I just call the local number for my SC. Usually an option in the menu for
the service.

Occasionally a tech or service center employee has texted/called me before
the appointment to get additional information. In that case I've
texted/called back to that number.

Re: [EVDL] Why people dislike Tesla

2022-05-25 Thread Barry Oppenheim via EV
We've had three Teslas beginning in 2013. Two different service centers.
I wish I could say that I've never needed to use the service centers. But
as an early adopter I was willing to accept some of the "quirks" of the
car.

The majority of issues have been minor and mostly plug and play repairs
(12V batteries, handles, door latches, memory chips, touch screen, charge
port, axle half shafts). Virtually all under warranty. The only major
problem was a drivetrain replacement on our 2013 (gearing problem in first
year Teslas which were subsequently redesigned, replaced under warranty).

On our first Tesla we had flatbed pickup service at our home (for eight
years). They would also drop off a loaner.

Even with the change to the online service scheduling, I've always been
able to talk to a person at the service center. With the caveat that the
majority of the time I leave a message and they call me back. Usually the
same day or next day.

I occasionally will drop by the service center prior to the appointment if
there is an issue that needs a deeper discussion. Again, I've always been
able to talk to someone in person. Not unusual for it to be the service
center manager. The service centers have always addressed my problem and
always resolved them.

Re: [EVDL] Tesla Charge Controller issues.

Have you looked inside at the HV connections? Any scorching on the wires?

I remember that with the original HPWC's people were mentioning that it was
hard to seat and torque the larger gauge wiring sufficiently. Ended up
with failed HPWC's and burnt wiring. Don't know if they fixed it with the
current iteration of HPWC's.

Re: [EVDL] Tesla Remotely Removed Autopilot Features from Used Model S After 'Audit'

2020-02-09 Thread Barry Oppenheim via EV
The buyer of the car did not buy the vehicle from Tesla. He bought if from
a third party.

My understanding is that the car was either a trade in or buy back by
Tesla. Tesla then sold the car at auction to a third party dealer. The
dealer listed the car based on the original sticker features.

Tesla frequently removes upgraded features on resale cars in order to lower
the price and move the vehicle quicker. The FSD was part of the original
car package, but not on the vehicle sold at auction. The only thing
unclear is what features Tesla listed on the vehicle at auction and whether
the dealer thought he bought a car with FSD or new the car did not have
FSD, but priced based on the original sticker.

[EVDL] Fwd: What to do with used LiOn CALB batteries?

2018-09-13 Thread Barry Oppenheim via EV
Thanks to everyone for their advice and input on the Lithium recycling and
re-use. Lot of good ideas out there. Special thanks to Bruce for the
extensive recycling research.

There was so much interest from the group in "recycling" them for other
projects (EV and stationary backup). Since so many people contacted me I
decided give them to the first person who reached out (Bill B). If that
falls through I'll be sure to contact others who were interested.

Thanks again!

Re: [EVDL] What to do with used LiOn CALB batteries?

2018-09-09 Thread Barry Oppenheim via EV
Marco,

Thanks for the suggestion. We actually have solar with battery backup
(FLA). I've thought about adding them to our system. Unfortunately we
have an older charge inverter that doesn't support LiOn charging. I
probably could could find a way to wire the current BMS and batteries into
the system. More of a project time issue.

If we had TOU I definitely would just charge them off the grid and
arbitrage as you suggest. No TOU in PA.

[EVDL] What to do with used LiOn CALB batteries?

2018-09-09 Thread Barry Oppenheim via EV
I recently took my Saturn Vue EV out of service and have 48 LiOn cells in
my garage. I am trying to find a way to *dispose/donate/sell them*.

Does anyone know if *regular metal/battery recyclers* take them? I did try
to give them to someone but the cross country shipping logistics were a
nightmare. I live halfway between Philly and NYC.

If I decide to keep them does anyone see any problems or *safety issues*
having them sit in a heated garage, partially to mostly discharged, for a
couple years?

Cell details
48 Calb 180Ah cells (they have not been charged for at least two years)
The cells were put into service in 2011 and have ~3 miles on them. I
estimate ~500-600 partial charge/discharge cycles.

Barry

Re: [EVDL] Tesla battery fire?

2018-06-18 Thread Barry Oppenheim via EV
"Why burn down the whole car when it can be super easily prevented?"

Actually they did manage to prevent this. Note how the battery design kept
the fire from spreading and contained it within the forward modules of the
battery, allowing it to self extinguish. It also vented the fire away from
the passenger compartment (flames were directed sideways).

Re: [EVDL] 12v tales

2016-06-06 Thread Barry Oppenheim via EV
I've had a few occasions where the DC/DC converter was the only 12V source
for the EV. Under normal circumstances 500W seems fine. Extreme loads
(winter with headlights, full fan, full wipers, lots of braking and vacuum
pump) will trip the fuse/breaker.

Slightly OT, does anyone have a good way to add manual function to a HV
contactor? It would be nice to be able to turn on the DC/DC converter
manually in case of 12V failure without having to rig a jumper. I vaguely
remember that one of the OEM EV's had such a button in the glove
compartment for that exact situation.

Re: [EVDL] Last call for LeSled

2015-06-15 Thread Barry Oppenheim via EV
I also have an EV that works great, is in great condition, but could never
sell because of the market (or lack of) for used DIY EV's. Which leads me
to my point...are we looking at the wrong market?

I was recently in the Carribean and thought that EV's would be great on the
the islands. The combination of high gas prices and lack of need for huge
range makes them perfect. Combine with a smaller solar installation
(electricity prices are also on the higher side) and you come up with a
great win.

There might be an business opportunity for someone to buy used EV's and
resell in the Carribean.

It's not really a new problem. It's always been hard to find someone
interested in buying a conversion, except, perhaps, from with your local EV
interest group.

One of the members of our local EAA chapter converted a 1998 Ford Ranger in
2007. 120 volt, 24 6-volt lead-acid batteries, Russco Charger, DCP Raptor
controller and 9 motor. He spent about $15,000 including the truck and used
it to commute 22 miles to work. In the winter, though, his range was
insufficient so he had to drive his ICE car. He replaced the pack in 2012
for another $2500 or so. When the Leaf came out he bought one and it served
all his commuting needs to he put the truck up for sale for $12000. 18
months later I bought it for $6000.

I have no interest in lead-acid weight, I drove it for a few months then
took it apart to put lithium in. While I thought it would be easy--take out
one set of batteries and put in another--in the end I ended up replacing
everything except the motor, controller and vacuum pump and added a lot of
things to make it much less of a science experiment. I've invested about
$10,000 above the purchase price.

Would anyone here give me $16,000 for it? Even $10,000? Sadly, I doubt it.
And while it's a very nice near-factory-quality EV now, it's still
17 years old. Last week I had a brake line fail and when I pulled the rear
drums off I found one full of oil from a leaking axle seal. $1300 later I
have brand new brakes and lines on the whole rear of the truck.
But who knows what's next.

Thank you Wayne, Cor, and Roland. All good stuff. Which always leads to more
questions :-)

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in the F150 has an input from the throttle
position sensor (TPS). Does reprogramming it with the TCI/Baumann Module allow
you to ignore the TPS?

If not, I'm using a Hall Effect Pedal Assembly(HEPA) that goes directly to the
Hairball module of the Zilla. Is there some way to split the signal from the
HEPA (Hairball and TCM)? If not is there a way to have the Hairball output a
TPS signal or add an analog TPS to the HEPA?

Every one here answered all your questions very good, I to set the kick down at
3/4 travel if it has one, like a 400 or 350, A 727 and 904 also has one ,I do
the same thing.
The 700 R4 early type can do even better in a EV, If you want lock up, I put a
pressure switch on a test port and run 12 volts in and out to lock up the
converter.
I dont mess around with this and that, I take the easy way and the most simple
approach, The EVNetics has a curb idle. I use that. also what wasnt mention is
trans cooling, I use a A/C condenser where the Rad use to sit, put a fan in
front and your done, the trans always runs cool.

When I do a automatic, I dont spend time on the Math of how or why it should
work, they just do and they get out of my shop fast . When George Hanstra came
to my shop, I had just finished my 76 Nova to all electric, we went for a
drive, He was impressed on how it up shifted and down shifted, except for a
small trans cooling hose leak, it worked just like it was suppose to with the 6
cylinder gas engine in it .
I did a Ford E350, 2002 van, it had a over drive automatic, , I installed a
Warp 11 and an EVNetics 1,000 amp controller, installed the shift modual and
road tested it, set shift points , where I liked the way it ran down the road,
trial end error ,, Top speed was about 70 in OD ,this was a 14 passenger van,
not some toy

Wayne,

Couple questions on your response.

You mentioned that you have experimented with different torque converters
and generally keep the stock TC. Can you elaborate on how automatic
shifting performs given the torque curve on electric motors is different
than the ICE torque curve?

How do you determine what parameters (RPM/gear) to use when adjusting the
shift points electronically with an aftermarket computer?

Have you tried without an idling circuit/EVTronics controller (just manually
idling, with brake applied, in order to build up pump pressure)?

When using a stock transmission and TC how does the vehicle perform using
manual shifting of the automatic?

Thoughts on lockup vs non-lockup converters?

Thanks in advance,
Barry

Re: [EVDL] Converting with an Automatic Transmission

2014-11-26 Thread Barry Oppenheim via EV
John,

I'm in the same situation. Planning on converting my F150 next year with
parts from my current EV.

I've been researching this for about a year now. DIYElectricCar forums have
some good discussions if you search. This discussion is one of the better
ones and most relevant to converting an F150/F250:

http://www.diyelectriccar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53052highlight=automa
tic

Another good link is this transmission shop that specifically make
components for using an autotran in an EV:
http://www.fbperformance.com/ViewTransmission/?TransmissionID=100

Also there is a Porsche conversion on EVAlbum. (I don't have that link
offhand.)

Bottom line is if you want automatic shifting then you'll need to install a
low stall torque converter. And you'll need to change shift points
electronically.

If you want to shift manually you may be able to get away with just a full
manual throttle body. With the second option you either have to rev a
little at initial takeoff to increase tranny line pressure. Or get an
external pump plumbed into the tranny lines. Or make some sort of circuit
to idle the motor.

Still trying to figure out the details. Would love to share info if you
move forward.

So, just what needs to be done to convert a vehicle with an Automatic
transmission?
Do you HAVE to idle the motor? (can a zilla do that?) Or is there some
other Not Impossibly Difficult way of dealing with it?
(Thinking of converting another truck - but pretty much all have Automatic
transmissions.)

Re: [EVDL] EVLN: Is An Electric Car A Better Value?

2014-06-04 Thread Barry Oppenheim via EV
Car dealers are in a class by themselves when it comes to bad customer
service. ...But Toyota has stood behind their product.

Tesla also stands out when it comes to customer service. From essentially
warranting the traction battery pack against any failure, picking up towing
costs if the car breaks down, offering free loaners and ranger service at
home, and diagnosing problems proactively and updating software remotely.
They get that it not only takes a great vechicle to make a great EV. It
takes a manufacturer with a culture of backing up their product.

One of the reasons they can do this is because they are not beholden to a
network of middlemen. Also, the fact that they have a very reliable EV
helps big time! And when issues have come up (12 volt battery failures,
retrofitting battery pack protection, upgrading and replacing charging
adapters) they have been quick to find and implement solutions at no costs.
