RE: Exchange 5.5 Disaster Recovery Testing, Recovery server licensing?

2002-02-14 Thread Howie Pince

Please correct me if I'm wrong but you MUST have a
recovery server in order properly restore you dir.edb.

I just went through this same situation.

If you just reinstall the whole NT server box from the
ground up you won't have the same SIDS and the
directory service will NOT start!

Your suppose to setup the recovery server as a BDC or
member server on the domain so you can get a correct
copy of the SAM first, the restore your *.edb files.

To me, in my situation with running SBS, this cant be
done. Cause under SBS you only can set it up as a PDC,
so how could I setup a recovery server with 2 PDC's on
the same network?

Question, how does MS view the license status of a
recovery server? Technicaly if it has to go online to
pull the SAM, it needs it own new licenese while doing
so correct? Or I'd hope this would be an exception?

Thanks

Howie

I'd recommend getting a recover server and testing
 on that. You can test
different scenarios, e.g. single mailbox, full
 Exchange recovery, entire o/s
 etc.

 Hi,

Just a quick question. What is the best way to
 conduct periodic DR test on
your Exchange server? Would you recommend
 uninstalling and reinstalling
Exchange 5.5 or just deleting the MS Directory and
 IS store and restoring
them from tape backup when you are ready to do
 another DR test. Any
 suggestions will be helpful.

Hey,
You can just open up task scheduler and change

I have my Nav CE for exchange now checking for updates
every 10 minutes.

Works like a charm.

Enjoy...

yep...same deal...actually NAV for Exchange does not
 follow the NAV CE
version numbers. I believe I am using something
 around version 2.11 for
Exchange, which is the latest (I think) for Exchange
 5.5, but my CE version
is 7.6. Also - I seem to recall that it uses a
 simple AT command behind the
web interface, so you can adjust it manually to run
 live update more often.

IMS, Accepting only specific connections, how to? Please help?

2002-01-22 Thread Howie Pince

Hey,

I am NOT a Exchange expert, just another geek trying to get the job
done.

That is why I sumbit
this problem to this GREAT forum of EXPERTS!

Anyway enough
sucking up for now:-

SBS 4.5 Sp6,
Exchange 5.5 sp4

Suits ok'ed a AV
service called"Message Labs" to start scanning our in outbound
email, starting this weekend.

Ineed to
change our DNS MX records to point our email domain to Messages Labs servers
instead of to my Exchange server directly. no prob

In IMS I need to
change "message delivery" in the IMS properties page to "forwardall
messages to host XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX" so all outgoing mail goes to their
scanner boxagain no prob

I also need to setup
"Accept Connections from - ", right now it's set at 'all servers, secure or
unsecure", want toonly accept connections for that Message labs scanner
box by IP, but if you select "Only from hosts using - :" you MUST either use
authenication, encryption, or both? This IS a
problem!

So my questions
are:

Do I setup another
NT or Exchange account for Message Labs server and give then the username and
password for this Authentication or?

If so, then if I
list under "Specify Hosts:" Message Labs severs IP, will all other hosts be
"rejected" by deault? how can you reject all but specific
IP's

Can't you just add
deny 0.0.0.0 to reject all other hosts or?

Thanks much in
advance..

Howie

There is a utility with NT that will create a recover diskette (rdisk).
One of the things it does is write the SAM to diskette (providing of course it
  will fit on a diskette).

  big maybe
Create a recovery diskette set on your main DC
  Go
to the "recovery" server and use recovery mode (I'm not sure how, I think it
  is an F-Key)
Restore the backed up SAM to the recovery server
reboot and give it a whirl
  /big maybe

  or
another idea I just had is

  SWAG
  Or,
backup to tape including registry using NT backup.
Restore registry from tape to your recovery server.
  Then
  try IS/DS restore.
  /SWAG

  Just
off the top of my head here. I'm not making any promises. I don't even
remember the name of the utility to back up the SAM.

  See
  if Q103280, or Q126464

  You
may need Regback.exe from the NTRK or BORK.

THANK YOU KDL!!!

That IS the point I CAN NOT use the backed up dir.edb unless I can
pull the SAM on the target box, MS suggests a "recovery server" as a BDC in
the domain to has a correct copy of the SAM.

KDL, your Idea is interesting, can one just pull the SAM off the
source box and replace it on the target box?

You'd think the SAM is live, and cant be copied, so boot disk time
correct?

Thanks guys. gals!

That would be the equivalent of BLB.

There are risks/issues you must assume in doing so. It
is a good backup to your backups, expecially for the most important
mailboxes, like the Exchange Administrator or
CEO/CIO/EIEIO.

(Assumption: Full backups... no incrementals,
excrementals, differentials)
Backups do a lot. There are two main components to
backing up 'email'. The databases and the transaction
logs. The logs contain information processed since the last
full backup. Toast the database

Also been running directory export out of the exchange admin prog, so at

Also have been running NTBACKUP to dat, but the restore ALWAYS fails cause

As of now I cant see a way around this recovery server issue and am ready to

The admin training alone would cost more than SBS.
Then there is the explaining to management about missing functionality.

Out of curiosity, what are you using to backup data

Ok
that will backup the stores, but what if something takes the WHOLE box
down?

Can't
restore the dir.edb without a recovery server, can't create a recovery server
with SBS?

Will
try your suggestion, atleast that would cover it if the store becomes
corrupt.

Thanks
much

Williams solution (Stop Exchange, copy databases) is the
cheapest and most effective "dirtbag" way of backing up Exchange with no
budget. I highly recommend you stop what you are doing now and try
it. Schedule Exchange to stop with the AT command and a batch
file. The batch file should copy the databases after Exchange stops and
then restart exchange. Remember that Exchange will need a 30 seconds or
  so to stop.
PS Don't be offended by the "Dirtbag" moniker- it's nothing
  personal.

BLB's are specific Backup Software that useMAPI to individually
log into mailboxes and back them up one box at a time. Nothing to do
with pst's. I highly urge you to go to:

  http://www.microsoft.com/exchange

  Go

Nothing besides, exmerging everday, and NTBACKUP to a dat tape that

Question, so is backing up pst's concidered a BLB or what

Out of curiosity, what are you using to backup data

THANK
YOU KDL!!!

That
IS the point I CAN NOT use the backed up dir.edb unless I can pull the SAM on
the target box, MS suggests a "recovery server" as a BDC in the domain to has a
correct copy of the SAM.

KDL,
your Idea is interesting, can one just pull the SAM off the source box and
replace it on the target box?

You'd
think the SAM is live, and cant be copied, so boot disk time
correct?

Thanks

Everyone seems to have missed that he can't properly setup a recovery
server. SBS only allows a DC not PDC and BDC. What about backing up the SAM
using recover disk and restoring it (the SAM) to therecover server
  first?

  Just
  a thought.

RE: No budget backups of exchange server on a SBS box, How

That would be the equivalent of BLB.

There are risks/issues you must assume in doing so. It is a
good backup to your backups, expecially for the most important
mailboxes, like the Exchange Administrator or
CEO/CIO/EIEIO.

(Assumption: Full backups... no incrementals, excrementals,
differentials)
Backups do a lot. There are two main components to backing
up 'email'. The databases and the transaction logs. The logs
contain information processed since the last full backup. Toast
the database and the logs could potentially be 'replayed' to bring your
system back to point of failure. A BLB/exmerge/offline backup will
not allow for this. Online backups also provide other checking of
your system and report to the application event log.

SBS and Norton AV for Exchange, what a mess, any ideas PLEASE?

Hey,

Anybody have any fun trying to get NAV for Exchange running on a SBS box
yet?

We are actively
running both Exchange and IIS off this box for our local
intranet.

Running 5.55, sp4,
NT 4.0 sp6, Proxy 2.0, IIS4 patched.

The program installs
fine, but your web interface thats supposed to come fromit's own webserver
at 192.168.0.1:8080, won't come up?

Looks like there's a
conflict with IIS or MS Proxy, even thoughis on :8080?

Anyone tame this one

Need to get SOMETHING going here AV wise at the server
level, and have NO BUDGET.

Thanks much in

from it's own webserver at 192.168.0.1:8080, won't come up?

Looks like there's a conflict with IIS or MS Proxy, even though is on :8080?

Anyone tame this one yet?

Need to get SOMETHING going here AV wise at the server level, and have NO
BUDGET.

Thanks much in advance...

RE: Cannot open pst file

2001-12-18 Thread Howie Pince

Seen this exact same error before when trying to import a pst off a CD.

The PST has to be copied OFF the CD and put on a HDD, and then you have to
remove the read only attrib.

Hope this helps

Howie

It doesit stinks horribly.
I was showing a lackey how to do a disaster recovery (using the
instructions I wrote that even included pretty color pictures and
everything!) and he skipped a very important step - redirecting the restore
to the DR server.

Fortunately I caught it and aborted the restore before the tape library had
loaded the tape!

It is very safe to assume that he will not be making that mistake again -
ever.

 Hi Guys

I've been through the archives because I'm sure this has come up before
  but I can't find it.

Basically whats happened is that a new user has arrived onsite with a CD
which contains a .pst file with all his old mail in it. When he tries to
connect the pst file as a personal folder he gets the error message
File
access is denied. You do not have the permission required to access the
file .. Anyone know how to get round this. Like I say I'm sure
I've seen this answered before but its getting near xmas and my brain
has
decided to go into holiday mode already

  Cheers
  Dougie

RE: Running a file level scanner on exchange dirs???

2001-12-03 Thread Howie Pince

I'm using Nav 7.5 on my exchange server and it has found a few viri over the
past few weeks in the IMC dir.

Is this dangerous to scan the exchange dir, and quarantine viri if found?

If so why?

Thanks inavance,

Howie

I do (with ServerProtect), but I exclude the exchsrvr directories from the
scan. Seems to work well.

Objet : Exchange partition getting huge over the weekend...

Hello!

Exchange 2000 SP1.

The Exchange partition (M:\ drive) gets huge overly fast during the
weekend : from 2.1GB on friday PM to almost 9.0GB on monday AM. No one
is at the office during that time. I only have about 50 mailboxes on the
server. What causes the log files to get this numerous this fast, over
the weekand when it is not the case during the week? Is there a way or a
tool that would allow me to view all the activity that went on on the
mail server???

Could it be that I am being used as a relay???

Thank you!

This statement is NOT entirely
accurate. Try the following syntax and you can direct wherever
you want including mapped drives. For example, C:\exchsrver/bineseutil /d /ispriv
/tf:\tempedb.edb. Notice, there is no space
between the /t and the drive you wish to defrag
on.

I'm not familiar with E2K, but on 5.5 I regularly (read
monthly) run eseutil. I run it because that is the ONLY way to
regain space in the Exchange DB that has been freed up by messages
being deleted etc. If I did not do this on a regular basis I
would hit the Exchange 5.5 IS limit.

I would guess that it would be /t f:/tempedb.edb
or what ever you plan to use for the defrag. It may not work,
it doesn't work in 5.5 when you try to redirect the temp database,
it must run on the same physical drive that it is
stored.

Good luck.
