Because here my quest is not to make logs available to webtrends, I know
webtrends can get the logs from any where. My main objective is to store the
iis logs on a different server than the web server because we are hurting for
disk space. So I was saying if I cannot figure out a way to make iis log
directly to the logfile server I will just let iis write to the local server
and then move the logs to the logfile server nightly using a batch file and
then would point webtrends to the logfile server. thanks

DUDE - I did read the whole thread. What it appears you are trying to
accomplish is getting IIS to log everything to a mapped drive or UNC path -
if your web sites are so high traffic as you claim, you wouldn't want to
incur the network overhead of doing that. So then YOU SAID, and I quote "I
am thinking of just writing them to the local disk and then copy them to the
logfile server every night with a batch file before the webtrends prog runs
to analyse the logs." I just pointed out that you don't need to write a
batch file - which if you knew you didn't need to write a batch file, why did
you say you would write a batch file.

Yes, I have ideas.

Webtrends can simply retrieve the log files, you don't need to write a batch
file.

You might also want to move this discussion over to
http://www.15seconds.com/listserv.htm, an IIS5 list where it is more on
topic. Also, if this is a public website, I would not have them as member

Why can't you log to an ODBC datasource. This is not as performant as
logging to a file.

IIS runs under the local system account. The documentation you are reading
must be incorrect.

A note on IIS Logging. This is a high performance asynchronous process. So
entries are flushed to disk when processor cycles permit. ODBC logging will
degrade performance on your server as it is more of a synchronous process and
as such prone to locking.

I suggest you write to disk and then use a perl script to merge the log
files.

RE: This is a screwed up

2002-06-05 Thread Chris Scharff

I'm not sure how that could get someone in trouble. I mean, isn't that why
companies hire supposedly compotent e-mail administrators? It's not like a
website is required to spoof mail, hell an e-mail client isn't really
necessary.

The only thing I find screwed up is someone else is charging $ to do what
even my SSM can do for free. Course my SSMs are required to read and
demonstrate an understanding of the relavent RFCs their first week on the
job, seeing as how they are e-mail administrators and all.

If the message comes from the information store, it stays there..there is no
intermediate queue on disk, everything is done with pointers in memory
between the store and IIS. The only things you'd see in the vsi 1\queue

has Full Admin rights to the Org and AG is me. No one else. But all of
a sudden these guys are running this Delegation Wizard and placing
themselves inside the Org and AG. With no prior account in there to do
this with. Now I have 2 extra accounts w/Full Admin rights in the Org

Delegation Wizard. Does that clear things up?

Fred Bloggs has not delegated rights within the exchange organisation

He is a member of what security groups?
Do these groups have any delegated rights in the exchange organisation?

RE: MBR Recovery?

2002-06-05 Thread Ken Cornetet

Boot from MSDOS floppy and do "fdisk /mbr". That will re-write the master
boot record. However, I don't think that is your problem. The problem is
that the partition boot block (which is loaded by the MBR) can't find
ntloader.

If your system disk (which is the disk you boot from - as opposed to your
boot disk, which is where your operating system resides - sheesh!) is FAT,
this means that ntloader is gone or corrupt.

If your system disk is NTFS, this may mean that ntloader has "moved". Since
the boot block code can't read an NTFS file system, it depends on a
parameter table that contains the apparent cylinder/head/sector of where
ntloader resides. The NT installer pokes the C/H/S address into the
parameter table when NT installs.

A common cause of this is trying to boot off of an NT mirror of the C: disk
where the mirror does not have the exact same apparent geometry as the
original.

The NT4 resource kit goes into great detail about this.

Whip out the NT setup CDROM and go through the repair process. If the server
is important, pay Microsoft support to walk you through the process.

Alternatively, try re-installing NT to an alternate location (say C:\WINNT2)
and see if it fixes up ntloader.

If it is offensive and you don't want users reading the item then ExMerge
will work. From Q260037:
If the original message was forwarded with a different subject, the ExMerge
utility cannot delete the message based on the original message subject line
or MTS-ID.

If the Item Retention option is turned on, the message may be available for
recovery on the Outlook client.

If the message is very sensitive and needs to be totally eradicated... It's
a mailbox, by mailbox deletion.

RE: Messaging & collaboration (Unified Messaging)

2002-06-05 Thread Dupler, Craig

Partial data dump. Maybe more will come later, but there is a lot of stuff
in the archives.
1. Messaging & Collaboration
Both are poorly defined. There are really at least three distinctly
different things that people mean when they use the term "messaging," and
probably many more.

One kind of messaging is about RFC 822 and friends. It is simple body part 3
e-mail, with a possibility of attachments. It includes the X.400 and
proprietary systems too, but the RFC's define the core of reality.
A second kind deals with low level application components talking to each
other, usually through a brokerage service such as CORBA or COM. It gets
confused with RFC 822 messaging because there is such a thing as "message
enabled applications." Actually there are two kinds. One uses high level
applications like spreadsheets and databases talking to each other via
e-mail. The other happens at the level of C libraries. Unfortunately, both
use the exact same name ("message enabled applications") so much of the
literature about this topic is confused gibberish and tripe (that's being
kind).
The third kind of messaging is a generic reference to the realm of tools
that come with Exchange and Notes, and includes all of that stuff that we
expect a "messaging system" to take care of. Which gets us into
"collaboration."

Collaboration is seamless communication that permits mixing voice, video,
and data at will, as needed, in real-time or on a store and forward basis,
all supported by appropriate notification and alert services, and most
importantly end user policy enforcement point (PEP) tools (think "rules
engines").

2. Unified Messaging
Oh sys admin, where art thou? There is a line in the film where Junior
tells Pappy that "we gotta get some of that reform." Unified Messaging is
sort of like that. One of the positive attributes of X.400 (1988 or later)
was that it did a very good job of generalizing the e-mail kind of messaging
services. The RFC's have copied that poorly, but the basic idea is that
there is no real difference between e-mail, voice-mail, fax, video mail, or
higher level message enabled applications messages. They are all simply
specific cases of the same thing. Unified messaging means treating them as
such. So, a message store should not care what the message types are that
it contains, except of course that it should be able to identify the message
types by attribute. It is absolutely ludicrous to talk about unified
messaging and non-integrated or separate message stores. And yet, when it
became popular to talk about unified messaging a few years ago, all of the
vendors of the legacy systems said "we gotta get some of that unified
messaging." In fact, with perfectly straight faces, all of these turkeys
began claiming that their legacy products already had it. It really was
that silly, and almost exactly as portrayed in the movie.

But even more pathetic, was that most of the customer community bought all
of that nonsense, and people actually began calling all sorts of non-unified
systems "unified." It was sickening. It still is. Using one client to
view multiple non-integrated message stores is not unified messaging, even
if you can name three vendors that say it is. But I concede, you can never
underestimate the gullibility of an IS techie.

1. Why it is happening (who it is for)? Let's face it, no one would start
from scratch and invent DTMF, ISDN, the IEEE 802.3 family, voice mail,
e-mail, FAX and FAX data as a family of solutions for equipping the
Enterprise. The Klingons would win every time. In many ways it is about
cleaning up the past 130 years of electronic communications systems and
getting to something that makes sense in the current era.

2. Who is making it happening (vendors)? No. You are. All technology
expands and reaches critical mass based on demand. Ask anyone who lost
money in the .COM bust. At the end of the day, sales drive everything.

3. How is it happening (solutions)? One desktop or mobile user at a time.

More later.

RE: Outlook appointments on Exchange

Jon,

Space management and server growth is something that I'm very interested in,
as it has a very real effect on my day to day management strategies. I'm
vaguely familiar with Roger and the work he's done (something to do with
"mergers and acquisitions" for Peregrine, I believe) and I was wondering if
you could clarify your experience in the Exchange community so that we can

That's quite a leap, to say that offline maintenance is causing 2 or 3
mailboxes out of 1200 to be unable to respond to specific meeting requests,
even though it's been running for years without a single problem. Might
want to reconsider your logic on that one -- there's not a shred of evidence
that suggests it's a "direct result." :)

The main reason we do offline defragging every 6 months is because our store
size is NOT constant, not by a long stretch. Our organization has specific
needs and usage trends that cause a great deal of unallocated space to pile
up from time to time. Historically we've been unable to extend the physical
space on the servers due to financial restraints, so we've been forced to
make do with the limited space by compacting the database from time to time.
Thankfully, this paradigm is changing around here so hopefully we can get
some new space and forget about it altogether. I was really more interested
in hearing the other arguments just to satisfy my own curiosity. Thanks for
everyone's response!

The reasons why I don't do it are:

1. It's unnecessary.
2. I have a life.
3. Unnecessary downtime is frowned upon in a 24x7 shop.
4. I don't need to justify my existence by doing useless administrative
work.

It's like disassembling your car's axles and clean your shocks every weekend

do so. But, why bother?

should *not* be performed ... I've heard/read quite a few people cringing

You lost me for a second there Craig. We were talking about a message not
the entire mailbox, but the same principle applies to a "deleted" message
correct?

A mailbox is not a container, but rather a view of a subset of the objects
within a container having some common attribute (i.e. belong to a specific
mailbox). Deleting a mailbox is NOT the same thing as deleting a container
and its contents. Deleting a mailbox merely deletes a view and nulls out
the appropriate attributes. Deleting a mailbox does not cause a message
object to be expunged, at least not directly.

Think of it like this. If a TV show is only available on cable channel 89
and you eliminate 100% of the subscribers that had the ability to view
channel 89, that does not destroy the source. It might lead to a garbage
collection exercise that will cause a purge to occur, but deleting the views
is not deleting the data.

RE: MEC 2002

2002-06-05 Thread Slinger, Gary

It's just a thought, but did it occur to you to actually look at the fscking
MEC website? And perchance at where the hotels are in relation to the
conference center? Or even the part of the clearly totally irrelevant page
where it STATES that shuttles will be available from some of the hotels just
like EVERY OTHER FREAKIN' MEC CONFERENCE

Or was that too difficult? Or is your time somehow more valuable than ours?

RE: Delegation Wizard

2002-06-05 Thread Bowles, John L.

Basically what is going on is this. We have 2 admins on the West Coast
that have an exchange server out there. But since I manage the server
here on the east coast it's in our Admin Group. Ok the only one that
has Full Admin rights to the Org and AG is me. No one else. But all of
a sudden these guys are running this Delegation Wizard and placing
themselves inside the Org and AG. With no prior account in there to do
this with. Now I have 2 extra accounts w/Full Admin rights in the Org
and AG. I asked them how they did that and they said they just ran the
Delegation Wizard. Does that clear things up?

John, to understand you correctly lets use some examples.
Fred Bloggs has not delegated rights within the exchange organisation
whatsoever Then Fred just runs the Exchange system manager program and
adds himself as an Exchange Full administrator at the organisation
level. Please confirm this is what is happening.

He is a member of what security groups?
Do these groups have any delegated rights in the exchange organisation?

I had a problem similar to this. Use something like ASDI and look at the
users Target Address attribute. It might have something in it. Not sure
how it gets there, but that is what happened to me. Just a thought.

This is from www.Eventid.net

We have seen this message when an Exchange custom recipient is deleted and
someone tries to send an email to that account BEFORE the global address
list is recreated. However there are other potential reasons for this
message to occur. See the articles below for more info.

Yeah...the mail is flowing fine between sites. You can't really ask Optus
anymore...you have to buy a support incident from their tech support
provider. It seemed like it was something I did and not them due to the
weird routing message.

Is the mail flowing between the two sites OK. What did Optus say?

We use Optus's Facsys 2000 Fax/Exchange 2000 connector with Exchange 2000.
We had previously used the same company's fax connector with Exchange 5.5
with great success. After we upgraded to Exchange 2000, we installed the new
Facsys software and sent some test e-mails to fax numbers and it worked
fine.

Later, we has installed the site connector with another site (I think that's
not what its called now but that's my terminology - sorry) and now any
messages that get sent to a fax number give an error message like the
following:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSExchangeMTA
Event Category: X.400 Service
Event ID: 290
Date: 06/05/2002
Time: 10:28:44 AM
User: N/A
Computer: DOG
Description:
A non-delivery report (reason code unable-to-transfer and diagnostic code
unrecognised-OR-name) is being generated for message C=US;A=
;P=Reagan;L=DOG-020605142840Z-115. It was originally destined for C=US;A=
;P=Reagan;O=Truck;DDA:FAX=Arch Willingham(a)+1 (800) 555-1212; (recipient
number 1), and was to be redirected to . [MTA DISP:RESULT 17 136] (12)

Also, it sends me an NDR that says:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

Arch Willingham (Business Fax) on 06/05/2002 10:29 AM
The e-mail address could not be found. Perhaps the recipient
moved to a different e-mail organization, or there was a mistake in the
address. Check the address and try again. The MTS-ID of the original message
is:c=US;a= ;p=Parks;l=DOG-020605142840Z-115
MSEXCH:MSExchangeMTA:AREA1:DOG

The weird part is that it looks like it is trying to send it to the other
site (Truck) instead of going on out the fax server. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Arch Willingham

RE: A mistake was made...

2002-06-05 Thread Schwartz, Jim

If it is offensive and you don't want users reading the item then ExMerge
will work. From Q260037:
If the original message was forwarded with a different subject, the ExMerge
utility cannot delete the message based on the original message subject line
or MTS-ID.

If the Item Retention option is turned on, the message may be available for
recovery on the Outlook client.

If the message is very sensitive and needs to be totally eradicated... It's
a mailbox, by mailbox deletion.

Do they need to view that folder?
If not - make it visible in the address book but limit default access to
that of contributor only.
This way they can send messages to it but cannot drop into it.

Or

Have your HR make "accidental" dropping of stuff into public folders a
"termination" offense. 5 folks later - no accidents.

oddly enough users are 'accidentally' dropping stuff in a specific pf
and then freaking out when they realize that the entire firm has seen
something they shouldn't have. The management figures if we restrict the
drag/drop, then there will be no accidents.

I think you are missing the question I'm asking. They are adding
themselves without already having an account in org or admin group. See
what I'm saying? They are basically adding anything at any time.
Usually you would have to have an account already present. But there

now there is "an internal user" to "send email to a single internal

I see how to stop the receipt of messages unless from specifics, but not
how to restrict outbound.

RE: Outlook appointments on Exchange

2002-06-05 Thread Ed Crowley

That explains why you'd do a periodic eseutil /d, and it's not a bad
reason. However, it doesn't explain why you'd do the rest of the stuff
you described. You should do the other stuff on a database you restore
to your recovery server.

That's quite a leap, to say that offline maintenance is causing 2 or 3
mailboxes out of 1200 to be unable to respond to specific meeting
requests, even though it's been running for years without a single
problem. Might want to reconsider your logic on that one -- there's not
a shred of evidence that suggests it's a "direct result." :)

The main reason we do offline defragging every 6 months is because our
store size is NOT constant, not by a long stretch. Our organization has
specific needs and usage trends that cause a great deal of unallocated
space to pile up from time to time. Historically we've been unable to
extend the physical space on the servers due to financial restraints, so
we've been forced to make do with the limited space by compacting the
database from time to time. Thankfully, this paradigm is changing around
here so hopefully we can get some new space and forget about it
altogether. I was really more interested in hearing the other arguments
just to satisfy my own curiosity. Thanks for everyone's response!

I'm interested in hearing some sound arguments on why offline
maintenance should *not* be performed ... I've heard/read quite a few
people cringing about it, but can never back it up. I've been doing it
for years without a hitch; I think as long as the proper precautions are
taken and proper trending and planning is performed instead of just
defragging willy-nilly, it's a pretty safe thing to do. I'm interested
in hearing the other side, though ... anyone? Jon

RE: Public Folder - drag/drop

Do they need to view that folder?
If not - make it visible in the address book but limit default access to
that of contributor only.
This way they can send messages to it but cannot drop into it.

Or

Have your HR make "accidental" dropping of stuff into public folders a
"termination" offense. 5 folks later - no accidents.

oddly enough users are 'accidentally' dropping stuff in a specific pf

Bzzz. Nope. It appears, as does the Recall message as a separate message.

If the recipient opens the Recall message first, it deletes the original.
Its one of the many reasons I read the original first, before deleting the

If it's that sensitive, shut down your exchange servers and run ISSCAN.
Reprimand the user. Cut off his index finger or something.

User sent out an eMAIL to a large distribution list by mistake. The Recall

sensitive eMAIL that went out and needs to be trapped before too many people
read it. What can I do?

Thanks in advance.

first there was a "restricting outbound email from a user"
now there is "an internal user" to "send email to a single internal

Make up your mind and re-state the question please.

How do I go about restricting outbound email from a user to only particular

I see how to stop the receipt of messages unless from specifics, but not how

This was very sensitive eMAIL that went out and needs to be trapped before
too many people read it. What can I do?

Thanks in advance.

Title: RE: Adding some HTML to all outbound messages?

If you must do it I know that the 4.3 Version of MailSweeper for SMTP will allow you to do this.

Although I for one would talk him out of it.  Bandwidth issues alone could probably do it.  Go for the link at the bottom of the message, easier, cheaper, and "bandwidth friendly"

Exchange 5.5 SP4

Out CEO wants us to add some HTML to the top of all outbound messages. It is
a graphic with a hotlink to our website. 10K total size.

Can I configure this from the server?

Thanks!

RE: Outlook appointments on Exchange

2002-06-05 Thread Jon Butler

Delegation Wizard

2002-06-05 Thread Bowles, John L.

All,

Is there anyway to remove the Delegation wizard that comes along with
the install of Exchange 2000? Currently we have admins that think that
it's fun to add themselves as Full Admins on our site. Can I take care
of this somehow? And what privileges do you need to add yourself? I
can't think of it off the top of my head.

TIA,

SMTP Queues

2002-06-05 Thread Davis,Scott

In Exchange 5.5, when a SMTP message bound for a remote host gets queued
because the remote host is temporally down, the message would sit in the
IMC outbound queue as a file on disk usually in the exchsrvr\imcdata\out
directory.
This does not seem to be the case for Exchange 2000. Does anyone know
where SMTP queued outbound messages stored?

RE: Outlook appointments on Exchange

2002-06-05 Thread Roger Seielstad

Seeing as the problem you're experiencing is most likely the direct result
of one of your offline database management practices, you might want to
change your thinking on it.

The only time I've ever seen a good reason to do them is following a large
scale change on a server - like migrating 30GB of user data off it.

Exchange does a phenominal job of self-managing the database. Better than
you can do, with few exceptions.

Take the compacting process - you do it every 6 months (IIRC). Why? I'd bet
that the store hits a relatively constant size at the end of that 6 month
period, and all things considered, the amount of white space stays
relatively consistent. So, in a nutshell, you're doing something that has no
upside, yet has the very real possibility of causing damage.

RE: Public Folder - drag/drop

So you want them to be able to create new items in that folder but not be
able to create new items in it. I can see the challenge.

The only thing I can think of is to use a custom post form for that pf,
publish it in that pf and then restrict the pf to accept only that specific
form.

RE: Email Restriction Ex5.5 sp4

2002-06-05 Thread Ward, Stuart

I don't believe that achieves what I am after. I want to set up an internal
user to only be able to send email to a single internal distribution list.

Can't seem to get into the archives right now...

How do I go about restricting outbound email from a user to only particular
internal recipients?

I see how to stop the receipt of messages unless from specifics, but not how
to restrict outbound.

Thanks

RE: Outlook appointments on Exchange

2002-06-05 Thread Soysal, Serdar

The reasons why I don't do it are:

1. It's unnecessary.
2. I have a life.
3. Unnecessary downtime is frowned upon in a 24x7 shop.
4. I don't need to justify my existence by doing useless administrative
work.

It's like disassembling your car's axles and clean your shocks every weekend
as "scheduled maintenance". As long as you are careful, it's pretty safe to
do so. But, why bother?

I'm interested in hearing some sound arguments on why offline maintenance
should *not* be performed ... I've heard/read quite a few people cringing
about it, but can never back it up. I've been doing it for years without a
hitch; I think as long as the proper precautions are taken and proper
trending and planning is performed instead of just defragging willy-nilly,
it's a pretty safe thing to do. I'm interested in hearing the other side,
though ... anyone? Jon

RE: stupid disclaimers

2002-06-05 Thread Chris Scharff

It performs a function... It states I'll be breaking the law if I act on
messages you send to the list. In fact I'm apparently breaking the law now
by clarifying why I'll no longer be acting on messages you send to the list.

So, sorry you'll no longer be the direct beneficiary of any my witty
discourse unless your lawyers want to send me a singed and notarized waiver
from said disclaimer and pay the fees of my lawyer to have said waiver
reviewed.

Not a big loss I'm sure, but given the litigious society we live in, how
could I do anything less?

RE: stupid disclaimers

Does printing the message out and pissing on the paper constitute "action"?

Re: Outlook appointments on Exchange

2002-06-05 Thread missy koslosky

The real question, to my mind, is "why bother". There is no need to run
these utilities, and hasn't been since the introduction of online
maintenance, which gathers all of the white space in the database and
essentially moves that white space into the back of the database where
it can be overwritten.

I'm interested in hearing some sound arguments on why offline
maintenance
should *not* be performed ... I've heard/read quite a few people
cringing
about it, but can never back it up. I've been doing it for years
without a
hitch; I think as long as the proper precautions are taken and proper
trending and planning is performed instead of just defragging
willy-nilly,
it's a pretty safe thing to do. I'm interested in hearing the other
side,
though ... anyone?

soccer.hmmm. is that the game where after 30 minutes only the
Goalies and Commentators have any energy left?
No wonder fans get so frustrated.

Actually, it's 'extra time', and football.

I love soccer. Especially when it's 0-0 in double overtime
