New Server
Hi All Just a quick question, we currently have Exchange 5.5 on a dinosaur of a server. We have just started to use scripts and its forever hanging. We want to upgrade to Exchange 2000 and a new server. What spec server would you get for stableness and resilience i.e. processing power, HD space, Memory, Raid etc if you need it for- 100 Users in which are all heavily dependant on email as we are becoming more of an internet and email company Quite a few mail shots to all our clients per week Running a few scripts daily Cheers for input and advice Vas _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchangetext_mode=lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: mail relay
The way some of the Digital Viruii of the New Frontier work, This will happen. Lets say you and XYZ corp communicate via Email, and you are in his addressbook. They are hit with one of the digital predators(Virus). for every email that virus sends, it will pull two names out of the infected one's address book. one address is the sender, and the other is the reciepient. This is the very reason the hey you idiot you sent me a virus messages don't work. Now if we could only get those automated messages turned off. We to have been fighting this with SOBIG, I spent over 8 hours trying to convince a user who only has is a custom recipient on our system that his e-mail account here was not infected with a virus. Very very odd. Before today we could have relay test sites check our mail server and they would always come back as not an open relay. So today I get a developer that wont do authentication and needs me to relay his stuff. I tell him no and show him how its bad, then we remove the routing restrictions temporarily to show it to him working... then I immediatly turn authentication back on... but wait. Its on but its still relaying! has anyone ever seen this? We cant get it to stick so we are going to format the server and reload everything from backup. Seriously, a Compaq ProLiant with 1GB RAM and dual 1+ GHz CPUs would probably do fine (can you get anything less nowadays?). The size of the hard drives? - well, estimate how much disk space your users will need and calculate accordingly, sorry I can't predict that for you. ***I have seen places that do Exchange on two RAID1 volumes or even one RAID1 (or RAID5) volume, some don't even do RAID at all. RE: The New MS Word / VBA vulnerability in Attachments
We instituted the same policy yesterday. We started diverting all office format documents as well as .txt files (we had seven instances of [EMAIL PROTECTED] make it all the way to the mail server, where the AV picked it, because the attachment was disguised as a .txt file.) for testing. We told the users it may delay the delivery of an e-mail up to an hour...no complaints, and we have the backing of the computer security person, the CIO and the president of the company. -Original Message- From: Michael Henry [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2003 1:54 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: The New MS Word / VBA vulnerability in Attachments After reading the announcement concerning the vulnerability in MS Word / VBA, began to think proactively about the impact. And now I am getting negative feedback because of the impact it's having. No 'real' complaints about delayed delivery. The social engineering is practically perfect on this. 0 items, 7 unread
My turn to ask stupid questions :) I have a user who is reporting that when she looks at this particular public folder, the folder is empty but the status bar shows 0 items, 7 unread (also she has a shortcut to that folder and there is a fat (7) next to it). I remotely accessed her PC and ran Outlook /cleanviews but that did not help. What else could I try? Exchange Cluster Domain Migration
We are currently running Exchange 5.5 SP4 clustered on an NT4 Domain. Is it possible to move the servers to a 2000 domain without breaking Exchange? I'm having a problem using SRS to replicate the data between the E5.5 and E2K server. It works flawlessly in our testbed, but when I try to install E2K in production, it doesn't prompt me to join the existing org/site (NT4 domain). The only difference in production is that both servers are in different domains. Any advice is very much appreciated. Hi, So, the virus taking advantage of this MS Word/VB vulnerability is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also, are you simply blocking *.txt extensions in your Exchange AV or some other file formats? I started filtering .doc and checking them myself before forwarding them on. And sent out a notice to that affect. I do about 20 or so of these daily. Well, I was reluctantly supported by my manager. And now I am getting negative feedback because of the impact it's having. No 'real' complaints about delayed delivery. The social engineering is practically perfect on this. The virus on first pass, simply looks up every e-mail with a .doc. Infects it and re-sends it with UPDATED added to the subject line. Then e-mails others with I forgot to send this. So the sender is known by the recipient on this one. Please let me ask you, especially if the VBA is polymorphic/self modifying, what are the chances, that if it got through the AV on your server, that your user would open this e-mail? As time goes by, the caliber and sophistication of viruses are getting better and not worst. Now, I hope that the payload does not turn bad on this one. Like the virus detects that it has sent to everyone that it could, then starts deleting files. Until the first virus hits and it's variants, Am I being cautious? Therefore, should keep the filter on. Or Am I over reacting? An need to turn off the filter. Your opinion is requested. RE: The New MS Word / VBA vulnerability in Attachments
Erik, Actually, that's not what I said. Technically, I do see that I added some unrelated information that could confuse you. Let me attempt to clarify. These four security bulletins came out this month, detailing vulnerabilities in the MS Office Suite: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-038.asp MS03-038 : Unchecked buffer in Microsoft Access Snapshot Viewer Could Allow Code Execution (827104) http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-037.asp MS03-037 : Flaw in Visual Basic for Applications Could Allow Arbitrary Code execution (822715) http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-036.asp MS03-036 : Buffer Overrun in WordPerfect Converter Could Allow Code Execution (827103) http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-035.asp MS03-035 : Flaw in Microsoft Word Could Enable Macros to Run Automatically (827653) We have been blocking almost the entire Martin Blackstone Danger List of attachment types for quite a while. But, because of the four vulnerabilities listed above, we are taking the additional measure of diverting all MS Office document types and testing them, prior to delivery to the end user until such time as we get all our servers and workstations patched. Thankfully, we have an excellent SMS system setup that is doing this for us on an automated basis. Since all this was already going on and on a completely unrelated note, I added the .txt extension type to our external block list, as it is one additional attack vector that the [EMAIL PROTECTED] virus uses to propogate. Since our users were already being slightly inconvenienced and we have the support of everyone involved, why not make sure we were completely covered? The fix provided by the patch below supersedes the one included in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-026 and includes the fix for the security vulnerability discussed in MS03-026, as well as 3 newly discovered vulnerabilities (came out yesterday). http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-039.asp MS03-039 : Buffer Overrun In RPCSS Service Could Allow Code Execution (824146) -Original Message- From: Erik L. Two recipients with the same address error?
Ladies and gentlemen, I've developed a somewhat odd quirk and am hoping that someone can help me sort it out... First the basics: Exchange 2000 SP3 on Windows 2000 SP3... I have a user, Daniel Julien, who originally existed in our parent domain... Due to some changes in the organization, we've had to move some of the users from the parent domain to a child domain... For the few users that needed to move, I've simply detached their Exchange mailboxes, deleted the parent domain accounts, created new accounts in the child domain (SID history and all that wasn't important) and then reattached the mailbox to the account in the child domain... This of course went smoothly for the other six accounts, but (of course) the last one is giving me a bit of trouble... On some clients (both OL2000 and OL2002), the new account is not resolving correctly and instead is resolving to what appears to be the old Exchange 5.5 name (we migrated from Exchange 5.5 back in January)... If I look at the resolved name on the affected clients it appears as /o=NAMFG/ou=CLEVELAND/cn=NA-STORDY/cn=DANIELJULIEN in the _Display Name_ field with all other fields being blank (First name, Last name, all the email addresses, etc are blank)... If I attempt to send the message from the affected clients, I get an Undeliverable message with the following: Two recipients are configured with the same e-mail address. Contact your administrator. mailserver.namfg.com #5.1.4 Other clients and OWA send the message without error and resolve the name properly... There are no abnormal messages in the event log on the Exchange server At first I thought it was a problem with the local name cache on the clients, so I deleted all the .NK2 files, but the issue remains... Recreating the profiles on the affected machines has also yielded no remedy... Both affected and non-affected machines alike show the same server as their GAL server... Searches in the MSKB and Google have returned nothing relevant... Any help, as always, would be greatly appreciated. Exchange 2000/OWA Question
Hello All. Exchange 2000 OWA Windows XP Desktop After the migration from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000, we starting having reports from OWA users that when they tried to send a message or reply to a message that they were then being prompted to put the Office 2000 CD in. I did my homework and found out that it is because multimedia extensions were installed (by default...I think) during the Exchange 2000 install, and the desktops did not install HTML Source Edit. The original installation of Office 2000 came from the network. Now these machines are outside of the network and cannot access the Office 2000 installation from the network when they are prompted for the install of files. Can I turn off multimedia extensions from the Exchange server and if I do what are the ramifications to that now and in the future? What is the best way to handle this? I have approximately 250 machines with this issue. Thanks in advance for any help. RE: Two recipients with the same address error?
The name that is resolving /o=NAMFG/ou=CLEVELAND/cn=NA-STORDY/cn=DANIELJULIEN is the legacyExchangeDN for one of the two mailboxes with the same proxy addresses... do a search in your forest for each of the following: /o=NAMFG/ou=CLEVELAND/cn=NA-STORDY/cn=DANIELJULIEN Daniel Julien I'm betting you will find an entry for each... you then need to decide (based on distinguished name) which one is located in the right spot and then delete the other one... maybe dump it to PST first... change one of the entries to have a different set of proxy addresses and you should then be able to access both mailboxes in order to figure out if there's mail in each. jeff e. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Fyodorov, Andrey Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2003 2:38 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Two recipients with the same address error? RE: Cant pass a relay test.
Did you check the little box which says that this server normally accepts mail for your domain? It's not an open relay if you use your e-mail address and your mail server accepts mail for it... that is what it is supposed to do. Your server 'fails' test 6, and as the testing data indicates that doesn't necessarily mean it is an open relay... since the message isn't in fact relayed, you aren't an open relay. All Exchange servers 'fail' test 6. -Original Message- From: Hansen, Eric [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Posted At: Thursday, September 11, 2003 2:46 PM Posted To: swynk Conversation: Cant pass a relay test. RE: continuous prompt for NT domain credentials
Then probably the RFR or NSPI component of the System Attendant service is misbehaving. RFR is in charge of arranging a meeting between a MAPI client and a Global Catalog. For some reason such a meeting is not taking place. Are there network issues between clients and domain controllers? By the way, which version of Outlook are they using? If it is 2000 or 2002, then RFR may be to blame. Outlook 97 and 98 do not use RFR services, instead they rely on NSPI proxy - the Exchange server talks to GC on their behalf. NSPI normally uses randomly negotiated RPC TCP ports. Have there been any port closures recently? There is a way to tell NSPI to only use specific ports. ahhh ok , thanks. -Original Message- From: Chris Scharff [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2003 2:23 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Cant pass a relay test. RE: Cant pass a relay test.
They also *appear* to fail test 7 BTW. The key is whether they test message is actually delivered or NDR'd. As for receiving an email that you are on the ORDB list... -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Hansen, Eric Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2003 7:17 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Cant pass a relay test. ahhh ok , thanks. -Original Message- From: Chris Scharff [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2003 2:23 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Cant pass a relay test.
