Antigen question...

2001-11-20 Thread Eric Brouwer

Hello!

Ok, from what I can gather from you talented folks is that Antigen is the
best. Period. I think I have convinced management that I need this
software. I just have a few questions.

We have two Exchange 5.5 servers in the same site. Would I have to install
Antigen on both servers or just the first? Is there Antigen for Exchange
5.5 and 2000?

Based on answers to these questions, I'll probably have more?

Also, is Trend Micro's NeatSuite a decent alternative to Antigen if I can't
swing the price?

RE: Antigen question...

2001-11-20 Thread Eric Brouwer

I'm not sure if I understand the question. Both servers connect to a hub
that makes up our DMZ. They both go out through the same interface on our
firewall. The way I understood it is all mail comes through the first
server we installed, and if it is destined for a mailbox on the other
server, it is "forwarded". Is that not how multiple servers work?

If I install the demo, do I need to uninstall it after 30 days even if we
decide to go with them, or can I just put in a serial number somewhere to
validate it?

Are both servers connected to the internet separately? You need to protect
the one that is the internet gateway.

There is an Antigen for Exchange2000 as well as 5.5. You can download and
run the demo. It uninstalls clean if you choose not to run with it.

? re: Antigen's free trial

2001-11-29 Thread Eric Brouwer

I'm not TOTALLY hijacking this thread, as my question is relative to it, but
I did change the name!

I am 99% sure I am going with Antigen ASAP. I have approval for the funds,
but I want to install the demo before I commit to something I have no
touched myself. We currently use GroupSucks. Suffice it to say, I don't
care for it. My question to you wise folks is this. How should I conduct
my test? Can I install Antigen with GS still installed, and then just stop
all GS services to test? Or should I completely remove GS before I proceed?

I humbly await your guidance,

Eric

I use Antigen, but I have heard that ScanMail is also a very good
product. You will not go wrong purchasing either one. I would try both
and see which one you like the best.

I know that Antigen has a free trial download that will uninstall from
the Exchange server very clean, so give it a try. Not sure about Trend.

I just read all the posts in this thread and noticed that no one
mentioned Trend Micro ScanMail. When I posted the question of what
anti-virus software to use with Exchange, most everyone said ScanMail.
It is even in the Swynk FAQ last I read it. Now everyone says Antigen?
Should I be switching after my year is up with ScanMail or what?

antigen is great - when set up properly (which is very easy to do) you
are
at least 99.%
protected.

While others are being hit by varies virus you will be protected. Whiles

others are waiting for updates you will be protected. Your exchange
server
will be up and on while others have taken theirs off line.

Hi,

Has anybody got any opinions/recommendations on anti-virus software for
Exchange 5.5 ? I've come across MailMarshal, Antigen, and GFI
MailEssentials, but they all seem quite expensive.

Thanks for any input.

Tony.

GroupShield removal ?

2001-12-04 Thread Eric Brouwer

Hello!

Does anyone out there happen to have access to the removal instructions
(automatic and manual) for GroupShield 4.0.4.039? I want to get rid of it,
and can not access their knowledgebase. I have NO idea where to find my
grant number and can't answer all the questions they ask to have it sent to
me.

RE: GroupShield removal ?

2001-12-04 Thread Eric Brouwer

Thanks, I'll check that out.

I made the decision LONG ago, but finally got the approval for funding a
switch. The homepage virus got through because Groupshield just decided to
stop, and didn't throw any errors, notices, etc. I just thought it was
doing it's thing. And then, even though I was patched on Exchange against
NIMDA, it still got in via a bad web site as best as I can tell. Yes, I
know I could have prevented that by properly patching all my systems, but I
still like the peace of mind NeatSuite will give me. What did you switch
to?

As great as Anitgen seems to be, I think I'm going with Trend's NeatSuite.
I like the idea of putting protection at the gateway, e-mail server, and
clients with the same product suite.

I think you run the standard uninstall.
But then you may have some issue after. You will want to look at this
http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq_sec3.htm and go to section 3.70 for
the info.

This was how I did it.

Let me guess you decided to change to another product cause of this virus. I
did the same thing when ILOVEYOU or Melissa came out (cant remember which)

I am so PISSED OFF!!
Our POS GroupShield after an update to 4172 DATs simply lost "SCR" from the
list of blocked extensions!!!
WTF?!?! And of course some dumb-ass user got an email infected with
W32/Goner and opened it!
I got it under control now by adding SCR back in and initiating full IS
scan.. So far only one infected message that was succesfully cleaned..
But still, WTF is up with GroupShield?! I am moving to Antigen, that's for
sure.

Sorry for this rant

Groupsuck REALLY sucks...

Even though I already had the latest dat installed, and all my services are

Any idea why GS might not be catching them? Everything looks like it's set

You need to get the 4174 DATs to catch it and of course McAfee FTP servers
are hammered!
Use ftp:/ftpeur.nai.com and manually download the sdat-4174.zip. You will
then have to manually apply it to your Exchange server, witch is major PITA
by itself.
See in FAQs on www.mcafeeb2b.com for "Why are all attachments being

RE: *** Warning *** New Virus - W32.goner.a@mm

2001-12-05 Thread Eric Brouwer

All I know is that a friend on mine called me at 10:00 AM EST that he got
hit by the virus, I immediately went to my Exchange server, and did the live
update. it said there were no new def's. I thought that was odd, so I went
to their web site. Sure enough, on the home page, there was a huge warning
about the virus. At that time, the virus def said 4173.

This finally gave me the excuse I needed to rip that junk off my server, and
install ScanMail. So far, I am loving the new program.

Odd ... when I looked before I went home last night (about 3 hours before

Mailbox move problem

2001-12-05 Thread Eric Brouwer

Hello!

I have
two Exchange 5.5 SP4 servers on NT 4.0 SP6 in the same org, same site,
etc.  I want to condense them down to the first server in the site.
First thing I am trying to do is move the mailboxes to the original.  The
first few went fine.  Now I am getting errors while moving.  I didn't
catch the error that popped up on the screen (but I could recreate it if that
would help), but this is what the event viewer:

Event
ID: 1008
Source: MSEchangeAdmin
Category: Move Mailbox

Unable
to move mailbox "mailbox name".

From
what I have gathered is that the mailbox might hold some corruption.  Does
this sound accurate?  If so, how do I proceed?  Should I export to a
PST file, and run the Inbox Repair Tool?  If I export to a PST, will it
keep the structure of any subfolders that were created?

Any
other ideas?

I actually feel BAD asking a question- I usually get a lot
more FROM the list than I give TO the list.  Not that I don't want to
contribute more- I just don't have the intensive Exchange knowledge others
have.  When I see something I can give input on, I try to jump on

You hit the nail on the head. I'm just thankful that there's
a place like this where one can ask a question for
free and even HOPE for a reply. When those in the
know take the time from their busy schedules and reply, that's
icing on the cake. Many go above and beyond by helping
off-list and offering to walk you through this or
that.
Heck, this list just makes me warm and fuzzy all over

Touchy???  Hmmm...  No!  This is probably the
third time in two weeks that someone has complained
about their question not being answered.

Maybe, we're busy today and we don't have time to answer the
question. Maybe, we don't know the answer (did I say
that).  Maybe, we just don't feel like
answering questions today.
There's a whole lot that goes into why a question might or
might not be answered.  Right now, I'm busy
spec'n new hardware and don't feel like answering
questions.  When I'm done in a couple of hours, I'll see what

2002-01-10 Thread Eric Brouwer

The other day when I was looking for anti-spam help (thank you all that
responded. Cleaning everything out did the trick!), this was EXACTLY how I
discovered we were exploited. Interoffice mail was fine. We received from
the internet fine. We just couldn't send. Our outbound queue had a limit
of 25,000 messages (is that an Exchange limit or something we set up?) and
the spam hit the ceiling. After cleaning both the outbound queues, and
closing the relay, we were fine.

I have an exchange 5.5 sp4 machine that has suddenly stopped sending
outgoing mail. Outside mail is being routed internally, and internal mail is

routed fineit's just mail destined for outside.

The exchange box uses a different dns server than it did previously, but
this was done weeks ago. Messages stopped going out after a reboot
yesterday. I've tried switching back to the old dns server, to no avail.

The Exchange box is behind a proxy 2.0.

Any ideas would be helpful. I can't find anything on TechNet.

John.

Nothing.  The refunded the calls even.  For s&g, I built another
test server on a PC.  Guess what.  Worked FINE!!!  I've checked,

  I

I have an Exchange 5.5 SP4 server that works fine with the
win2k machines on my network, but is just starting to have problems with
some macs.  I setup 5 macs on my network to use the server and it was
working fine for a day and a half, but now when they go to open outlook 8.2
on their Mac, it asks for the login info, but then errors out saying they
have network issues and to talk to your administrator.  I am at a lost,
as I am not a Mac expert.  The macs are able to access network
resources as well as the internet.  Any ideas?

Exchange setup question

2002-01-16 Thread Eric Brouwer

Hello!

Way back in the day when our Exchange server was installed, it was installed
with the vgreen.com domain. We are now the villagegreen.com domain. Does
this really matter? I think it does. It seems like when we send e-mail, it
says it comes from vgreen.com. Is this true? How can I check this? When
an admin friend of mine replies to my mail, he sees the following message in
his firewall logs:

vgreen.com.191.216.216.in-addr.arpa 216.216.191.226: can't verify reverse
address - hostname not found

Where is this reverse lookup looking?

Is there a way to change Exchange, without reinstalling to reflect the
villagegreen.com domain?

p.s. What is the best way to look at the headers of e-mail messages?

I do have villagegreen.com set as my reply address even though both domain
addresses still work for me. If I look at the headers for my e-mail though,
it still says they were received by mailhost.vgreen.com. Is it maybe not an
Exchange issue? Could it be related to how the server is named or my DNS?

Hi Eric.

What version of exchange have thou?

You can have many SMTP domains in Exchange, but with MAPI clients, only one
'reply address'. If you want to change users to the new domain for replying
and still retain inbound for the old one in Exchange5.5 you can do one of
two things:

1) manually open the properties page for each user for which this change is
required. Select the email addresses tab and add a new internet address
with the full villagegreen.com domain. Select the new domain in the window
and click 'set as reply address'

2) for larger groups of users, a directory export to csv is more practical.
You can add the new column (which Kevin or someone will provide...
'secondary-proxy-address' I think) and reimport. There is a KB article on
bulk import/export at the source.

You could also play around with Site Addressing.

Looks like your DNS settings (on your Exchange server) are set such that
your Exchange server's hostname is mailhost, and the domain name is
vgreen.com.

That's how your Exchange box answers on port 25, anyway. A reverse
lookup shows vgreen.com as well.

Sure... as long as the Exchange server isn't a BDC, or PDC.
Exchange(5.x) doesn't really care about domains so
long as the server isn't a participant in that role(i.e. PDC, BDC). Make sure
you get all your service accounts changed over to the new domain, as all
replication and MTA transfers will break. OR you give those service accounts
permission(trust) in the new domain.. or you create names exactly the same
with the same password in the new domain (NT 4.0 undocumented
  "feature").
WIN/XCHG 2000, however, is a whole new ballgame..

really matter?  I think it does.  It seems like when

this true?  How can I check this?  When an
admin friend of mine replies to my mail, he sees the
following message in his firewall logs:
  vgreen.com.191.216.216.in-addr.arpa 216.216.191.226: can't

Where is this reverse lookup looking?
Is there a way to change Exchange, without reinstalling to

Let me
back up a step...  The server IS a member of the villagegreen.com

Sure... as long as the Exchange server isn't a BDC, or PDC.
Exchange(5.x) doesn't really care about domains so
long as the server isn't a participant in that role(i.e. PDC, BDC). Make sure
you get all your service accounts changed over to the new domain, as all
replication and MTA transfers will break. OR you give those service accounts
permission(trust) in the new domain.. or you create names exactly the same

WIN/XCHG 2000, however, is a whole new ballgame..

  Hi Eric.
What version of exchange have thou?
You can have many SMTP domains in Exchange, but with MAPI
clients, only one 'reply address'.  If you want
to change users to the new domain for replying and
still retain inbound for the old one in Exchange5.5 you can do one of two things:
  1) manually open the properties page for each user for which
this change is required.  Select the email
addresses tab and add a new internet address with the
full villagegreen.com domain.  Select the new domain in the window and click 'set as reply address'
  2) for larger groups of users, a directory export to csv is
more practical. You can add the new column (which
  Kevin or someone will provide...
'secondary-proxy-address' I think) and reimport.  There is a
KB article on bulk import/export at the source.

You could also play around with Site Addressing.

  So it is listed under
the DNS suffix as vgreen.com?  I don't see why you shouldn't be able to
change the DNS suffix on the computer.  You will, however, have to change
your MX records.  When I perform a DIG on your domain, this is what I
get.  I am using the nameserver of gateway.vgreen.com:  You can see
where I underlined the record that is coming back.  If you are going to
change the DNS suffix on the server, you need to make sure that it is changed
on the MX record as well, otherwise, you run the risk of reverse-DNS lookups
  failing.

Unable to move a mailbox

Hello!

I am having trouble moving a mailbox from one Exchange 5.5 server to another
in the same site. If I start the move from the target server, I get a
client operation failed message at about 70% complete. In event viewer, I
get an event id:1151 message with a type:warning and category:rules. This
mailbox will not move. I looked at the users settings, and they don't have
any rules defined.

Any of you wise folks out there have any ideas?

Keith -

Thanks - sorry if I sounded frustrated - two very vocal users
and I guess ignorance breeds contempt as far as MACs go for
me.

Using Outlook 2001 - when I resolve the name I start with IP
and Alias and resolve to Computer Name and User
name.

Static IP address even on the same subnet plugged into the
same switch as the exchange server.

Not sure about the domain in the Additional Search Domains
will check that first thing in the morning.  Already have the
ticket open with PSS - boss didn't care - we will just get in the
queue in the morning if this doesn't resolve it.

Thanks for the advice!

  Jim,
Did you get your problem resolved?
If not are you using Outlook 2001 or Outlook
  8.x.
If your using the old version try Outlook 2001 from http://www.microsoft.com/mac/
Also are you resolving the names using DNS. If so how are
the macs getting their IP address, DHCP or
  static?
On the Mac in the TCP/IP control panel do you have your
domain name in the Additional Search domains. If not it might help
  having it there.

I hope this info helps. I started off as a mac person and
still consider them real computers. However I don't think they are
real network clients just like win9x isn't a real network
  client.

Delegating administration?

2002-06-10 Thread Eric Brouwer

Exchange 5.5 SP 4 on NT 4.0 SP 6a

Is there a way to delegate administrative rights? For example, I want a
lower level tech to be able to add mailboxes, and maybe even be able to
delete them, but I don't want them to be able to accidentally delete a whole
container or the site! Remotely possible??? Thanks!

Exchange 5.5 recovery/restore questions...

2002-07-26 Thread Eric Brouwer (Corporate DET)

Happy Friday!

We are running Exchange 5.5 SP 4 on NT 4.0 SP 6a in production. I am
testing our DR abilities. We use Backup Exec 8.5 to perform online backups
with the Exchange agent. We have 3 mail servers: mail1 (first in site),
mail2, and macmail.

I built a little test network. I built a BDC in our production environment,
and then moved it to it's own network, promoting it to the PDC. I then
built mail1 just like it exists live. I restored the IS, DS, DSADATA and
MDBDATA directories. Everything went smoothly.

I wanted to then test the ability to test mail2. I renamed mail1 to mail2,
and restored the appropriate files. I get the following error when
attempting to start the IS: "The Microsoft Exchange Information Store
service returned service specific error 4015." When I look in event viewer,
I see these two:

Event ID: 1121
Source: MSExchangeIS
Error 0xfaf connecting to the Microsoft Exchange Server Directory Service.

Event ID:5000
Source: MSExchangeIS
Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.
Error 0xfaf.

Any ideas??? The DS starts no problem. Is it related to the first server
in the site not being present?

I did that, and I get a -1181 JET_errFileNotFound error.

Event 5000:
Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. Error
Database is in inconsistent state.

The problem occurs when the Information Store stops abnormally and the
Eseutil.exe hard repair option (/P) is run against the Priv.edb file to
return it to a state in which it can be started. In addition, the previous
transaction log files were deleted, as recommended in the Eseutil dialog
box, but hard repair was not run against the Pub.edb file.

Help with SPAM!

I

Exchange 5.5, Sp 4 on NT 4.0 Sp 6a.  I don't know if you will be able to
see the header for the message I attached or not, but if you can look at it, I'd
appreciate some insight!

Someone is sending SPAM to me, that looks like it is coming from
me.  Is that a relay?  How can I test if it is possible, and more
importantly, how can I fix it???

Your
help will be most appreciated!  And if it is bad form forwarding a SPAM, I
sincerely apologize!

  Unfortunately
  no. As I mentioned
earlier, this is the method for someone else to get the
  complaint.
  Now as for
  bad??

The reply address
is  [EMAIL PROTECTED] which is probably a
collector of good addresses IE they hit reply to complain and the real
sender validate it as a good address.
The first server appears to be
from a host at 202.110.213.141 bounced off an open relay at 206.162.177.235.
I am not taking the time to research, but you can at www.samspade.org if you
like.

  With the reply being
a .RU I is another fine piece of Asia SPAM ... not the canned
  variety.

  Unfortunately, your
best bet may be to prepare a canned response stating the e-mail didn't
originate from you and the real information can be found in the header. The
chances of getting off their list is minimal, this is how they make their
  money.
