We had an employee leave a week ago. We disabled his
 account. He came
back today to work for one day. I reenabled his account.

I can access his account via OWA, but when I setup a profile
 for Outlook
and I click on Check Name, I get: The name could not be resolved. The
name could not be matched to a name in the address list.

If I type just part of his name so that I get a list of

Alternate Recp

2001-08-16 Thread Atkinson, Milt
Title: Alternate Recp

I have two Exchange 5.5 SP4 servers in the same site. I am on server A and attempt to send a message, with an attachment, to a user on server B who has an alternate recipient set to his homemail account. I set 'Request a delivery receipt' and send the message. Almost instantaneous, before I can lift my finger off of the mouse button, I get 'The following recipient(s) could not be reached: ... Yada, yada, yada and it lists the homemail account. His mailbox on server B gets the message, but the forwarding outside immediately fails. A couple of seconds later I get the delivery confirmation back from server B.

If I send a message without an attachment, the message gets delivered to both locations without a problem. I have turn off Virus Scan with no change in the results ... Message without attachment goes ... With an attachment will not go.

Anyone have an ideas? ... Thanks in advance ...

I was wondering if someone could assist. I need to share an OST file
amongst about 6 users, however, as far as I'm aware this can't be done by
actually sharing the OST file on a LAN say and having the users access it
from the OL clients. Anyone know of a way around this.

Furthermore, does anyone know if it is possible to hardcode a different
reply address into an OL Exchange (Corp. Admin mode) client (OL2000) using
the SAME SMTP e-mail address for several users. I emphasise the word same
because we can't do this on the Exchange Admin. because users can't have
duplicate e-mail addresses in their mailboxes (unless someone knows of a way
around this).

Any/all suggestions gratefully received. Many thanks.

RE: Email Template

2001-08-16 Thread Mike Keane

Great...thanks. Maybe you can help me with another issue. These same
users want to be able to read the Help Desk mail account as well as their
email in two separate Outlook Windows. I created two profiles and choose
the option of prompting for which profile they would like to use, but when
they try and open the second Outlook Window it deafults to the Profile
they chose on the first Outlook Window. How can I get it to prompt me
everytime?

Thanks,
Mike

You can do this in Outlook by creating the message, and then choosing File,
Save As, and change the message type to .oft. The .oft is the outlook
template. You can either save this .oft file to the network so it's
shareable, or what we do here is insert the template into a recurring task
so whenever we get the pop-up task reminder, the .oft template is included
so we just click on it, send it off, complete the task and keep going. Hope
 this helps.

I posted this earlier, but maybe since there's a couple
helpdesk-type questions on the table I'll repost. This is from Sue
Mosher - Outlook MVP:
MANAGING EXTRA MAILBOXES IN EXCHANGE
From time to time, I want to highlight solutions developers
who really seem to understand what people want from Outlook. One such
developer is Victor Ivanidze, whom I met while I was living in Moscow and
whose web site at http://victori.hypermart.net/
features COM add-ins for Outlook 2000 and 2002, sample forms to add header
fields to Internet messages,
and various other tips.
Lately, Victor has focused on one of the stickier issues in
Outlook in an Exchange environment -- working with a secondary mailbox. As
you probably know, with proper permissions, you can open another mailbox and
see all its folders, respond to messages in its Inbox, etc. A typical
example is a Support mailbox that help desk staffers access in addition to
their own mailboxes.
The hard part comes when you want to ensure that messages
sent from the other mailbox have the right From address and are stored in
the other mailbox's Sent Items folder. I wrote an article a few years ago
(http://www.exchangeadmin.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=4855)
on various ways to meet those goals and concluded that it was easier to
abandon the shared group mailbox approach and use a public folder instead.

Victor has breathed new life into the group mailbox
approach, however, by offering two COM add-ins that together make it
possible to handle a secondary mailbox's messages seamlessly. RightFrom is a
utility that automatically fills in the correct From address when you reply
to or forward a message in the other mailbox. The second utility,
UniSent,
ensures that those replies and forwards are stored in the
Sent Items folder of the other mailbox, not in your own mailbox. It also
puts items that you delete from the group mailbox into the group mailbox's
Deleted Items folder.
Remember that, if you're implementing a group mailbox, there
are two different ways to set permissions to allow other users to send on
behalf of the mailbox. If the Exchange administrator grants Send on Behalf
Of permission to the Support mailbox, outgoing messages will show both the
actual sender and the Support mailbox. If you want to hide the actual
sender's name and address, you need to grant Send As permission to the
user's Windows account.

You're running the same setup I have running here. We
don't have a "helpdesk" per se, so we created a
Helpdesk mailbox that users submit their requests to
either by email or task request. With that, everyone in IT
needs access to this mailbox, so in Exchange, go to the
mailbox permissions tab for the helpdesk account you
want those users to share, give those users permission to that mail account. If the permissions tab isn't
viewable in Exchange, go into Tools, Options,
Permissions and check the box next to 'show
permission page for all objects' -- this is assuming you're running
Exchange 5.0 and up. After permissions have been set,
tell the users to go to their Outlook program,
choose Tools, Go into the properties for their MS Exchange Server Account, go to the Advanced tab, and under 'Open
these additional mailboxes' add the shared user
account, and it will open an additional set of
mailbox folders for this shared account, which is separate from their main Exchange account.

We have Exch 5.5 on one W2K Server, and Exch 2000 on the other. Sometimes,
not always, the two domains are not accessible to each other, despite the
fact that trust has been established between the two domains.

You're running the same setup I have running here. We don't have a
helpdesk per se, so we created a Helpdesk mailbox that users submit their
requests to either by email or task request. With that, everyone in IT
needs access to this mailbox, so in Exchange, go to the mailbox permissions
tab for the helpdesk account you want those users to share, give those users
permission to that mail account. If the permissions tab isn't viewable in
Exchange, go into Tools, Options, Permissions and check the box next to
'show permission page for all objects' -- this is assuming you're running
Exchange 5.0 and up. After permissions have been set, tell the users to go
to their Outlook program, choose Tools, Go into the properties for their MS
Exchange Server Account, go to the Advanced tab, and under 'Open these
additional mailboxes' add the shared user account, and it will open an
additional set of mailbox folders for this shared account, which is separate
from their main Exchange account.

How can I get it to prompt me
everytime?

Thanks,
Mike

You can do this in Outlook by creating the message, and then choosing
File,
Save As, and change the message type to .oft. The .oft is the outlook
template. You can either save this .oft file to the network so it's
shareable, or what we do here is insert the template into a recurring task
so whenever we get the pop-up task reminder, the .oft template is included
so we just click on it, send it off, complete the task and keep going.
Hope
 this helps.

 Hello,
My support department wants to create an email template for emails they
send out routinely. These emails always say the same thing so instead of
re-typing them everyday, they want a template. Is there a way to do this
 in Exchange 5.5 running Outlook.

 Thanks,

RE: Rules w/ e2k, and OXP client Arbitrarily working?

2001-08-16 Thread Angie Sawyer

I had this problem after upgrading to Office XP. The only way I could fix
it was to delete and recreate all of my (client side only) rules. I tried
exporting them and re-importing them - no luck. I tried just recreating the
ones with problems - no luck.

Luckily, I am the only person out of about 10 who have upgraded here and
seen this issue.

I see that occasionally myself with Outlook XP and Exch 5.5 sp4 but only on
the rules based on content. Rules based on the From address always work.
Could it be a timing issue as it searches the text?

is there any pattern to when they work? Are the rules fireing off the

As
long as you have good RPC connectivity between all exchange servers that your

Exchange 2000 IS Backup

2001-08-16 Thread Patrick Rouse

I think I already know the answer to this however I must ask it anyway.

Environment:

Windows 2000 Server - Native
Exchange 2000 - Native (75 users)
Backup Exec 8.6 w/ Exchange 2000 Agent
ProLiant 1600 Dual 550/1GB RAM
OS Logs - 2 x 9.1GB RAID1 (C 8GB for OS, D 1GB for pagefile)
Info Store - 3 x 9.1GB RAID5 (E for IS Files only)

When selecting items to backup with Backup Exec, if I select the Microsoft
Information Store should I deselect the Drive letter that actually holds
these files? I'm assuming that I should still not do individual mailbox
backups, yes?

Thanks.

RE: Accessing Exchange Server over Internet

2001-08-16 Thread Diane Beckham

My
Exchange Server 5.5 SP4 was setup to do this and ever since I had an email flood
on one of my users mailboxes that took my server down and required a call to PSS
which caused me to make changes to my Exchange Server, this can no longer be
done withoutusing VPN (yeah!). HOWEVER, the CEO and the Marketing
VP think that is too much of an "inconvenience" so I have to put it back.
Unfortunately I don'tremember what permissions are needed for
this.
I have
been dragging my feet to do this, but I have no choice. They don't care if
isn't secure. I've been changing permissions slowly but does someone know
exactly which permissions I have to "dumb-down" to get this working again?
Maybe I'll just give those permissions to the CEO and Mkt
VP.

TIA,
Diane

I really like working here, it is just frustrating that they don't see
reality. So I just tighten what I can, and keep fighting.
At least I'm doing my part.

However, I still need ideas on the least amount of permissions needed to
do this. I WILL just give it to those two people unless I'm told to give it

We can force the clue on them. ;o) It's as simple as Martin's
suggestion. Especially, if I download all of their mail to a PST file
and Fed Ex it to them on CD. ;o)

My Exchange Server 5.5 SP4 was setup to do this and ever since I had
an email flood on one of my users mailboxes that took my server down
and required a call to PSS which caused me to make changes to my
Exchange Server, this can no longer be done without using VPN (yeah!).

HOWEVER, the CEO and the Marketing VP think that is too much of an
inconvenience so I have to put it back. Unfortunately I don't
remember what permissions are needed for this. I have been dragging my

feet to do this, but I have no choice. They don't care if isn't
secure. I've been changing permissions slowly but does someone know
exactly which permissions I have to dumb-down to get this working
again? Maybe I'll just give those permissions to the CEO and Mkt
 VP.

I really like working here, it is just frustrating that they don't see
reality. So I just tighten what I can, and keep fighting.
At least I'm doing my part.

However, I still need ideas on the least amount of permissions needed

We can force the clue on them. ;o) It's as simple as Martin's
suggestion. Especially, if I download all of their mail to a PST file
and Fed Ex it to them on CD. ;o)

HOWEVER, the CEO and the Marketing VP think that is too much of an

You're an evil man, Don (hehe). But I'm sure you're not alone in that
aspect. There are at least a few of us that have been thinking along the

So you just send them enough data to get them over the 2gb limit. Then
watch them turn red when they can't get into e-mail and come begging for

RE: Email Template

2001-08-16 Thread Wayne Hanks

simply use one of their normal emails as a form and publish the form in the
organisational forms list. Then when they want to send the form, they
simply choose this form. This way you don't have to fiddle around with Word
as an email editor. You can also set up a button so that it launches a new
message using this form using the command line switches for Outlook.

Hello,
My support department wants to create an email template for emails they
send out routinely. These emails always say the same thing so instead of
re-typing them everyday, they want a template. Is there a way to do this
in Exchange 5.5 running Outlook.

Thanks,

RE: .Exchange IS and IMC stop 10x a day

2001-08-16 Thread Matthew Western

typical microsnot they all do things differently. what we did was
indeed deleting the IMC and recreating it... well not quite, but restarting
the IMC with all the files renamed fixed the problem...

my question is, where can i get this tool that logs into the IMC mailbox and
removes the message? how can one hope that it won't happen again?

last question. when will someone write program that sends mis formed
messages to exchange servers and thus crashes the server??? dorks

anybody want to mail me that IMC tool referred here, pls? thanks

It's not that someone has figured out how to send misformatted messages
so much as sometimes messages just get malformed mail headers that in
turn wind up crashing the IS. The fix PSS gave you is a strange one
though. I can't remember (GAWD, I HATE IT WHEN I CAN'T REMEMBER THINGS)
the tools they gave me to fix the problem off hand, but the fix they
gave you doesn't sound right.
Their utilities they gave me actually allowed me to login to the IMC
like a mailbox and remove the offending message, restart the IS and IMC
and all was well. Took about 5 minutes to fix the problem.
With the fix you got, you might was well have deleted and recreated the
IMC...

Scanmail

2001-08-16 Thread Matt Bullock

Has this posed a problem for anyone, or should I just use the MAPI mode?

Known Exchange AVAPI Issues:

o We recommend installing ScanMail v3.52 on a server that does not have
the IMC (Internet Mail Connector) installed. During testing we found
some issues with outgoing Internet mail messages containing
attachments, which are routed to Exchange for delivery.
