, particularly among
experts in their field who know what they're doing, but increasingly
among day-to-day users too :-)

Unfortunately Elecraft kit isn't FREE, or even "free plus packaging",
and initial set-up effort is much harder (but admittedly more fun) than
the black boxes, and the "Ikensu" boxes don't (as far as I know) hang
and crash regularly, or need re-installing frequently, so the analogy
had to break down somewhere ;-)

Someone mentioned "army laptops" with unix. Wow -
can't belive my old DOD counterparts would allow

Re: [Elecraft] Spectrogram - Linear or Log scale?

2006-03-10 Thread Alexandru Csete
Keith,

I am not familiar with this particular case, but usually people only
want to use log scales when the data range spans over many decades. If
you take the logarithm of your data the decades become equidistant, in
other words, the "distance" between 1, 10, 100, 1000, ... will be the
same. Therfore, I don't see any reason why someone would want to have
log scale on the X axis in a signal strength vs. frequency graph. Your
frequency range spans 2 decades or so, if it is AF.

You may, on the other hand, want to try logarithmic scale on the Y
axis. The signal strength can indeed span several decades.

Taking the above into consideration I would also expect the passband
of a filter to be symmetric if you use linear X axis and skewed if you
use logarithmic X axis.

Re: [Elecraft] spectrogram

2006-01-23 Thread ab4cz

John,
I didn't see any other responses to this so I thought I'd jump in again. The
PC-based oscilloscope using a sound card is severly limited in bandwidth. The
typical sound card will limit your bandwidth to about 20Khz, which is hardly
even sufficient for audio work and totally useless for RF. Whle this is a
handy toy for working on low frequency and audio stuff, it's hardly an
"oscilloscope". If you want a scope, look at a big hamfest or on e-Bay. You
can frequently find 50MHz scopes (sufficient for most ham work) for under $100.
There are also some PC-based scopes that have the "oscilloscope" in a box and
connect to a PC through a parallel port or USB and use the scope for processing
and display. I have one such scope ... a PICO 3206 ... that works really fine
and gives the advantage of allowing cut and paste of scope images into
documentation. PICO and others have a range bandwidth and resolution available
for almost any application, and the prices are less than a comp
 arable Tektronix or LeCroy.

If your main interest is in looking at your transmitted waveforms (keying
envelope and "christmas tree", you will be best served by a monitor scope such
as the old Heath or Kenwood. These not useful as general purpose oscilloscopes
but work great at their intended purpose ... to monitor transmitters. I have
the Heath SB-614 I bought at a Hamfest about 24 years ago. Personally, I think
it should be a REQUIREMENT that anyone with a high power amplifier have a
monitor scope. It's the best way to be assured your amplifier is tuned
properly for best linearity. I don't know if anyone is building a modern
equivalent of the SB-614 or the Kenwood (model #?).

Try a Google search for PC OSCILLOSCOPES and you will find a bunch of them
available.

By the way, several of the PC scopes double as a low-end spectrum analyzer.
The PICO 3206 has a 200 MHz analog bandwidth and also a 200MSample/Second
single-shot sample rate. It performs as a 100 MHz spectrum analyzer using FFT
(Fast Fourier Transform) similar to Spectrascope.

Good luck with your search for a scope display. By the way, I just did an
e-Bay search for "oscilloscope" and got more than 13 pages of listings, some in
the $40 range. If all you want is a transmitter monitor, you can probably get
by with a 20 MHz scope and couple RF output directly to the vertical deflection
plates. If you need more information, let me know exactly what you are trying
to do. I can probably give you some more marginally useless advice.

regards,

Jim

Any time you use an audio-based oscilloscope, monitoring the AF output
from your receiver, you have to be aware that whatever you see on-screen
is not only representative of the signal itself BUT to a bigger extent it
reflects those characteristics placed upon it by the receiver itself (it's
filters, the AGC characteristics, etc.). As a result, you should always
remind yourself that what you're looking at (if it's coming thru the
receiver's audio system) is not necessarily what is actually 'on the air'.

John,

Sjpectrogram is a FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) spectrum analyzer program.
It's display is amplitude versus frequency. What you need to display the
"Christmas Tree" and CW waveforms is an oscilloscope display. In the
case of the Christmas Tree, the oscilloscope is set up to display RF
drive or audio on the horizontal axis and RF output on the vertical axis
(the oscilloscope is in X-Y mode, with x=drive, Y=RF out). For the cw
envelope you use the oscilloscope in the conventional mode where the
horizontal axis is time and the vertical axis is voltage. So the short
answer to your question is "NO".

can Spectrogram also show the
Christmas Tree effect for SSB? How about the rise and fall of the CW
note?
What about in receive mode. Can it also show these for the received
station?

2006-01-22 Thread Tom Hammond
Any time you use an audio-based oscilloscope, monitoring the AF
output from your receiver, you have to be aware that whatever you see
on-screen is not only representative of the signal itself BUT to a
bigger extent it reflects those characteristics placed upon it by the
receiver itself (it's filters, the AGC characteristics, etc.). As a
result, you should always remind yourself that what you're looking at
(if it's coming thru the receiver's audio system) is not necessarily
what is actually 'on the air'.
