How to configure Exchange for SMTP store and forward
I wish to configure my exchange server to store all incoming mail for a domian and then allow another exchange server to connect and pick up the mail. Could someone point me in the direction of a good resource that will explain how to do it. Also where is the help file for Ex2000, in the System Manager I only get MMC help, and the link to Books Online takes me to the files for Ex5.5 Is this normal? Re: Exchange Tasks in AD
Isn't this the difference between an Exchange Mailbox and a Mail-enabled account? For example, if you were using AD for all staff, but a mix of 50% Exchange and 50% Domino, you'd use the second option for the Domino users. This way the Exchange users would see the Domino users in the GC. Tom Stephen I. Ok..., so how do the settings for Incoming mail size, and the options for Message restrictions work. If the users mail account was in a different system, surely these option would have no meaning. Also, in that case why not just use the option for email address in the general tab? Or is it that this should function as a forwarding method, mail is delivered to address on the E-Mail Addresses tab and then forwarded on to the address on the Exchange General tab. Of course these settings have a meaning. We're basically saying that if a message is destined for (or originates from) the mail-enabled user, then check the message sizes as per the limits. Don't get confused with mailbox storage limits, as a mail-enabled user doesn't have a mailbox. Neil -Original Message- From: Stephen I. RE: Exchange Tasks in AD
Where are you seeing these? They're not in the dialogue box that Exchange Tasks takes you into But the Establish Email Address dialogue box is definitely to create a non-Exchange email addy - it could be, as Neil said, an external address, or it could be, as we use it, for address on a non-Exchange internal system. Of course, in the latter case you also need the relevant Connector set up before it'll work. Tom Stephen I. RE: Exchange Tasks in AD
Ah, but when? This in fact what we're doing - moving from Netware to AD, and from Domino to Exchange 2k. There is an argument that says you do the Directory migration first, so everyone's NDS account is converted to an AD acount all at once. Then you do the Domino to E2k migration over a timescale. During that migration some users would be on E2k, some would still be on Domino, but all would have an AD account. The Domino users would be mail-enabled, and one task during the migration would be to create their Exchange mailbox. RE: Exchange Tasks in AD
Sorry about this, I appear to have missed the point somewhere, but I think I have it now. For this assume that I have only one exchange server on site. So a mail-enabled account is really just an forwarding address that gets added to the exchange address list. Also the limits are for messages originating from the exchange server (i.e. from a OL client) which are then forwarded onto the address specified on the 'Exchange General' tab of the user properites in the AD. My final question is in regards to this... The exchange help file says 'If an account is mail-enabled but not mailbox-enabled, users can only send mail. Mailbox-enabled users can also receive mail and have additional settings to configure.' Seeing how a mail enabled user has no mailbox. How does it manage to send. I am assuming that this statement means via the exchange sever and not via a third party such as hotmail. Thanks for all the advice Stephen -Original Message- From: Neil Hobson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 04 September 2001 11:42 To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Exchange Tasks in AD Of course these settings have a meaning. RE: How to configure Exchange for SMTP store and forward
Ah, finally the help file, all a lot clearer now, should have thought to look for chm files myself, thanks. About the Store for later pickup thing. I have two exchange servers, in two completely seperate Win2K forests. The share nothing except that they are owned by the same people. The primary exchange server has a good internet connection and is online 24/7. The secondary system has patchy internet access that makes it unsutible to be a SMTP host without some sort of buffer in front of it. What I would like to do is have all the mail for the secondary domain delivered to the primary server that would store it. When the secondary host gets online, it conects to the primary and that forwards all the stored mail to the secondary. I know I could pay a third party to do this, but I already have the exchange2000 servers deployed and would like to use them. The is also the option of the secondary system conecting to the primary over a VPN if that opens up any other options. Any ideas, Thanks a lot, Stephen -Original Message- From: Lefkovics, William [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 04 September 2001 11:41 To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: How to configure Exchange for SMTP store and forward 1) Store all incoming mail for later pickup? Still got the problem with Exchange Sp4 and post
Title: Still got the problem with Exchange Sp4 and post Hello all, Still remember me? I installed a new imc with sp4 and a post sp4 for MTA problems I had. Thought this would fix my IMC problem. But no. On monday some hot shots called me as mail that was send over the weekend still hadn't arrived. So I had a look at the new server. It was having the same symptoms like the old one. Mail get's accepted by the imc but keeps sitting in the 'Inbound waiting for Conversion'. It never comes out only after a reboot. (Stopping the service and starting will also not work). So when the migration is underway, you un-mail enable the account and then mailbox-enable it. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2001 6:05 AM Subject: RE: Exchange Tasks in AD Ah, but when? This in fact what we're doing - moving from Netware to AD, and from Domino to Exchange 2k. There is an argument that says you do the Directory migration first, so everyone's NDS account is converted to an AD acount all at once. Then you do the Domino to E2k migration over a timescale. During that migration some users would be on E2k, some would still be on Domino, but all would have an AD account. The Domino users would be mail-enabled, and one task during the migration would be to create their Exchange mailbox. RE: Backing up Exchange with Veritas Backup Exec 8.x Yeah. You need to be listed as a user on the mailbox (on the permissions tab). I don't remember if you need to create a separate profile, but I think you do (although it can't hurt to try adding the mailbox to your profile - if you do, let us know what happens so I'll remember next time). Do you have the registry key to update permissions changed? If you don't know what I'm talking about search TechNet with the oh-so-obvious (not) keywords of registry 120 (no quotes). You can change the value to 1 and not harm anything... RE: isinteg tests
When you run ISINTEG -FIX against a database, the following happens: 1. The databases have pointers to the information in the database, such as mail messages, folders, etc. Running isinteg -fix removes pointers that point to information that is no longer there (usually this is pointers to information that was removed by Eseutil /d or /p). 2. Corrects higher level cosmetic problems with the database such as message store limits, storage time limits on public folders, message size limits, etc. 3. Checks (at a higher level) the integrity of the database's folders, tables, messages, etc. and attempts to correct problems that are found (pointers to non-existing info is one of these tests, but there are others). -Original Message- From: Richardson, Kendall (UNISYS) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2001 9:57 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: isinteg tests Greetings. I have Exchange 55, SP3 running on NT4, 6a. Over the weekend I ran eseutil to clean up 3.5GB of free/white space in the info store after moving lots of email around for users. I also ran isinteg in test mode just to see what information it provides (I had never used it before). Test results returned some warnings, but I am not sure what to do with that information. Test 9 of 21, message, returned 76 warnings, test 10 attachment returned 10 warnings, test 20 reference count verification returned 99 warnings. Is my info store about to blow up, or are these warnings fairly benign? Where can I get some detailed information on isinteg and what each of the 21 tests do, plus corrective actions that I can take to fix the problems. (I didn't want to use the -fix switch on isinteg without knowing what the problem was, or what the fix might do). They usually support the current and last release. They'll even do a best effort on prior versions, but without the guarantees. Normally, when you add/remove an account on the Permissions tab, it can take up to 2 hours for the change to update. You can do this. Forward unresolved recipients to the other organization's server. - Original Message - From: Stephen I. The is also the option of the secondary system conecting to the primary over a VPN if that opens up any other options. public folder DL subscription
It was mentioned that it could be done on this list a while back, but I am not sure how. I want to create a public folder, and subscribe that public folder to a discussion list, such as this one, instead of everyone who wants to belong to this list, get the email, thus created duplicate emails among several mailboxes. How can this be done? I am guessing I need to create another user/email address that will be used to receive all these? That correct? And then how to actually subscribe that public folder with the new email, or whatever. Thanks, Paul _ Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (www.grisoft.com). RE: Restrict GAL
And my reply was stupid. Matt, Address Book Views are an effective way to restrict GAL access. We have 2 separate businesses running in a single Exchange site. Address Book Views works effectively to make it seem that the companies have their own server in a sense. I'm not sure what was funny. -Original Message- From: Larry Penrod [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2001 12:29 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Restrict GAL Oh my god, that was funny! -Original Message- From: Matt Bullock [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2001 1:50 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Restrict GAL Was looking for a way to restrict individual users from seeing the GAL in Exchange 5.5 SP4 without having to go through something like this: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q182/9/02.ASP Matt Bullock List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm

RE: OWA login problem
I had that issue with one user also. Only way I fixed it was to recreate his email account and start over. If you do this, don't forget to export the mailbox to a pst before blowing away the mailbox :-) Diane -Original Message- From: Richardson, Kendall (UNISYS) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2001 12:25 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: OWA login problem Exchange 5.5 w/SP3 on all Nt4, SP6a network. I have OWA setup and works fine for all users (except one). This user gets error message saying failed to connect to Microsoft exchange server when she enters user ID and password (after entering alias at first OWA window). We get this error regardless of which work station we use, so it isn't workstation related. User can open mail normally using outlook via our LAN. She is just a normal user; only group membership is domain users. We tried being very specific with the alias at first OWA window-input her entire SMTP email address-didn't help. OWA troubleshooting info only talks about checking permissions on the OWA server for this specific error message; since all other users work fine I don't see why it would be a permissions issue on the server. Ay ideas would be appreciated.
