Smarthost question
I'm having trouble with routing emails within an Exchange organization using a Smarthost. Here's the situation: Exchange 2000 is installed in 2 separate AD sites (1 Exchange org). An eSafe box is installed in Site1 that is supposed to scan all SMTP traffic. There is an internal link between Site 1 and Site 2 which are on separate subnets. The main MX record points to the eSafe box in Site1. When I configure the SMTP Virtual Server to send all mail to the eSafe Smarthost first, no mail routes to Site2. It stays in a loop between eSafe and the Exchange server in Site1. When I check the box to attempt local delivery first, all mail (including external mail) gets sent directly to the recipient bypassing the eSafe box. Since no MX record points directly to the Exchange server, recipients who do reverse DNS lookups are bouncing the mail. MS says that to get this to work, ensure the Exchange server does not have a path to the Internet. Can anyone suggest a better way to set this up so Exchange sends all Internal mail to the Internal Exchange server in Site 2 and External mail to the eSafe box? _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchange&text_mode=&lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Patrick - This IS the backend server - there is no separate OWA server and they won't allow any separate server (like an ISA or certificate server). They did "relent" somewhat and will now allow SSL. You could even limit those to only the ports necessary for it to function. Then you'd need to open the firewall for type 50 traffic (ESP IPSec), port 500 TCP for IKE (Key Exchange), and port 88 TCP for Kerberos. Also, you can get a server certificate for the OWA server and lock it down to SSL only so usernames and passwords aren't passed over the internet in the clear. Yes, you only need port 80 to the backend server, you need more significant access to the DCs. You'll need to lock DS traffic to a specific high-number port -- there's a Q article on it. RE: x.400 name
I'm not sure about the x.400 spec, but if you are upgrading from 5.5 to 2000 then you are correct. Since 2000 requires Active Directory, AD follows the standard BIND DNS naming conventions. It only allows letters, numbers or a hyphen. An underscore is allowed in a NetBIOS naming convention, but not in AD. This info is found in RFC952 in the Lexical Grammar section (I had this info on file from a customer site and it was not the easiest documentation to find!). -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, March 12, 2003 10:01 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: x.400 name Does anyone know of any issues with an x.400 address that contains an underscore. Charles - I fully agree and have successfully sent email through by telnetting from the Exchange server to that domain. What I'm trying to figure out is how to ensure this doesn't happen in the future as the issue is sporadic, but is quite perturbing to the customer. RE: Strange 550 error
Bill - The mail was not coming from optonline.net, but from a customer site using a different ISP to another domain. I didn't change the error at all - it's a copy and paste from the log. I didn't post the domains as I'm not sure if the customer would appreciate it in a public forum. As for Optonline, it is a cable modem provider (excellent speeds!), but it does allow people inside the network to relay - send out messages with no regard for where it is coming from or where it is going to. If I'm NOT inside this network though, it does not allow relaying. The other half of the message is that it's not a gateway, so it will not pass on what appears to be a non-local address. If you could give us the address to which you are sending, even in the format @theaddress.tld, we might be able to guess a little better. Oh, and did you munge the 550 message at all, or is that how it appeared verbatim? FWIW, there has been some discussion of your provider, optonline.com, on news.admin.net-abuse.email in recent days, with the general concensus (hah!) being that optonline is not a spammer, just a cable modem provider with a lot of potentially abusable clients. RE: E2K Logging question
Michael - Thank you very much for the assistance today. I finally found the problem: I was looking in the SMTP logs in %windir%\system32\logfiles, not in correct place of C:\Program Files\Exchsrv\server.log directory. Once looking in the correct log, I found the outgoing email. This of course led to another issue in that the email was going to a Contact, but it didn't go to the Primary SMTP address of that contact, it went to a secondary address listed in the Addresses tab of the Contacts properties. The contact had two SMTP addresses set up. The email was sent to the one that was NOT set as the primary address (and was NOT listed as the address in the general page of the Contacts properties). When I tried to delete the non-primary address, I received an error message "This is the home e-mail address of the recipient. It cannot be removed." I worked around this by deleting the entire contact, then creating two contacts, one each with the SMTP address. Anyone with idea why this happened? Time in logs is 7 hours greater than the actual time
Hello! I am trying to track down some "missing" emails that were sent but never received. Since it is has been more than just once or twice a day to many different domains, I have been able to rule out user error. Looking through the Exchange logs, trying to synch up the times the emails were sent with the times in the logs, I noticed that the log file is 7 hours ahead of the actual time. This is evidenced in that the last event in the log is always 7 hours ahead of the present time. I have checked the time on the machine and the Time Zone and all are correct. This is a single server AD environment with W2K SP3, Exchange 2K SP3 on the same server. Is there any way to synch up the logs to match when they were actually sent? Trend tech support thought it had to do with Exchange 2000 default of "Limit number of messages per connection" to 20 (Default SMTP properties>Messages). M drive mapping removal?
I came across this Q article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q305145&sd=tech Which explains "...Microsoft recommends that you remove the drive M mapping to the IFS, unless you are using the IFS for specific reasons..." I have never seen a reason to use this feature, and have even seen Norton AntiVirus cause corruption when the customer "accidentally" scanned the M drive. Pros/Cons of removing the M drive? Has anyone incorporated this into their best practices in deploying Exchange? Exchange 2000 and Exchange 5.5 in different domains
Upgrading a customer to a new AD domain from NT. They presently have 1 NT domain and 2 Exchange sites. They want to start fresh as there is a lot of "crap" in the old domain, so they will have the new Windows 2000/Exchange 2000 environment running concurrently with the old NT/Exchange 5.5 environment. The only way I can see these 2 environments synchronizing is via the ADC Inter-Organizational Connection Agreement. I'm a little reluctant to use this as it does not synch up the Public Folders. When using a Smart Host, mail does not flow between Exchange serversbut does to the Internet
Having trouble getting internal email flowing between Exchange servers when we setup a smart host. Here's the scenario: A single AD Domain spanning 2 AD Sites. In each location there is at least 1 DC working as a GC server and an Exchange 2000 Server. Replication is working correctly as changes made in one site shows up in the other site. We are trying to forward all email through a Smart Host (Trend Micro InterScan Messaging Security Suite). When we configure the Virtual SMTP Server properties on both servers to forward to the Smart Host, Internet email works just fine but internal email between the servers just sits in the respective outgoing queues. The queues have the name of the other Exchange server so it knows where to send it, but the mail just sits there. We have tried Forcing the connection and Freezing and Unfreezing the queue with no luck. The queue says it is Active (as opposed to Ready), but the mail just sits there. The only way email flows between the two servers is if we bypass the Smart Host altogether. We have tried using local delivery before sending to the Smart Host and not, but either way has not helped. After each change we have stopped and started both the Virtual SMTP server and the SMTP Service. Since the mail is not leaving the Exchange queue, I can't point the issue to Trend as the mail never leaves the Exchange server. Keeping Outlook Profile settings while upgrading from NT4/X5.5 to newW2K/E2K
Upgrading a single NT4 Exchange 5.5 environment to a new W2K Exchange 2000 environment using a new AD Domain (1 server does it all in both environments) . Users are a mix of NT4, W2K and XP Pro workstations using Outlook 2000 or Outlook XP. Using Exmerge on 5.5 to create a .PST file for each user, then again on E2K to import those .PST files. Most of the users have highly customized Outlook bar settings. Any suggestions on how to keep these settings? I've tried the XP Files and Settings Transfer Wizard for the XP machines, but it would not recreate the Outlook shortcuts (I guess because it's a different server even though the shortcuts point to the same information). _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Alexander - You are very fortunate as Symantec does not support the Corporate Edition scanning Exchange. They require the actual NAV for Microsoft Exchange. RE: Troubleshooting POP3 Access to a Front-End server in a DMZ
Thanks to everyone for the feedback on this issue. I didn't have control (or the skill set) over the PIX but the mail was magically flowing out of Outlook Express via POP3. I'm assuming Port 25 wasn't open as was originally promised. Trouble is, the mail is staying in the SMTP queue on the Front-End server. I'm not sure why the messages are flowing to the front-end server, but they are. I was under the impression that this server was only supposed to forward requests, not send mail. When I look at the properties of the domains awaiting delivery in the SMTP queue on the Front-End Server, I see this message: "An internal DNS error caused a failure to find the remote server". >From the front-end server, I can do an nslookup of the mail server for the domains in question. I can also telnet to port 25 of the mail servers for the remote domains. Not sure why these are sitting in the queue. When the external PIX firewall is opened up from the DMZ to a specific domain, the mail flows. Any ideas why we would have to open up the external firewall to a domain to send it mail or how can I get the Internal server to send the Mail instead? RE: Exchange 5.5 to 2000 Upgrade horror story
Tom - I found this to be a great post as I'll be doing the same exact thing in about 3 weeks for a customer! Let us know how you make out. Jeff -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Tom.Gray Sent: Friday, August 02, 2002 12:41 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Exchange 5.5 to 2000 Upgrade horror story This is just an informational post, you're welcome to comment on it but I'm not really asking any questions. Just thought folks out there getting ready to upgrade might want to hear the story. I just spent the night upgrading (or trying to upgrade) my exchange 5.5 server. We have a very simple network. 1 domain. 200 users. 1 exchange server. 2 domain controllers (not the exchange server). Started about 2 weeks ago prepping for upgrade. Armed with: White Paper "in-place upgrade from msoft exchange 5.5 to msoft exchange 2000" Q316886 "How To: Migrate from exchange server 5.5 to exchange 2000 server Q282309 "upgrading exchange server 5.5 service pack 4 to exchange 2000 server" Q295922 "considerations when you upgrade to exchange 2000 server" Q296260 "how to configure a two-way recipient connection agreement for exchange server 5.5 users" Q253829 "description of the active directory connector deletion mechanism" And, of course, monitored this list (and the sun-exchange) one for upgrade ideas! Now some of the documents have conflicting information. If you weed thru the dates and such you can usually figure out what is really true. For example, the white paper states you MUST have at least one domain running in native mode, but the HOW TO describes a scenario where all domains are in mixed mode. With the domain controllers upgraded to win2k active directory (mixed mode) last month I tackled the exchange upgrade this month. Went thru the white paper and how to, updating the schema (forestprep and domainprep) and ran all the tests listed in those docs to verify it was working. Got exactly the results they told me! First time I ran the actual upgrade got my first rude surprise. My vendor had shipped me the Exchange 2000 standard edition media (which doesn't really say standard on it, just Exchange 2000) and the upgrade process stopped immediately with "You can't go from enterprise to standard you idiot" Two days later I have the correct media. Take the server off the network and run an online backup (Veritas backup exec with exchange option). Verify the backup worked. With exchange services down get back on the network and run domain tests again. Everything ok! Run the upgrade! The upgrade goes thru several processes but hangs at "Setup failed while installing sub-component "Site Replication Service with error code 0xC007041D" -- retry or cancel" search MS knowledge base and looks like a permissions issue (Q278254 and Q273730). Hmm, make sure the exchange service account has all the permissions and click retry. Still no work. Rats. Getting late so time to make the $250 call to PSS! PSS steps me thru lots of stuff, nothing works. They have me change the service account user permissions at the ORG container from CUSTOM to SERVICE ACCOUNT (i'm probably not saying this exactly correct). Still no joy. Try to cancel out of that error message. Nada. Have to task manager/shut down process. They then refer me to the ultimate nightmare: Q264309 - How to Roll Back A failed Upgraded from Exchange Server 5.5. to Exchange 2000. Yuck. Go into registry and delete the stuff, rename the exchsrvr folders, uninstall IIS, restart server, install IIS, re-apply all service packs and hotfixes (that really sucks), delete the renamed exchsrvr folders, setup /r exchange 5.5, restore directory and info store. Restoring directory service doesn't work. Call PSS back. Directory service was trying to start and got hung, can't restore to hung service. Change to manual start and reboot. Directory restores!!! Restore info store. (8 gigs). 2 hours later ready to go! (almost) Now the internet mail connector isn't working. Dawn is breaking and panic begins to creep in. Users will be screaming in about 2 hours. Call PSS again. End up deleting the IMC and creating a new one. They very patiently step me through lots of good stuff, including making sure I'm not an internet relay and that I'm not doing circular logs. They even stand by while I reinstall my Anti-virus for exchange. Everything is working. It's now 7am and I'm back to my original pre-upgrade status from 7pm the night before. Problem summary: PSS thinks that the problem was caused by the mail service account user not having complete permissions at the org container. By the time this was corrected by PSS (and me) the upgrade was stuck. They are "pretty sure" and "reasonably confident" the upgrade will work next time. Moral: MAKE BACKUPS. PLAN FOR EXTRA TIME. PSS is your friend (I was on the phone with them for about 4 hour

I'm seeking information about what could be causing this crash. Today I did a manual live update of my Norton Antivirus for Exchange and immediately the server stopped responding to Outlook. I was unable to log onto the console because it wouldn't respond to Ctrl-Alt-Del. I was unable to connect to shares on the Exchange Server, I couldn't get to the Exchange Server event log from another computer and OWA didn't respond. I was able to telnet to port 25. It was apparent from the disk activity lights that NAV was scanning the info store with the new antivirus definitions. So, the system was semi-comatose but not dead. I finally powered the system down and back up to regain control. Fortunately it came back up without major problems. There were no messages in the error log that indicate the cause of the problem. Earlier in the week when it crashed I wasn't here. The symptom that I'm certain of is that it wasn't responding to Outlook. In this instance it was not associated with a live update. I'm guessing the system responded exactly the same this time as it did for me today (although that is not what I'm being told). The guy who was here when it crashed claims he logged on and started the DS service and then it started responding. He then claims he shut the system down and started it up. I question that he is telling the truth because there was no indication in the event log that DS was started. Furthermore, upon restart the system said it was rebuilding the mirrored drives because the system was shut down dirty. So, I think he tried to log on and wasn't able to log on so he powered the system off. I'm using NAV Version: 2.14 (Build 71). Two questions - 1) What is causing this? 2) What is the appropriate way to handle this situation? I hate powering the system off for fear of corrupting the info store. Thanks for your help. RE: OWA Setup on a different machine on XCH2000 SP2
Thanks to all who replied! Bottom line is we will be using just the OWA on the lone Exchange Server on the LAN (not in the DMZ). I'm still a little uncomfortable allowing traffic from the Internet onto the server, but it seems the best of all "evils" so to speak. There's also the fact that the customer would not be too happy shelling out the $$ for the Enterprise edition. In answer to your question, Tony, yes you need the Enterprise Edition to use a Front-End Server (your OWA server). ForestPrep
I have a brand new installation of a Forest, with two Domain Controllers in the same lone domain. DNS is successfully configured on one of the servers and I'm attempting to install Exchange 2000 on the other. Running ForestPrep, gave me this error: "Either you do not have permission to update the Active Directory schema or Active Directory service is currently too busy." Since I was logged in as administrator, that could not be correct. I doublechecked that the admin was a member of Administrators, Domain Administrators and Enterprise Administrators. Looking at Technet, I found Q274196 which said I had to start the Remote Registry Service. When I looked, it was already started. Rebooted and then was able to successfully run ForestPrep. When I tried to run DomainPrep, I got this error: "Setup has detected that ForestPrep has not been run on this machine. Please run ForestPrep before attempting to run DomainPrep in this domain. For more information please see the installation documentation." Found Q287576 and followed the advice about looking in the registry key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Setup). Sure enough it was not there. Looking on the harddrive in the path I pointed Exchange to when I ran ForestPrep shows no files. I reran ForestPrep, and it says it ran successfully, yet the same thing is happening - no files in the path and DomainPrep cannot run.
