Create icon hasn't moved, it should still be there (in the menu list
when clicking on the top corner). Alternatively, you can bring up the
create icon window using the command line:

e_util_eapp_edit app_name.eap

So for Firefox you'd do this:

e_util_eapp_edit firefox.eap

This will create an .eap file in the current working directory. You'll
need to move this file (if you created it somewhere else) to
~/.e/e/applications/all. More information can be found here:

[e-users] gnomish e17

2005-09-14 Thread Alan Trick
First of all, I want to say that I love enlightenment and am very happy
with it's improvements and such.

However, there's still a lot of programs from gnome and such that I
still find I really want to use, like nautilus (I can't wait till
evidence becomes more usable), file roller and other miscellania. The
problem is that when they are loaded in e17, they don't load all the
gnome theme stuff with them. This is quite anoying in nautilus because
almost all my icons look the same, and it's difficult to tell what's
what. I found out that running gnome-theme-manager will do this, but
it's a pain to have to run that whenever I restart e17. Also There's a
couple things it doesn't do (at least not for my theme), in nautilus,
the Computer icon and several things in the Go menu show up as missing
icons. Is there a way to run like half a gnome-session or something to
do this?

Also it doesn't load my gtk theme by default either. I'm still new to
linux so I might be doing something wrong :|

Thanks,
Alan Trick

changing themes, but moving a window around the desktop to force arepaint will fix it. Transparent windows work fine, the drop shadowscreated by xcompmgr don't interfere or look out of place with e17'sdropshadows... really, it's pretty amazing!
Granted, xcompmgr and transparent windows are only usable withproprietary NVIDIA drivers (which I am using), and other people reportgreat success with EXA-enabled drivers and X.Org 6.9/7.0.::snip::

If you run e17 using startx, you can add the foll. line just before your
e17 exec line:

exec gnome-settings-daemon &

This will ensure that gnome-settings-daemon runs in the background. All
Gnome compliant applications talk to this daemon for theme and icon
settings. When you are using Gnome natively, gnome-session runs this for
you.

You can also run this command using a terminal or exige after starting e17
and it will work just fine.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,
Abhas.

Create a gnome-settings-daemon.eap file using:

e_util_eapp_edit gnome-settings-daemon.eap

(The exec should be "gnome-settings-daemon")
When that file is created, make sure you put it here "~/.e/e/applications/all".

Next create a text file with the following:

gnome-settings-daemon.eap

Name the text file ".order", and save it in "~/.e/e/applications/startup".

That will make the gnome-settings-daemon run when you startup e. Also
you will probably want to change the show_desktop setting for
nautilus, otherwise your gnome desktop wallpaper will show up when you
open nautilus. To change that run the "gconf-editor", and uncheck the
"show_desktop" option in "apps/nautilus/preferences".

I think that launching "gnome-settings-daemon &" at E17 startup should
do the trick (e.g. adding the line in your .xsession, or maybe you can
directly ask E17 to launch it)

[e-users] Some feedback

2005-09-14 Thread Fabian Zeindl
Hi

I don't know whether this is the right place to give feedback for E17, I hope
so :-).

E17:
 * It would be great if one could set ordinary pictures (bmp, jpg, png) as
wallpapers without compiling them to edje. For means of simplicity.
 * If you press Alt+Tab and your system goes under heavy load at the moment
the mouse cursor is "trapped" in the "Select a window"-dialog. It always jumps
back to it if you move it.
 * I don't understand why "folding" is not possible for maximized windows.
 * Support for several color themes in one theme file would be cool.
 * I'm pretty sure that this is because of technical circumstances, but the
loading/unloading vs. activating/deactivating of modules is a bit strange
IMHO. Wouldn't it be cool if every module is registered at installation time,
and shown in the popup menues and activating it there will load it (and make
it consume memory)?

Ideas for E17:
 * No window-focus change when you are tipping in a window (type in password
in a shell && instant messenger pops up problem => you type the password in
the wrong window).
 * Gray out non focused windows, or make their borders translucent or
"smaller"/more mimimalistic.
 * only allow resize if you active a window first (to avoid resizing of wrong
windows)
 * configuration of "Masterkey" for hiding/showing all enlightenment widgets
(engage, docker, clock etc.)
 * in a more mature state E17 could be registered at openusability.org to have
usability experts looking at it. (though I'm sure there are already some
doing this).
 * "reservation" of screen edges for applications. for example: applications
like engage "register" actions ("bringing engage in the foreground") at
enlightenment. the user has a small configurations dialog which shows the
screen and all registered actions. he/she can than choose which action to take
on which edge/parts of edje of the screen. (OSX has something like this)
 * all configurationdetails (e17 and plugins) in one dialog (with tabs for
example) instead of the popup submenus would be cool.
 * it would especially be great if one could customize the left/right-click
popup-menus. so when I have a docker running I can remove the "favourite
applications" and the "lost windows" items from the popup menu.

Emotion:
 * Would be cool if emotion would use gstreamer instead of xine-lib

Engage:
 * If you activate "systemtray" and don't have any items in there, there's a
small graphical bug (ugly right edje).
 * If there is more than one instance of the program at the left or right edje
of engage you can't choose all of "small flying icons": If one of the small
icons is even further left than the left "big icon" in engage you can't choose
it (engage "shrinks back").
 * sometimes engage doensn't "expand". You have to move your cursor somewhere
else then and move it back to engagne.
 * activation of startupnotification for an eap doesn't change anything
 * it would be cool if engage would come into foreground if you place mouse
cursor on it, so other windows can lay over it and only a few pixels of engage
at the bottom of the screen could be used to call it in the foreground.

Entice:
 * a bit confusing, cause you don't know where the UI elements are if they are
hidden

Entangle:
 * scrollwheel support would be cool :-)

This are my ideas for making the greatest windowmanager/desktopshell I know
even greater (IMHO :-) ).

greetings and many thanks for the great work!

The manual page for xbindkeys includes some examples, but doesn't list
all the keys (it says the list is under /usr/include/X11/keysym.h). I'm
sure you could use control + button to start a program:

(from xbindkeys man page)
# Control + mouse button 1 starts an xterm
"xterm" /(replace this cmd with something like "transset-df
--min 0.1 -p --dec 0.1")/

Control + b:1

but I dont know if you could do it with a key combination that the
application or window manager already intercepts.

I would prefer to be able to put modules on a higher stacking, instead
of having them drawn in the lowest evas.
would something like drawing it on an upper evas, just like root

ok, surely I would be missing many eye candies, but it would be useful

check at config.log last ~100 lines, the reason for failure will
probably be there.

Anyway, if configure script gives you such error, something bad.
Either with autofoo stuff or with your system (permissions, libs,

We all decided it wasn't going to work :( e17 modules would not work
because they are designed to be loaded at runtime, but Windows has lots
of limitations with regards to this, and edje files wouldn't display
properly because the cygwin C library didn't support the C99 "%a"
formatter (I didn't dig in the code to find how this is used however).

But I get my eyecandy fix when I have to work on windows by changing
skins with WindowBlinds (www.windowblinds.net). ;)

> What do you think about something like porting E17 to Windows platform?

that depends what you mean by "for windows" as i gather bb4win is like
litestep, windows blinds etc. it actually is a WINDOWS app and changes the look
of WINDOWS - it isnt an x app.

what has been tried before is to get E17 to run within an xserver under cygwin
(thus it still manages ONLY x apps) but this wont' work because e is too
complex for cygwin to handle (the simple answer).

what you, i think, are after, is a native windows wm version of e17. ie a
explorer shell replacement built from e.

the answer: no. won't happen. simply no chance. not a single dev will spend the
time on this. we dont USE windows. we dont develop for it. we frankly, don't
care. it is NOT worth the effort. now if some other develoepr wants to port e
libs to windows (NATIVE - not under cygwin) and then go build a explorer shell
replacement using them - sure, go for it. we will accept patches as logn as
they are clean and dont make the code a jungle of #ifdef's and make pain for us
on the unix side, but we won't be doing this ourselves at any point in the
future i can dream of.

and here is where everyone forgets the problems with this. so now u set a bg.
how do u knwo if you want to scale it to fit the screen? scale and retain
aspect? simply center it? tile it? tile with what starting co-ordinate?...
suddenyl we need to save all this information too per image. edje ALREADY does
this. and a LOT more. when u make the .edj u SAVE the infor as to HOW the image
is to be displayed WITH the image data (and more). the solution is to make
better TOOLS to PRODUCE the .edj's from your photo gallery

like example:

e_make_wallpaper -scaled porn.jpg porn.edj
e_make_wallpaper -tiled grass.png grass.edj
etc.

now you have encoded exactly how to display the image WITH the image. you caqn
now give the .edj to your friends and whoever and they dont have to figure out
if its meant to be tiles, scaled or whatever.

this sounds like a bug - can you give mroe details?

because theres more than 1 kind of maximize. i listed a whole lot in the TODO
file. thats why e has maximize policy selection too. e by default takes 1 kind
of maximise as the way to go - windows-ey style.

in theory themes support recolouring compltely via color classes, but there are
no examples of this yet nor is it fully supported or tested. its low priority
atm.

loading a module basically registers it. it consumes memory for the code, but
nothing else. an unloaded module consumes NO resources EXCEPT disk space - ever.

imho eventuallly 3rd party moduels shoudl come with small installer programs
that load (and enable) the moduel by askign E to do it, add the moduel install
path etc. to e's module search path and so on. i dont have any examples to
point to that do all of this, but engage is not far off. :)

we don't know if you are typing in a window. e doesnt get key press events. the
client program gets them. it has no idea whats going on.

that's entirely up to the theme :) it can do whatever it likes. the default
simply changes the titlebar as such.

not much use in sloppy or pointer focus - but maybe click to focus, BUt then
again - the click then resize will activate the window and resize, so... not
much point there. :)

openusability has managed to make gnome much less usable. i think we can do
well on our own. i prefer to get feedback from users like you than "usability
experts" some things useds say are very insightful and useful, others are
useless or impossible to do, but somewhere in the middle we will meet and make
something good :) right now priority is to get everything up and runing as it
was long ago and build from there. it won't all be perfect, BUT over time it
will improve. :)

once compiled and installed the soruce tree is not needed anymore. you can do
what you want with it.

I looked at the screenshots and videos. For example the FX videos[1]
look very impressive. Will such effects be available for E17 in future?

And I couldn't see if this are pseudo-shadows or real-shadows, but they
look really good[2]. Is Windows at this point technical "better" than X?
