RE: Anybody Out There?
I saw Pink Floyd here in Houston when they were touring back in '94 I believe. I worked in a Sound Warehouse (before it became Blockbuster Music, and before it went out of business) so I was able to get tickets to all the good shows. They performed outside at Rice Stadium instead of the Summit, where the concerts normally were held. They played for about an hour and a half, doing new songs off of the album Division Bell. The visual effects, light show, sound - everything was incredible. Then it started to rain. Luckily my friend and I had expected it, so we brought our rain jackets. The stage was partially covered from straight down rain, but this rain had wind with it so it went sideways. After about 10 minutes (still playing), their mics and amps started cutting in and out. Then, all of a sudden, the tarp above the drumkit collapsed and a huge pouring of water crashed down behind the drumkit. Gilmour then went up to the mic and said Well, our instruments don't work anymore, so I guess this is goodnight! And they left the stage. They could have easily played another hour or two just on their older hits, but the night was cut short. Still memorable, though...:) Jay -Original Message- From: Ellis, John P. RE: Anybody Out There?
In '77 while still in high school I worked on pinball machines for a very big pinball company in Detroit. CBS Records called us and said 'We want some pinball machines in Madison Square Garden for an opening night party for Pink Floyd. This was the Animals tour. So I loaded up 4 pinball machines in a van, drove to NYC and up to Madison Square Garden. They send me up this ramp and I go up about 7 floors and find myself on this big rotunda behind the stage. Set up my machines in the party room, full back stage accessit was insane. Then their manager comes over and says he wants to keep the machines for all the dates that they are going to be there and to please move them to the dressing rooms. So I was there all week. It was insane. -Original Message- From: Jay Dale [mailto:jd...@xpresstel.com] Sent: Thursday, August 06, 2009 10:10 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Anybody Out There? RE: Anybody Out There?
Let see..details are a bit hazy. :) All the band members were actually very cool, I had some access to them as long as I wasn't an idiot, and just acted like one of the guys. One night I ended up in their dressing room for the after show party. I won't give details of that night. They were a very spoiled group of folks though. It was a non-stop party 24 hours a day. The rotunda behind the stage is massive. Floyd had 7 semi's of gear parked there. They decided they wanted a Hawaiian Luau. So they got a spot to park the 7 semi's and covered the whole rotunda in green indoor outdoor carpet. Brought in a catering company to fire up a giant Luau complete with dancing hula girls and all that stuff. Next day Waters decides he wants to take up golf. So they tear down the Luau and set up an indoor driving range and a big miniature golf course. I will give the managers and handlers credit. They could make the most amazing stuff appear in just a couple of hours. There were a huge number of people working there all the time. Easily a 100 doing stuff. I heard them say a bunch of times 'But the Stones got that on their tour we want it too'. It was a giant one upmanship with the Stones who had just been through town. It was about outdoing the Stones the whole time. -Original Message- From: David Mazzaccaro [mailto:david.mazzacc...@hudsonhhc.com] Sent: Thursday, August 06, 2009 10:46 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Anybody Out There? RE: Anybody Out There?
Yeah... I'm pretty educated on the band (history, members, etc). So the one-uping doesn't surprise me much. But that is still funny about competing w/ the Stones. Did you get any pics w/ the band? IIRC, the guys weren't really that into the hard partying scene... The fans however... ;) If you're a big fan, I recommend the book: http://www.amazon.com/Saucerful-Secrets-Pink-Floyd-Odyssey/dp/0385306849 And the must-see DVD Live at Pompeii: http://www.amazon.com/Pink-Floyd-Live-Pompeii-Directors/dp/BDBJDM/re f=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8qid=1249572020sr=8-1 -Original Message- From: Kennedy, Jim [mailto:kennedy...@elyriaschools.org] Sent: Thursday, August 06, 2009 10:56 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Anybody Out There? It's actually on the main level. It happens to be right above my mechanical closet where I also have my servers and switches housed. When it decides to blow, it will be a mess. Mebbe I should make a project of replacing the hoses with some high quality steel braided lines. Soon. The other thing that scares me is sump pumps. The greatest chance of me losing poser is during heavy storms. Yeah, when I replaced water heater I installed a pan with a drain to the sump to deal with eventual water heater failure. I've actually already looked in to the moisture detectors that work with home automation systems in order to kill the water supply via valve, etc... Now just to do it. Technically... Comfortably Numb's second line is Is there anybody IN there. However, Bring the Boys Back Home (which precedes CN on The Wall album) does end with the line Is there anybody out there? ...Ahhh the memories. -Original Message- From: Jay Dale [mailto:jd...@xpresstel.com] Sent: Monday, August 03, 2009 4:16 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Anybody Out There? But we wouldn't have a 10 message off-topic thread if I let things like that worry me, neh? ;-) ...Ahhh the memories. I regret that I never got the chance to see the real Pink Floyd. I did catch The Australian Pink Floyd Show http://www.aussiefloyd.com/ when it came around here, though, and it was quite impressive. People I was with who *had* seen the original said it was pretty darn close, except that the Aussie version lacked certain... scents in the air during the show. ;-) -- Ben
