RE: Exchange 2007 SMTP setup
We already have send connectors, that is not the issue. The issue is the shared mail domain of company.com. Exchange 2003 allowed IMAP/POP clients to send from the company.com e-mail address but Exchange 2007 is not since it is not listed as a accepted domain. That address is the users primary e-mail address in Exchange. If I add it as a accepted domain and a Exchange user tries to send to a company.com address that is not in Exchange they will get a NDR. My current issue is testing with IMAP clients. Our users have 2 SMTP addresses, the primary external address and the internal exchange address: Company.com (shared with other systems) - primary mail domain for all users Exchange.company.com - secondary internal address only Currently with 2003 the imap clients point inbound and outbound to their mailbox server and check outbound requires authentication. On the client they have their primary address listed, u...@company.commailto:u...@company.com. When I try to configure a mailbox that is on the 2007 environment, inbound is the CAS server, outbound is the Hub Transport server, e-mail address is the same. The test fails: Send test e-mail message: Cannon send the message. Verify the e-mail address is in your account properties. The server responded: 550 5.7.1 Client does not have permissions to send as this sender. If I go into the imap client and attempt to send a e-mail to a internal person with the u...@company.commailto:u...@company.com address I get a Sys Admin message stating unable to relay. If I try and send to a external address is sits in the Outbox. Now if I update the settings so the e-mail is u...@exchange.company.commailto:u...@exchange.company.com then the test works fine and all outbound messages work. So is there anything I can do to get the HT servers to act the same way as Exchange 2003 servers. I thought about adding the mail domain as a accepted domain and setting it as a internal relay, but there were several docs about having to do other connectors and such. recipient policy help
I created new recipient policies to replace the legacy one's from our 55 days. During that process I had to add another domain for our of our business units. So I did an apply to all. We have 5 different exchange servers and I have 11 recipient policies. The users are being stamped and created correctly, but the DLs are only being stamped with the #1 policy. Here's the ldap from that policy. ((( (mailnickname=*) (| ((objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user)(!(homeMDB=*))(!(msExchHomeSe rverName=*)))((objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user)(msExchHomeServe rName=/O=ghsp/OU=Belton/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn=IZZYEMAIL))((obj ectCategory=person)(objectClass=contact))(objectCategory=group)(objectCa tegory=publicFolder)(objectCategory=msExchDynamicDistributionList) I believe this should stamp all objects, but only on the izzyemail server, correct? but it seems to be stamping DLs on all emails servers!! thanks,jb Jason Benway System/Storage Engineer 616-847-8474 telephone 616-850-1208 fax www.jsjcorp.com http://www.jsjcorp.com/ JSJ Corporation 700 Robbins Road Grand Haven, MI 49417 This message may contain confidential and/or privileged information. Do they need larger attachments to do their job? If yes, then either you are being unreasonable or your company is being unreasonable by not providing you the budget to support the needed size. Attachment size is a business decision and then IT should have the budget to provide that business need. I worked at an advertising agency in the past. Big attachments flying around helped them work better and faster and the company gave me the money to make it work, so I gave it to them. It was also real nice to know that every attachment bounce that came in was the result of the outside sender/recipient rather than me. It made answering that question nice and easy. -Original Message- From: Dennis Melahn [mailto:den...@advancedav.com] Sent: Thursday, June 11, 2009 12:24 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: what is your maximum message size in exchange 2007 Was just curious if I was being unreasonable to my Sales department with my firm stand on 10 meg. Yeah try and get a bunch of sales people to ftp anything. They do what they do and we do what we do. You can't expect them to use or even understand the differences in protocols and applications. IMO it depends on your type of business and how large your pipe is for sending data. If it's vital for business then i would allow unless it begins to affect all mail flow/usage of the web then ftp may be a better option. Like I said, setup and used properly FTP is much easier for everyone. We have our users trained on how to upload to our FTP site, note the url for the file and send the url to the person that wants the file via email. You're not asking the VP of Advertising for Eaton Corp to use FTP, they are just clicking on a link in an email. Re: recipient policy help
Your LDAP logic is a wee-bit off.. If I am reading this correctly, it says any mailenabled object that's: - any mailbox not on any server - any mailbox on IZZYEmail - any contact - any PF, DL or DDL ( ( ( (mailnickname=*) (| ( (objectCategory=person) (objectClass=user) (!(homeMDB=*)) (!(msExchHomeServerName=*)) ) ( (objectCategory=person) (objectClass=user) (msExchHomeServerName=/O=ghsp/OU=Belton/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn=IZZYEMAIL) ) ( (objectCategory=person) (objectClass=contact) ) (objectCategory=group) (objectCategory=publicFolder) (objectCategory=msExchDynamicDistributionList) I think you want something more like: - Any mail enabled object, on IZZYEMAIL that is a mailbox, contact, group, PF or DDL. ((mailnickname=*) (msExchHomeServerName=/O=ghsp/OU=Belton/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn=IZZYEMAIL) (| ((objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user) ) ((objectCategory=person)(objectClass=contact)) (objectCategory=group) (objectCategory=publicFolder) (objectCategory=msExchDynamicDistributionList) ) ) To shorten that a bit more, since you're hitting all mail enabled objects on the server: ((mailnickname=*) (msExchHomeServerName=/O=ghsp/OU=Belton/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn=IZZYEMAIL)) will do approx. the same thing. RE: what is your maximum message size in exchange 2007
We had a situation where a salesperson was trying to get a new customer. The potential customer wanted to send a 15 meg attachment with the product specs to our salesperson so we could get a quote back to him. His email was bounced because of the attachment size limit. We asked him to upload it to our FTP server, but he didn't want to do it. Now our rules are making it difficult for him, and he starts getting the feeling we are hard to work with. So do we relax our message size limit, or lose a sale? RE: what is your maximum message size in exchange 2007
Yup - we tell em that if they even approach that size, they should not be considering email - our internal users are automatically authorized to use our Secure Messaging system (browser based, looks like email) - sending to external user automatically creates an account for the external user which they can use to compose and send to us. It IS a couple of extra steps but moves the limit to 600MB. We also have mailbox quotas - this avoids using that up too. Archaic? Possibly but with 60k+ users on e2k3 on server clusters sized 5-8 years ago We live with it and it works for us - and our business partners. Re: what is your maximum message size in exchange 2007
While I tend to agree with the stance e-mail isn't the medium for large file transfers, the bottom line is that IT is meant to serve business requirements. As someone said it before, if the users need certain functionality to support the business, the business needs to give you the resources to make it happen. Its the responsibility of the IT professional to clearly state the pros and cons and to identify what those resources are. While it becomes a bit of an administrative PITA, you can set the global sending size limit to the maximum required by certain departments/users in your company, and then individually assign lower sending limits to those who don't require that capability for business purposes. This at least narrows the overhead of large attachment transmission. - Sean On Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 9:01 AM, Ralph Smith m...@gatewayindustries.orgwrote: We had a situation where a salesperson was trying to get a new customer. Of course, the limitations that others have implemented in their messaging solutions have little to do with whether DM is being reasonable given the balance of his firm's needs and resources. Limits? In our email world, there are internal users and external users, which are all viewed as potential customers. Outlook 2007 ADM Template
I'm gearing up for our transition from Office 2003 to Office 2007. I'm currently working on the new Group Policies and came across a particular setting that has me a bit confused. Within the Outlook 2007 Template: User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Microsoft Office Outlook 2007/Miscellaneous/PAB Migration The only options are Enable/Disable/Not Configured. The explanation states the following: The Personal Address Book (PAB) is not supported in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. By default, users are prompted when Outlook first starts to migrate the PAB contents into a Contacts folder they choose. This setting allows you to change migration behavior so that users are not prompted. You can choose to: 1) migrate users' PAB contents automatically to the Contacts folder (the default Outlook Address Book) when Outlook first starts (silent migration) and remove the PAB from users' profiles 2) just remove the PAB from users' profiles. Removing the PAB from profiles does not delete the PAB files; they can be imported later using Import and Export on the File menu. Is there a way to choose the behavior that I'm just not seeing? - Sean ~ Ninja Email Security with Cloudmark Spam Engine Gets Image Spam ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Ninja~

RE: what is your maximum message size in exchange 2007
I will disagree with that 20th century assessment. It is more like using a different screwdriver. If you want to setup and maintain a SFTP resource and the intended recipients are willing to partake in this method of file transfer, then great. Perhaps that is best for you. Perhaps an HTTPS file transfer service, either web-based or internal, may work well. Or perhaps SMTP is the answer. A bigger issue is that some enterprises have to store these messages for compliance. And while Kryder's Law (Moore's Law for storage) suggests storage will continue to grow, it doesn't mean we need to fill it with e-mails. There is no right or wrong answer here. Only to understand the needs and resources of the individual enterprise and choose the best option for them. I have seen many admins limit message size just because there is an option to configure it. Or they try to enforce arbitrarily chosen limits. -Original Message- From: Don Andrews [mailto:don.andr...@safeway.com] Sent: Thursday, June 11, 2009 9:49 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: what is your maximum message size in exchange 2007 Right on! - getting a bigger hammer to drive screws makes no sense to me. -Original Message- From: Maglinger, Paul [mailto:pmaglin...@scvl.com] Sent: Thursday, June 11, 2009 9:45 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: what is your maximum message size in exchange 2007 Not in my opinion, but this will no doubt spark a flurry of responses. And being the non-technical buyer he is, he says, no problem, I'll just stick with the methods and vendors I know. We can't even get a foot in the door because we asked him to do something a little different. Don't get me wrong, I prefer not to use Exchange as a FTP server, and I still have a 15 meg limit on incoming and a 10 meg limit on outgoing messages. My point is that sometimes what is best and easiest, and makes the most sense to us, isn't always seen that way by people outside the company that we have little ability to influence. So each organization has to make that call for themselves. Another example of why message size restrictions can be a problem: My CEO gets several messages a week ranging from 10 to 13 megs from various government agencies. She needs to receive these messages, and the senders are sending them out to numerous different agencies at once, so there is zero chance of getting them to do anything differently. We're using Tumbleweed's Secure Messenger - https based w/internet access via reverse proxy. Internal users authenticated via AD (or various flavors of LDAP), external users have local passwords. Shares servers/databases with their Email Firewall product which we use. UI is email like - send includes server generated email w/link to message, read (open) confirmation. I can send you off-list sample if you'd like. Tumbleweed has other, more industrial strength file transfer systems as well but this one integrates with what we had. -Original Message- From: Kelleher, Kevin [mailto:kevin.kelle...@mirotechnologies.com] Sent: Thursday, June 11, 2009 10:48 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: what is your maximum message size in exchange 2007 For those that are using an FTP solution for large file transfers, what are you using? That was an example; there are several people here with the same situation (often the same emails). Whitespace Question
Hello, I have Exchange 2003 Enterprise SP2 on Windows Server 2003 SP2. A few of our users have large mailboxes and I am enforcing limits on them. One user copied about 4GB of folders into a pst file and her mailbox size showed the size difference after that happened (reduced size). The user did this two days ago and I thought that I would see some whitespace regained anytime a mailbox size is reduced. My question is does this only increase the size of whitespace when a user deletes items? Re: Whitespace Question
You won't see it until 1. your deleted item retention period has passed, and 2. online defrag has completed, look for event 1221 in the app log on your mailbox server. That will give you the free space in the db. Not sure how to edit the ldap directly though the GUI, or which boxes to check to remote the query for any contact and any PF,DL, or DDL thanks,jb From: Eric Woodford [mailto:ericwoodf...@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, June 11, 2009 12:59 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Re: recipient policy help Your LDAP logic is a wee-bit off.. If I am reading this correctly, it says any mailenabled object that's: * any mailbox not on any server * any mailbox on IZZYEmail * any contact * any PF, DL or DDL ( ( ( (mailnickname=*) (| ( (objectCategory=person) (objectClass=user) (!(homeMDB=*)) (!(msExchHomeServerName=*)) ) ( (objectCategory=person) (objectClass=user) (msExchHomeServerName=/O=ghsp/OU=Belton/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn=I ZZYEMAIL) ) ( (objectCategory=person) (objectClass=contact) ) (objectCategory=group) (objectCategory=publicFolder) (objectCategory=msExchDynamicDistributionList) I think you want something more like: - Any mail enabled object, on IZZYEMAIL that is a mailbox, contact, group, PF or DDL. ((mailnickname=*) (msExchHomeServerName=/O=ghsp/OU=Belton/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn=I ZZYEMAIL) (| ((objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user) ) ((objectCategory=person)(objectClass=contact)) (objectCategory=group) (objectCategory=publicFolder) (objectCategory=msExchDynamicDistributionList) ) ) To shorten that a bit more, since you're hitting all mail enabled objects on the server: ((mailnickname=*) (msExchHomeServerName=/O=ghsp/OU=Belton/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn=I ZZYEMAIL)) will do approx. the same thing. RE: what is your maximum message size in exchange 2007
As I've been reminded on many occasions, IT spends money, the rest of the company makes money. Upper management has always taken the position that we should cater to the business side. They don't want to think about computers, they just want to use them. Make it work so we don't have to hear about it. If they want to send 75 meg messages I'm all for it. It's a huge excuse for going over budget. -Original Message- From: Barsodi.John [mailto:john.bars...@igt.com] Sent: Thursday, June 11, 2009 10:33 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: what is your maximum message size in exchange 2007 It's easy to criticize from the outside.
