Re: [Emc-users] Rigid tapping
500 RPM for tapping is really impressive in my point of view, my former woking friend Correa couldn't do it at that speed even though it was upgraded to a PC controller. Regards, Sven 2008/6/2 Anders Wallin [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Cool, what kind of tweeking did you have to do with hal? John nothing special, just set up the spindle encoder so that motion.spindle-revs increases by 1 when the spindle turns one revolution, and connect the index-enable to the encoder counter. setp m5i20.0.enc-03-scale 2000 net spindle-pos m5i20.0.enc-03-position net spindle-pos motion.spindle-revs net spindle-index-en motion.spindle-index-enable net spindle-index-en m5i20.0.enc-03-index-enable Rigid tapping worked fine at 500 RPM, but gave following errors at higher spindle speeds. Now I did it by first starting the spindle and then issuing the G33.1 command. I suspect the following errors are related to the Z-axis not keeping up with the spindle if the spindle is already turning at 2000rpm. So perhaps start the spindle and have the G33.1 command on the same line of g-code so that the spindle accelerates from 0rpm to commanded rpm and the z-axis has time to respond? Now I have no accel/decel on spindle-speed-out, so the accel/decel is only set in the VFD. But that should be ok as EMC2 does the gearing on the actual encoder signal and not commanded rpm. 2008/5/22 Jon Elson [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Glenn R. Edwards wrote: Jon, I hope it doesn't appear as though I am jostling you for the final word, however you pointed out a major difference between us hobbyists and professionals. A professional must deliver a part in spec 100% of the time ( six sigma- don't get me started...) no matter if the part was cut in the cold morning or during a hot afternoon, if the part was mounted at the center of the table or if mounted near the edge, if the machine was being run by your best operator or the guy you hired yesterday. A tap can wear, but so can a thread mill cutter and probably faster. However, thread milling introduces two additional tolerances that tapping does not. Each of those tolerances can (and eventually will) produce an unacceptable thread. A loose fitting thread can have a LOT less pull-out strength than a properly formed thread. And, you might not be aware of a loose thread unless you have a GO NO-GO gage. In my day job, I want tapped holes from the machine shop (In fact, I am getting quite accustomed to roll-tapping and the superior strength thread it produces). During the weekend, I will enjoy making my own threaded holes with a thread mill. Yup, I have to say I do not do aerospace work, or much where a mechanical failure would endanger life or limb. And, I am not a job shop where all my parts wind up passing under the scrutiny of my customer's incoming parts inspector. On the other hand, I buy a lot of stuff that is SUPPOSED to be tested, and I have a little pill bottle full of screws with no threads or no recess in the head, and such like. My guess is that thread milling with a worn cutter will result in an under-size internal thread or an oversize external one, in either case the parts can't be assembled, rather than a too-loose thread. Jon You've got the same problem with a worn tap. Don't worry about thread mills, I know some uge industries that uses them in full production. VCE, Scania, Saab Aerotech to name a few. They wouldn't use them for the same reason as I would. They use them for cost and speed, I would use them because they are fun. :) - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. Sven Looking at a picture of the tool on the web site, it basically looks similar to a highly modified tap, fitted to a high helix end mill. I realize that's a bit of a generalization for a thread mill, but I must be a bit dense, because I still don't see how you could cut both right hand and left hand threads using this mill. Do they put right hand threads on one flute and left hand threads on the other flute? I can understand how they do it on a lathe type tool, where the cutting bit has just the teeth cut into the tool with the pitch of the threads, but the milling cutter looks like it has developed thread patterns that extend around the mill for the width of the flute. Wouldn't reversing the direction of the spin just back out the tool from the hole? Mark There are no threads on a thread mill, all the cutting edges are in pairs and on the same distance from each other as the supposed thread climb. Assume you take a couple of dinner plates and stack them, that's the same profile. The same tool can be used for M10x1,5 and M16x1,5, The tool itself has a smaller diameter than the hole it is going to thread, and the machine is then moving the mill in a circular pattern (as when pocketing a hole) with the same vertical climbing speed as the thread. If the thread is a 1,5 mm-threader the machine must move the mill 1,5 mm each turn it makes in the hole. The speed or RPM of the mill actually doesn't make any difference, as long as it's relative to the working piece. Re: [Emc-users] WINE EMC
Wine is a very well working solution for running Win-apps under Linux. Sometimes there are DLL's missing though, but they can easily be found with help of Google. There are several public archives out there where one can find them. For example, I'm an old school Photoshop user. Gimp is very good nowadays but it doesn't work as PS and therefore I'm forced to run PS to be fast enough. I use Wine to run it on one of my Suse-boxes and it runs really well. I can run some test if it help (of course if it helps EMC, I'll do it!). I have Solidedge and some CAM-apps I can test. Regards, Sven 2007/11/21, Rafael Skodlar [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Andrew Ayre wrote: Duh - sorry, ignore. You can't set up a VM on a live CD because you would be redistributing Windows. Gah... That's correct, but a bit confusing, I mean the way you suggest using VM. EMC is installed on the hard disk when in practical use. You should be able to run virtual machine in that kind of setting. However, virtualization takes it's toll on CPU and memory which would not work too well with real time applications. Including software to run virtual machines in live CD is not a problem for open source OS. You might be able to find virtual appliance with Windows 98 out there if I'm not mistaken. While possible and in some cases an interesting challenge to install all kinds of operating systems and applications in one system, I would rather dedicate a PC to a real time application and have everything else on another system. PCs are so cheap these days that it's easy to setup a PC for a single use, EMC in this case. If nothing else, a good reason to use a dedicated PC is to keep it close to the CNC machine, properly grounded and permanently connected. The requirements for such a PC are modest too. Here we enter more of a discussion for generic OS usage where the trend will be in direction of virtualizing applications so that OS will become mostly irrelevant in the future. Multicore CPUs are entering mainstream, BIOS will soon get either additions or be replaced with hypervisor code to enable first OS to boot in virtual mode. It's ridiculous that we cannot go without much hated commercial OS just to run some critical business applications because there are no good or well supported alternatives. It has been noted by the software giant, that never invented anything, as is now trying to catch up with yet another computer technology it missed completely. Proprietary software will be taken care of with virtual appliances for specific use as the products mature. Wine is getting better but it's left behind because of undocumented features it tries to emulate. Fortunately we have good and affordable alternatives, VirtualBox, mentioned by Andrew, VMware, qemu, etc. One low cost way with good support is to use VMware Workstation, create virtual machines with whatever OS you need, and then use free VMplayer to run it in other systems. Licensing is of course an exercise left to the user. As far as open source operating systems go, there are already numerous appliances available and supported by VMware community. I tweaked gridprobe.ngc into smartprobe.ngc: http://cvs.linuxcnc.org/cvs/emc2/nc_files/smartprobe.ngc?rev=1.1 and the results are something like this (the program preview is turned off, and the purple lines are the backplot): http://timeguy.com/cradek-files/emc/smartprobe.png http://timeguy.com/cradek-files/emc/smartprobe2.png Connecting those points gives this path: http://timeguy.com/cradek-files/emc/probe-results.png This example was 2500 points probed in about 20 minutes. Re: [Emc-users] Add URL to the link list?
Obviuosly, I'm blind AND stupid! :) Looks great! 2007/10/8, Alex Joni [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi, currently under www.linuxcnc.org - Links - EMC related pages you can find a link to CNCzone: - EMC forum on CNCzone (it's the second link, just after the link to our wiki) If you think it's hard to spot, maybe we can do something about this (suggestions?) Guys, I'm one of the moderators at cnczone.com and we have a forum for EMC, would it be possible to add it to the link list on the EMC web site? I don't see it as a replacement for the mailing list, but like a complement. I usually recommend people with problem to join the list. Regards, Sven - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Re: [Emc-users] Minertia Motor (Yaskawa) Servos
Hi Jon, I asked a long time ago and sent the spec to Vlad and he said it would be ok. So I hope they will work, but you never know... Unfortenately it seems that Rutex is a sleeping business nowadays, so I hope my Rutex board will survive. I rather buy new motors if something wrecks. 2007/9/9, Jon Elson [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Svenne Larsson wrote: I'm planning to use them together with a set of Rutex controllers. Not there yet, but in a very near future I have more to tell. :) Oh, there will be lots more to tell, I am afraid. The Minertia motors have extremely small inductance, as they are ironless rotor motors. I think the circulating triangle wave current with the unfiltered Rutex drive will be a problem. It may cause excessive heating of the motor, drive or both. You may want to consult with Rutex on putting an inductor in series with the motor before you even connect it up the first time. Re: [Emc-users] Minertia Motor (Yaskawa) Servos
I think I have the same, or at least a very similare model from Minertia. They are not mounted on a machine yet (will be very soon) but there shouldn't be any problem. Regards, Sven 2007/9/8, John Crane [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Has anyone ever connected EMC to Yaskawa servos? I have a 4 axis machine that was designed as a laser solder machine some 15 years ago. The servos are a brush type Minertia Motor # UGRMEM-02MAKOE with UTOPI-04OMX optical encoder (400 pulses/rev). The controller is FR01RB7-R2M. Any info would be appreciated.
