Yep. Step 1. Connect to internet. Step 2. Open Outlook offline. Step 3. Click F9 (which initiates my VPN connection) Step 4. Get beer from fridge. Step 5. Order Chinese food for delivery. Step 6. Well, it's certainly improved with every version of Outlook I've used I found it quite tolerable in Outlook 2000 and later using the methodology I described elsewhere in the thread. I also used to teach laptop users who to best use Outlook on the road, so I have rules, sync groups and filters set to minimize my synchronization times when I'm on the road. > From: Alex Alborzfard <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Reply-To: "Exchange Discussions" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Date: Thu, 14 Aug 2003 13:00:27 -0400 > To: "Exchange Discussions" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: RE: Outlook to Exchange over VPN issues > > Ditto here. RE: Outlook to Exchange over VPN issues
You still have to connect to the VPN to synchronize. So yes, it is still as secure :-) The big gain is that users do not notice the performance hit from the VPN because they are running everything in offline mode and just requesting updated information every 10 minutes or whatever. The only info that gets sent across the VPN is new messages, and anything they send. RE: Outlook to Exchange over VPN issues
Just make sure that you know the requirements for RPC/HTTP. 1 Windows 2003 server running the RPC Proxy service (or ISA Server can do it as well)- I don't recall if that can run on the Exchange 2003 server or not, then obviously Exchange 2003. All clients must be Windows XP SP1 plus a hotfix, and Outlook 2003. RE: Outlook to Exchange over VPN issues
Never personally tried it over dial-up, although we have a few users doing that and I've heard no complaints (then again, I am not on the Help Desk). It works fine (Outlook97 & 2k going against Exch5.5 & 2k) over DSL/Cable. There is one annoyance which may account for the port 135 reference - Outlook over VPN does not update the Unread Items counter in a timely fashion. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for incoming mail to register via the counters on the right side of folder names. I recall that there was some UDP port you could open to fix this, but we left things closed. Clicking on any folder would force an Unread Items count update. There is a registry "fix" for the new message notification UDP blockage.
