If someone asked me, I would tell them to go to college. Personally, I
think a college degree is a nice thing to have no matter what field you
go into. I'm 21 and like many, my experience was gained through not
having a social life when I was a teenager ;) (Though things have
changed now), I am still gaining tons of experience. I left as an
assistant here to work for Microsoft as a contractor when I was 19.
After a year there, and loving it, I decided I just wanted to go back
to school and finish up a 4 year degree- in whatever it may be, and
probably return back to the Redmond area. In the meantime I landed a
position back at where I was an assistant, as their admin and have
gained even more experience, while attending college. I have no certs,
but it's something I figured I would try to get as well, to get them out
of the way. Why not? At any rate, I feel a college degree is worth it.

I'll agree that getting a college degree, or certs, does not guarantee
competency. Not all doctors and lawyers are competent any more than all
MCSE's are competent. You still have to prove yourself. The problem is
somebody has to give you a chance.

Unfortunately, having MCSE's on staff is part of the marketing hype used
to
sell services. You, and other MVPs, have kind of transcended the need
for a
MS cert, but you're probably more the exception rather than the rule. It
does seem, though, that many of the MVPs do have MS Certs.

I don't know what I'd tell a high school senior that wants to get into a
technical career.

Re: b) I don't think that's true in most cases. Many of the great
consultants I work with (or have had working for me when I was in a
regular company) didn't have degrees. And I don't have a degree (or any
certs, for that matter), and I certainly seem to have had zero problems
finding a job with a large consultancy.

BUT... I do think that college degrees are valuable things, and
wouldn't mind having one. Finding time to go back and get one at this
point is something I'd like to do, but other things keep cropping up and
I haven't dedicated myself to doing it yet.

a) You won't be able to get a job outside the US - most countries
require a
minimum academic qualification for immigration now (there are
exceptions -
Canada and Australia being the main ones)
b) Simple fact is though you won't even get invited for interview at a
lot
of companies. Most large consultancies are like this.

So to say you can choose your own career path is simply not true.

POTS/PBX lines, AS400's, SCO, Linux, DOS, 9x, NT/2k and much more. That
being said, is there any real reason to have something on paper saying I
am a MCSE, MCP, CCNA, GOB (Good ol' Boy), etc? If you were hiring
someone, how much weight does paper have in regards to real world of
IT/IS? I am content with my current position as sys admin, but just

If someone sends from an email address of [EMAIL PROTECTED],
addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED], will
automatically forward the message on to [EMAIL PROTECTED]? Or, as that
TechNet articles sort of implies, you must create a user to forward to a
mail-enabled contact? If people are currently just having a
mail-enabled contact, without a user/mailbox, have you read this somewhere,
or did you just find that out and say, wow, cool that works? During
testing this theory, we found that it does work internally, however we are
not live with this system, and the user database has already been
"migrated"over with existing aliases and addresses. (upgrading
from BSDI 4.2 Sendmail with popper so mail is probably not going to be
moved, most likely it will just be merged with new mail in OE via

Re: mail-enabled contact...

Title: Message

Jennifer,

Right, but that says how to forward from a mailbox
to a custom recipient. I am looking for something that says you can just
use a mail-enabled contact to forward messages to another email address.
Basically I want to have other people emailmy company, but have the
message forwarded on to a remote user at a different domain, ie hotmail,
netscape, aol etc. I don't want, or need, the remote user to touch my
network. They don't need access to anything, other than my ftp site, which
people have separate, none NT authenticated accounts. As Joe said, he has
used this method in the past with no worries. So I am guessing that people
use this, more than the 2 of us, so I would like to see it
documented.

Maybe I am not reading that article closely enough,
but I read that as you HAVE to have a mailbox enabled user to forward
messages.

just my thought before bed,

Mike Z

Since you have these e-mails in a .pst file, I
think you can create a rule which would forward the message to his new
e-mail address. Although normally rules would run when the messages
arrive, you can use them in the inbox (RUN NOW).

The challage would be to create a rule which
would cause each and every e-mail to be forwarded. Well, it may not be
possible to create a rule to include all, but maybe you can create more
than a few. For example, if you create a rule whichincludes
"SENT TO", you may clear most of the messages. Looking at the messages you
may come up with some 'creative' rules :)

Hi Williams,

I have setup thecustom recipient for his New Zealand
address sometime ago and using the Alternate
recipient to forward mails to the new address. Now he is
requesting me to forward all his old mails
to the new address. At first I have export his mailbox to a
personal folder and ask the administrator
at New Zealand to download it from out ftp server. The
problems lies that Waikato Univ in New Zealand
is using Mac and have problem converting the pst file to Mac
format.

Going into Outlook and forward mails one by one is tedious, he
must has thoundsands of mails.
Is there any tools available for me to do this? Otherwise
the option left is for me to look for a Mac,
install Outlook in Mac, export out to Mac format then send to him
again. In Singapore here we
hardly used any Mac and I do not have one within the comp centre
here.

  Exchange5.5:
Create a custom recipient with his New

Go to his mailbox properties, Delivery

  Hide both from the GAL.

We
have2 offices downtown Chicago, connected via a point-to-point T1, they
also share our dual T1's to the 'net. At our peak employment time, we had
close to 100 users sharing this T1 and only really had connection issues in the
morning, when everyone came in, and around lunch time with people browsing the
'net and email. At times, it would put a strain on the T1, but that was
usually when someone was transferring mp3's or other large

Well, this would help a lot, but I just gave my 2 week notice here, to go to
another small company where I get to figure out how to setup an AD domain
with Exchange 2000 and migrate from sendmail/popper. Yuck Anyway,
thanks for the help and I suppose I will be nice and send the links to my,
*cough* replacements. :)

Well, I did another restore the other night of Exchange 5.5 sp3 and realized
that the primary NT account permissions DO NOT transfer over. I can access
all mailboxes as administrator, but the user ownership is gone. Also, the
permissions at all levels are gone and have to be recreated. I/We never
checked to verify permissions before this, as we just tried to access a
mailbox as administrator, so I am just wondering if anybody knows right off
what the problem might be.

My thoughts, which might be wrong, but nonetheless going to speak my mind,
is that we can't redirect the directory when doing a restore and because of
that, permissions aren't being copied. So, please let me know whether I am
right in my thoughts, or completely off-track. So, whether I am wrong or
not, how do I copy permissions and restore them to a test server?

Neil,

Well, the test exchange server, is on our actual domain, it is just not part
of the site. We use it to restore mailboxes when needed, so the SAM should
be fine. Under permissions, nothing is listed, not even the Account Unknown
entries, it is like we are not backing up/able to restore something, like
the directory that might be preventing us from getting the permissions
transferred over.

One of the requirements of doing an Exchange restore (As I understand it) it
is having the same Server name. Hence, doing the restore on the live
network to a test server would prove difficult.

I do remember reading somewhere that you can restore the Information store
(Not the directory) to an alternate server, but I would imagine that as the
directory isn't being restored one of the effects would be loss of
permissions (Like your describing). I have never tried this though and so
I'm only guessing.

This is the only way to do it. Also, if you are using a centralized backup
system, you will also have to connect your backup machine to your test
network in order to be able to do the restore.

Simple - Build a BDC on the live network, disconnect it from the live

There is a MSKB Q article about this. Basically, when you burn the pst to a

it should work, but didn't for me. I ended up having to zip them first,
burn to cd, then copy and unzip. Should work fine. Let me know.

I now have a user who is trying to send an attachment that takes him

An easier way would be to go the Connections tab on the Internet Mail
Service, click on the Message Filtering button and just add this persons
smtp address and then stop and start your Internet Mail Service you won't
have to mess with adding a custom recipient to your GAL. I've used this
method for blocking specific address for several years and it works
extremely well. The sender will get a notification that their mail is being

Exchange Server 5.5 has a limit of 160 contacts in a distribution list. You
can side-step the limit by splitting your lists.

Is this true ? I never made a list above 100 in 5.5 .. Is this also the
case in Exchange 2000 ?

RE: Applying Mailbox Limits....After the Fact

2002-02-14 Thread Mike Zatkalik

I am in a similar position. We had a 250MB warning, 300MB prohibit and a
sales person complained to my boss and my boss said to remove the limits on
EVERYONE. Now, I have 6 mailboxes in the 1GB+ range and the majority of the
other mailboxes are above 400MB+. Of course all of these huge mailboxes are
on laptops, so the OST is frickin huge and every other month it gets
corrupted and has to be recreated. My company is about 230 user with a
priv.edb of 47.5GB. Backups only take a whopping 8 hours for full backup,
meaning about the same for a restore. Management is upset that the restore
would take so long, but they aren't willing to enforce limits, or delete
mail. Oh well, what can I do.

275 warning, 300 prohibit. Wow that's pretty lenient. You must have ample
IS space on your server. Im forced to set mine at 50MB warning 60 mB
prohibit. But then again there are over 500 mailboxes.

Use the HEADERS.EXE file to build a CSV template of the mandatory and
optional values you want to extract from the database. Use the directory
export tool with the CSV file you generated with HEADERS and then set the
limits you wanted on the boxes you wanted, then import.

Barring that, and you want to set a GLOBAL value, use the values on the
server in the Private Information Store object. This will not overwrite any
values set on individual mailboxes.

Does anyone know of a utility or script that can do the following under
Exchange 5.5, Win2k Server SP2, About 250 or so recipients:
I would like to apply mailbox limits at 275mb warn and 300mb disable send.

The twist is that for existing users over 300mb I would like their limit
warning to be 75mb more than what they currently have and their disable send
limit to be 100mb more than what they have.
Is there a utility or script available that will scan my mailboxes and apply
these limits? Maybe I haven't figured out the correct wording yet but I
can't find any reference to this on the web or technet.

We are using BE 8.5, and looking in to moving to BE8.6 to be able to backup
to a file, for added recovery possibilities. We have done restores numerous
times, and everything goes smoothly, but we haven't tried the restoring
using just the logs. Working on seeing if I can replay a couple of days of
mail, on a week old full backup, to see what happens. :) Will let you guys
know if this actually works, or just causes problems.

We use Retrospect by Danz...system wide. Our problem was that it didn't
really backup the system state because our backup server at this location is

a Mac

Besides that, the software is great. There is a little program you can use
to backup the system state and then restore is fine. Have experienced
another restore with AD server since we discovered this minor flaw with NO
hitches.

Hope this helps...

RE: Doing test restore with transaction logs...

2002-02-07 Thread Mike Zatkalik

Hello again,

Going to try to explain my question again, seeing that I haven't gotten any
feedback yet. We are looking at setting up a hot site with servers,
leased line, etc where a full backup location could be utilized in case of
complete building loss. We are looking for a relatively reliable method to
get our mail backups off-site nightly and we are discussing the
possibilities of just send our transaction logs nightly to this remote site,
along with 1 or 2 tapes with a full backup. If I needed to, could I restore
the full backup, copy the logs for that week, restart the IS and once the
logs are replayed, be back in business? Would this work? Any comments,
articles, kb's or alternative options are highly appreciated.

Thanks again,

Hello all,

Trying to do some testing in regards to DR on Exchange 5.5 sp3 on NT4. We
are looking into doing backups over the wire, and wondering if I send the
transaction logs offsite, at the same location that has our full backup
tape, can I do a restore using these logs? After reading through the 5.5 DR
guide from MS, it sounds like you can replay the logs, actually sounds like
you have to play them back, but what is the syntax of this command? All of
the kb articles I see are dealing with recovering after transaction log
drive is lost. Sorry for the newbie question, but realized that I don't
know exactly how to do this. I have, numerous times before, completed a
full restore to a separate server and recovered multiple mailboxes without
any problems, but haven't tried to restore using the logs, for an up to the
minute restore. Thanks in advance for information, or even kbs that could
help in this matter.

Exchange 5.5 SP4 using Outlook 98. NT 4.0 SP6a

I have a user who sent a meeting request to four people this morning.
She received a message back from the System Administrator account

this afternoon saying two of the recipeints could not be contacted.

However, the two recipients listed were NOT even invited on the

initial request. Not only were they not invited, but they are no

longer even members of the company, so I don't see where they could

have accidentally been invited. There not in USRMGR or the

Global Address list. This makes me wonder how many other people

received the invitation that ARE part of the company but aren't

one of the four members that should have been invited. When I go

back to the original message, there are only four individual people

listed. Baffling.

This user also occasionally has mail get stuck in her OUTBOX, which

is probably a totally separate issue. I find 6 or 7 reasons in

technet that could be causing this issue, but I just thought I

would throw the information in, just in case it rang a bell with

somebody else.

Anybody ever have a meeting request issue like this?

Thanks.

RE: OWA for 5.5

2002-01-16 Thread Mike Zatkalik

I disagree with this Marc. I have a E5.5 sp3 server on NT4 sp6a, and a
separate OWA 5.5 sp3 machine running on W2K sp2 without any problems.
Before I brought that online, I had a NT4sp6a running OWA that had issues.
So I temporarily had 2 OWA servers, one available outside, one inside only
by IP. I had no problems and after a bit of testing, extended lunch, I
brought the W2K OWA machine up, and took down the old OWA and it was
seamless.

No, the OWA you install will have no impact on your Exch box.

If you setup another server running nothing but IIS and OWA (for 5.5) does
it make a connection with the Exchange server that you put in during the
install and make any changes? I want to setup a separate test OWA server,
but want to make sure that it will not effect the running setup. Thank you,

Title: RE: PST files...

I have
tried this numerous times with different mailboxes, exporting the mailbox,
simply copying the mailbox but it never works. I know that I have heard

attempted give me the same errors. My work around, zipping then burning to
cd works, but is a PITA and driving me crazy.

Trying to archive a number of pst files to a cd-rom, however

The only way around this that I have found is to zip

IMS hung up again...

2002-01-14 Thread Mike Zatkalik

This is the 3rd time my IMS hung over the past 3 months. I am not sure what
happened, as I do not see any errors in the Event Log. When trying to stop
the IMS, it timed out after approximately 15 mins with a message essentially
saying it could not be stopped. When trying to restart it, I get a message
saying it cannot be started in it's current state. Same thing happens when
I try to stop all the Exchange related services. I was talking with a buddy
who recommends lowering the max inbound and outbound connections, but mine
are set to defaults and just wondering if anybody else agrees, or disagrees,
with this thought. They are currently at default, which is 30 inbound, 20
outbound. Any other suggestions?

1) rerun performance optimiser.

or

2) Apply Service Pack 4.
Then rerun Performance Optimiser.

or

3) remove and reinstall the IMS. Repply service pack 3, then

Generally speaking, no it's not, but I am considering that IMS might be
processing too much mail, pegging out the processor, and somehow causing the
service to hang. This machine does do a few other network functions, ie:
WINS, PDC, STMP, but I don't think they stress the server either.

Not sure exactly what you mean by how the server is connected, but let me
see what I can do...

The server is connected directly to our network, soon to be put in the DMZ,
only has one nic, with current drivers. Not sure what else might be
helpful.

I noticed that mail stopped flowing on Monday morning, but the queue hung on
Sunday evening sometime after 5:30 as that was the last message I got. I
have not been able to find anything out of the ordinary in the app log, no
errors or warning relating to Exchange. I would be happy to show you a
screenshot, but I really don't see anything that looks strange.

List Charter and FAQ at:

Is the offline defrag my only choice?

2001-12-20 Thread Mike Zatkalik

Hello,

I am running Exchange Enterprise 5.5 SP3 on NT4 Enterprise Server. Before I
started at this company, the previous Exchange admin wasn't deleting ANY
mailboxes of old employees, which totaled approximately 11 GB that could be
deleted. My pub.edb is just about up to 50GB, which takes almost 9 hours to
backup, and I noticed after deleting roughly 4GB of old mailboxes, the edb
file was still the same size. I really need to shrink this edb file, as the
backups, and for that matter, the restore takes way too long. I am not 100%
certain of the best, or safest, method to complete this process as I keep
hearing conflicting stories.

1. Online defrag will free up the disk space, which is running nightly, but
it's not clearing up space for me. These people also usually say that never
run the offline defrag.
2. Offline defrag is the only method, and they use it on a regular basis,
meaning once per month/every other month.

Just looking for some more comments and/or concerns of doing the offline
defrag, since the nightly online defrag isn't doing anything to free up
space.

TIA,

~Mike Z

RE: Is the offline defrag my only choice?

2001-12-20 Thread Mike Zatkalik

Event ID 1221 says:

The database has 369 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation
has terminated.

If I understand what you are saying, I would only be freeing up 369MB of
whitespace by doing an offline defrag? My concern is that I have
approximately 350 regular mailboxes, 50 dl's and 50 cr's, and I can't
believe that I actually have 50GB of mail with 350 mailboxes. My 2 largest
mailboxes are just barely over a 1GB, and only 20 or so mailboxes are above
500MB. If I am missing something here, please feel free to correct me.

Thanks,

The online defrag defrags data within the file. It doesn't change the file
size.

What does event ID 1221 show in the application event log?

If the whitespace is significant, then perhaps an offline defrag would be
appropriate for you.

Just looking for some more comments and/or concerns of doing the offline
defrag, since the nightly online defrag isn't doing anything to free up
space.

TIA,

~Mike Z

Thanks for you input. I guess I should wait around and let this number
grow.

Thanks again,

That number is not exact. It would be the worst case scenario (ie the least
you would recover). There are separate 1221's for the pub and priv.

But I certainly wouldn't bother for 369MB.

Thanks,

Mike Z

The online defrag defrags data within the file. It doesn't change the file
size.

What does event ID 1221 show in the application event log?

If the whitespace is significant, then perhaps an offline defrag would be
appropriate for you.

RE: Is the offline defrag my only choice?

2001-12-20 Thread Mike Zatkalik

I guess I do need to correct myself. The file in question is my priv.edb,
NOT pub.edb. Logs, from what I understand, are not stored in the priv.edb
file. I am checking the properties on the priv file directly, so I do not
believe public folders, or logs are the issue. I just looked at the item
retention settings and did notice that it is set to 14 days, which I think
should be lowered to 7 days, but have to make sure that I can go that short.

With this new information, it makes a little bit more sense in regards to
the size of the file. What is the ideal time frame for this retention
period? Is my thought of 7 days too short? We do full backups on the
weekends and incremental nightly, obviously without circular logging
enabled.

Thanks again,

MZ
