Many thanks to everyone for checking out the page! I'm delighted to see
that HTML4 still seems to work. I was worried that the web had evolved
past it (the way my ASCII artwork can no longer be displayed on many
people's computers). :-(

I hadn't thought about how it would be read by the visually impaired.
I'll read that page with the guidelines, and try to apply them in the
future.

Thanks Glen. I didn't realize that there was an automated way to do this
(or I wouldn't have bothered everyone).

I submitted the controllers.htm page and it came up with 16 errors. Some
were mismatched and tags, which I fixed. But most were omission
of the ALT= attribute in IMG tags. I used TITLE= instead. ALT only
displays the text name when I right-click an image and look at its
Properties. TITLE does this, *and* causes the text name for the image to
be displayed when I mouse over the image. I guess I have to use both
attributes.

The Henneys were built in 1959. Only about 100 were made, but it was a
very influential EV. As a car, the Renault was a pile of sh... well, you
know. But its performance and use of silicon diodes was revolutionary,
and every engineer knew all about it.

My guess is that Clark/Hyster copied the Henney's controller, rather
than the other way around. The Henney's definitely had a hand-made
first-prototype look to it, and there were no Clark labels on it.

I changed the contactor coils to 12 volt, most were 36-48 volt. You could do
that back then,
even change the tips when they wore out, I always put the silver tips
on the contactors, they lasted 4 times as long.

Yep! I liked those old contactors. *Anything* could be changed or fixed.
I rebuilt worn-out surplus ones for my first EV. I filed off the burned
contacts and silver-soldered dimes to them (of course, dimes were
actually made of silver back then)! :-)

No cables needed: BMW and Daimler working on wireless

 for EVs

 Wireless Charging Technology
 ]

With the help of BMW and Daimler, electric vehicles are
 taking the next step
 toward worry-free ownership.

The German automakers recently announced a joint effort to
 develop a
wireless charging system for the i3 electric vehicle and i8
 plug-in hybrid.

EVs don’t need oil changes, filter replacements, or
 emissions testing, so
they’re already extremely convenient to own. If the
 inductive wireless
charging technology is viable, EV owners won’t even need
 to worry about
 refueling.

BMW and Daimler’s charging tech works in the same way
 wireless cell phone
chargers do, just on a larger scale. An alternating magnetic
 field transmits
energy between two sets of coils: one mounted onto the
 car’s parking area
(usually a garage floor), and a secondary coil on the
 vehicle itself.

The array transmits energy at a charging rate of 3.6
 kilowatts, which,
according to BMW, is enough to fully charge an i8 in under
 two hours. The
German engineers predict they can increase that rate to 7.0
 kW in the
 future.

The circular design of the coils comes in a compact,
 lightweight package
that is equal parts subtle and slick. The floor-mounted
 baseplate will
function even when exposed to rain and snow, and the car’s
 receiver coil can
be activated with the push of a button.

To keep the neighborhood cats safe and grounded, the current
 is
automatically shut off if any foreign bodies are detected.
 BMW allows users
to monitor the charging process with the i Wallbox and
 accompanying
 smartphone app.

As always, BMW strives to be an innovator. In May, the
 German company
announced a solar-powered carport that would allow i3 and i8
 owners to
charge their vehicles easily and conveniently at home.

The i Solar Concept gathers energy from the sun and funnels
 it into the
customer’s car. If the vehicle is charged, owners can
 siphon excess power
into their residence. The carport is even made from green
 materials like
bamboo and carbon fiber, making the energy source as
 sustainable as the cars
 themselves.

yet--several are telling customers it could be next week--and its EPA
ratings for range and efficiency have been something of a mystery too.

Now, courtesy of an alert electric-car fan, we know the ratings for the
first battery-electric vehicle sold as a Mercedes.

The range of the B-Class is given by the EPA as 87 miles, and its combined
efficiency is 84 MPGe. (Miles Per Gallon Equivalent, or MPGe, is the
distance an electric car can cover on the amount of energy contained in 1
gallon of gasoline.)

Those aren't particularly stellar ratings, as the following chart shows:

 - 2014 BMW i3 (battery-electric): Range 81 miles, efficiency 124 MPGe
(combined)

 - 2014 Mercedes-Benz B-Class: Range 87 miles, efficiency 84 MPGe (combined)

 - 2014 Nissan Leaf: Range 84 miles, efficiency 114 MPGe (combined)

 - 2014 Tesla Model S (85-kWh): Range 265 miles, efficiency 89 MPGe
(combined)

There are plenty of other battery-electric cars for sale in limited parts of
the country, but the three listed above (besides the Mercedes) are likely to
be the highest-volume entrants in the market next year.

Reader Ray Davis found those B-Class ratings only by doing a "Compare Cars"
on the EPA's FuelEconomy.gov website.

But here's a similar comparison [
http://fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=35207&id=35247&id=34699&id=34775
], so you can see for yourself.

In the end, the B-Class proves to be slightly less efficient than the Tesla
Model S but have a slightly longer rated range than the BMW i3 against which
it is often compared.

And that's likely due to its origins as a gasoline- and diesel-engined
vehicle, with a full steel body, that's been converted to electric
operation.

We suspect the electric B-Class will likely sell in smaller numbers than the
mass-market Leaf, the glamorous and long-range Tesla, and probably the BMW
i3 as well.

Next year's sales data will tell.

No cables needed: BMW and Daimler working on wireless charging technology

Wireless Charging Technology
]

With the help of BMW and Daimler, electric vehicles are taking the next step
toward worry-free ownership.

The German automakers recently announced a joint effort to develop a
wireless charging system for the i3 electric vehicle and i8 plug-in hybrid.

EVs don’t need oil changes, filter replacements, or emissions testing, so
they’re already extremely convenient to own. If the inductive wireless
charging technology is viable, EV owners won’t even need to worry about
refueling.

BMW and Daimler’s charging tech works in the same way wireless cell phone
chargers do, just on a larger scale. An alternating magnetic field transmits
energy between two sets of coils: one mounted onto the car’s parking area
(usually a garage floor), and a secondary coil on the vehicle itself.

The array transmits energy at a charging rate of 3.6 kilowatts, which,
according to BMW, is enough to fully charge an i8 in under two hours. The
German engineers predict they can increase that rate to 7.0 kW in the
future.

The circular design of the coils comes in a compact, lightweight package
that is equal parts subtle and slick. The floor-mounted baseplate will
function even when exposed to rain and snow, and the car’s receiver coil can
be activated with the push of a button.

To keep the neighborhood cats safe and grounded, the current is
automatically shut off if any foreign bodies are detected. BMW allows users
to monitor the charging process with the i Wallbox and accompanying
smartphone app.

As always, BMW strives to be an innovator. In May, the German company
announced a solar-powered carport that would allow i3 and i8 owners to
charge their vehicles easily and conveniently at home.

The i Solar Concept gathers energy from the sun and funnels it into the
customer’s car. If the vehicle is charged, owners can siphon excess power
into their residence. The carport is even made from green materials like
bamboo and carbon fiber, making the energy source as sustainable as the cars
themselves.
