RE: Mail Server Requires Authentication Bounce Message
Joseph, This seems to be a problem on the mail server receiving the mail. It's possible they have the authentication set to Basic and Integrated instead of Anonymous. I would inquire with the recipients mail admin to check and see if that is the case. Exchange 2003 SP2, Windows 2003 R2 (patched) A few times per week, users will report that when sending to 'one particular' email address - it gets bounced with the message below. Other outbound messages from the client at that time will go through. And at the same time if another employee sends an email to the same recipient it will go through. Each employee that experiences this bounce message is sending to a different recipient/domain; and they don't always get bounced. My research has revealed a number of old posts with the same problem but do not provide any solutions. I case of beer for the one who solves this for me - so I can sleep at night. RE: email archiving
Hi Paul, My environment is almost exactly as yours. We are a Non-Profit entity also. We have been using GFI Mail Archiver with SQL Server 2005 which has worked well, however some of the Exchange MVP's may state that Journaling is not a good choice due to the fact it could cause high CPU usage however we have not seen that occur in this environment...yet! YMMV! If I had it to do over again, I would choose another program. One I have looked at is from MailTrust, www.Mailtrust.com http://www.Mailtrust.com or you can go with the one offered by our host, Sunbelt-Software, which looks very nice indeed called, Sunbelt Exchange Archiver. You have to decide if you want to host your own archival solution or outsource. Both have their Pro's and Con's, the biggest negative being security of information in the email's archived if you outsource and loss of control. RE: email archiving
SEA doesn't use Journaling. Direct Archiving eliminates need for Journaling SEA provides a unique Direct Archiving feature that enables archiving of emails immediately after they are received. Direct Archiving is a significant breakthrough in efficient email archiving which eliminates the need for the Exchange Journal mailbox. Immediate archiving onto storage media improves the performance of the Exchange server, helps to ensure legal compliance, and diminishes the necessity to apply scheduler, threshold and quota archiving jobs. RE: Need some electronic fax recommendations
I'll second the Netsatisfaxtion recommendation. Their sales and support (especially the support) are very knowledgeable and quick to respond however, Brooktrout (now Dialogic) is another story. We had a problem with the TR114 board. They refused to acknowledge there was a manufacturing problem with the board itself, that is until I found other Brooktrout customers with the same problem and threatened a Class Action law suite to get them to replace the board which was still under warranty. They finally replaced the board with the next upgrade and we have not had a problem since then. Faxes coming in are converted to pdf's and e-mailed to reception that does the distribution manually, it can be set to print also but why waste paper! It also keeps all faxes in a folder for retrieval if necessary. Anyone with Outlook can fax by adding fax: and the number in the to: field. It has DID capabilities but I'm not using that. Many business communications are not supposed to touch 3rd party servers like this. ZIP and password protect it if you can. Many times, I just resort to allowing users to email large files due to one reason: If you actually send the file, you have PROOF they got it, and proof was sent to them. If you provide them an FTP Link or HTTP link, etc, you DON'T have any proof that the document was placed in their hands. Depends on the nature of your business, but to us that single factor alone is quite substantial. -Original Message- From: Don Andrews [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 09, 2008 12:40 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Attachment size limits We use Tumbleweed's Secure Messenger - basically a secure FTP like product with email notification wrapped in an email like browser based interface. OT: Thursday Funny: Computer gender
A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. 'House', for instance, is feminine: 'la casa.' 'Pencil,' however, is masculine: 'el lapiz.' A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?' Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether 'computer' should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men's group decided that 'computer' should definitely be of the feminine gender ('la computadora'), because: 1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic; 2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else; 3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and 4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it. (THIS GETS BETTER!) The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ('el computador'), because: 1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on; 2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves; 3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and 4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model. The women won. ~ Ninja Email Security with Cloudmark Spam Engine Gets Image Spam ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Ninja~

The Verbose text says that its a Local Policy Violation in relation to the the MAIL FROM command, which tells me that they have a policy (perhaps anti-spam related) that did not like who the message was coming FROM (aka your user). You may have triggered something in the recipients spam filter directly, or you may be on a black list (DNSBL). DNSBL rejections are typically more specific about which DNSBL provider list rejected you - but they don't have to. In any event, someone from your org needs to talk to someone from the recipients org and find out exactly why you are being rejected. I was so confused when, as a child, I moved from the deep south to New York and heard people talking about waiting on line. I kept looking at the floor trying to find the line they were standing on. Thankfully, a year later we left NY and headed south again! 15.) True Southerners never refer to one person as y'all. A pet peeve of mine. When Hollywood tries to imitate southerners, it has actors saying y'all to just one person. Drives me nuts. 16.) True Southerners know grits come from corn and how to eat them. With salt, and sometimes cheese. Never with sugar. 19.) Only true Southerners say sweet tea and sweet milk. Sweet tea indicates the need for sugar and lots of it - we do not like our tea unsweetened. Sweet milk means you don't want buttermilk. Actually, in a good southern restaurant you don't have to say sweet. If you order tea, it will be sweet-because why on earth would anyone want tea that WASN'T sweet?! 20.) And a true Southerner knows you don't scream obscenities at little old ladies who drive 30 MPH on the freeway. You just say, Bless her heart and go your own way. In the south, you can utter all sorts of insults without being considered rude if you follow them up with a bless his/her heart. For example, That Jane just isn't very bright, bless her heart or, Joe's collards always taste like dirt, bless his heart. ** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. RE: public folder replication question
This may answer your question Andy... Populating the New Server with Data Configure Public and System Folder Replication Before moving users you should configure the public folder data to replicate. This not only includes public folders but also system folders. If possible use the Exchange 2003 ESM (Exchange System Manager) as this is a little more advanced. When you open ESM on the Exchange 2003 system make sure you are looking at the original server by Right clicking on Public Folders and choosing Connect to and selecting the original server. Configure the public folders on the replication tab in ESM so that both servers are listed. Use the Propagate settings where appropriate to send the replication setting to the sub folders. If you have a large number of folders then you may want to look at the pfmigrate.wsf tool. More information on this script can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=822895 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=822895 However be careful with this script or setting large numbers of folders to replicate. That could generate high levels of traffic on your network and slow down the performance of your existing Exchange server. Upon trawling through the IMF, Antigen and Message tracking logs on the server their is no record of this e-mail being received by their system, and when the client resent the mail it came through instantly. As mentioned above during this time there was another client claiming that they were not receiving mail from our client, and when checking the message transfer logs it show that these e-mails were transfered to the clients Mail servers within minutes of our client sending them. I am looking to take the tack of explaining that throughout all the logs on our clients system there is no record of the mail being received by our clients mail servers, and the senders IT department have taken the attitude that there is no problem as all other mail is getting through. Is there any resource out their that can provide simple plain English, non technical explanation of why e-mail is not guaranteed, and i can add that we can only control and ensure that our clients mail server is working satisfactorily but if the mail isnt transferred to it there is nothing we can really do. With regards to the spam filtering, i am going to explain that no spam filter can 100% guarantee that there will be no false positives, but all mail detected as spam is quarantined and the quarantine is checked daily. WIth the lack of configuration options in Antigen and IMF, we will whitelist any legitimate senders that the filter has blocked as spam. The long term fix is when our client integrates with their parent company, they will change to using the parent companies mail servers and their spam filtering service through message labs, but there is no changes to software used that we are allowed to make short term. Again this would not normally be an issue, but an important e-mail sent from a client during this time was not received, and I am being asked to write a full report on what happend and why this one e-mail was not received and what will be done in the short term and longterm. Has any one else got any other suggestions, or tips on how to deal with the request. TIA Graeme -- Good News Everyone, you just received an e-mail from me. ~ Ninja Email Security

Uptime and Availability: After just one use of GOexchange, our information stores were reduced by 45-50% with thousands of errors, warnings, and inconsistencies corrected. Without GOexchange we would be unable to provide the current level of 99.999% uptime and availability to our customers. RE: to RSG or to not RSG
Well for GOD's SAKE don't use GoExchange. Sheesh! Bill, I've successfully done #1, but your situation may be different. What caused the problem in the first place? If you restore to the same datastore without correcting the problem that caused this in the first place, your only delaying another failure. Another solution would be to install Exchange on another box if hardware is available and restore to that, then redo the original box and migrate the users over gracefully. Performing an ExMerge could cause problems and loss of some email. By nature of how it works, Exmerge will not export an email within an email and some attachments as well. Your best bet is to restore to a different store. My 2 Cents! From: Bill Songstad (WCUL) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, January 23, 2008 11:38 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: to RSG or to not RSG I find myself needing to restore my entire datastore. The question is, is it better to: 1) Restore the database directly to the First Storage Group or 2) Restore to a recovery storage group and use exmerge to bring the data up to date or 3) Restore to a recovery storage group, dismount both stores and copy the recovered files to the live location or 4) Use an entirely different plan of which I'm as yet unaware It is perfectly acceptable to bring the datastore offline. What are the pros and cons of each strategy? My biggest concerns are stability and integrity of the final data, and total time spent by yours truly. I'm running Exchange 2003 SP2 and NtBackup. I'm leaning toward number 1, but that's probably because I'm more familiar with exchange 2000 than X2K3 and that was the only way then. Basically, they want to purge everything from all folders (system created and the many, many, user created folders) after xx number of days, with the exception of calendar, contacts, tasks and a few user defined folders (and their subfolders). Can mailbox manager policies do this? I've used them before for custom folders, and quite frankly it was spotty. My thought is to set a single policy for all users (this is a 25 mailbox organization) and set the proper settings for each system defined folder, add the custom folders and settings, then enable the all other folder setting. Should these settings flow properly? Also, I recognize that Exchange 2007 has vastly improved the abilities of this functionality and can certainly use this reason as a catalyst to upgrade, but I don't want to lie :). So if Exchange 2003 can do it, but Exchange 2007 can do it that much better, I need to be able to portray that. Any help is, as always, much appreciated. Don, I can take constructive criticism and welcome it if its done in a positive light, but classifying anyone as stupid just because they use a program you disagree with is very unprofessional. I DO know Exchange and how to use the utilities (manually), learned the hard way. I didn't want to use the program: 1. Because its grossly overpriced 2. I feel it is unnecessary if, like you say, you know how to administer Exchange. However, I was literally forced to purchase and install it for this company due to their experience with the last stupid administrator. Thanks for your comments anyhow. I'd suggest if you are so adamantly against such a program, you might want to contact them and express your feelings to them and provide hard evidence to disapprove the use of the program so that we can avoid having other stupid administrators in the world. HA!! Well, in my 19-20 years in this field, I agree it's been far and few between the number of times I have had to use the so called exchange utilities, however, when I came on board, this company was using DEMO backup software to backup files, but no Exchange backup so ANDY, you are correct, if a good admin has backups that are verified, there is no need for such a utility and it is like nails on a chalk board when I get the notification that GoExchange is getting ready to perform its' maintenance. Practically there is no real option to get a Exchange database repaired ? No Ese no isinteg so what ? GuidoElia HELPPC -Messaggio originale- Da: Michael B. Smith [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Inviato: giovedì 3 gennaio 2008 19.16 A: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Oggetto: RE: ISINTEG question. Urg. Non-trivial to explain. I tried to find a public document that describes some of what isinteg does on a technical level, but couldn't. Historically, isinteg was a debugging tool for PSS. It allowed them to scan a store and in the case of corruption, basically get rid of the offending piece of the store. This followed the I'd rather have part of my store than none of it philosophy. After a while, it made it into the standard release. Then, it was used primarily for patching stores that were reloaded from backup. Today, the primary use for isinteg is to fix-up a database after it has been repaired. ESEutil is not Exchange aware. Difficult to believe, huh? But eseutil just treats an Exchange store as any ESE database. And therefore its operations are generic in nature. It's up to isinteg to make sure that a given database is ready to be used by Exchange. It understand the various tables and specific B+trees and the consistency stuff and the split factors and the duplicate roots and the long value blobs, etc. etc. Under many situations isinteg can cause secondary indexes to be eliminated. It can cause both table splits and table merges that Exchange will undo the next-time it accesses a particular folder (because the Exchange store itself is load-sensitive - but isinteg cannot be). So...detuned. You'll have to regenerate secondary indexes (which Outlook calls Views). And your table structure may no longer be optimal under load, which Exchange will have to adjust in the future. I don't think that there are any current recommendations from Microsoft to run isinteg EXCEPT after a repair (or upon the recommendation of a PSS engineer). In fact, a quick scan of the knowledge base reveals that there are, in fact, problems with running isinteg on production databases - up to and including Exchange 2007! (Fixed in update rollup 3.)
