RE: Lyris on Exchange

2009-01-22 Thread Kretche, Peter
Lyris isn't "supported" on Exchange however you can make it work. For a truly
integrated Exchange listserv, look at Ikakura
www.ikakura.com. I've used it in the past with great
success. They have a version for 5.5/2000/2003 published. Their 2007 version
is in beta, if you email them they will send you the beta.

Resource Mailbox question

For those of you who are more familiar with Resource Mailboxes in Exchange
2007, please take a shot at this question. Is it possible to have the body of
the appointment show up on the Resource calendar? All the other attendees get
this information on the meeting request, the Resource calendar is missing the
information. Is this by design or did I fudge up the creation of the Resource

That is weird. What happens when you try to check for updates directly from

Hi all

I think this is to do with WSUS, but I'm not entirely sure. I've installed a
dev CAS server into the organization and got it fully patched (Windows Server
2008 and Exchange Server 2007 SP1 RU6). However, Windows Update - WSUS - is
telling me that RU3 should also be applied.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before? Another server I've installed recently
(mailbox role) was patched straight to SP1 RU6 and isn't offering to install
RU3.

The only difference between the servers is that one (the CAS) is a VM running
on ESX, the mailbox server is physical.

For self service Distribution Group add/drop you'll have to wait for Exchange

If munging is the goal, create a mail-enabled Public Folder with the email
address desired. Then have it forward email to the distribution list. All
replies will go to the Public Folder which in turn will go back to the list. I
did this with Ikakura to achieve listserv functionality. Initially I just

I have finally managed to get clearance to restrict the ability to send to
certain DLs to an approved group of users. However, is there any way in
Exchange 2007 that when ordinary users try to send to this DL that the message
is routed to one of the people who has the ability to send to it for
approval/disapproval, rather than just rejecting their mail?

I'm not an Exchange guy so apologies if my request is noob-ish :-)

TIA,

JRR

ExInsight by Bitrunes

2008-05-09 Thread Kretche, Peter
Is anyone here using ExInsight by Bitrunes (http://www.bitrunes.com)? Based on
the screen shots it looks like a very handy program (maybe a replacement for
the missing ExMon in Exchange 2007) yet I'm not seeing much for reviews on the
software. There is a fully functional 15 day eval available however after
installing and connecting to an Exchange 2007 server it wanted me to restart
the Information Store. I hesitant to do this as I don't know much about the
product. I'm not encouraging anyone to download and run this for me, I'm just
asking if anyone is using the tool, find it useful and explain why an IS
restart is needed.

RE: Spam Prevention

2008-06-17 Thread Kretche, Peter
Arguments of why this is a bad idea, where to begin? I lost this battle a long
time ago. Our only recourse was to require a minimum of two characters for
first and last name and only display 10 results. I have no hard numbers of the
increase in spam due to the search however without the result limits, we were
harvested several times. Keep in mind with FERPA, the email address can never
be exposed. Maybe work with your university legal and pursue that angle about
all email addresses being protected under FERPA. Didn’t work for me but FERPA
is subject to interpretation.

I hope that lots of people have an opinion on this and can help me out.

The website folks here at the university I work at (I'm the Exchange Admin)
want to put everyone's email addresses on the website under our campus
directory to make it easier for students to email faculty and staff.

To me, there's no question about how unwise that it considering how easy it is
for spammers to scrape email addresses off websites. However, I can't seem to
convince them of the danger. They are of the mind that we have a good spam
filter and it will take care of that. My opinion is that we should take as many
preventative measures as we can and that their approach is like leaving all
your doors unlocked and saying that if you get robbed you'll just buy new stuff.

Can anyone 1) help me come up with convincing arguments for NOT exposing email
addresses on our website and 2) tell me what you do for safely alowing outside
folks to email via a publically available web employee directory at your
company?

Thanks!

This is curious because it seems logical enough that it should work. I use a
similar command all the time to create new contacts and distribution groups but
maybe it cannot be used to modify properties...

I need to 'uncheck' all of the Require All Senders to be authenticated boxes on
all the distribution groups and I don't want to do this by hand for 200 groups.

So I exported the group list to a csv and cleared out everything but the
display names in excel and re-saved it as a csv. Then I tried using

Import-Csv groupstest.csv | ForEach { Set-DistributionGroup -identity
$_.displayName -RequireSenderAuthenticationEnabled $False }

However it returns:

 is null.

Just for fun on this one, if you are doing ALL your distribution groups, don't
even need to do the .csv file.

found my problem and it was nothing with the command...it was that in the CSV I
accidentally typed 'dispayName' instead of 'displayName' (no L).

Thanks Rob Campbell for the handy "test" command to see what dataset the

Other than the reg hack and continually bumping up the quota limit, is there a
way to “fix” this. Spammers have a nasty habit of filling their messages with
junk x-headers and even though I increase this value weekly, we hit the limit
within a couple hours of the increase. I would think a Transport Rule that
removed x-headers based on regex such as “x-(*)” would do the trick (I’m not
good with regex, could someone confirm this would strip all headers that start
with x-). Is this a plausible solution? Can anyone see where this would cause
issues? Or is there a better solution to MapiExceptionNamedPropsQuotaExceeded?

We hit this recently on three of our DBs, we went the reg hack method. We have
a few home grown systems that add tons of custom headers. The biggest issue we
saw was IMAP client receiving "SERVER ERROR 15" and being disconnected. That
was enough for them to get up in arms...as a fix we moved them to different DBs
while we got down time for dismounting/remounting the DBs. If you're using MOM

The solutions we are finding say to either raise the limits with a reg hack and
figure out what app or domain is sending emails with unique x-headers; or move

You can’t strip all x-headers, that would break the transport engine.

There is a sample on codeplex of a transport sink that shows you how to get

RE: Password expiration notice for non windows users

2008-12-10 Thread Kretche, Peter
I have a VBScript that is scheduled to run on our DC's every night and check
accounts against the domain password policy and if they are within 14 days of
expiration, they are sent an email warning the password will expire and needs
to be changed or risk being locked out. Anyone interested from a .edu email me
off list and I'm willing to share.

Subject: Password expiration notice for non windows users

Hi,

One difficulty we are having is we have a lot of users who have exchange
accounts in our exchange 2007 organization that do NOT actually log into
windows machines in the domain (mac users, linux users etc). These people
either use entourage or other IMAP clients. The problem we are having is that
when users passwords are about to expire or do expire they don't get notified
by exchange and then all the sudden they just can't log in or get mail.

Is there a way to make exchange warn users of expiring passwords via imap, owa,
entourage etc?

Thanks!

Saved as databases.ps1:
Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.Exchange.Management.PowerShell.Admin
get-mailbox -resultSize unlimited | ft DisplayName, Alias, Database >

Scheduled task:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -command
"C:\temp\databases.ps1"

The error I get is "Active Directory server is not available. Supplied

When I run it from the Exchange Shell, it works great. Only errors outside of

KB943484 (MS08-003) issue

2008-02-26 Thread Kretche, Peter
Anyone noticed this on their Exchange 2007 server(s)?

Active Directory operation failed for . This error have been caused by
user input or by the Active Directory server being unavailable. Please retry
at a later time. Additional information: The directory service encountered an
unknown failure.
Active Directory response: 20EF: SvcErr: DSID-020A0EA3, problem 5005
(UNALBE_TO_PROCEED), data 87.
It was running command 'get-recipient -ResultSize '1' -SortBy 'DisplayName'
-RecipientType 'Usermailbox".

If so, check your DC's for the February MS08-003 security patch KB943484. This
patch limits the LDAP query capability to prevent DoS attacks. Apparently MS
forgot to test Exchange 2007 against this patch. The patch is gone back in for
some re-work and will be made available again sometime in March with the
ability to change a reg value for the number of objects returned. I'm in no
way advocating removing KB943484, just sharing information to keep fellow
admins from pulling out their hair like I did today.

Confirmed issue with Exchange 2007 Post SP1 Rollup 1

2008-04-23 Thread Kretche, Peter
I’ve been working with MS PSS for the past few days on an issue with Exchange
2007 Post SP1 Rollup 1. So here’s what’s happening. HTML email messages
coming in with Unicode character sets are appearing as garbled** in email
clients. The issue was supposedly resolved in KB941851 via Post SP1 Rollup 1.
However I stumbled upon circumstances where Rollup 1 actually breaks certain
Unicode messages. By removing Post SP1 Rollup 1, new messages are no longer
garbled although some that Rollup 1 did fix are now garbled again. Once they
are in the store as junk, they stay junk. So if you have not yet installed the
rollup, wait. If you have and are seeing the behavior, log a free call to
Microsoft or remove it until the issue is resolved. A hot fix is supposed to
be released by the end of this week or early next week. I realize this may not
make any sense at all, I’m even getting confused at this point. If there are
any questions, email me.

Deleting a folder from all mailboxes

2010-07-28 Thread Kretche, Peter
Does anyone know of a way to delete a folder in all mailboxes using Powershell?
We used Sunbelt VIPRE (back to the days of iHateSpam) and we've since moved on

actually do it.

I have a feeling deleting a folder in all mailboxes directly with Powershell
isn't possible, I'm guessing I need to invoke EWS through Powershell (which I
have no idea how to do). I've seen EWS code online for C# and I admit I'm not
strong enough in programming to put it all together. If anyone has any tips or
already invented this wheel and is willing to share I appreciate it.

Exchange 2010 and New-MailboxRepairRequest

2010-09-02 Thread Kretche, Peter
First I am so happy MS finally gave us a method for fixing mailboxes without
having to take the entire database offline. Now the confusion about this new
cmdlet sets in and wondering if anyone has some additional insight. I've
reviewed the TechNet Blog post by nawaral on New-MailboxRepairRequest located
at
http://blogs.technet.com/b/nawar/archive/2010/08/19/exchange-2010-sp1-new-mailboxrepairrequest.aspx.

And finally my question, does anyone know if running this against an individual
mailbox repairs everything on one run or are multiple runs required until no
errors are returned? Is the same true for a full database repair, would the
command need to be repeated several times or should it repair everything the
first run?

RE: Exchange 2010 and New-MailboxRepairRequest

2010-09-09 Thread Kretche, Peter
My experience thus far has been needing to run it several times. Following
event logs after each run, I found on one mailbox where things were "repaired"
on each run of three iterations. On the fourth iteration nothing was indicated
as being fixed.

The general "belief" is that you should only have to run it once. But there is
little experiential evidence to back that up.

However, you can easily test that with the -DetectOnly switch.

Not a very satisfying answer, I know.

Is the same true for a full database repair, would the
command need to be repeated several times or should it repair everything the
first run?

Damaged Folder Views. Outlook client shows various folders as empty when
selected. Changing the view by hitting "Auto-Preview" works around the issue
however users are not pleased about having to do this repeatedly throughout the
work day.

Others experiencing this issue are vocal in this TechNet thread

I have a sales guy traveling in Ethiopia Africa. Remote Mail, OWA or BB does
not work but he can get Hotmail and Live messenger. He asked if I temporarily
cold forward his e-mail to Hotmail, what's the best way of doing this? In EMC I
can forward mail but only to internal mails, so I went in to ADUC added a User
Mailbox with the Hotmail account. However after an hour EMC still can't see it!
Is this the proper way of doing it?

Promodag makes a freeware product called StoreLog that can do some basic
analysis. It uses Access as a backend DB so it's rather limited in many
regards but if you're just looking for basics, it's worth a look. You could
always use Powershell to query the log files and do various output.

RE: Email count.

2010-09-30 Thread Kretche, Peter
All a matter of how you output the message tracking logs. Here's one I use to
track users that exceed 200 recipients in more than 50 messages in an hour.
Useful for determining if someone has been phished. Just one example of using
PowerShell to analyze the logs.

## Begin ##
Add-PSSnapin *exchange*
$time = (Get-Date).AddHours(-1)
$bad = 0
$Senders = Get-ClientAccessServer | Get-MessageTrackingLog -Start $time
-ResultSize unlimited | Where-Object {$_.EventID -like 'SEND'-and $_.Sender
-match "^...@uwgb.edu"} | Group-Object -Property "Sender" | sort Count

$messagepriority = "Normal"

foreach ($sender in $senders)
{
$sender | add-member -MemberType NoteProperty -name
RecipientCount -value 0

$sender.group | foreach {$sender.RecipientCount +=
$_.Recipients.Count}

if ($sender.RecipientCount -gt 200 -and
$sender.count -gt 50)
{
$messagePriority = "High"
$bad = 1
}
}

$senders2 = $senders | sort RecipientCount

$body = $Senders[-1..-15] | select Name,Count,RecipientCount
$body += ""
$body += ""
$body += ""
$body += $Senders2[-1..-15] | select Name,Count,RecipientCount

$body = $body | ConvertTo-Html

### Email Results Normal Priority ###
function sendmail([string] $body)
{
$SmtpClient = new-object system.net.mail.smtpClient
$MailMessage = New-Object system.net.mail.mailmessage
$SmtpClient.Host = "mailhost.domain.com"
$mailmessage.from = "topsend...@domain.com"
$mailmessage.To.add("adm...@domain.com")
$mailmessage.Subject = "Critical attention needed, possible phished user!"
$MailMessage.IsBodyHtml = $True
$mailmessage.Body = $body
$mailmessage.Priority = $MessagePriority
$smtpclient.Send($mailmessage)
}

Policy based email creation issue

2010-12-02 Thread Kretche, Peter
With Exchange 2010 SP1 I'm finding if I have two users with the same name the
user policy is adding a "2" or "3" to one of the email addresses even when the
aliases are completely different. I'm sure it has something doFor example
Smith, Jacqulyn (smithj) and Smith, Jacqulyn (smitj99). One is
smi...@domain.com, the other is
smitj...@domain.com. Even though there is no
smit...@domain.com. Anyone encountered this, got a

RE: Store Crashed, Mailbox in Quarantine - Help!

If this is Exchange 2010 SP1 have you tried new-mailboxrepairrequest? A lot
cleaner than export-delete-recreate-import. You may have to run it several
times to repair the mailbox completely. Check the App Log in Eventviewer for
repair status messages.

I was able to take the mailboxes out of quarantine and then use
New-MailboxExportRequest. As a backup I also performed extracts from Outlook.
One user was a hard-core calendar user and it did hork some of her appointments
but for the most part it all went well.

RE: Store Crashed, Mailbox in Quarantine - Help!

2011-07-27 Thread Kretche, Peter
“New-MailboxRepairRequest -Mailbox -CorruptionType

check the archive mailbox and -detectonly to only see what is wrong with a

I did the very first time it happened, though for a 2gb mailbox it ran very
quickly. I’d certainly be grateful for a sanity check on the syntax as there’s
no way I think it could have checked each item in the time it took.

If this is Exchange 2010 SP1 have you tried new-mailboxrepairrequest? A lot
cleaner than export-delete-recreate-import. You may have to run it several
times to repair the mailbox completely. Check the App Log in Eventviewer for
repair status messages.

I was able to take the mailboxes out of quarantine and then use
New-MailboxExportRequest. As a backup I also performed extracts from Outlook.
One user was a hard-core calendar user and it did hork some of her appointments
but for the most part it all went well.

How were you able to perform an extraction if the mailbox itself was corrupt?
Did you extract from the last backup?

RE: Unable to recreate DAG

2012-02-20 Thread Kretche, Peter
I was able to track down the cause of this issue. For some reason the
remove-databaseavailabilitygroup did not clean all the file shares from one of
the servers. When the New-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup cmdlet ran it couldn't
delete/create the share. Once I did a manual delete all was well. Hopefully
this helps someone else in the future.

3 x Exchange 2010 SP2 Enterprise Edition servers

I had a DAG with the name of "DAG1", due to my own error I broke the DAG and
went through the steps to remove it. Remove databases, remove servers, remove
DAG. I want to recreate the DAG with the same name of "DAG1" for posterities
sake however I get the error "Input string was not in a correct format." when
running "New-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup DAG1". Anyone have thoughts on this?

Foreign Connector suggestions

Hi Peter,
Had a similar issue here while migrating from Exchange 2003 to
2007. We used FAX1:*;1 as the address space and configured a drop directory.
We use Omtool as our faxing solution. IIRC, the issue had to do with our old
2003 server using the FAX:*;1 address space so we had to define a new on the
2007 server.

Thanks!
