Automatically rename Exchange Server on Clients

2001-12-12 Thread Frank Labule

Hi all,

The exchange server I inherited has got a name that is separated by an
underscore character. Now that we are looking to migrate to Win2K with AD
and then to Exchange 2000, I'm looking for a way to automatically change the
name on the client PCs without visiting every single one of them. Can anyone
help? I haven't been able to track down any article on this.

TIA

If
your users are like mine and won't delete anything at all forever, perhaps your
best bet now would be to temporarily upgrade to enterprise which has no limit
before applying any limits. Applying limits as an after-thought will create a
lot of animosity towards you and will waste a lot of your time. It also needs a
lot of educating and support from Senior Management.

I'm not sure I can
recover that much space, I am planning an upgrade
to 2000.  I don't have a quota
in place it looks like I will need to implement that as well as plan some
formal training on the use of pst files.

If you
recover enough space within the database (perhaps 6GB+), an offline defrag
would not be a bad idea.

Otherwise, yor plan
is certainly sound.  Do you have a formal mailbox quota policy in
place?

Ghosts of Ex employees.

2002-01-09 Thread Frank Labule

Hi Folks,

For a few of our ex-employees, mainly secretaries, whose mailboxes have been
deleted from the Exchange server 5.5 sp4 on NT 4 sp6, each time one sends an
email to a mailbox they may have been connected to i.e. their bosses, an
undeliverable message is returned.

Any ideas why this is happening? It reminds me of tombstone objects I read a
while ago but not sure.

Verify that it's not all emails; I'll bet it's just appointments or meeting
requests. Check the bosses' delegates in Outlook and remove anyone who's
departed. If it is all emails, and not just appointments, then it's
something I haven't encountered before, and I'll want to know what the
resolution is.

I know of no way to centrally manage delegates for all mailboxes, so there's
no simple way to check everyone's delegates to be sure they're correct. The
best you can do is fix these when you find them and making checking for
delegates a part of the user removal process.

I see these symptoms frequently where I work. We are a law firm using
Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT4 SP6. Many of the attorneys use the Outlook delegate
function to grant their secretaries access to their mailboxes. One of the
delegate options is "Delegate receives copies of meeting-related messages
sent to me." When this is checked, then emails sent to the attorney are
forwarded by Exchange to the secretary. This continues even if the
secretary's mailbox is deleted. If the secretary leaves, the attorneys
generally fail to removed the departed secretary from their delegate list.
At some point, someone sends an appointment to the attorney and then wants
to know why they received an NDR.

Both.
Why don't you try them and see for yourself? Obviously not a show-stopper,
rather, a welcome convenience to resolve names in the Address Lists at the point

  If
the sender sent it and the recipient received it, then Exchange resolved
  it.
  The
delay could be caused by many factors but I never heard your answer to the

Ex-Employees Emails

2002-03-06 Thread Frank Labule

Could someone recommend to me what to do with emails from ex-employees we
have taken off our Exchange Server? A while ago someone said there is a way
of configuring an Distribution List and including all the ex-employees as
members of this list and the emails just go into some sort of a black hole.
Not sure about the details now.

Thanks

Frank

Could someone recommend to me what to do with emails from ex-employees

Not sure about the details now.

Yes to all the questions. I connect and authenticate to the network domain
before launching Outlook, can ping the very Exchange Server I cannot connect
to, Offline folder is set, I cannot think of any reason. May I add that
thelaptop is running Win2K Advanced server even though I don't see why this
should matter.

The question is lacking in details. How are you authenticating? Is your
dial-up authentication also authenticating you into the domain? If not have
you set your Outlook profile to prompt you for authentication when you
connect to Exchange? Assuming you are actually connected and TCP/IP is good
(can you ping the Exchange server?) then this is your next place to look.

First of all, that is only for Exchange 5.5. Second, obviously you don't
have to reboot your computer after adding host file entries. NBBTSTAT is a
wonderful too. Third of all, I've rarely if ever had RAS problems like
either Frank or yourself, so maybe y'all should check out your network
functionality (e.g. WINS) and wonder what's wrong with it.

I believe Exchange only uses Netbios (WINS) name resolution. You can try
adding an entry for the Exchange server in your lmhosts file, however I have
never had any luck using that over a RAS/VPN connection. Remember the
lmhosts file only loads at boot up, so reboot before you try again. Are you
using Windows 2000 for your RAS server. If so, on the RAS server do you
have "Enable IP Routing" selected on the IP tab of the Properties for the
server in Win2K Routing and Remote Access. This is required in order for
RAS/VPN clients to get WINS and DNS servers from the DHCP server on the
network. Also, try this after making the DUN connection and authenticating
to the domain. From a command prompt: \\net use
\\%ExchangeServerNetbiosName%\ipc$ user:domain name\username

Then try to open Outlook.

Exchange 5.5 Test DR

2002-05-15 Thread Frank Labule

Is there a step by step method of how to restore from an online backup to a
test exchange server? The way I've tried to do it is to build DR server
similar to roigin in config but not Spec, ie different manufacturers.
Installed NT 4 sp6 and made it BDC. Connected the BDC to live network to
pull acccount info, having given it a name different to the live Exchange
box. Once account info is on box, disconnected from live network and
installed Exchang 5.5, sp4 and restored databases.

Problem is when I get to the point of rename DR box to live box on the test
network the NT accounts disappear and I get stuck.

Exchange 5.5 SP4 on Winnt 4 SP6

Any ideas?

Carol,
Renaming was necessary forme because the DR exch was a BDC to reflect the
live network. I have used 2 machines as well but made the other a PDC. What

My test network includes a BDC built on the live network, then moved to the
test network. The restore is done to an Exchange server on the test network
which matches the live server. Authentication is provided by the BDC,
therefore no renaming of the test Exchange server is required.
