Internet Mail Connector - HELP

2002-01-23 Thread Jason Mullins

We have run exchange 5.5 for a while on a NT 4.0 box, but we have not used
it for internet email. What do I need to do to put our exchange server on
the internet? I have ran through the setup of adding the Internet Mail
Connector many times in a lab setting. Our ISP said that can start routing
it to us (instead of them) and they said we could use mail.company.com. My
question is where do I put that? Do we use mail as the hostname and
company.com as the domain in the DNS settings within TCP/IP? Any other
installation suggestions or standard settings that we should use would be
great. Thanks!

RE: Internet Mail Connector - HELP

2002-01-23 Thread Clark, Steve

They handle the DNS settings on your behalf. If you want the SMTP mail to be
sent to you, punch a hole in your firewall and assign it an external static
address mapped to the Exchange SMTP service location (your Exchange server).
Provide that IP address to your ISP and they will start funneling the SMTP
mail to you.

But, your not done - there are relay items as well as configuration issues
that you want to look at - I have several links off my website to Exchange
FAQ's that walk you through step by step (www.clarksupport.com).

Enjoy!

Hi Gang,
I'm looking for a solid/good Exchange Solution for SPAM blocking. Also any
WEB sites you would use to find such products would be good. If this body's
opinion is that I should go to a LINUX based solution, like SPAM assassin, I
will.. but I'm trying to stick with a single product solution.

Exchange re-org

2002-01-23 Thread MBrownell

I am in need of references that explain adding a new Ex server and moving
the users, connectors etc from the bridgehead server to it, then retiring
the bridgehead server. We are running 5.5SP4 on NT4 SP5 in an NT4 Domain.
New Server will be EX 5.5 SP4 on W2K SP2 in the same NT4 domain. I have been
to Slipstick and thence MS TechNet already, I just wanted to know of any
other resources I should be looking at.

Thanks!

be able to set up a rule on the PF to do what you want. Or you can use

It seems that you have Personal Folders since your manager can't find his
email. You should probably look at using the other delivery method since
your mail stays on the server. Think of backup issues etc...You might want
to look at offline folders for remote users.
For now, what you will have to do is copy the outlook.pst file to the
manager's laptop and have him to an import.

Outlook message icons not changing

2002-01-23 Thread Crosby, Tim (Sarcom)

All right, I know this one is kinda off the wall, but it is happening to the
CIO so I guess I have to solve it

When you reply or forward messages, the icon for that message usually
changes from an open envelope to an open envelope with a forward or backward
arrow on it indicating you have responded. His Outlook client has stopped
showing the arrows when he responds. We have tried recreating his profile,
reinstalling Outlook 98 and even upgrading to Outlook 2000. The server is
5.5, SP4.

Anyone care to venture a guess on this one?

Anyone care to venture a guess on this one?

It also happens when the email was Bcc'ed to someone. The Bcc recipients

I have a case where User JSmith received an email in her inbox that was
addressed in the TO: field to KJones. When I clicked on the TO: field the
smtp address was user's JSmith's ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). I tracked messages
for JSmith and KJones and the log said the message was only for JSmith.
This was unsolicited email. The ceo wants an explanation of how this could
happen. In a fuzzy way, I think I know but can someone give me a good
explanation I can use.

Thanks for your help

Forwarding messages via X.400 connector

2002-01-23 Thread Mitrik, Peter
Title: Forwarding messages via X.400 connector

Hi guys,
Tonight I have experienced strange issue. I have theory what happened but I would like to hear your opinion.
We have user's survey on internal web page which will generate html message with answers and send it to one of our users. This user had 5 of those messages (HTML) and he tried to forward them as one message (RTF) another to another user. (Actually, he selected 5 html messages, right-clicked on them and he chosen Forward Items). The second user is on another server in another site in another country. We are connection with this site by X.400 connector. Our user sent message and afterwards he got non-delivery message from our bridge server. You can see it below. (Sorry, I had to change the names in X.400 address).

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

 Subject: MESSAGE
 Sent: 1/23/2002 4:32 PM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

Surname, Name on 1/23/2002 4:32 PM
A syntax error was detected in the content of the message
The MTS-ID of the original message is: c=SITE;a=CONNECTIONS;p=COMPANY;l=HOMESERVER-020123213211Z-2772
 MSEXCH:MSExchangeMTA:SITE:BRIDGESERVER

I have theory that X.400 bridge server was trying convert message to correct X.400 format. Converting was not possible because of errors in html code inside of wrapped messages so bridge server sent it back as non-deliverable.

It must be something wrong with bridge server because the home server (server where the mailbox is actually located) sent this message fine. I tried to send this same message to another user in our site and message was delivered fine.

I can say that message was 80 kB in size - our X.400 limit is much higher.
We were able to send a regular message to user in another country with no problems.
Any idea?

On the

from us (for antivirus scanning purposes).

All right, I know this one is kinda off the wall, but it is happening to

When you reply or forward messages, the icon for that message usually
changes from an open envelope to an open envelope with a forward or

recreating his profile, reinstalling Outlook 98 and even upgrading to

Changing
the "SA" account isn't so bad. Just follow the KB
article.
Moving the
NT Server, IMHO won't be so bad either.

Depending
on the number of users...break out your csv editor and whack the ntaccount
section.

If you
aren't trying to maintain the edb's, why not just rebuild it? Might be
faster, depending on the hardware.

Outlook/Exchange

2002-01-23 Thread Shamika Fehr

We have a developer who had written a program that runs in UNIX (Of which I
know nothing about) to monitor specific things on our imaging system and
page one of us fortunate systems folks for specific errors on the system. He
also wants to provide us with a way to send an e-mailed response to a
designated mail account if the problem does not require immediate response,
but service can be delayed. His program would search the mail for key text
or specific characters that would tell it wether or not to escalate the
issue or put it aside. Is there a way to do this directly from the mail
server? Also - another alternative I guess, would be to install the Outlook
client on a machine and set up a rule to save these messages to a text file
that his program could search. I didn't see any rules in Outlook 2000 that
would enable us to do that. Does Microsoft provide a way to customize your
own rules? We are running Exchange 5.5, SP4 on an NT4, SP6a system. Thanks.

RE: Questions about Outlook.

2002-01-23 Thread Wayne Hanks

That's the problem. With older versions of Outlook pre 2000 you can only
create distribution lists in either the GAL using the exchange admin utility
or in the Personal Address Book. The problem is that list in the GAL is a
pain to administer ( this user expects to be able to do things by himself)
and the pab list cannot be shared. I expect with Outlook 2000 it is
possible to create the DL in this PF and give it permissions as you have
stated.

Hi gurus,
I have the following setup and need to resolve the situation if possible.
Exchange server is NT4 sp6, Exch 5.5 sp3
client is Outlook 98
I have a user who has setup a contacts folder in a public folder and would
like to create a distribution list in this folder that can be accessed by
the staff in his group. I have found a couple of ways of doing this. The
first is to install Outlook 2000 ( I believe the CAL for Exchange allows
this) which apparently can create a distribution list in any contacts folder
( http://www.slipstick.com/contacts/dl.htm
http://www.slipstick.com/contacts/dl.htm ). I would need to get hold of
the media or the install for this so I don't know if this is an option.

The second option also comes from the slipstick.com site and is a utility
called contlist.exe which allows you to create contact lists in any contacts
folder (including public folders) for OL98. The problem I have here is that
the file provided is only a 30 day demo and the company that supported it (
Simplecomputing.net) is no longer around. Can anyone tell me where I can
contact the author (Stephen P. Johnson formerly of Simple Computing LLC) of
this program to try and organise a license for this program as this is the
simplest solution for me.
