RE: Migrating from GroupWise 6.5
The problem here is that Greg's opinion is that accepting gifts presents a real or perceived conflict of interest. The key point being the word perceived. The statement covers all eventualities. If the CoI is not real, it remains possible for it to be perceived - even by only one individual - therefore proving the statement correct, even when technically (not real) it is incorrect. Therefore we have a circular argument on which it seems people will not budge. I don't believe I have mis-characterised or mis-read any of the post and am addressing the basic premise. Now can we move on? -Original Message- From: Greg Deckler [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 18 December 2003 00:52 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Migrating from GroupWise 6.5 People mis-characterize and read things into my posts that are not there. This one I have to do in-line. First of all, I've seen plenty of statements by people who accurately depict reasons that your opinion is bunk. You've either not read or not comprehended them. No one in 8 years has proven the statement flawed or illogical that when you work in an industry and accept gifts from vendors in that industry that it presents a real or perceived conflict of interest. This has been the point since day one, is the point today and will be the point tomorrow and the next day and the next. I've seen your comments repeatedly over the years, and continue to disagree with them. Its also painfully obvious to a casual observer that you're using incorrect statements in defense of your position. And ethics are not passed as laws. There is no law that a company's employees cannot accept gifts. The ethics that lawyers and doctors follow are also not laws. While this is technically accurate, in fact it is inaccurate. Both these professions require licenses to practice. Lawyers who decide to cross a relatively arbitrary line involving a conflict of interest can and have been disbarred - in other words, their license to practice law is revoked. Doctors, too, can have their medical license suspended or revoked. In either case, they are not allowed to practice their profession without that license. Ergo, those professions' codes of ethics *are*, if somewhat indirect, law. Yes, I understand and know all that, but that was not the point. Ethics go far, far beyond mere laws. Lawyers can be disbarred for ethics violations but not face any criminal prosecution. Yes, they can also be disbarred AND face criminal prosecution, but the point was made in response to an argument that indicated that ALL ethics must be legislated. Don't take things out of context. Your most asinine statements, however, are your explicit statements that being awarded a vendor sponsored honor automatically removes any and all objectivity for those on whom the honor is bestowed. The fact that you repeatedly use that argument shows me how weak your argument really is, especially since you can't show a single instance of where this actually has happened. I don't say this. I say that it is a real or perceived conflict of interest and hence a violation of basic ethics. I have stated repeatedly that MVP's may well NEVER cause anyone to ACT unethically. And guess what? It is irrelevant, it is still a real or perceived conflict of interest. What part of this are you missing? Because the MVP community is both under NDA's to Microsoft and also has private community newsgroups, you don't see that MVP's as a group are some of the most critical of Microsoft's products and policies. But none of that matters to you, because we're all just in Microsoft's pockets anyways. Its not like 12 of the 24 servers I've deployed this year run non-Microsoft OS's or anything.[1] Again, it does not matter if MVP is the greatest thing since sliced bread, results in world peace and gives every starving kid a home. None of that changes that it is a real or perceived conflict of interest. Again, it matters not one bit if MVP's act unethically or not, it is a conflict of interest plain and simple. I would be willing to bet that most if not all of the MVP's do NOT act unethically because of the title. Guess what? Doesn't matter. Still an violation of basic conflict of interest rules. So, I think its fair to say that you've not come even remotely close to proving to anyone where this alleged conflict of interest is, and how it negatively impacts our objectivity. I didn't say that it negatively impacts your objectivity, I said it has the *potential* to impact your objectivity. Why? Because it is a real or perceived conflict of interest. And, in the interest of full disclosure, two of the three accolades in my signature line are from Microsoft, obviously the last two. The first (MTS) was bestowed by my employer. Does that mean I'm instantly biased towards my employer? You obviously fail to understand what I am talking about. Roger

RE: Migrating from GroupWise 6.5
Oh for f**ks sake get over this. At the end of the day we are *only* IT Professionals providing a service. We're not that important in the bigger picture. Sure, some will abuse their position and that's a not too nice part of human nature - greed and nepotism. Full stop. It happens all the time in business and in ALL society. If you really have a problem with 'ethics' then direct it towards bigger fish like the fact the White House administration (amongst many other 'democratic' administrations) awards the billion dollar contracts to their buddies. Now that would make an interesting read. Ideal setup for exch 2003?
I've been asked to get a 'wish list' together for next years budget so I'm going all out for an upgrade from present setup: Small Business Server 2k (inc exch2k) to PDC running W2k3 on present box but will need a new box for Exch2k3 What would be a (relatively sensible) 'ideal' setup. I've read the recommended from MS but seem to recall that Exch 5.5 ran better on dual processors. Does this apply to Exch 2k3 or am I imagining things/ making it up? Or you could use some form of collaboration software such as Outlook Team Folders (similar to PF's but more versatility)- unsupported by MS at present but it looks good. Our users work per two, i.e. a scientiific officer and an assistant. They get a lot of emails about certain projects, but after a while emails get lost, people don't know who replied etc... Now they want a system where the two people working together establish a sort of directory structure in which they can create a folder per project and keep all correspondance in there (not as a public folder). The lifespan of a project can be up to fice years so the volume of emails will be quite big. We have about 10 'couples' like that and what they want to dio is put eachother in CC for each response/received email, so that's already a duplication. Problem is that the diskspace on the E2K server has about 10 GB left so I'm worried about that fact, and I don't know whether using the archive function in Outlook (XP) is a good option. FW: Re-assign/ Move mailbox
I did reply to this but am not sure if it came through. Thanks Tony that was a great help - forgot about the retention time - d'oh. I did have a bit of trouble doing this tho as when I deleted the user, there was no red cross against the mailbox so I could not re-attach. Ran clean-up agent and came up OK for future ref. -Original Message- From: Tony Hlabse [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 15 September 2003 14:11 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Re-assign/ Move mailbox It's okay to delete the mailbox if you have retention set on the Store. One of the BETTER qualities of this product is that you can tune it so that a domain only gets one message for the number of people subscribed, rather than one message per recipient. (i.e. twenty users are listed at BELLSOUTH.NET.. Only one message gets sent to BELLSOUTH.NET) You can also chunk the traffic so that you don't flood out your ISP. I've been tasked with running similar stuff over the pond here. I've tried a few if the cheaper versions you can get off download.com and they were pretty rubbish. Setting mailbox permissions
Hi, I have a site running ex2000 sp3 on an sbs2000 (windows2k sp3) box where all permissions on the mailboxes have been set to default =none. I have been asked to change calendar permissions to reviewer and rather than doing each mailbox individually, I am attempting to use the setperm tool. Is anyone familiar with this? It is available from http://www.mailsoftware.co.uk/downloads.html and is also listed on the slipstick site: http://www.slipstick.com/exs/permissions.htm I have not used this before and when I read the read me it mentioned some prerequisites: 1. Microsoft Outlook installed without Security Patch (Ensure CDO is installed - This is not the case with Outlook 2000) 2. ACL.DLL registered. Use regsvr32 acl.dll 3. Logged on as user with Permissions Admin or greater on relevant mailboxes. 3 I am fine on but 1 2 I am not sure - 1) does the security patch refer to oulook98? The version I will be running the app from will be Outlook2002 - I know that cdo is part of this but do I need to install it separately? 2)acl.dll is not on my system (XP) appears to be an uncompiled part of the platform sdk. Am i correct in this? What would be the way to proceed ot should I avoid this if I have not used cdo before and just manually configure the mailboxes? Outlook team folders
Has anyone used the Outlook Team folders that is now discontinued? I'm trying to get the outlook team folders wizard to work on my system (sbs2000/ exch 2000 sp3) however I am getting the following error: Error: occurred during HTTP publishing of Web files. Select OK to try another destination to publish your files to or Cancel to exit the wizard. According to Q250861 I need to install it on NT4 then upgrade - not an option. However, on http://www.slipstick.com/dev/teamfolders.htm it states I need to install the web publishing wizard which I have done however I am still getting the error. Does this require a reboot to get it to work? Or any other ideas? Help on Q327378
Hi, I've been reading q327378 about changing mailbox size limits in a reasonable time and have added the value for the exchangeIS. Should I be concerned that there is not the value for Dsaccess\Instance0\CacheTTLUser in my registry or one for Mailbox cache limit? If not concerned I can just go ahead and add it, right? FW: Outlook prob removing old account
Hi, Exch 2k sp3 outlook 2k As per Ed's 'never restore' method, I have set up mailbox retention on my departing users. I gave permission to the admin account to access a users mailbox who has departed in order to check any emails. I have since deleted the mailbox and account within AD however I still have the mailbox showing under folder list for the admin account. I have removed it from the admin account properties advanced tab under outlook so I am not sure why it would still be there. Has anyone got any ideas a) why it still may be there b) how to remove it from there? I'm thinking either stop/ start IS or recreate account/ mailbox. Google/ Technet didn't throw up anything I could find but then that may be my search criteria. Priv1.edb and stm
Hi, Exch 2k on sbs2k - all SP'd up I had a little scare earlier on with a simultaneous virus alert on one user and a disk space warning from my server which turned out to be totally unconnected however while I was trouble shooting a noticed a couple of odd things: 1) disk space on the server was decreasing rapidly from 8gb 7.5 6.5 gb in the space of about 5 mins - anyone experienced this before? 2) my priv1.edb is @ 7.2 gb while the stm file was at 2.9gb. I looked at my users mailboxes and the total size of their mailboxes was under 6gb. Why would the the two priv files be more than my users mailboxes if the edb + stm = information store? I'm probably missing something here as I'm still pretty new to exch2k? Quick question re backup
Using exch 2000 sp3 with backupexec 8.6 for sbs2000: If I am backing up the microsoft information store but not microsoft exchange mailboxes or the M: drive then there is no point in backing up program files\exchsrvr is there? Or should I still backup the program files\exchsrvr directory but deselect the mdb data directory? I thought I had set up the backup procedure so that I wasn't doing BLB's but I had to examine the procedure closely as I am having trouble getting all our data onto a 40/80gb dltIV tape with hardware compression enabled (otherwise software). I've had a look at the faq and had a good search around the archives etc but cannot find a definitive answer on this. Strange attachment problem
Hi all, have searched archives/ technet and done a google but no joy... I have a user who is using Outlook98 on our exch 2k server She has been complaining that a recipient never receives attachments from her. I have tested her logged into another pc - still on outlook 98 and recipient got the attachment. Sending the mail from another users mailbox also resolves this (using w98/outlook 98 and also XP/outlook2002). I have since set her up on the pc that seemed to send from her account ok and the recipient still is not receiving attachment but I sent it to my home account and got that ok. Is it a problem at our end or could it be the recipients problem? I'm a bit puzzled... RE: Strange attachment problem
Thanks but perhaps I wasn't clear. The recipient will get the attachment if *sent* from another mailbox - tested from a w98/outlook98 pc and a xp/outlook2002 pc and from users mailbox when configured on another pc (w98 or xp) on another pc. When I send from the users w98/outlook98 pc, the recipient doesn't get attachment. I've checked all the mailbox restrictions and they are all set as default. RE: Sending email from different companies.
It depends on what you want to achieve... If these people are to *always* send from company B (new company)then just add the new (smtp) mail address in their mailbox properties and set that as primary/ reply address. Alternatively, if they only need to send occassionally, then set up another mailbox for these users, set the mail address as above, assign it to the relevant users and create a new profile for outlook on their pc's. They can then chose to go into either account (by setting up the 'prompt for user' in outlook). You could also go further and set delegate permissions etc. Rob -Original Message- From: Kevan Dickinson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 25 November 2002 11:58 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Sending email from different companies. RE: Move Exch2k to a new server
What type of server is the advanced server (ie pdc/ member)? SBS is a pdc so if you've set up the new server as that also, I don't think it's possible. You could put the 2 servers on different network segments and exmerge - or exmerge and copy to backup tape. You can use the csvde or ldifde to create the users/ mailboxes - plenty of articles on technet about this Upgrading to backoffice when you already have an advanced server there is a bit of a waste of money (unless you are going to use it but the way I read you it is going away) I recently had to merge 2 domains - one on existing sbs2k and the other on sbs4.5 Used exmerge, data to tape and import onto sbs2k - worked a treat. -Original Message- From: Ed Crowley [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 18 November 2002 17:31 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Move Exch2k to a new server I am not an SBS expert but I don't believe you can use my method to upgrade an SBS server. RE: Quick disaster recovery question (if there is such thing)
I had a similar setup at my old place. We had an online spare server that was setup to xcopy relevant files (*.edb/etc)from exch server to itself over night. However, we had created a dual boot on it. primary boot was just as member server that was effectively an archive box but secondary boot was a mirror of the exch server. that way, when (and it did) the exch server went down, I simply took out the exch server and booted the backup (used netdom to remove and add the servers to the network)into its secondary config. Ran isinteg patches etc and voila was online in about an hour or so. disadvantage was that it lost the days emails tho... RE: Exchange server migration
I had a similar migration going from sbs4.5 (site1) to sbs2k (site2) Used exmerge and it went like a dream but I din't have public folders and as far as i recall, public folders cannot be done. There are some articles on technet (see sbs2000 upgrade migration white papers) which tell you how to go about this. You'll need a decent amount of disk space as exmerge copies users mailboxes to individual *.pst files which are then imported. (make sure you check the attributes of the pst files - sometimes can put a readonly which must be taken off) Make sure your users clear out as much cr*p out of their mailboxes. I've got some notes if you'd like me to pmail them to you? For your company users or to resell? If the former, OWA - no, not company users - already have OWA thanks so would be 'reselling' How many users do you want to have on the system, and what it is the purpose of said system. well, I've been asked to think about 10,000 users/ subscribers but whether we get that amount is another matter! It's basically to offer our customers on the retail side of the business an alternative to hotmail etc - so they can have a 'lifestyle' email address. The retail side of our business has mail/internet order and also 15 shops nationwide and we sell skateboards/ inline blades/ bmx's and clothing/ accessories. Do you have a fireproof safe at all? I would have thought you would even if you are a small business. To get a little (boltdown)safe that is fireproof for an hour or so (hopefully long enough for the fire service to get there plus maybe put it somewhere sensible) isn't too expensive and you can put all your system media in there as well. RE: urgent backup problem
OK, continuing on this theme then, can I install exch admin onto an XP machine - I'm aware that it can be installed onto nt4 ws and w2k but xp? Searched technet/ archives and google but no answer yet. - oh yeah and I've also tried and tested it but... this leads me to my second prob: only got exch on sbs 4 and sbs4.5 upgrade disks and it didn't let me install as not sbs. Hi, exch2k and outlook2000 enviroment: A user has had an ndr sent to him but when he tried to open it, it failed to open (using outlook 2000) and just hung. Is there anyway of viewing this mail within the administrator program? I have had a look in the badmail directory but it is not in there as it has been delivered to his mailbox. You'll have to forgive me as I'm still getting my head round exch2k. I have had this before for a previous client who was running exch5.5 and all I did for this was logon to his mailbox (using the basic mail program) and check the relevant ndr but i can't do this this time as the server has outlook2k on it and has the same problem. tia Rob Support Analyst T.K.C. RE: Resource Scheduling
I had a similar environment in my old job which was on an exch5.5 server. If i needed to check how had sent the meeting requests, I think the way I did was just to log on to that mailbox using the mail client on the server and checking the inbox. I'm afraid I can't remember exactly how I did it but it was similar. There are probably better ways of doing it tho. -Original Message- From: Crump, Jay [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 16 August 2002 14:23 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Resource Scheduling while logged on with the conf room profile, go to Tools, Options, Calendar Options. exmerge or not?
Hi all, I am planning a migration from 5.5 to an existing 2k/AD server because of an office relocation. 2 different sites which are not connected but same domain (kind of... Under NT the domain is called mydomain and under SBS2k it is mydomain.co.uk). I've read up on the WP and also related KB, plus the Ed Cowley move server method - I tried to read to read appendix k in the faq but it will not enlarge. Any reason why? They don't quite seem to address what I have to do tho. Anyway, I would like your opinions on the best way to migrate the data - Would the best way to do it just connect the 2 sites once they are physically together and use the migration wizard? Or should I use exmerge or can I use the alternate method of copying the edb files? If i copy the edb, how to I get the data in that into the exch2k edb files? Would I also be correct in assuming that if I use the migration wizard, then the user accounts will also be created? Has anyone ran a similar migration before? This will be tested 1st of course. Your manager is convinced that there are hotfixes that you haven't found yet. Okay, just (for the sake of the argument), assume he's right - always a good career move to give the boss the benefit of the doubt. If/when you find the info about the hotfix that you don't have, where are you going to get it from? Microsoft PSS, that's where. So I assume your boss is happy to crash the $199 or whatever a PSS call costs these days - and if he's right, and it's a hotfix, they'll refund your card. So just short circuit the search, and ring PSS anyway - tell 'em the symptoms, and ask 'em for the hotfix. If they've got one, you get it and your fee back, and your boss off your back. If not, PSS (not you) prove him wrong, and the $199 he gambled is gone. Either way, so is the problem. When you ask him to gamble his $199, he might suddenly not be so sure about a hotfix you don't have. Let us know the outcome. The default entry is C:\Turfdir but you can change the path by altering a registry entry. Look on the MS KBase for this registry entry..don't remember it. Also does anyone have a list of Spam domains that I can put in, in addition to the address I already have? 3. Where is the folder called Turf suppose to be in MS Exchange 5.5, where all of the filtered e-mails are suppose to go. I did a search for it and it didn't find it. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. RE: exchange 5 relay/spamming
Thanks for the help. Have ended up just turning off routing/ relaying as it wasn't needed. Couldn't do anything else to prevent the out queue being clogged apart from install a firewall and have mail routed thru the ISP smtp mail server which is up-to-date. -Original Message- From: Chris Scharff [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 22 July 2002 16:01 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: exchange 5 relay/spamming Exchange 5.0 has two options when it comes to relaying. Allow it, or don't. If you need more granular control, you'll need to upgrade. -Original Message- From: Rob [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Saturday, July 20, 2002 7:25 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: exchange 5 relay/spamming I've already read the faq an plenty of Q articles, and in my opinion, that article (and most others) only relates to exchange 5.5. I do not have routing restiction button under the routing tab. Q169683 refers to putting a # sign infront of any routed domains - do I do this when adding the routed domain - ie #domain.com inbound ? My problem is the software they are running is old - SBS 4 and exchange 5 sp2. I cannot get the upgrade (to SBS 4.5 which includes exch 5.5) in the UK as it is discontinued and you cannot technically upgrade to SBS 2k - it is a fresh install. I've turned routing off for now as I found that it was not necessary and also switched the IMS off over the weekend but when the IMS is on, the administrators mailbox is filled with ndr's as the relay is no longer open and the queue gets clogged ensuring no legit mail gets sent out. Not only that but I am still open to reverseUCE apparently. Can anyone help me with this - I need some hands on advice. FW: exchange 5 relay/spamming
Your point being? I have read almost all I could find on this problem (inc the faq) - this mail list was my last port of call We are running SBS4/exchange 5 sp2 NOT exchange 5.5 The article in the faq and q169683 relate to exch 5.5. I cannot see any routing restrictions tab in the version of each I am running. The article q169683 may help - do I put the # sign in front of the domain I want to re-route (ie under sent to it would look like #mydomain.com inbound? For the time being, I have turned off rerouting but I am still getting ndr in the administrators mailbox, plus all the messages in the queue which is putting a strain on resources and preventing legit mail going out. It would be nice if the problem was read properly rather than just being dismissively told to read the faq. Please don't say upgrade to exch 5.5 because it apparently isn't possible if you are running sbs4.
