That was my head hitting the desk in shame. This is a fine example that
you shouldn't trust your Jr. Admins notes until you check it yourself.
Sorry for abusing your time in such a manner. Maybe next time I'll have
an intelligent question to ask this group.

Administration, Anti-Virus, Content Filtering, etc. *I need control!*

2002-01-17 Thread David Gibbons

To the group...

We are going to rebuild our exchange environment (current one sucks and I haven't a
clue why it still works) and we wish to attach some administrative tools to the
project. As shown in the subject I've been reviewing tools that my department can use
to streamline anything and everything with our new/current exchange server.

Now I'm looking for real world experience, policies, ideas, pros and cons etc. This
is what I have in my plan so far for exchange Config...

Gateway -Win2000
Firewall -PIX 515
Bridge
Dir. services -Win2000 Exch5.5sp4
Bridge
Information store -Win2000 Exch5.5sp4

3rd party -This is where I'm looking for suggestions

1. Mail Essentials
 -Content filter
-AV with VSAPI (mapi=bad in my world {I hate bricks but have no choice *really, not
kidding*})
 -Spam filter
 -Disclaimer
 -Installed on the gateway

2. Bind View BV-Control
 -Query base administrator
 -Policy enforcement
 -Jr. Admin permission control
 -Security scan and enforcement
 -Performance tuning

Is there a better set of tools out there? What pro/con you all had with these tools?

This is where you all pull out your big sticks and tell me to read the archive or the
FAQ (Not done with it but reading) use send mail, blah blah blah.

Exchange 5.5sp4 and Windows 2000

2002-02-01 Thread David Gibbons

List,

I'm still reading the archives but I have another question that I can't
seem to find the answer to...

I currently have Exchange 5.5sp3 enterprise on NT 4sp6a enterprise. We
are moving to Windows 2000 (member server, no AD in place yet) with
Exchange 5.5sp4 enterprise (16gig limit sucks!).

The question,

Does the enterprise version of Exchange require Windows 2000 Adv.?

Thanks.

IMS Will start and then stop with event ID 4116

2002-02-26 Thread David Gibbons

Hello,

Exchange 5.5sp3 NT 4.0sp6a.
When starting the IMS I process a few emails then I recieve this error:
4116:
An error was returned from the messaging software the Internet Mail
Service uses to process messages on the Microsoft Exchange Server. It is
possible that the piece of mail being processed at the time will be
returned to the sender as a failed delivery instead of being delivered.
The message will be moved to the "BAD" folder, if possible, and the error
is not a temporary error. Otherwise it will be retried when the service is
restarted. Use the appropriate utilities found in the SUPPORT directory of
your Exchange CD to view and manipulate messages that have been moved to
the "BAD" folder.

I get it a 2nd time then I get
4102:
A serious error has occurred while trying to send mail into the Exchange
Information Store. The Internet Mail Service is being shut down.

I try to restart the service and I get
Could not start Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service service on
\\{Server}
Error 2140: An internal Windows NT error occurred

I have tried
Q186739
Q163243
Q169223 (all messages moved out)
Q169686 (150 total)

I looking good on memory and CPU but completely lost as to what to do...
Please help, thanks..

David

True, but I'm payroll and calling PSS is an expence.
To top it all off all of my management isn't feeling this one right now.
They're all at a leadership conf in Las Vegas, so of course I can't call

building I'm getting rid of Groupshield and using Trend. But I have about
1 more month to deal with this exchange server so things like this pop up
and turn my world upside down.

BWT, I'm going to use Ed's server move method. Thanks for the FAQ Ed.

Tell me about it. If it hurts management I get what I need. If it
doesn't, well. I have to brake it to the point that I do get what I
need. The trials of working for a company that counts every penny and
tries to cut any costs that they can.

RE: RBL's

2002-11-04 Thread David Gibbons
Mr. Scharff,

I understand that you’re currently a bit jaded with this topic (or you
could be enjoying yourself not sure... The email intonation module on my
pc is broken *grin*). But, would you mind taking a moment to explain or
send links to previous explanations as to why RBL is not a good idea?
With the research that I have conducted I cannot find any serious issues
with it. Of course I'm missing quite a lot of first hand knowledge with
this technology since I have yet to incorporate within my test
environment.

I fear that I might be apart of that 32% your talking about and wish to...
um... well... *shrug* not be.

Thanks for the input!

not I give kudos to the person that did make that comment.

RE: RBL's

2002-11-05 Thread David Gibbons
Mr. Scharff,

I do monitor the postmaster email box and have tried and tried to ease up
on the content filter but HR is HR and we provide a service to our company
no matter how flawed I feel their thinking my be on issues that they do
not fully understand.

I thank you for this information and will pass it along in my report to
management who, by the by, think RBL is the best thing since sliced bread.
In short, there is too much room from human error and ego for RBL to be
an effective tool to block Spam as well as lack of standardization to
remove one's domain for such a list after testing and the like. Too bad,
RBL seems like a really good idea for Spam control.

Again, I thank you for your input

RE: HELP. Using Ed's server move method. Client issues!

2002-06-11 Thread David Gibbons

I brough the server back up. Everything works fine. I looked at the
profile that I was using to archive mail on user accounts over 2 gigs and
the profile points to my new server. Again outlook works, it's just
really slow unless the other server is online. Heck, everything was fine
with all the exchange services turned off as long as that server was
turned on.

When I moved the accounts to the new server I did check profiles and they
all where re-created and pointed to the new server.

I guess I can unplug the old server from the network and recreate the
outlook profile and see if it works.

Any other ideas?

*sigh* 5 weeks of planning... *hangs head*

Unpluged old exchange from network, recreated profile within outlook...
same issue. After a hang time of 5 to 10 mins everything works fine.
Logoff outlook and log back in. Repeat of issue 5 to 10 min hang time
and everything works fine.

WINS as well as DNS. I checked them both. That was my thought as well.
I can point WINS to the new server if ya think that will help. I'm
personaly leaning to the x500 addresses on all of the accounts for the old
mailbox location.

This is so odd. I even removed the x500 address from this account and

RE: HELP. Using Ed's server move method. Client issues!

2002-06-11 Thread David Gibbons

Ben,

Question... Based on this new information could I leave the old server up
and recreate the profiles (again) and then bring the server down without a
issue.

This is the _exact_ steps that I took to move that accounts in the first
place..

Shut remote center down
move all accounts
login into center
recreate profile (some just a check name and remove add OAB some
progem.exe)
log onto server with remote client
repeat 1200-ist times

Now with this info add..
turn off server
repeat again?

or

RE: HELP. Using Ed's server move method. Client issues!

2002-06-12 Thread David Gibbons

Jim,

Thanks for the info but I have made the new server the first server in
site and I have yet to delete the old server. I just powered it off. I
have tested out some of the computers here and did find that if one of my
techs just did a check name when I move their account and did not
re-create the Outlook address book then they have problems with the hang.
If my tech did what I told them to do or if they got the script and it
completely recreated the profile everything works just fine. So in short,
I'm going to power this server down and delete it and handle the 100 or so
calls for outlook not working.

Thanks for everyones input into my issue.

David.

RE: Odd Client Behavior

2003-02-11 Thread David Gibbons
To the group, (Server-W2K sp3 E5.5sp4 Workstations-W2K OK2000sp3)

I'm having this same issue with one of my client email accounts. It
doesn't matter what PC I create the profile on.

When trying to read a message there is about a 7 sec delay for the client
to mark the message as read. During this time Outlook in lock up with and
hour glass. This can be recreated by right clicking on the message and
changing the status of the message for read to unread. Messages will also
take about 7 sec to be sent. The message will sit in the outbox. This is
very odd. I have run clean sweep for views, forms and rule reply
templates. Still no joy.. Any other ideas?

BTW: New Mail Notification works, no error logs in exchange and this seems
to be the only mailbox in the company having an issue. My email response
time (from the same PC) is just fine. I've hunted the archives and
TechNet and can't seem to find this issue. All KB's point to UDP/New Mail
Notification but I can't find an issue with network connectivity.

Thanks
David Gibbons

Event ID 1025 MSExchangeIS Public

2003-02-19 Thread David Gibbons
(Exch5.5sp4 W2Ksp3)

An error occurred.
Function name or description of problem: FEqEntryId
Error: 0x80040107

Anyone have any ideas on what this error is? All I can really find is a
MAPI error MAPI_E_INVALID_ENTRYID on Google. This looks like it might be
related (VB HEX error code matches) but the site is not in english and
there's no "translate page" in google. If I search on Microsoft I find
Q190993 - XADM: Events Service Fails to Start with MAPI 0x80040107 but,
I'm not having and Event Service issue. Ideas? Please?

Thanks
David Gibbons

Information Store and Single Instance Storage.

2002-05-06 Thread David Gibbons

To All:

Current environment

Test Lab Server 1
Compaq r3000
2 PII 333
1.5gig Ram
1x 4.1gig OS mirror
1x 9.1gig Log mirror
4x 18.1gig Information Store Raid 5
Windows NT 4sp6
Exchange 5.5sp4
Information Store Size 33.2gig (Single Instance) 51gig uncompressed.
768 mailboxes in information store
Container Scheme Container for each location e.g.
 -Center Location 1
 --User
 --User
 --ETC
 -Center Location 2
 --User
 --User
 --Etc

Test Lab Server 2
Compaq ML530
2 PIII Xoen 1gig
2gig Ram
1x 18.1gig OS Mirror
1x 18.1gig Log Mirror
4x 36gig Information Store Raid 5
Windows 2000sp2
Exchange 5.5sp4

We wish to use Ed's server move method to replace the current hardware
that our exchange server is sitting. We also wish to move all user out of
there current containers and set them in the root of the exchange server
and use address book views for our GAL(ie the right way) Within Ed's
server move method I can use the server to server move and not lose single
instance store (according to Microsoft Q white papers) with all email on
the old server and retain my 33.2gig database on the new server. As soon
as I use Bind view or exmerge to get all the mailboxes out of there
containers and into the root I lose single instance store and have a 50gig
database on the new server. Does anyone know how to move mailboxes out of
their containers and into the root without having to use a .pst and losing
single instance storage?

RE: Information Store and Single Instance Storage.

2002-05-06 Thread David Gibbons

Chris and Martin,

Thanks for the information. *sigh* My manager's going to hate me. But
that's what a test lab is for right?

As for E2K,

I've yet to really look at it as a possabiliy so my first question is...

Can I run E2K is it own domain with a DC blah blah blah... Leaving my
current NT 4 domain intact and setup a trust between the 2 domains, add
the E2K server to my current site and move all the users to it?

We're not quite ready to move to 2000 yet so I need to work between the
lines.

RE: Information Store and Single Instance Storage.

2002-05-06 Thread David Gibbons

Chris,

Currently all of our _wonderful_ users depend on the containers to help
them figure out who's at a center or to send email to everyone at that
center and we do not use address book views at this time. We have a high
transfer rate here and every time some moves from one center to another I
have to move that mailbox. Also we're 62 centers strong and are looking
at adding 30 more centers before the end of this year. The container's
are a pain right now and will become a nightmare by the end of the year.
Also, my boss doesn't like it and I have to give him what he wants I
just wish his previous staff set it up correctly.

Now, if we drill everyone down to the root anytime I have a new user hire
or a transfer I just need to change the information in their profile and
can manage all the mailbox resources via an address book view instead of
hard moves and complicated scripting.

Profile Maker How to?

2002-05-21 Thread David Gibbons

Hey all

I'm maving quite a few problems with my exchange server move (yes I tested
it and none of this stuff happened in test so I'm stuck with it). I'm
moving from one server to another and into another container. I was using
a 3rd party tool that failed me completly in the live enviroment
(BindView). So here I am, I need to update all the profiles in my company
with a login scrip and wish to use Modprof from Microsoft. I need it to
append the new server name to the exchange profile, problem... I can't
figure out how to use the darn thing. Does anyone have a sample *.prf
that is not the Outlook.prf that you can download from Microsoft? It has
everything in it and I just need the exchange server and can't fiugure out
how to pull all the unneeded text from it so I can test it.

Thanks
David (Really tired with a caffee IV) Gibbons.

SMTP Relay with IIS

2002-05-22 Thread David Gibbons

Well,

Here's yet another issue that I'm having that I hope someone can help me
out with.

Exchange 5.5sp4 on w2k

IIS5 SMTP on w2k

I am tring to forward all email from my exchange server through the SMTP
server. I can recieve email just fine and although I have setup the relay
server to allow relay to the ip and dns name of my exchange server I still
get

Reporting-MTA: dns;mail2.calibercollision.com
Received-From-MTA: dns;a-exch-pri.calibercollision.com
Arrival-Date: Tue, 21 May 2002 19:00:50 -0700

Final-Recipient: rfc822;[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Action: failed
Status: 5.0.0
Diagnostic-Code: smtp;550 Relaying is prohibited

Any ideas?

Thanks
