[e-users] e20 window display problem

2015-12-28 Thread Andreas Volz
Hello,

I just updated from e19 to e20 on my ubuntu system.

Now there is a strange effect if I start new windows from my e20
session. It seems only E internal and e based apps have this problem
(e.g. terminology). Maybe others too, but I didn't see it.

The window frame appears just half a second before the content is
displayed and while this time the E background is displayed in this
frame. I see my background icons in the new window frame. Then the real
content is displayed. Looks strange and annoying.

I you don't understand the problem I'll try to create a video with my
mobile and send you a link.

Anyway, the Exebuf-mode does not allow me to execute scripts from

i put scripts in ~/s. i just went to e's environment config and
explicitly set my PATH to include /home/raster/s (along with the

path needed either. the PATH env is used. empty xephyr window pops up

Today I tried it again and it works. Even if I create new scripts in
~/bin. But I'm 100% sure it wasn't working! And I didn't recompile

 Hi all.

Since my distro went to Gnome3 Gtk3 ... I haven't been able to get
Gtk theming working under E17. I used to start gnome-settings-daemon
by adding it to my ~/.e/e/applications/startup/.order

This no longer works. I've also tried toggling E17's Settings == Apps
== Desktop Environments == 'Start GNOME services on login'. This
doesn't work either. I get the default Gtk2 / Gtk3 theme, which looks
 like arse.

I can use a tool like lxappearance to set my ~/gtk-3.0/settings.ini
and ~/.gtkrc-2.0 ... but this doesn't seem to work for Gtk3 apps ( it
does for Gkt2 apps ), and also it's not in sync with what I've
 selected under Gnome3.

Is there some trick to getting theming of Gtk2 Gtk3 apps working by
 using gnome-settings-daemon?

 Thanks.

i'd generally say using the c api is the best way to use efl. of
course it works inside c++. it just has a c api. that's all. c++
bindings give you a c+ +-like oo api to efl, but be aware they they
will sometimes be incomplete and not support some features the c api
 has.

I'm developing the C++ API (EFLxx). It's like raster said. It's really
usable for most EFL libraries. I use them everyday since some years,
but the API is still not frozen and not all functions are wrapped. It's
no problem for me, because if I need a new feature in my applications I
just enhance the API. :-)

But if you just like to concentrate on your application and never touch
the library, then go with C API for now. The C API is really good and
stable. But it's your decision!

The only problem with pulseaudio I found on my brothers old system was

 Thank you Andreas,

I am afraid it does not solve my case. The below windows

This may help for the gkrellm problem. At least that

initial position problem. Could you please test it again
with the new options and report the result here?

I would, but I don't know how to install what you have
commited using my Gentoo OS and layman. It reports a
 different revision:

 * Running command /usr/bin/svn up /var/lib/layman/efl...
 At revision 50085.

(sorry but my knowledge of layman is limited).

I think the biggest issue here is that the new(est) code for
layout does not account for shelves which do not take up the
whole region. What I mean by this is simply this (example):

Shelves which are placed on the bottom (or any position for
that matter), are assumed to take up the whole width/height
of the zone (in the new code). The old(er) code accounted
for the possibility that shelves are not taking up all that
space (ie: the shelf is set to 'shrink w/ content').

So what we see happening here is the new layout code assumes
the shelf takes up the whole width of the zone/screen, so it
places gkrellm not at the bottom right (where it should be),
but rather placing it as if the shelf takes up the whole zone
 width.

It's my 'theory' that the new placement code needs to account
for shelves which do not take up all the available space
just a theory mind you :) as I don't know all that code real
well. This would not require any new config variables or
anything ... just some changes in the layout code to account
for shelves which are not taking up all the space.

I apologize if this does not make any sense ... difficult to
 articulate what I mean :)

Yes, exactly what you say makes perfect sense to me and
perfectly describes my observation! I have a wide screen
laptop and the shelf both horizontally or vertically does not
cover the whole desktop width/height. On a smaller
screen/resolution it would probably cover the whole width so
this issue would not be noticed.

Exactly ! (I experience the same problem here)

I think it's just a small over-sight wrt shelf size. Should not
be too big of a deal to change, but again, I don't know that
code all that well.

It's hard to fill your wishes. I'll explain you why:

The _e_zone_useful_geometry_calc() in e_zone.c calculates the
useful space on the screen for windows. This includes moving after

Re: [e-users] [RFC] Internationalisation support in Edje

2010-07-12 Thread Andreas Volz
Am Fri, 9 Jul 2010 18:57:49 +0200 schrieb Cedric BAIL:

 Hi folks,

I have been spending some time thinking about internationalization
for edje file lattely with a few people around. So here are a
technical proposal that I can implement at the end of Edje file format
rewrite. As it will touch every one, I did include more than just dev
 mailing-list.

First to put some background around this proposal. We want to push
more the use of Edje for application layout (thanks to the always
improving Elementary external support). This mean that a lot of string
end up inside the Edje file. And they will depend on the Edje file
content. So it's not really acceptable to set the text from outside of
Edje. We want to distribute themes with their translation easily, we
have one efficient file to distribute, eet, and it should stay that
 way.
Gettext is huge, but it lack the possibility to use pointer to
memory as a possible dictionnary, so we can't easily use it with eet
file. But their is a lot of tools around gettext to manipulate .pot
and .po files. So we need to follow gettext file format or it will
make translator life a bit to hard.
Some language would need to completly change the edje layout, look
at GNOME Arabic support to see what I mean. They basically move widget
around. This would require to localize group inside edje and add a lot
of code around that. I don't want to support that kind of use case.
It's highly specific, and people that want to do so, should support it
 in their apps.
From this, I want to only support text, but not with gettext help
still by using its pot and po files.

So here we go, I want to add to edje_cc scanner the detection of
this kind of syntax: _(TEXT_ID) in every exposed string to the user.
Maybe, I should be able to add another stage before CPP, that would
move /// comments to another form, so that they are still available
when doing the parsing and could be added during .pot generation. In
the case of _(TEXT_ID), edje_cc will store a NULL in the string
pointer and a new index (int) will be added to all structure in Edje
that need it. After the parsing stage, I will generate a mapping from
ID to unique number, that may take into account a preexisting mapping
description file (this should prevent the loss of translation where
commented part would have been removed from the resulting mapping, so
preserving all already existing translation). When this mapping is
done, all int inside Edje structure will be update correctly, and the
mapping will be saved inside an eet section
 (edje/localization/mapping).
Edje will also not generate any file if the target exist and does
have a localized content, if you don't provide a specific command line
 argument.
Translation will just be stored as an array of string where NULL
 mean no translation.
Edje_calc will check if a string is NULL and mapping index 0, if
so it will load the right array of string and just jump at the right
index. If their is no translation, it will fallback to a default
 language in that case

A few new tools:
 - edje_xgettext will generate the .pot file from the Edje mapping
 information.
 - edje_msgfmt will insert a .po inside an existing Edje in a Eet
section (edje/localization/en_us) as a array of string (not
translated string will be NULL). It should show the percent of
translated string and do some check if the translation already exist
(like overridding existing content and stuff like that).
 - edje_msgunfmt will extract a .po from an Edje file.
 - edje_locale will display statistic of all translation of an Edje
 file.
 - edje_locale_default will alias a translation as Eet section
(edje/localization/default) that will be used by edje_calc.

 And that's all ! What's your opinion ?

Nice idea!

Will this break all existing Edj files? Or is this change binary
backwards compatible?

regards
Andreas

allow the gkrellm to be positioned at the bottom of the screen -
which is really what I was after.

I added two new configuration options in the window geometry settings.
See the commit it should explain it. But it's easy to understand from
the option text.

Please test if this solves all your use cases or if still a problem
exists.

The SVN commit number for this change is 50083.

This may help for the gkrellm problem. At least that gkrellm moves up
on repaint. Maybe it doesn't solve the initial position problem. Could
you please test it again with the new options and report the result
here?

Andreas

I have added gkrellm at the startup apps for some time now, but as I

More/Remember/Name+Position, but it is still being pushed up.

 Any ideas?

Yes, I've an idea. I did some commits in e_zone.c and e_border.c do fix
some bugs in this area. I tested my use cases for around a week and it
worked. Nice. Maybe I missed your use case.

In trunk/TEST/app/e/e_place_test I implemented a little application

and how to correct handle it. Could you make a screenshot with some red

HiAndreas, where would you like me to upload the screenshots?

The behaviour of gkrellm is akin to dragging one of the desktop icons
(e.g. the home or temp directory icon) to the bottom of the screen.
When you release your mouse the icon is pushed upwards until it
clears the height of the shelf on the bottom of the screen.

With gkrellm this does not happen instantaneously, so it gives the
impression that you can manually drag and drop gkrellm below the
region of the shelf. However, when the gkrellm window dimensions is
redrawn; e.g. when the wireless gkrellm drops the connection and
collapses or when it is reinstated and expands, then the gkrellm is
pushed upwards until it clears the height of the shelf.

You could upload images here for free:

http://imageshack.us/

Could you please try to set the allow window overlap option in the
settings tab of the problematic shelf. The window placement algorithm
ignores overlap shelfes.

The replacement if windows with icccm request is needed as many apps
have to brain dead logic that they always show the most important parts
below shelfes or offscreen.

Please tell me if this solves your problem.

Hello Nicole,

I tried the same but with the C++ binding. The results I had were the
same. It seems you couldn't position a Elm widget direct into a Edje
SWALLOW. All widgets need to be placed into a ElmBackground object to
get the correct position calculation. This was at least my experience.

So if you place a ElmBackground into the SWALLOW and then a ElmWidget
then it may work. But I assume this isn't what you like to do. :-(

I assume you like to position your Elm layout with Editje or
Edje_Editor? There was some speech about EXTERNAL edje types in the
past. But I'm not sure about the status. Maybe someone else could
answer it?

[e-users] New Trac Wiki

2009-04-19 Thread Andreas Volz
Hello,

as I found out now there's a new wiki:

http://trac.enlightenment.org/e/wiki

to replace the old one:

http://wiki.enlightenment.org/index.php/Main_Page

It doesn't worth to discuss about that change, because it seems the
decision has yet took place...

The only thing that I now could do is to please all people helping to
migrate the useful information from the old wiki to the new wiki.

I started with some articles and marked them as old.

As you could see I marked them with:

'''This page has moved to [new trac wiki URL]. Don't do any more edits
here!'''

Then I removed the group tag and if available the link from the refering
page.

There are still some contents on get-e.org that I've linked as
reference. Not sure if they're still usable. I think it's a little out
dated and could only be used very selective.

Now please go on and move your pages from the old to the new wiki. I'll
do so from time to time when I like to edit something.

Andreas

 very stable api.

Ok, so I may start to write a C++ wrapper. :-)

Another question:

Is Elementary meant to replace the internal E widgets in the long term?
This would save the need to maintain two widgets sets and also ease the
theme creating.

I decided against ETK or EWL because they were not fitting for me.
  Several reasons...

My application has no mouse or touchscreen input. I control it with

controlled from a joystick dispatcher. So all widgets needs to be
fully controlled with the public API and not only by mouse or

as a matter of fact.. no. not currently. elementary currently is
entirely designed around touchscreen input. maybe in future it will
gain control from keypads/keyboard focus etc. etc. but right now its
 pretty much touchscreen.

Ok, I'll test if it fits for my purposes.

It may not cover your other reasons you chose not to use it, but EWL
is completely controllable via it's API.

It would fit, but it has no composite support (latest time I
looked in the source). :-(

[e-users] Fullscreen mode for games?

2008-07-18 Thread Andreas Volz
Hello,

I notices a strange thing while playing fullscreen games like
frozen-bubble or supertux. After ~ 10 min the game goes from fullscreen
to window mode and focus is lost. Then ~ 5 seconds later the fullscreen
mode is restored. This is a very strange problem. First I thought it
may be the screensaver or screen lock. But I've both deactivated.

Any ideas what is going on here? I never experienced a similar problem
in Gnome. The only difference compared to fullscreen application is
that I don't use the mouse. Is there a logic in E17 that could produce
this problem?

The same here from a long time, dunno why :(

Now I noticed, that if I don't touch the system for some minutes the
screen blanks black. I didn't really pay attention to this before. But
it's not related to E17 as I deactivated xscreensaver and screen lock.

Maybe it's because I start gnome-settings-daemon. I'll try to reproduce
it without. Do you run gnome-settings-daemon too?

[e-users] Gnome applet in E17

2008-02-06 Thread Andreas Volz
Hello,

is there an E17 module to hold a Gnome applet in it? I think this could
be technical possible. I only ask because the Ubuntu update-notifier is
currently the only reason not to use E17 on my Laptop.

Or has anyone started to write a frontend for the update-notifier. I
looked into the update-notifier code. It does very much depend on Gtk
and would be much work to rewrite for E17.

So perhaps it might be a good idea to have a E17 module that is able to
hold Gnome applets. But I'm not sure.

work to a sub-proc to avoid blocking-reads of temp sensor data that
seemed to make e jerky whenever the temperature was polled (e would
pause for like 200ms or so whole waiting on the kernel to respond to
the read). if it changed in the last week then i may have made a
mistake - otherwise its likely something else. changed kernels?
 modules not loaded?

Maybe I changed a kernel version, but not a relevant jump. See the
output of sensors executed by the same user who started e17.

[e-users] E17 Gnome compatibility

2007-09-22 Thread Andreas Volz
Hello,

 Enlightenment CVS committal

 Author : raster
 Project : e17
 Module : apps/e

 Dir : e17/apps/e/src/modules/wizard
 ...
 + *(current e defaults, windows-style or mac-style?).
+ * o ask for what default wallpaper to use.
+ * o ask if the user wants gnome or kde support
+ *(for gnome run gnome-settings-daemon, unknown for kde).

I run E17, but use many Gnome and Gtk applications. So I'm still
searching for the best Gnome compatibility. Here are my experiences:

o Use a .gtkrc-2.0:

+ Seems to be the easiest way to get Gtk support.
+ Easy to change with editor or various tools.
- All the nice Gnome tools for menu settings size settings and other
stuff doesn't work.

0 Use gnome-settings-daemon:
+ Full Gnome support
+ Easy to use
+ All Gnome preference dialogs like fonts, menus, themes,... work.
+ Nice tools like gnome-keyring-manager are started
- The gnome-settings-daemon seems to grab some key bindings (e.g. volume
control on multimedia keyboards).
- The Gnome screensaver and password dialog doesn't work good in a E17
environment (sure it could be deactivated).

0 Use xfce4-settings manager
+ Works similar to the gnome-settings-daemon
+ Like with gnome-settings-daemon a set of tools to configure lookfeel
- same cons as with gnome-settings-daemon

I'm not happy with any of the solutions. How do you use E17 and
Gnome/Gtk app together?

I thought about forking gnome-settings-daemon. Then I could use all
good things from it and remove all stuff that I don't like/need in E17.
In combination with smart Gnome settings this should work the best.

Andreas

Re: [e-users] Ewl and Etk Themes

To change the theme for etk, you can use etk_prefs. This requires
the theme to be in .e/etk/themes. As for ewl, check the theme are
you trying to use, as an incomplete theme would result in a black
window. And yes, --ewl-theme does work.

Two comments to etk_prefs:

- etk_prefs from current CVS isn't working. I couldn't change configure
sections.

- Why not providing (an alternative) 3rd party E17 conf module for etk
configuration. I think this would easy configuration consistency.

it's not being added back because it's generally a silly feature

What is the difference to the desktop icons like trash, home folder and
mount points? They're also covered by windows all the time. I don't
think that one could argument that way. I could for example imagine
that one screen holds all my nice and useful desktop modules. If I open
no window there I've no problems. Don't assume how anybody uses a
desktop environment. :-)

it is a dubiously useful feature. patches accepted.

This is good to read. In the past I waited for this feature to come
back. Now I know that it'll not come back from alone. My knowledge of
the EFL is growing more and more, but I never hacked in E itself. Are
there any experienced E developers that like this feature too and will
spend work for a solution?

[e-users] Debian Etch e17 packages

Hello,

are there any E17 packages for Debian Etch somewhere? I would also be
happy if the packages are some month old. I simply like to test the E17

Installing from CVS isn't an option, because the laptop is too small to

The app dir has at least another problem. I wasn't able to create a

I'll do an update the next days. Perhaps this problem got fixed.

BTW: I know currently we use .desktop instead of edj files for the

animations. It doesn't work if I write it into .order and doesn't work
if I set it as .desktop icon. So how could I do this?

[e-users] Not working .desktop application

2007-07-07 Thread Andreas Volz
Hi,

I try to start the gnome-settings-daemon at E17 startup. So I created a
gnome-settings-daemon.desktop in /home/andreas/.e/e/applications/all
with this content:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Gnome Settings Daeom
Comment=
Exec=/usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon
Icon=
Terminal=0
Type=Application
Categories=Graphics;Application

Then a .order file in /home/andreas/.e/e/applications/startup with this
content:

gnome-settings-daemon.desktop

But it doesn't start at startup time. I tried other applications and
they work well. The gnome-settings-daemon works also well if I exec it
from command line. So why doesn't it work as expected?

not sure then. e will execute the app. if it is an app (from
a .desktop file) it will snarf the stdout/in, track return code etc.
so it fully reports errors etc. if it's not (just a cmd-line) it will
simply spawn it off and forget about it. replace xte with something
like date $HOME/test-run-time and check that file. you will find

Result: Di Dez 5 18:07:25 CET 2006

it is being run. the rest is either that xte is not in $PATH (thus
provide a full path to it) or xte itself after being executed aborts
 before it does anything.

If I run xte with this command from E it works:

xte 'mousemove 100 100' 'mousedown 1' 'mousemove 200 200' 'mouseup 1'

The cursor is moved as it should. So I assume xte is found in the path.

But the key-command does only work in E if I call it with xterm:

xterm -e xte 'sleep 0.5' 'keydown Control_L' 'key v' 'keyup Control_L'

The xte command isn't given to the xterm, it's e.g. given to the before
selected OpenOffice window and insert the clipboards data. (OK)

Any idea why it works inside a xterm, but not direct? It's a little
interfering to see a xterm opening each time.

no idea - e just executes the command as given and will redirect
stdout/err/in to itself to capture error logs etc.

Is there a difference between how E17 keybindings and the Command

Other xte command that controls the mouse are working in E17. Perhaps
it's really a problem that E captures the stdin/err/out. Could I

Hi,

I noticed only one problem with current E17 and enlightenment_start.
The binary like to launch enlightenment, but on Gentoo this is
enlightenment-0.17. Sure, I could patch this in my local installation,
but perhaps the E17 gentoo maintainer reads this and knows a better
way.

I have to ask.. what does this option do? I've never noticed any
difference with it either on nor off..

It seems not to work for some time, but with the current CVs it's
working and I love it! You could configure which modules aren't
overlapped by maximizing windows. In my configuration is:

Not Overlap:
- Pager, Network, Ibar, Ibox

Overlap:
- Clock (and I hope calendar in future)

So if I maximize a window it does never overlap modules that are
important for me. I don't need to see the calendar everytime, but I
don't like to overlap the Ibar.

so basically it looks like your system is spending most of its time
inside libc (you have no debug symbols so we cant say any mroe than
that) and the kernel. as i mailed in another mail - try modifying the
source (see my other mails in thsi thread) and put in printf's with
timestamps to idnetify the areas of the show routine thata re using
 up all the wall-clock time.

Ok, I'll try this next weekend if no solution was found until then.
Perhaps it's an interesting information that it takes nearly the same
time if I press TAB-TAB in an empty bash command and the system
collects all executables. It's interesting that after I did this the
exebuf comes up very fast.

 [TAB-TAB]
Display all 3225 possibilities? (y or n)

Are 3225 executables very much? I tested it on a Debian System with
1049 possibilities and it was _much_ faster (this system/harddisk
is also much slower). So perhaps it's usefull to know the distribution
of all the people with the same problem.

[e-users] exebuf preload?

2006-02-03 Thread Andreas Volz
Hi,

shortly I started to work with exebuf and think it's a really cool
feature. More as a simple starting dialog. But if I start the exebuf
for the first time in an E session or not for a long time while an E
session the exebuf needs some time to load (here: up to 10sec). While
this wait time E is frozen. This is very bad for a fast application
starting tool. Isn't it possible to improve this situation?

could u use oprofile and get us an oprofile dump for the time just

Sure, but I never used oprofile before. It's in Gentoo portage, so I've
installed it now. But what exactly do you need? How should I execute it
to create this dump?

there is an oprofile gui (written using qt) and you can start/stop
profiling using that (on debian its oprof_start run it as root) there
is a command-line tool you can get a profile dump with: opreport
 --symbol

I start oprof_start as root and this dialog warns me:
--
/usr/bin/opcontrol return 1
Failed:
FATAL: Module oprofile not found
FATAL: Module oprofile not found
Kernel doesn't support oprofile

Command was:
/usr/bin/opcontrol --init
--

So do I need to activate something in the kernel and recompile? What
should I do?
