RE: protocol error

2002-03-26 Thread Irfan Malik

Thanks for the link but unfortunately this link only works when I get the NDR.

Smtp protocol error is only with one domain that is brain.net.pk all mails stuck in
the queue and when you take the properties of that below it shows you smtp protocol
error.

I used telnet on port 25 works well. This is an old issue I am facing. I discuss the
issue with the brain.net.pk guys and they told me that they were having this problem
but now it is solved.

I have another smpt server connected to the internet and am forwarding all
brain.net.pk mails from my exchange 2000 server to this smtp server, from there mails
of brain.net.pk going fine.

I don't know where the problem is, my exchange 2000 server is connected on leased
line(all mails going fine except brain.net.pk). While the backup smtp server connected
via dialup with other isp.

Any suggestion / hint will be appreciated.

Thanks

Alternative to exchange?

2002-03-26 Thread Mike Tonazzi

I know this is a exchange mailing list, but:

Very often I come across small companies (5 to 10 PC's) and they need
something like exchange. They are already using outlook and they need to
share calendar and email. Therefore I think exchange is overkill, they
would need somewhat a tiny exchange. Is there a solution for that? What
are you doing in these situations?

Thanks for any suggestion
Mike

Exchange Instant Messaging Sign-in Failure.

I then type it all it and still doesn't work.

RE: (Resolution) E2K: DLs not working

2002-03-26 Thread MS Exchange List

Hello,

In case some poor soul searching the archives has this problem:

SP2 for E2K has fixed this problem.

Brent

-Original Message-
From: MS Exchange List

Conversation: E2K: DLs not working
Subject: E2K: DLs not working

Hello,

Context:

-Server: Single Server, Member (not DC), E2K (native), SP1, post SP1
fixes : Q306882engi386.EXE WEB Client Fixes, Q303451engi386.EXE - Store
Patch

-Domain: Single (1) Domain (native), Win2K, SP2

Just completed E5.5 -> E2K in-place upgrade.  SP1 ADC used.

Emails sent to "old" Distribution Lists (E5.5s ADC migrated) seem to be
getting stuck in the "Messages awaiting directory lookup" Queue. I say
"seem to be" because it's the only queue you can't enumerate, but it
goes up by 1 every time I send a test message to an old Distribution
list. DLs (I should be saying "Group" instead of DL now for E2K) are
USG.

If I create a new Email enabled USG it works fine, message is delivered
to members.

If I trace one of the Emails sent to an old Group, it will end with the
following:

SMTP: Message Submitted to Categorizer

Turning up logging I get the following events after sending to an old
Group:

Source MSExchangeTransport
Category: Categorizer
Event ID: 6005
The categorizer is unable to initialize. The error code is '0xc004055e
: 0x0003'.

This followed by several:

Source MSExchangeTransport
Category: Categorizer
Event ID: 6005
The categorizer is unable to categorize messages due to a retryable
error.

What I've tried:

-"Force Connection" for the queue. It's "Connection State" is "Retry".

-I've moved the server from pointing to one GC to another one in our
domain. I removed GC from the previous DC server, synched, rebooted it.
And also rebooted the E2K server. And tried "Force Connection" again.

-SMTP Email is working fine in and out of the Server. Email to any of
the individuals on the list is fine. It's just the older lists. FYI:
Many of these older lists were used in E5.5 for Public Folders
restrictions, and the PFs came across just fine with no ACL errors. We
were in Native mode before installing the ADC.

Thank you,
Brent Allen

This is by design.

Install just the Exchange Management components on the workstations you want
this access on, or deploy custom MMC's with the appropriate snap-ins.

RE: in-place upgrade to W2K (NOT Exchange 2000)

2002-03-26 Thread MS Exchange List

Hello,

Last year I did this in production (NT4 -> W2K, MSX 5.5), and immediately afterwards
downgraded the box from a BDC to just a member server (DCPROMO).

One issue was POP Users were no longer able to authenticate. Reapplying latest MSX
service pack fixed things up. There was also a Q article on the exact problem.

FYI/FWIW: I'd recommend going with E2K SP2 if you do go for E2K later. It has fixed
a lot of little problems we had with E2K SP1.

belatedly let me comment that I've done this several times in a test

cannot get an Onstream tape device to perform properly under W2K.

You should test first. If you can, get the same hardware and versions of NT
4 & Exchange on a test box. Upgrade that box and see what happens.

Otherwise, make sure you have a current support contract for your hardware
vendor and a credit card handy so you can call Microsoft. Brushing up on
your resume couldn't hurt either.

Exchange should be OK in this case, but you never know. Every environment
is different. That's why testing is a better option.

You should probably ask this question on the NT/2000 discussion list.

We are running (and have performed the in-place upgrade) on Compaq hardware.
I recall we used a special 'primer' utility from them just before starting
the actual upgrade to remove the NT4 specific drivers/agents/software which
were incompatible with Windows 2000.

Tomorrow I am upgrading our mail servers from NT4/SP6a, Exchange
5.5(SP4) to Windows 2000 Server/SP2. Just an upgrade of the operating
system, not exchange 2000 or active directory. Has anyone experienced any
problems that I need to know of, prior to the upgrade? As far as I know, it
"should" be a seemless upgrade. Stick in the CD-rom and let it do it's
thing. I will have to upgrade our raid controllers firmware and nt driver
and also export/inport our verisign certificate to the new IIS. That is all
I can think of...thanks for any advice before this critical task.

RE: Host Unreachable

2002-03-26 Thread Scott Force

For archive purposes, it was a DNS issue. ISP had new DNS server info,
this did the trick. Thanks, Scott.

The customer agreed to have a another domain but I have another question:
Once I have a Native Mode Domain in the Forest, do I need to do anything
special or the ADC will know and automatically put the distribution lists
in the Native-Mode domain as Universal Security Group?

multiple copies of a message (mailing list )

2002-03-26 Thread wade robinson

I have a few customers that send newsletters to external DL's up to 600
users per DL recently the some of their external subscribers have received
multiple copies of newsletters sent up to two weeks ago. The messages
leave our Exchange 2000 server and the queues are all clean. I checked
the mailbox that is the source of this message and there is no indication
that it has sent the message multiple times. Only a few users on the DL
have complained about receiving multiple messages and they are spread
across several domains. Anyone seen this type of looping mail before??

Export of domains and users being blocked...

2002-03-26 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)

Ok...probably another stupid question, but I did check Systemtools.com first
Andy! :o)

Oh...BTW, just let me say...I HATE USING SWYNK'S ARCHIVES!! I can never
find a darned thing in there, even though I know I've seen it as little as a
month ago. Anyone care to teach me the finer points of the SWYNK search
engine?

Anyway...on to my question. Is there a tool available to export the list of
domains and users that you are blocking in Exchange 5.5? For example, I
want to go to Connections -> IMS -> Connections tab -> Message Filtering and
export out that list.

I've been getting them (several over the past week). I've also got a few
telling me my account has been restored to 'normal'.

I asked the same question on the swynk NT/2000 list - so far nobody else
has indicated they got them.

I've only got them from swynk. No other email related problems that I
can tell. I think their list server needs an enema.

Maybe they just don't like KS.

Have they set their authentication method to 'none' in the Microsoft
Exchange Server service properties (on the advanced tab)? If not, have them
do that.

RE: Authentication issues

2002-03-26 Thread Louanne Fournier

No offense taken. The reason is that most of them are developers and need to be able
to install and uninstall software. I could have them log on with other user accounts
and put those user accounts in the local administrators group but it was easier to use
administrator. Most of them are remote users so I don't have them logging into the
domain because they would be getting all kinds of errors while their machines tried to
connect to the domain. There are other reasons as well and yes it is screwed up and
caused me all kinds of nightmares but I don't always have the final say on how things
will be setup.

No offense , but your security structure seems completely upside down. You
give them admin access to their own machines, yet do not let their machines
be part of the domain? What an administrative nightmare.

This is kind of a strange one to be asking, I think I know what the problem
is but am looking for advice on the best workaround.

I am running E2k SP2 with clients using Outlook 2000. Each of my users has
a notebook running W2k Server and is in their own workgroup (not part of my
domain). We do this for a number of reasons but it is resulting in
authentication problems for my exchange users.

>From my reading I can see the the EMS is using my users logon credentials to
establish a RPC connection with the Exchange server. Because my users logon
as administrator to their machines it is using those credentials to send to
the server which are unrecognized. What happens to my users is that they get
prompted over and over for their user credentials and cannot open Outlook.
I have them browse to the Exchange Server through Explorer, double-click the
Exchange Server and authenticate using their network name and password.
Once they have done this there is no problem opening Outlook.

The funny thing is once they do this work-around authentication they don't
seem to get the logon credentials error anymore. It seems to be caching
that info somewhere, although it will occasionally re-appear again.

Does anyone have any ideas on an easier way around this? I had the same
setup in Exchange 5.5 and my users never had authentication problems.

I'm looking for a Server Log Consolidation program (preferrably free), that
will allow me to gather the Application, Security & System log files from
all my Exchange 5.5 servers into a central repository and filter them for
warning and error messages.

I've searched MSKB and Google, but nothing really jumps out at me.
Suggestions or links anyone?

All,

I have a user with a strange problem:

He receives a "The following mail can't be sent" return error message
resulting from an email that was sent from his mailbox.  No problem so far;
happens everyday.

My concern is that he did not initiate the original email that caused the
return error message. We searched Sent Files, Deleted Files, and
Permanently Deleted Files. No clues.

What could cause this?

I'm not paranoid, just curious.

Phantom email

2002-03-26 Thread Smith Joseph

All,

I have a user with a strange problem:

He receives a "The following mail can't be sent" return error message
resulting from an email that was sent from his mailbox.  No problem so far;
happens everyday.

My concern is that he did not initiate the original email that caused the
return error message. We searched Sent Files, Deleted Files, and
Permanently Deleted Files. No clues.

What could cause this?

I'm not paranoid, just curious.

RE: crazy error

2002-03-26 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)

Mike,

This fix for the problem below has always worked for me:

1. Close your Outlook, any open messages, and any PDA you may have syncing
with your Outlook.
2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to Programs, and then click
Windows Explorer.
3. In Windows Explorer move to the C:\Windows\Forms folder on your hard
drive.
4. Under the Forms folder, highlight everything ***EXCEPT THE CONFIGS
FOLDER*** and press the DELETE key. When prompted, "Are you sure you want to
remove the folder"" and send all its contents to the Recycle
Bin?", click Yes.
5. Restart Outlook and move your e-mails.

Where I see this most commonly is when you restart any AV software (NAV,
Groupshield, take your pick). the AV locks the Attachment table so as to
scan it and once it is completed then you can move your messages again. If
this is likely just wait for the AV software to do it's job.

If this is not the case, then . . . select the emails you want to move, open
them, let your AV software scan them, and then you should be able to move
them just fine.

RE: Your membership on exchange has been put on hold

2002-03-26 Thread Schwartz, Jim

I get the ones about holding my...
Never mind.

I used to get them for a while and found that some emails were not getting
to us in a timely manner and then I would get the nasty gram. Look into your
inbound mail and check connections. Do some testing to see if you can
connect via SMTP regularly. I ran Servers Alive against it for a week and
went hunting when the failure rate was around 90%. Found the problem was
McAfee (go figure).

RE: Your membership on exchange has been put on hold

2002-03-26 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

I've been getting them (several over the past week). I've also got a few
telling me my account has been restored to 'normal'.

I asked the same question on the swynk NT/2000 list - so far nobody else
has indicated they got them.

I've only got them from swynk. No other email related problems that I
can tell. I think their list server needs an enema.

Maybe they just don't like KS.

Subject: Working Offline From Exchange Server

Dear All,

I have half a dozen or so laptop users, who mainly use their laptops in
their respective offices, but sometimes from home.

I have configured offline folders for them, and told them to perform a Send
and Receive when connected to their office LAN's to make sure their offline
copy is kept as up to date as to be useful.

I have had a phone call today from someone working remotely whos been
working offline, has sent an email (which has placed itself in the Outbox on
the offline info store). Now he wants to send that email. He connects to his
ISP, then to our VPN, and opens Outlook. However, it opens the offline
store, even though he can see our network, and the server Exchange is
installed on.

I thought this config would have opened the IS on the server, and then he
could Send and Receive to synchronize, and send that mail, however, with it
opening in offline mode, all he gets is an error about the server being
unavailable.

I have managed to connect him to the IS on the server by logging off, then
loggin back on and selecting use DUN to connect, when he opens Outlook then,
he gets the IS on the server, and can S & R

Is this working the way it should? Or is there anyway to open the IS on the
server by having him connect from an "offline from the domain login" without
having to actually log on to the domain thru DUN?

Thanks in advance

RE: Authentication issues

No offense , but your security structure seems completely upside down. You
give them admin access to their own machines, yet do not let their machines
be part of the domain? What an administrative nightmare.

Subject: Authentication issues

I've searched MSKB and Google, but nothing really jumps out at me.

Backing up distribution lists

2002-03-26 Thread ExAdmin

We have about 500 distribution lists in our site. All of them have the
"Expansion Server" set to "Any server in a site". I noticed that when I do a
restore of the database to one of our test servers (disaster recovery
testing), I do not see any of the distribution lists. What would be the best
way to backup distribution lists with this kind of a setup in our production
environment? I know I can do an export of the lists and its members to a CSV
file, but is there a way to extract the distr. Lists' information from a
full backup of the database?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Authentication issues

2002-03-26 Thread Louanne Fournier

This is kind of a strange one to be asking, I think I know what the problem is but am
looking for advice on the best workaround.

I am running E2k SP2 with clients using Outlook 2000. Each of my users has a notebook
running W2k Server and is in their own workgroup (not part of my domain). We do this
for a number of reasons but it is resulting in authentication problems for my exchange
users.

>From my reading I can see the the EMS is using my users logon credentials to
>establish a RPC connection with the Exchange server. Because my users logon as
>administrator to their machines it is using those credentials to send to the server
>which are unrecognized. What happens to my users is that they get prompted over and
>over for their user credentials and cannot open Outlook. I have them browse to the
>Exchange Server through Explorer, double-click the Exchange Server and authenticate
>using their network name and password. Once they have done this there is no problem
>opening Outlook.

The funny thing is once they do this work-around authentication they don't seem to get
the logon credentials error anymore. It seems to be caching that info somewhere,
although it will occasionally re-appear again.

Does anyone have any ideas on an easier way around this? I had the same setup in
Exchange 5.5 and my users never had authentication problems.

RE: Prep

2002-03-26 Thread William Lefkovics

Yes. Anytime.

If those permissions get whacked, rerunning domainprep can repair them.

Heck, you can run it for fun. In fact I'm running it right now! You can
schedule it to run while away. You can run it from the GUI. You can run it
from the command line.

You can run it from your house.
You can run it with your mouse.

RE: crazy error

2002-03-26 Thread Couch, Nate

Where I see this most commonly is when you restart any AV software (NAV,
Groupshield, take your pick). the AV locks the Attachment table so as to
scan it and once it is completed then you can move your messages again. If
this is likely just wait for the AV software to do it's job.

If this is not the case, then . . . select the emails you want to move, open
them, let your AV software scan them, and then you should be able to move
them just fine.

While the Ed Crowley Server Move method is very effective, I would not
discount the backup and restore method, where you do the whole move within
one day. I've used the Ed Crawley Server Move method and it works fine, but
the downside is that it can take months to move the mailboxes, if you have a
lot of them, and if they are big. As a result, recently I used the server
move method, and had great success, it was finished in one day and was much
cleaner. I wouldn't say it's that risky, as long as you know how to back
out of it. There are also two types of move, i) using one-line backup &
restore, ii) using off-line backup & restore, and I found the latter easier.

Subject: crazy error

We've just started getting this error recently with our Exchange 5.5 sp4
servers; it seems whenever a user tries to move multiple or single e-mails
to an .pst file (personal folder) onto a local hard drive, they get the
following error:

"Can't move the items. Some items could not be moved. They were either
already moved or deleted, or access was denied"

You can see that some of the files actually moved over to the pst, you can
also select the same files again and some more will move over then fail
again with the same error message. This has the same results with Outlook
98/98/2000, I haven't tested yet with XP. It seems this is a server issue
not client.

Thanks,

Mike Wojcinski

If you've already run the performance optimizer you might want to ask you AV

RE: Host Unreachable

2002-03-26 Thread Ben Schorr

We had a similar problem last week - we could receive mail from anybody and
send mail to most domains, but there were a number of domains we couldn't.
Our problem turned out to be a black hole router at an upstream provider.

You might check this article for a good lead:

Have you checked to make sure this user has Logon Locally privileges to the
machine running OWA? Sounds like a security issue on these few users.

Subject: Vauge OWA Error

When trying to access a mailbox via OWA (Exch 5.5 sp4) with a user's
account, I get the following error: "OWA was unable to get to your inbox".
However, if I use the Username/PW of the Administrator, I can open the
mailbox fine. This problem seems isolated to only a couple of users and
I've deleted their accounts and re-created them with no change. I gather
that this is a default message, however I can't seem to find any other
problems in the IIS logs or Event Viewer. I'm quite frustrated at this
point and any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

RE: Moving Exchange 5.5 to new hardware

2002-03-26 Thread Rowell, John (AFIT)

Working Offline From Exchange Server

2002-03-26 Thread Niki Blowfield

What is the correct IM server configuration in my situation???

2002-03-26 Thread test

I have a W2K (SP2) dual home machine as a single server on a small LAN. This
machine is also an Xchg2k (SP2) + Web server with one static public IP and
one assigned, registered domain name (e.g. domain.com). Since I have to
provide I-net access to users, I'm using ISA server for web sharing and
caching.

I'm trying to configure an externally accessible IM server but have several
questions on which I was unable to find answers anywhere.

1. Since it is supposed to be a routed environment, ISA make me change the
Default web site (DWS) port from 80 to 81 etc. MS TechNet says that IM works
only with port 80. ??
2. It, also, says that a dedicated web site (s) may be created for use with
IM server (s). How this can be done and how can I create several IM virtual
severs, if, again, IM use only port 80 and every other Web server would
require a different port? When creating an IM virtual server (in the
Exchange System Manager), I have to change, temporarily, the port value from
81 back to 80, in the IIS' DWS. Otherwise I'm getting a message that there
is "no web site available".
3. TechNet says that when creating an IM virtual server, a FQDN should be
entered as the DNS name. IM virtual server wizard finds a host name only,
while I understand that a FQDN is supposed to look like:
"host.NetBIOSdom.domain.com." The exchange.org, also, suggests to use
"im.domain.com" and to create a DNS record for it. Where is the issue?
4. Some sources say that "im.domain.com" has to be created for IM routers
only. Should I create it in the environment I have? If, yes. has it to be
registered with ISP's NSs or not?
5. DNS. Should I assign, on my internal DNS, an external or internal IP for
the IM "A" record? Should I change port # for the _rvp service location
record, since the DWS port is changed to 81? Should I create
"ïm.domain.com" zone or not, in my environment? etc, etc.

I would appreciate your advice on the most suitable configuration. Thanks.
