Re: [EVDL] warp 9 has gone sparky sparky
I had a lot of troubles with sparking when I bought my conversion with an Advanced DC motor. It was running in reverse without the timing adjusted. It ended up melting some brush springs and part of the brush holder. After changing all the brushes, springs, and the brush holder, it has been working fine for 25k miles. Make sure your motor rotation and timing match. In my case, the motor was reversed because Honda motors turn opposite most other vehicles. [EVDL] Solar for my EV
Finally finished my solar pier enough to take some pictures. See: http://aprs.org/solar-on-piers.html Right now it consists of five 12' floating sections with 2 panels each. I can build one more section and two more finger piers and still fit within my pier permit eventually. This began in 2009 until the State of Maryland denied my application because nothing is allowed on piers unless it pertains to your boat. SO uyou can put a gas station on your pier to service your gas burning, bay fouling, air polluting, noisy, stink-pot-boat, but you cannot put solar panels on a pier to power your electric boat and run the exceeds back into the grid for our house. After 4 years of my lobbying efforts, $2000 in fees and two hearings, the law was finally changed and now, last weekend I finished it enough to take some pictures. Should add enough juice to do all my EV driving. Bob, WB4APR -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [EVDL] Lithium batteries direct from China
I have 16 20Ah GBS cells and all of them off gas what smells like the electrolyte solution. Put them in an enclosed box for a few days and it is really obvious! I have not detected this with my TS or CALB cells. I'm concerned that either the plastic, vent seals, and/or the terminal seals are leaking. Also, the GBS cells appear to be "softer" than the TS or GBS cells tho I don't have raw data to back that up. [EVDL] International Plug In Day in Hermosillo MX
Hi all, This weekend was the International Plug In Day in Hermosillo MX ( http://www.diadelautoelectrico.org/). It was great! There were 3 cars from Tucson, my 2000 Insight (hybrid), EV Jerry took his Spirit of DC (Prius) and Clarence trailered his Karmen Ghia conversion. We had a police escort from the Nogales border to Hermosillo since we were supposed to have some more cars, including a Tesla Roadster, but they couldn't make it. Here are some pics https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1484531351817028.1073741832.1455012504 768913&type=1 The organizer was Marco Gaxiola https://www.facebook.com/MarcoGaxiolaM He got Nissan to send 2 Leafs and they gave lots o rides to the crowd. There were 2 people ready to buy the Leafs right then! It was really fun to explain everything, and since my Spanish is so bad, I always got somebody to translate what I was explaining, which gave me a little time to think about the next thing I was going to say. And the questions were so great, so much interest. I think they are very tired of gasoline. I found the enthusiasm very real and sincere. There were also electric bikes and segways that were constantly being ridden around. Marco had 2 of his EVSE's to show off along with some of the EV equipment that he is selling on line, www.energyev.com and I brought one of my TucsonEV-SE's to show off. It was a very productive weekend for EV's Rush Dougherty www.TucsonEV.com ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org For EV drag racing discussion, please use NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)

Re: [EVDL] warp 9 has gone sparky sparky
I second that, especially with a lot of grit from offroad driving getting into your motor, there is a good chance that brushes have worn faster than usual and are now at the end of spring travel. Brushes without enough force to push them onto the comm become spark generators. They are also easy to check without removing the motor, so first make sure the brushes are in good shape before thinking about other work on the motor. Back in September 2012 we saw Nissan displaying the e-NV200 as a panel van and now two years later at the same show they are exhibiting a VIP version equipped with "Club Class" rear seats covered in white leather with blue accents. These come with integrated seatbelts, armrests and extending leg rests. Also in the back there's a 21.5-inch DSP monitor displaying images and movies provided by the passenger's smartphone, tablet or laptop. Rear passengers benefit from up to 670mm of legroom and between the seats there's a central console featuring controls for the ambient lighting, monitor and also providing access to a small fridge holding drinks. Up front incorporated in the structure of the conventional rear view mirror is Nissan's Smart Rear-View mirror which has an LCD monitor working with a high-resolution camera mounted at the back of the car to provide a better view of the traffic behind. On the outside it wears a two-tone paint while power is provided by the same Leaf-sourced electric motor rated at 109 HP (80 kW) and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) which works with a 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack. According to Dany Boulenger, Nissan's Global Corporate Sales, Division General Manager, some of the extra equipment installed on the e-NV200 VIP concept could be offered as aftermarket conversions if there will be enough demand. BMW sells a very nice looking charger, the BMW i Charging Station, for $1,080 and as with all other chargers installation is extra. However, it was the BMW Wallbox Pro which BMWBLOG reported on from the BMW i8 launch back in April that I really, really wanted. I was super excited about this particular one because we have a newly installed 12kW solar system in our house and I relished the idea of being able to program where the electricity was to come from to charge our Solar Orange i3. Sadly, this fantastic device is still not available and now word on when it will be. Installing a Level 2 Charger for an electric car So Many Options In The World Of EV Chargers When looking at an electric car charger, it helps to know a bit of the lingo. EV nuts are very particular about their verbiage. Though commonly called a Level 2 Charger, the proper term is Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE) because the actual AC to DC conversion occurs on board the EV itself. It will be hard to break the public of the habit of calling them Car Chargers, as that’s what manufacturers call them. Hitting on the basics of electricity supplies, in the United States a 110V is a common household plug, and 240V is what is used for household electric ovens, dryers and air conditioning units. A 240V outlet can charge an electric vehicle twice as fast as the 110V. A Level 1 Charger, which uses a household 110V current, is good when you are in a pinch – BMW even calls it an “occasional charger” so you get the hint that you need a Level 2 Charger. When it gets to where electricity meets the EV, the SAE J1772 Charging plug is standard for all electric vehicles except the Tesla cars which have a proprietary charging plug. Thanks Elon! Why Do I Need A Level 2 Charger? Installing a Level 2 Charger for an electric car Level 2 Units can charge up to 7.2 kW and pull 30A, and need to be installed on a 40A circuit with 8 gauge wire. There are DC chargers too but they are 480 volts and cost around $8,000. Thankfully the Rapid DC chargers are becoming more common at commercial charging sites on the East and West coast. The DC Charger, CHAdeMO aka a Level 3 Charger, can pump a stunning 62.5 kW of direct current right into the battery. On the BMW i3, it does require an optional $700 factory connector. I am told that this is factory installed only, if you don’t get it at manufacturing of your vehicle, you cannot retrofit it. There are more Level 2 Chargers available than I would have thought. See our table for the most popular ones out there. As Bosch is the manufacturer of BMW’s i Charging Station, I was immediately drawn to it. Bosch’s charger is a much smaller unit with a center holster that docs the J177A Charging Plug. The unit is available with a 18 ft or a 25 ft long cord. The Siemens unit has a very German efficient layout while the GE one looks just like the one that Porsche uses for their plug-in hybrid cars. There’s also a very robust unit from Clipper Creek, the HSC-40 but I didn’t like the lack of contained pl
