I think the aim is to be 101% sure that there are no shipping problems
before sending outside the US Canada as the aggro for non-NA customers is
greater due to customs etc.

FWIW I have now paid in full so maybe there's a box in the post for little
old me, but like many others I am happy to wait. I will soon have a

Judging by the S/Ns posted so far (# 27 - (excluding the oddball #66))
for over 3 weeks of shipping it seems they are only gettting a couple
a units per day shipped. Ramp up appears to be moving slowly so we'll
need to practice some extreme patience.

Why will you need this interface thingy? I thought that with the K3 a
standard serial cable and audio leads is all that will be necessary.

Well . . . maybe. I haven't seen the run 2 dates revised as the run 1 dates
have been slipping away. I suspect they are having problems receiving a
critical component that they are happy with. Could be anything from a critical
board component to an acceptable front panel. I'm not excusing what's going on,
but being from a manufacturing background - the most common cause of delays is
having a problem with a supplier (just like we're experiencing) and being
reluctant to hand out any more promises and guesses until having solid info
from he supplier that can be broadcast. In this case hollow promises based on
bad info is a lot more harmful than a simple we have a problem and we're not
ready to declare a resolve.

I received an e-mail on 10/14 stating I'd be shipped within two weeks. Aside
from the 14th being a Sunday, unless it arrives today I'd say there's a problem
that We all can only wait on. I'd expect a statement from E as soon as they
have something they consider reliable info.

2007-10-31 Thread ed palmer
Good morning everyone.

I don't post on these lists because most times I don't
feel qualified to offer viable information in most
areas. However in a manufacturing environment in a
major US corporation in which I'm still very active
and to a certain level qualified, supplier issues
plague us and in turn our customers. All it takes is a
hiccup in the supply chain to cause delivery issues
from that point down stream. All of this becomes very
visible in a Lean Manufacturing operational
philosophy.

Whenever we are unable to meet delivery dates due to
supplier issues for whatever reason we notify our
customers the orders are going to be late then bow our
heads and take the beating we know is coming. In the
end the customers even if unhappy are glad we
communicated the delay so they can formulate their own
customer response if needed.

Re: [Elecraft_K3] Re: We're dieing out here... Doesn't anyone have one yet???

2007-10-31 Thread Frank Van Cleef W1WCG
I totally agree, Julian. I've always had an outstanding opion of Elecraft,
not so much because they are fellow hams, but because they have always
had great products and excellent, speedy service.

All the more reason why I find it so incredible that they have been so
uncommuicative regarding K3 status. I am one of those who signed up
fairly early (Apr 30) and put down half the price to be in the first group
of 200. I really expected that there might be some delays in the beginning,
considering the complexity of this project.

Now I am really frustrated by the total lack of information on what is
going on at Aptos and what we all can expect with regard to the
K3 delivery schedule. Two weeks ago I called and was promised
that I would be seeing an invoice by the end of that week (10/22).
Alas, nothing has been heard. I hate to keep calling them since I
assume they're really busy, but I wonder.

Come on, Elecraft -- how much trouble would it be to give us all a
little blurb on what's going on? Or even explain in more detail just
why the great silence from Aptos. Can you imagine how we who
are waiting feel when the field testers brag about all the nice things
their new K3 can do, and the rest of us sit here without a clue?

K3 ? ? ?

I understand what you're saying, but Elecraft has a lot of goodwill
from its customers that is being eroded by the current lack of
information. I was always willing to cut them some slack due to the
fact that they are fellow hams, I don't believe they intended to have
these problems, that things do go wrong that are outside your control
and perhaps the scale of the K3 project (and the demand for it) has
caused problems they didn't anticipate. But that was because of their
track record and the fact that they were open with us in providing
 information on the reflector.

I'd be happier if they told us what the problem is, and what the
realistic effect on shipping dates is. Perhaps it is something they'd
rather not have published on a public reflector. However, they have
entered in to a contract with all of us who have placed orders, so I
think we are entitled to have information. It really ought not to have
been necessary for people to contact Lisa to find out what little we
have. They have our email addresses. Aren't people who are willing to
put down $1000 or more as a deposit months in advance valued customers?

Open and honest answers served on a plate of humble pie.? In my case it was
usually a tutorial on lessons learned.? The ability to keep clients updated on
a current basis has a lot to do with the size of the organization. I had a
staff that could keep up and I usually only had one customer to deal with,
making it my job to be reporting on a daily basis. I guess I had a vision of
what to expect, and haven't been too disturbed by the process. I also believe
that Aptos may modify the plan for the next roll-out. I'd fully understand.
What have I seen that I still feel good about -
1. I got to order a hot item before getting second best because I had a chance
to see it going to press.
2. I didn't find out about K3 after spending a lot on next best last month.
3. My faith in Elecraft never waivered and is soon to be rewarded.
4. Slow reports but no BS. I have received timely notices via e-mail - without
checking up. I think you may all see a two week notice.
5. I feel good that I'll get a quality piece of hardware with no excuses or
recalls with apologies. Anyone bought a $46,000 car lately?
