Also check the archives there are loads of threads on why BLB are really BAD.

Addendum to below.

Institute a Deleted Item retention timeframe(we use 31 days). If an item
needs to be restored, it can be brought back from the Dumpster within that
timeframe.

See Appendix B at http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm for full
information.

Online backup using Microsoft documented APIs. Restore of individual
mailboxes are not done... you reload the Information Store(s), prefereably
to a recovery server, then EXMERGE or connect via a MAPI client and export
just the info needed. Also, reduced backup window, flushing of transaction
logs (no need to use circular logging, which means that in the event of a DR
situation, you can replay the logs up to the point of failure, if the logs
are available).

Easy to say. But it won't happen here, so I need to fix this. Any other

Hi. Using Exchange 5.5 SP4, on NT 4 SP6a, all Exchange patches applied.
I use BackupExec 8.5 as a backup program, and use it's Exchange Agent to
backup my Ex 5.5. I've started getting the following message during the
backup log:

Media Name: Media created 4/23/2002 05:45:27 PM
Backup of \\EXCHANGE\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes
Backup set #5 on storage media #1
Backup set description: DailyBackupJob
Backup Type: NORMAL - Back Up Files - Reset Archive Bit
Backup started on 4/23/2002 at 6:17:40 PM.
Directory ?Employee name [Employee Alias]?Reminders was not found, or
could not be accessed.
None of the files or subdirectories contained within will be backed up.
^ ^ ^ ^ ^
Unable to open the item Employee Name [Employee Alias]?Reminders? -
skipped.
(obviously, I've removed the employee's real name from the message).
All else seems fine with this employee; he's a Outlook 2K user, and he does
get reminders for tasks and calendar (I've verified that). He notices no
unusual errors or messages from Outlook. And the backup program is getting
all the other mailboxes (Backed up 69804 mail message(s) in 1213 folder(s)
in 57 mailbox(es). 1 item was skipped.). Haven't found anything in the
KnowledgeBase that seems to apply.

Thoughts, anyone?

GroupShield 5.20 on Exchange 2000

2002-04-26 Thread Papageorgakis Nikos

Hello everybody,

We have an exchange 2000 cluster (active/active) and we have problem with
GroupShield version 5.20. When we installed the GS we zeroed priv1.edb
from the one node (priv1.edb done 0 kb). After a week we tried to change
the configuration and at the time we tried to save it we saw a message
that the application was unable to write to disk. We restarted the console
and we confirmed that all changes had been saved. We did the same exactly
actions and for the other node and we saw the same message about the disk.
We noticed a delay during the opening of a mailbox resided on node 2 and
at the same time on Cluster Administrator we notice that except quorum,
disk K and disk L had moved to node1. Notice that up to this moment all
resources were under node 2 control. So we decide to move quorum disk to
node1 and shutdown node2.
After the reboot of node1 we see the following extraordinary status:
Node 2 resources started successfully except GroupShield.
Node 1 couldn’t start because disk K was offline and from disk
administrator we couldn’t see also the local disk.
The final step was to delete the GroupShield resources, restart the node 1
and all resources started successfully.

Any ideas?

Windows 2000 SP2
Exchange 2000 SP2
GroupShield 5.20.689

Folks,

I keep getting the message MS Exchange Server Not available when I try to
connect to an exchange server account with a laptop using dialup networking.
Can't find any helpful fix in any of MS's knowledgebases. Any ideas,

Thanks

RE: MS Exchange Server Not Available during DUN

The question is lacking in details. How are you authenticating? Is your
dial-up authentication also authenticating you into the domain? If not have
you set your Outlook profile to prompt you for authentication when you
connect to Exchange? Assuming you are actually connected and TCP/IP is good
(can you ping the Exchange server?) then this is your next place to look.

Yes to all the questions. I connect and authenticate to the network domain

thelaptop is running Win2K Advanced server even though I don't see why this

Terminal Services Outlook, faster, fully functional...

 Hello All,

I have a couple of questions about OWA.

 1) When will spell check be available?

 2) Is there a way to create a rule on the server side to block certain
people from sending mail to my users. ie. spam and other mail to be
 blocked.

 3) How does one create a signature in owa?

 4) In present our present use of Outlook, if you type the name of the
person you are sending email to, their email address pops up in the To
 box. Possible in web version?

TIA, any information is greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to see who removed a user from a distribution list? I

I'm not sure what Category or Event to look for in EVENTVWR that would tell
me who is modifying the

Thanks!

RE: MS Exchange Server Not Available during DUN

2002-04-26 Thread Carol Fee

I believe Exchange only uses Netbios (WINS) name resolution. You can try
adding an entry for the Exchange server in your lmhosts file, however I have
never had any luck using that over a RAS/VPN connection. Remember the
lmhosts file only loads at boot up, so reboot before you try again. Are you
using Windows 2000 for your RAS server. If so, on the RAS server do you
have Enable IP Routing selected on the IP tab of the Properties for the
server in Win2K Routing and Remote Access. This is required in order for
RAS/VPN clients to get WINS and DNS servers from the DHCP server on the
network.
Also, try this after making the DUN connection and authenticating to the
domain. From a command prompt:
\\net use \\%ExchangeServerNetbiosName%\ipc$ user:domain name\username

Then try to open Outlook.

The question is lacking in details. How are you authenticating? Is your
dial-up authentication also authenticating you into the domain? If not have
you set your Outlook profile to prompt you for authentication when you
connect to Exchange? Assuming you are actually connected and TCP/IP is good

RE: MS Exchange Server Not Available during DUN

2002-04-26 Thread Ely, Don

First of all, that is only for Exchange 5.5. Second, obviously you don't
have to reboot your computer after adding host file entries. NBBTSTAT is a
wonderful too. Third of all, I've rarely if ever had RAS problems like
either Frank or yourself, so maybe y'all should check out your network
functionality (e.g. WINS) and wonder what's wrong with it.

Multiple addresses

2002-04-26 Thread Dahl, Peter
Title: Multiple addresses

The question yesterday about multiple SMTP addresses prompted a familiar answer from the list, but I have never seen it work as stated.

The reply was and always seems to be, select the from field and type the address as you would like it to be sent out. With every Exchange server I have worked with, once you type any secondary address in, that address is resolved to the name from the GAL and reset to use the primary SMTP address as associated with that account.

Is there something I am missing here?

The question yesterday about multiple SMTP

  work as stated.
The reply was and always seems to be, select the
from field and type the address as you would like it to be sent out.
With every Exchange server I have worked with, once you type any secondary
address in, that address is resolved to the name from the GAL and reset to use
the primary SMTP address as associated with that account.

Holidays not showing up (OL98)

2002-04-26 Thread McCready, Robert

I have a test account. I deleted the mailbox and recreated another one to
start fresh.
I added the United States Holidays. However, when I added them, I received
an error
message stating that the holidays are already installed. I selected YES
to
reinstall them (which I assume could have caused duplicates), but the
holidays
still are not visible. If I highlight the Calendar, and then select VIEW -
CURRENT
VIEW - EVENTS, there is nothing in the LOCATION column. I believe this
column should say UNITED STATES. Has anybody else ran into a
similar situation?

Exchange 5.5 SP4, NT 4.0 SP6.

Thanks.

This is required in order for
RAS/VPN clients to get WINS and DNS servers from the DHCP server on the
network. Also, try this after making the DUN connection and authenticating
to the domain. From a command prompt: \\net use
\\%ExchangeServerNetbiosName%\ipc$ user:domain name\username

Then try to open Outlook.

Yes to all the questions. I connect and authenticate to the network domain
before launching Outlook, can ping the very Exchange Server I cannot connect
to, Offline folder is set, I cannot think of any reason. May I add that
thelaptop is running Win2K Advanced server even though I don't see why this
should matter.

Excahnge 2000 Outlook web Access Inbox does not load (Q315515)

2002-04-26 Thread Raghu KASTURY

When I try to login to OWA, the right pane of the inbox shows loading...
but does not show messages. Other folders seem to be working fine. The
microsoft knowledge base Q315515 suggets to add atleast one language in IE
options general language. These settings are already there.

The inbox shows up correctly when we access OWA using the ISP other than
the one who is providing us the web address and redirecting the MX pointer
to our server.

Can any one help us what could be the reason. Is this a problem with the
ISP's settings?

Could somebody give some insight to why RoutingRestrictions for R ELAYING in Exchange 5.5 isn't working correctly

software (GoldMine).
Now we've been
knowingly relaying email, which I am trying to bring to an
end.
From what I can
gather the quickest way to do this would be to go into the IMS properties under
Routing, then to
Routing
Restrictions. From there I enter all the valid IP's .2 - .254 (even the Goldmine
Server) and check the box
Hosts and Clients
with these IP addressesthenStop and Restart
Exchange.
Nowany
GoldMine users that try to use Goldmine Email to send mail get the error message
that they cannot due
to the fact that the
server will not allow relaying. This confuses me, I'm not sure wether I've done
something wrong
or this is something
that SP4 will resolve. I cant seem to find anything in the list of SP4 bug fixes
regarding this
specific issue.

Only other
optionsare to stop using GoldMine Email all together, untill I can get
another mail server up to
specifically use for
GoldMine.
Any comments or
suggestion would be appreciated.

Title: RE: "Reminders" not found on 1 mailbox during BackupExec backup

Either
import into the production server or load the PST file directly into Outlook and
only restore what is needed.

As for
the hardware and software, it's only really necessary if you are going with a
dedicated recovery server. We've used as a recovery server a
workstation class machine with a SCSI card to attach to the backup
device. We decomm the thing immediately after use, and you MIGHT be
able to use an NFR license, since the recovery server wouldn't need to be a
production machine.

Mailbox size limits

2002-04-26 Thread Jon Farr

I'm curious what other businesses are using for mailbox size limits. We
have a user at one client who keeps insisting that 90Mb isn't enough
(we've already made exceptions to get her to that point). I'd like to
have some comparisons to show her that 90Mb is ridiculous. For 95% of the
users, we use the defaults from Exchange (45/60/80), which still seems
large to me. Then there are the few packrats who won't delete an email.
Ever.

charging resource costs back to departments -- that would solve so many
issues (ridiculously large mailboxes, off-hour support call-outs for idiotic

I
don't use quotas either.not by my choice but because mgmt. won't let
me. I do however, use Mailbox Manager which runs every weekend and deletes
anything older than 45 days. Right now the largest mailbox I have is just
over 200MB, at one time however, I had several that were getting close to the
1GB mark. My CTO gently prodded them into cleaning them up. Now
those users aren't even in the top ten..

At one
time the age in date was 60 days for MBM, but when we told mgmt that we would
either have to reduce the size of our IS on Exchange, or upgrade to Enterprise
edition, which was no longer available, because we were getting too close to the
16 GB limit on Exchange 5.5 standard, they changed it to 45 days and the memo
came from the CEO. No whining was heard:) One of the few times
that ever happened

RE: Mailbox size limits

2002-04-26 Thread Toni, Randy

I tried giving them one finger too but I made the unfortunate choice of
which finger to use :-)

Seriously, we open a mailbox with a standard (default) 10 meg warning, 15
meg send limit. Anyone who needs more can just request it. Managers have
much larger size limits, as requested. A few power users (finance, etc.)
also have more. You'd think this would be a ton or extra work for me since
everyone would probably be whining and calling us up to give them more
space, but the vast majority of users don't ever call. A few do - and they
get a bump - no problem if they need it.

Once upon a time we had a space issue with Exchange 5.0 and it's IS size
limit - lots of junk put us near the edge. It took a lot of effort to clean
up a system gone wild. We don't have that constraint now with 5.5 but in
our environment most users really don't need any more than this small limit
(medical people who just use email for departmental issues and schedules,
etc.) so we kept in intact as a default. Most of the users are not power
users, so this actually works quite well here. But I can see how it would
be suicidal to suggest these tiny limits in other types of shops.

Exactly as it says ... the recommendation was to restore the IS to a temporary server. In order to (legally) do this, you need to have another copy of Exchange to restore to. Of course, we'd all probably just install one of our existing Exchange CDs, and uninstall after we're done, but technically, that's illegal. Not to mention, highly time-consuming.

Restrict who has the ability to create Public Folders. Anonymous
permissions should be "None" on all Public Folders. Default permission
should be set to "Reviewer" for all public folders. You can grant specific

Subject: 16 GB Limit?

Ok everyone here is talking about the 16GB limit on regular 5.5, but all the
docs I can find from Microsoft don't seem to differencate between 5.5 and
5.5 enterprise. I was always under the impression that regualar 5.5 had the
16GB limit, and Eneterprise got rid of it.

Am I right?
If not what is the limit in regualr 5.5?

Nope; we're a small shop. Not everyone has a

Otherwise, most of us have a recovery server sitting in a
corner with everything installed ready to go in the event of an
emergency. It's not in production nor it is even on,
it just sits in a corner waiting for its day.

Restrict who has the ability to create Public Folders. Anonymous
permissions should be "None" on all Public Folders. Default permission
should be set to "Reviewer" for all public folders. You can grant
specific users access to specific Public Folders if they need access to make
changes, add things etc. Public Folders are a great way for say a
Purchasing Dept. to share their contacts within their dept. and the rest of

With MAPI based AV (like NAV) there is a timing gotcha. If Outlook =
