Re: Exchange 2003 and Quota notification

2011-05-23 Thread Al Rose
Found that article:
http://www.msexchange.org/articles/customizing-mailbox-limit-warnings-quota-message-service.html

The other thing i see is misbehaving is that we did set the Issue Warning on
System Policies for all users to 350Mb.
When this limit is reached users receive the message that their mailbox is
full and they will no longer be able to send and receive until they clean
their mailbox.
Why is Exchange sending the Prohibit send and Receive message alert
instead of the Issue Warning one?

Outlook freezing

2011-05-23 Thread Ellis, John P.
Outlook 2003
Exchange 2003
Windows XP clients

We have had reports of some users in outlying sites (connected via ATM
155mps line) that Outlook 2003 is sometimes freezing when sending emails
and getting a balloon popping up regarding retrieving data etc.

I have been sent a screen shot of the Exchange server connection status
screen (holding down CTRL and right clicking on the Outlook icon in
system tray)
The only counter that shows any fails is the connection to the directory
server and shows Req - 43 and Fails 5 with an 8ms response time
The other counters for Mail show 12ms / 8ms / 4ms / 18ms / 25ms for Mail
Avg response

Are these good figures?

Since we upgraded last year to new hardware and fresh install of
Exchange the number of calls regarding trying to retrieve data from xxx
server have dropped

So far no calls from 'local' staff reporting any slowness in Outlook.

Any pointers for tracking down this issue. i,e server/client/comms ?

Thanks

John

Anyone know how to report spammy MS hosting customers?

2011-05-23 Thread Jason Gurtz
We have been receiving spam from a certain MS customer for several months
now, sent to a couple role email addresses that clearly have been scraped
from our website or garnered through purchased lists. No way this went
through confirmed opt-in... It's not terribly high volume, but it's also
not going away.

If you try emailing ab...@microsoftonline.com you will find that it
doesn't exist (FOR SHAME!) via an NDR from bigfish.com. Reports sent to
ab...@bigfish.com seem go to Frontbridge and that seems to be a black
hole.

Out of desperation I emailed doma...@microsoft.com (the only contact
you'll find in whois) and I did receive a human response. That is amazing,
but they seem quite unwilling to help or care in this context.

So, htf should one go about getting a spammer kicked off MS business
hosting?

It's irritating enough that a spam-l posting will probably happen soon.
Hope someone gets their ass in gear quick-like up in Redmond.

Public Folders losing email address

2011-05-23 Thread Brown, Larry
We are testing the procedure for shutting down Exchange 2003 in an Exchange
2007 environment. We had to keep E03 for a while due to a software connector
pointing to the Public Folders that wasn't compatible with E07 for a long time.

That has been resolved, so we're ready to move the PF's to E07 and be done with
the old boat anchor server that E03 is on.

But during testing we noticed that old Public folders that were originally
created on the Exchange 5.5 server, then moved to Exchange 2003, do not have
their email attributes when moved to Exchange 2007 servers as seen in the
Public Folder Management Console. Trying to send an email to the PF fails.

In production, the Public Folder Management Console also doesn't see the email
attributes, but the PF's are still receiving email because they are on E03 and
only replicated to the Hub Transports.

This is not the end of the world, as there aren't that many old PF's involved.
After the move it would only take us an hour or less to generate new email
attributes.

Just wanted to know if anyone has run in to this before?

RE: Public Folders losing email address

2011-05-23 Thread Knoch, James W
Yes, I figured out one way to fix it on my support call with Microsoft when we
first started migrating to Exchange 2010. For us, the issue stemmed from a
particular MAPI attribute that was not stamped in Exchange 5.5. For us it was
the MAPI attribute: PR_PF_PROXY_REQUIRED

First, get PFDAVAdmin and run it against your Exchange 2003 or 2007 server. Or
you can also use ExFolders against your Exchange 2007. Find one of the problem
public folders and look at the Property Editor for that particular folder. If
you look for the aforementioned MAPI attribute, it will probably not be defined
(blank). The default for this attribute is True when mail-enabled from
Exchange 2003+. You can also double-check PR_PF_PROXY is assigned some value
while you're there as well.

If it is just a few you can mail disable and then mail-enable those public
folders from Exchange 2007 (probably the best way).

If you had a lot like we did, then you can use PFDAVAdmin or ExFolders, to set
this attribute to True. Please note that if you do use PFDAVAdmin or
ExFolders, sometimes it will create a new AD directory object as representative
when it gets stamped with the e-mail address policy that applies to it (doesn't
always happen!). If it does happen, it will more than likely say that the
e-mail address is already in use when you then go to assign the old address.
So unless you can find that original AD object and delete it (in Exchange
System Objects in AD) you won't be able to reuse the e-mail address. For us,
however, the e-mail is still routed to the folder WITHOUT bouncing (at least
while there is an Exchange 2003 object still so far).

That is why I recommended just disabling/re-enabling, unless you have to deal
with several thousand public folders like we did.

I found a loose reference to this issue in regards to Exchange 2007 when I
originally came across this problem (at the bottom of the page):
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/webdav_101/archive/2009/08/14/howto-mail-enable-mail-disable-and-view-mail-settings-for-a-public-folder-with-cdoex-and-cdoexm.aspx

If the public folder was migrated from Exchange 5.5 and will not mail enable or
disable, then the pf_proxy_required may not be set.

You may receive a c1038a21 error message when you try to use Exchange System
Manager to look at the properties of a public folder

Subject: Public Folders losing email address

Allow SMTP relay by Group membership?

2011-05-23 Thread Robert Peterson
Currently within Exchange 2010, we do not allow anonymous relaying of mail to
the outside except from specific internal IPs via the Relay Connector.

The problem I have is a network application being used that attempts to send
mail from the local workstation via an SMTP tool from within the fat client
of this application. The mail is attempting to send from the local
workstation. If I add the IP of the workstation to the allowed IP list, I am
sure Exchange will relay the mail just fine. But I don't relish the idea of
managing static IPs for these multiple machines, across various subnets.

Is there a way to allow relaying via an AD group membership, either for the
machine or user?

Thanks for any ideas,
Robert

RE: Allow SMTP relay by Group membership?

2011-05-23 Thread Michael B. Smith
I haven't tried this, so don't hold me to it - but I think you could manage
this with a transport rule. It might take two working together, but I think you
could make it happen.
