Btw,

You need to install a separate file from nai's site.
It scans through all tickets and assigns the user id etc to it. This
is because of issues with the new antivirus API in exchange.
Hope this helps

After installing Groupshield 4.5 on my Exchange server 5.5
SP4, it detects viruses just fine (thank god for that) but I'm unable to see
who sent the infected mail or who the recipient was. As administrator I
receive a mail from Groupshield (the ticket) but To, From, Sent and Subject
are always empty (in the body of the ticket I mean). Furthermore I receive
the alert as a plain mail whereas with Groupshield 4.0.3 it had it's own

Any clues?

Title: RE: Messages going to the wrong users

OK - some more info then.
What version of Exchange are you running?

Was the sender on your mail system or a different one?

What is in the message header?

Do you have any 3rd party apps with access to your Exchange servers?

Does the user have any permissions or delegate access setup on his inbox?

Does it happen every time the user receives an e-mail from anyone, from only that sender, or just the one time?

Did you check the sent items for your user to make sure the mail was not forwarded?

Thank God our logs were stored on the D:/ drive and MS helped us reinstall Exchange2000 to our specs and copy the logs back overtook about 5 hours and all for less than 300 bucks...what a deal! RE: Moving mailboxes to another server

2002-02-08 Thread Brien Mayer

WE have set backups up on the laptops. But you know when you leave it up to the user
they don't have the time to wait. So what we have done is asked them to copy their
.pst file to a zip disk or when they are in the office to copy it to a share on the
server. This works great because OWA loads fast if you keep the information store
small. Take it from me your helpdesk calls will increase with laptop users calling
saying that they can't load OWA. Keep their exchange box small let they pst grow. If
they come in the office every now then you can set the outlook desktop client up to
sync so even if they are on the road they can access their old mail. This is just a
nut shell of what I have done with exchange remote users. I also included the Norton
mobile client so there anti virus will be updated through e-mail. It go's on on.

I had the same problem. Instead of moving the users pst file to the
exchange server, I imported them back into outlook let the pst file
remain local on the pc. This solved several issues. 1) It kept the
information store(users mailbox) small which in turn helps load outlook
web faster. (If you import the users .pst file they are large .pst
files it will take forever for the web client to load when they are on
the road) 2) It gave our users a chance to keep all their old mail
move the mail they wanted needed to view on the web to folders in the
information store still have the web load fast.

Quick overview:
We have one domain controller and two member servers in the Forest; all
are running Server 2000 with Service pack 2 and latest security patches.
The Exchange Server has Norton 3.0 Anti Virus filters for the Exchange;
we are using Norton Corporate Edition 7.6 over the entire network, with
the client installed on all workstations. We have a 768 kbps DSL line
with a Linksys BEFVPN41 router plugged directly into our 24 port switch.
I setup DHCP on one of the servers due to having to disable the router's
DHCP in order to do the necessary port forwarding for the Exchange Mail
and Outlook Web Access ports on the Exchange Server.

Question:
We would like to move all data from Personal Folders in Outlook 2000
to the Exchange user mail boxes enabling their inbox, contacts,
calendar, to be visible on the OWA page. That brings up the issue of
drive storage space; is it possible to move the mail box/Pub stores over
to one of the network drives on our storage server without
reinstallation?

TIA,
Chris

RE: Moving mailboxes to another server

2002-02-08 Thread Brien Mayer

OK here it is in a nut shell!!
1) I have set up a GPO that specifies the users can't browse my network (no computers
near me no entire network) This worked great. I tested this in no way was the user
able to browse my network for computers or users.

2)In the same GPO I also specified that the users My Documents are to be redirected to
a HIDDEN share on a server.
3) WE merged from SendMail to Exchange. Now they can browse the network through
outlook. Heres how how can I prevent this

open outlook go to VIEW select Outlook Bar Folder List.

On the Outlook Bar (Outlook shortcuts) click the Other short cuts tab.

I see a folder with my logon name. If you do to click on it.

This shows all of your MY Documents.

Now look at the Folder List scroll up down. I see all my users all computers on my
network.

Why is this how can I prevent this?

 2. They're less stable than the Exchange Information Store have a

 3. User deletes PST from hard drive or computer is stolen and mail is

 4. Information unavailable from OWA, or any computer that the PST is

You can move the Information Stores to a NAS or SAN device, but I
don't think you can just put it on another network accessable file

Why how what can be done

Subject: Antigen filter *.*.* - worthwhile?

We run Antigen 6.2 on our Exchange 5.5 server. We were advised by Sybari
support to include the filter, *.*.*, which they said are often viruses
(e.g. annakournikova.jpg.vbs). We tried it for a while, but were
quarantining too many valid user attachments, and they rebelled, so I
compromised and removed that filter. We are filtering exe, bat, cmd, com,
vbs, vb, js, shs, lnk, pif, scr, hta, htm, and *.*} (whatever that is).
Also we are using three AV engines, and updating them frequently. As I
understand it, the *.*.* filter would only come into play on a new virus
for which we don't yet have the signature, and is some other scripting
language that we are not filtering.

I'd like to get feedback on the protection compromise of not filtering
*.*.* attachments.

How many of you are using that filter?

Do you think it adds significant protection?

Have we missed any valuable filters?

TIA

RE: Messages going to the wrong users

2002-02-08 Thread John Matteson

Did the message originate outside the Exchange org? If so, how do you know
that it wasn't BCC'd to the user? BCC won't show up in the headers, AFAIK.

Does the incorrect recipient have a name close to the people that were
supposed to get it?

If the originator of the message was in Exchange, was the user on line or
off line at the time (the OAB could be hosed on the user's workstation)?

Subject: Messages going to the wrong users

Hi All,

We have had the situation recently were a user has received email that was
not addressed to him, CC'd or BCC'd. The user it was intended for got the
message no problem, but it also went to the other user as well. This is
quite a worrying thing, is there anything that could cause this and does
anyone have any ideas how I could prevent it from happening again.

Many Thanks

Jez

Unfortunately my company was recently purchased by another who is 100%
Lotus Notes. They plan to make all US sites in the organization to have
the same email domain name, ie [EMAIL PROTECTED]
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] . There will be a central server that
accepts and forwards to the other location sites own Domino servers via
encrypted VPN tunnels. They have informed us that my companies' three
sites must convert from Exchange to the Lotus Domino servers to fit into
their structure. I would like to keep my current Exchange server and
use it to receive and send to the central Domino server (for cost
reasons and the fact I know zero about the Lotus product). I am just
getting started on some reading on the Lotus connector for Exchange and
synchronizing the two servers. So far it looks possible to connect for
mail transfer and synchronize address books. My question is has anyone
out there tried this? Please help keep an Exchange admin from learning
 Lotus.

I just did this on an XP Pro machine with my GPO that doesn't let people
browse the network they still can't. Let me check my GPO exact settings
for you.

OK here it is in a nut shell!!
 1) I have set up a GPO that specifies the users can't browse my network =
(no computers near me no entire network) This worked great. I tested =
this in no way was the user able to browse my network for computers or =
 users.

2)In the same GPO I also specified that the users My Documents are to be =
redirected to a HIDDEN share on a server.
 3) WE merged from SendMail to Exchange. Now they can browse the network =
through outlook. Heres how how can I prevent this

open outlook go to VIEW select Outlook Bar Folder List.

On the Outlook Bar (Outlook shortcuts) click the Other short cuts tab.

I see a folder with my logon name. If you do to click on it.=20

This shows all of your MY Documents.

Now look at the Folder List scroll up down. I see all my users all =
 computers on my network.=20

Why is this how can I prevent this?

RE: repair mailbox

2002-02-08 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

One other thing that you may want to consider is that you are going to have
to wait until your Directory has synchronized before you can add his mailbox
back in. Conversely, you can also follow Q179065 and adjust that value in
the registry. Forcing a directory update also won't hurt.

Also, you have to be careful with Exmerge (not careful meaning you will mess
up the file). Exmerge depends on the directory name to be successful. For
the export, it doesn't matter - it creates the pst file with the format of
directoryname.pst. However, in order to import successfully, the new
directory name must either match exactly the old directory name (on the new
mailbox I mean), OR, you can just rename the .pst file to match the new
directory name. Either way should work fine.

As a last comment, if you are at all unsure about what you are doing, it
might be wise to call PSS (Microsoft Product Support Services). It costs
$245, but they will be able to step you through the process and remove any
doubts about what you are doing. Heck, they may even have a solution that
doesn't require you to do this. Up to you.

We use Retrospect by Danz...system wide. Our problem was that it didn't
really backup the system state because our backup server at this location is
a Mac

Besides that, the software is great. There is a little program you can use
to backup the system state and then restore is fine. Have experienced

Hope this helps...

When I use a laptop and dial out to an ISP and send to the same user they
get the message.

They even get the message if from the outside a/c I send the mail to their

It only looks like only mail that we try to send internally to these users

I am really baffled

RE: Doing test restore with transaction logs...

2002-02-08 Thread Mike Zatkalik

We are using BE 8.5, and looking in to moving to BE8.6 to be able to backup
to a file, for added recovery possibilities. We have done restores numerous
times, and everything goes smoothly, but we haven't tried the restoring
using just the logs. Working on seeing if I can replay a couple of days of
mail, on a week old full backup, to see what happens. :) Will let you guys
know if this actually works, or just causes problems.

We use Retrospect by Danz...system wide. Our problem was that it didn't
really backup the system state because our backup server at this location is

a Mac

Besides that, the software is great. There is a little program you can use
to backup the system state and then restore is fine. Have experienced
another restore with AD server since we discovered this minor flaw with NO
hitches.

Hope this helps...

RE: Forwarded Mail to POP3 A/C Bouncing - Getting desperate

2002-02-08 Thread Brien Mayer

Hope this helps. This is what Microsoft said that error meant.

There is no route for the given address space, for example, an SMTP connector is
configured, but this address does not match.

DNS returned an authoritative host that was not found for the domain.

The routing group does not have a connector defined; mail from one server in one
routing group does not have a route to another routing group.

An SMTP Protocol error occurred.

this user in the table and what are they being aliased as? You may have

Auto-Forward to Alternative Recipient Not working

2002-02-08 Thread Dimitri Limanovski

Well, not 100%.
I have a bunch of users that have email accounts on our systems but all
their mail is being automatically forwarded to their other Internet
accounts.
I have their Internet accounts setup as Alternate Recipient and Deliver
messages both to recipient and alternate recipient is NOT SELECTED so all
messages that come into that mailbox get automatically forwarded to the
Internet address specified in Alternate Recipient field and nothing gets
accumulated in the Inbox.
Well, messages do get forwarded without any problems but copies of these
messages are still sitting in the Inbox. I can't figure out why..
Unchecking Deliver messages both to recipient and alternate recipient is
the right thing to do when I only want the Alternate Recipient to get mail
and not the local mailbox, right? Am I missing something?

Thanks!

P.S. Exchange5.5 SP4 + all hot fixes on WinNT4 SP6a + all hot fixes; OWA on
the separate server, if it makes any difference.

Moving an Exchange server

2002-02-08 Thread Roger Hanna

I have a complicated situation. We had a server with exchange on it die,
so we brought exchange on another one. Since it was working we left it
that way (with exchange on both) and looked at buying a new server to out
exchange on. We have done so and now will move all of exchange onto our
new server. Here is what I am going to do:

 1. Move mailboxes to new server.
 2. Re home public folders
 3. Test by bringing down both of the existing servers.
 4. Uninstall exchange on first one and then the other server. That will
leave only the one (new and running W2K with Ex5.5; old ones were running
NT w/ 5.5). What else do I need to do?

 need to do?

Moving an Exchange serverI have a complicated situation.
We had a server with exchange on it die, so we
brought exchange on another one. Since it was
working we left it that way (with exchange on
both) and looked at buying a new server to out exchange on. We have done so and now will move all of exchange onto our
new server. Here is what I am going to do:
1. Move mailboxes to
new server. 2. Re home public
folders 3. Test by bringing down both of
the existing servers. 4. Uninstall exchange
on first one and then the other server. That will
leave only the one (new and running W2K with
Ex5.5; old ones were running NT w/ 5.5). What else do I need to do? -Roger Hanna [EMAIL PROTECTED]
