Good thing you sent that with the High Importance flag...
300 mails per minute? 60x300= 18,000/hour! Larry Ellison won't
believe

Here is the de facto standard for securing Exchange5.5 from relay:

Are both servers connected to the internet separately? You need to
protect
the one that is the internet gateway.

There is an Antigen for Exchange2000 as well as 5.5. You can download
and
run the demo. It uninstalls clean if you choose not to run with it.

Hello!

Ok, from what I can gather from you talented folks is that Antigen is
the
best. Period. I think I have convinced management that I need this
software. I just have a few questions.

We have two Exchange 5.5 servers in the same site. Would I have to
install
Antigen on both servers or just the first? Is there Antigen for
Exchange
5.5 and 2000?

Based on answers to these questions, I'll probably have more?

Also, is Trend Micro's NeatSuite a decent alternative to Antigen if I
can't
swing the price?

Monday morning our Exchange Server, Power Supply burned down, so we got
it fixed today (almost 3 days with no email!!!)

Our Network is small
3 Server

1 Domain Controller/Exchange Server
1 IIS/SQL Server
1 Domain Controller/File and print Server

Is there a way for me to install another exchange Server on the File and
print server, and leave it there runing , and in case of a similar
disaster, I could point my mx records to that one, and have no email
loss?
i hope that I'm making my self clear.

Here's the deal:

Windows 2000 sp2
Exchange 2k sp1
2 back-end exchange servers
1 front-end exchange server

Installed the OWA server in the same domain and subnet as all of the
other servers. Installed exchange and prior to making it a front end
server, I could http to it and log in using Username, password, and
domain... it would then forward me onto one of the internal servers and
I would log in again there. I made it a front end server and chose
basic authentication. After http'ing to it again, I was now prompted
with just username and password... no domain. I set the default domain
to domain.local. I would enter my username and password, hit enter, and
be prompted 2 more times before getting an Error: Access Denied. Event
logs showed:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: W3SVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 100
Date: 11/28/2001
Time: 9:56:05 AM
User: N/A
Computer: OWA
Description:
The server was unable to logon the Windows NT account 'noone' due to the
following error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. The
data is the error code.
For additional information specific to this message please visit the
Microsoft Online Support site located at:

Data:

Any ideas?! The account and password are valid... the server is on the
domain and there is nothing between it and the DC's... I'm a bit lost
because this is usually an easy install.

Then why can Antigen be installed on our testserver and scanmail does
not?
According to scanmail, the core cannot be installed on that system, even
tho win2k + Ex2k are installed and working just fine.
One thing i miss in Antigen is the ability to ignore zipfiles that
contain filtered extensions, i WANT to be able to send/receive zipfiles
with .exe's in em. and so do some of our customers (who weren't all
that excited this morning after i installed Antigen on our server last
night, one of their clients regularly send zipfiles with .exe's in them
hehe)

But for the rest i do love Antigen.

wonder why Scanmail won't install tho any ideas?

Thanks all - unfortunately my original message for help went out
I got everything fixed.  LOL.  I actually ended up
  having multiple problems
  1.  The SMTP relay was open.
  2.  Causing my logging to fill up my HD.
  3.  Causing my virutal RAM to crash.

  Just
turning off the relay did not fix the problem. Nor, did deleting all the
messages out of que help.  What I acutally had to do
  was:
  1.  Free up space on HD by moving logs.
  2.  Disable all the SMTP queses
  3.  For every-single-queue I had to 'Enumerate 100
  messages'
  4.  Then delete all messages.

  -
Well that took forever as I had 900+ queues.  Boy that was a harsh lesson

I can somewhat contain the problem thru Exchange

Thanks all - unfortunately my original message for help went out
I got everything fixed.  LOL.  I actually ended up
  having multiple problems
  1.  The SMTP relay was open.
  2.  Causing my logging to fill up my HD.
  3.  Causing my virutal RAM to crash.

Just turning off the relay did not fix the problem. Nor, did
deleting all the messages out of que help.  What I acutally had to do
  was:
  1.  Free up space on HD by moving logs.
  2.  Disable all the SMTP queses
  3.  For every-single-queue I had to 'Enumerate 100
  messages'
  4.  Then delete all messages.

  - Well that took forever as I had 900+ queues.  Boy that was a
  harsh lesson

supposed to be relay-secure out of the box.  If it's an open relay,

In GroupSUCKS you can specify which attachment types to block but not

Word of warning about removing Inoculate IT:

1. Antigen is a groupware messaging solution, it protects the IS and
IMC.
2. Antigen does NOT protect your file system, c:\winnt\system32 for
example.

What I did:

1. Remove Inoculate IT for Exchange.
2. Install/config/run Antigen.
3. Re-install Inoculate IT, the normal server version NOT the Exchange
version.

Result:

1. Antigen (and whatever AV scanners you chose in Antigen) protects
your
Mail infrastructure.
2. Inoculate IT protects Your Windows NT Server.

  Jack,

  The
server cannot add anymore harddisk.  Using 2 Compaq Proliant 6500
runs as clustered with one disk disk array.
  The
disk array has 6 18.2G disks, two are raid 0, for the transaction logs. Four
are raid-5 (1 of them is redundant disk).
  It
turn up the firmware on the raid controller card is quite
  old.
  If I
add one more disk to the disk array I need to redo the raid 5 again,

  which is quite a hassle.

Anyway it is the same old story, users do not want to keep old
  mails.
  Have double the
quota twice, from 10 M to 20 then to 40 M.  After 6 months they come back
  and ask for
more.  We have installed the Mailbox Manager and will purge
anything that is more than 1 yr old.

Anything bigger than 1.99Gb (i.e 2Gb +) will no longer work. Disk
space is so cheap at the moment, why not but some more for the server and
continue to take advantage of Single Instance Storage (SIS) in Exchange.
That way, overall, you will use less disk space all up and ensure that your
backups are complete and simpler then using PST's scattered around the
place...

  save me from the GONE.SCR,
  Thanks for the tips.

Just a simple question I will not mind if I do not get an
  answer.

Anybody knows how big can a personal folder
  grow?

The reason I asked is my users are growing and I am running out of
  disk space.  We are due
to an upgrading from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 at the mid next
  yr.  At the mean time
I am advising the users to temporary pull their mails to the
personal folder.  I read it somewhere
the personal folder cannot be too large.  In fact anything
above 1 G is not advisable.
Definitely Microsoft must have a design spec, say .edb file in Ex
  5.5 standard is 16 G; so
.pst must have a design limitation.  It will not be safe for 1
  G, 2 G ...
At the moment I am advising them not to have it more than 1G, but
to the mid next yr is a long
  time..

Any points to enlighten on this issue is appreciatd.  One more
thing I am trying out Antigen,
  not bad at all.

IMHO, you should always make sure you have room for this. In fact, in
many cases, it's not a bad idea to also copy the i386 folder from the
Win2K CD onto the server's hard drive. This can be a timesaver because
you don't have to hunt for the CD, or for when you don't have a CD drive
or access to the CD drive on a remote system. All you need to do is
carve out enough free space and you should be fine.

FWIW, Microsoft will be releasing a CD of Win2K that has SP3 integrated
into it when SP3 ships. :-)

OK, this could be a challenge

We have a user who needs to send out a mail, so that each recipient appears
as the only recipient on the To: line (joe snow receives it To: Joe Snow
etc). I tried suggesting he send it to himself and Bcc everyone, but he's
persistent and won't have this. Does anyone know a bit of O2K VBA or another
solution that can go through a d-list (in the mailbox, not the GAL) and send
the mail individually to every person in it? My VBA's really not that
good...

Thanks in advance, and Merry Christmas Everyone!!!

 Hey all,

I have a simple question: Does anyone know if running without the '/3GB'
switch in the boot.ini on an Exchange 2000 server with 2GB of RAM could
cause message delivery problems? The Virtual memory error is showing up
every hour in the event log. The Server is E2k SP1, with about 800
users.

We had a few issues with messages that got delayed in sending out to the
internet, it looks like they were getting stuck in the SMTP connector.
Thanks for any help!

  Delays
  I
seem to have some messages getting delayed in my Exchange
2000 Servers. Looking at message tracking for one message, there is about
an 8 hour gap between "SMTP: Message Submitted to Categorizer" and "SMTP:
Started Outbound Transfer of Message" on the server the message was sent from.
The only thing I can think of that might be out of the ordinary is that we use
the "Send all unresolvable mail to" field as we have Sendmail alias lists that
are in the same SMTP domain as the Exchange, so we need a way for the
messages to get forwarded to Sendmail. These seem to be the messages that are
  getting delayed.

There could be delays with messages sent out to the Internet but It's
less likely that I'd hear about those. I noticed the outbound SMTP queue
always stays around 45 or so messages. Does this sound about right for an E2k
server with 800 users on it?

Perhaps someone could point me in the right
  direction?

  The
Environment: 4 Win2kAdvSrv-SP2 E2k-SP1 servers at various locations,
one is set up as the front-end, behind a Sendmail server.

To that end, simply use NTBackup which is Exchange-aware and is part of

Read the Disaster Recovery Whitepapers for both 5.5 and 2000 and all your

5 minutes of actually using NTBackup (if you don't have other backup

Hi,

If you set a policy limit in the info store for message size limits to lets
say 2mb. Is there a way to allow maybe a handful of users to not have
message size limits? We have 500 mailboxes and approximately 98% of them we
would like to keep message size limits but there are a few members in our
marketing dept that need to send out large files at times. It there a way to
do this where I will not have to indivually assign limits to the majority of
the mailboxes and just be able to override the limit for the marketing
mailboxes?

Thanks,

I need to add additional Internet (SMTP) address to all mail-enabled objects
in organization.
In other words, if user's email is [EMAIL PROTECTED], I need to add additional
email address as [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I already have MX entry taken care of and routing configured to accept
inbound mail for new.domain.com.
>From what I remember, there was a way to add additional Internet address by
doing Directory Export, manual update and Import.
The only problem - I can't seem to find what exactly to update in the
exported CSV spreadsheet! I tried adding "%SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]" to
already existing "SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]" in "E-mail Address" column but when
I try to import it back in, I get an error stating that event has been
logged in Application Log in Event Viewer. But of course, there's nothing
there.
I also checked Q155594 which does this differently, by creating custom
recipient - the route I don't want to follow.
Can anyone help me out with this one?
Thanks in advance!

We do the same type of thing, in-house. We wrote a little program that we
send out as an attachment from time-to-time. We send it to everyone in the
company with a forged header to appear to come from elsewhere, and we
include a nice little "pigeon-english" subject, similar to "I send you this
file to have your advice" ;-).
If the (l)user runs it, a nice little box pops up on their PC and lets them
know that they could have just hosed their machine and seriously fzckued up
the network. It also logs their username to a text file on one of our
servers, so we can keep tabs on who we caught. It makes for good
entertainment on a Friday afternoon.

I heard a comment on some tech show last week from someone who was talking
about the dangers of email bombs, and apparently there is a service out
there that you can connect to, compose a "tempting" junk mail for your
users, and send it off to see who will actually blow off the "be careful"
policy at work and just open the message and/or corresponding attachment
anyway. I assume that when someone opens the attachment, it will in turn
e-mail some kind of a report back to the service (or maybe directly to
you?), where you can gather stats on who/how many went for it. This guy
quoted a stat -- something like 40% of users will typically open any
message/attachment regardless of policy or the repeated preaching by email
admins.

I got a call recently (rather irate user) trying to open an attachment from
an unsupported app...
user: "I can't open an attachment"
me: "what is it - a word doc or spreadsheet or something?"
user: "I don't know"
me: "is it something you were expecting from someone?"
user: "no"
me: "why are you trying to open it?"
user: "I just want to see what it is"
me: "just ignore it"
user: "but why can't I open it?"
me: "you're PC doesn't recognize what it is"
user: "well, I sent to so-and-so, and what's-her-name, (etc..), and they
can't open it either"
me: "just delete it and I'll tell them to do the same"

Our users not only dive into the unknown, but they make sure their friends
are doing the same - aarhhhh! These guys get the sermon on a regular
basis but it just doesn't sink in. When I heard about this kind of service
out there, I thought "this is kind of sneaky (would it even be considered a
kind of entrapment?)", but it would clearly demonstrate the problem to the
managers here. Someone on another list once made a very wise comment
(probably been said here too) about trying to use technology to solve
behavioral problems, but that's not my intent. I'd like to use technology
to raise awareness of the problem - not to solve it. The service might give
us a more tangible idea if there are a lot of people here that blow off
policy and just open everything they get, and it could be up to the managers
here to deal with the offending staff appropriately.

Is this kind of service something very new? Does anyone know anything about
it? I wish I could have caught the details of that show but I was
multitasking that day (my 5-year-old took over as highest priority) so I got
side-tracked, but I'd like to know if anyone has any thoughts on this.

thanks
randy.

Here with use it, and we limit that size of the attach, so they have to use it to send
files..

This policy got the users to get used to it.
And now they love it.
Of course they prefer Regular ICQ, but is not negotiable..

Well, if they preferred net send, with WinPopUp perhaps for those legacy Win9x boxes,
they could probably write their own IM application.

Not saying it didn't work. I'm saying my focus group hated it. They were pretty
savvy & already had full ICQ at home, and did prefer Outlook and "net send" to ICQ
corporate.
