I've had good luck with MS assistance as well and it is worth the money. Unfortunately MS was not able to help this time. I don't think there is anything available to recover the database but I wanted to investigate it first before I gave up hope. Hopefully a miracle will happen and someone will have a utility that might help. They are running with a database from Nov. 3rd so they didn't lose everything, only the last 2 stinking months of e-mail, but that makes a big difference to management.

thanks,

Yup...just went thru the scenerio described...my database went bad...only to
realize we were backing up the wrong info...spent 3-4 hours running all the
esutils with no luck...called MS support at 11:30pm (thinking there was no
way they could help me with no backups)...they had my Exchange up in 20
minutes...and worked to clean out the database thru the next day (I was so
so relieved..)...also taught me how to backup (correctly)...boy did I learn
a lot. Best $249.00 I've ever spent...saved my ass and my job.

My problem was being naïve...I had someone else in the dept who setup
the
auto schedule of the backups...he didn't realize that NT Backup was
exchange
aware...he ended up doing manual backups (thru scheduler) and backed up
the
wrong drives/folders/files...so when we tried to recover, all I could
find
was the bin files...all the edb files were on different partitions.

2002-01-10 Thread larry . manno

I had the same type of problem with a corrupt database with no good
backups. We worked with MS and ended up shipping them a tape with an
off-line backup of the bad databases and they were able to extract almost
all the email from it. Now at the same time the company had agreed to sign
up for a Permier support contract, (lots of bucks). So, if you talk to
the right people and have enough they can get mail out of the
database.

Unfortunately not this time. I don't know if they have the option of
taking the database and working on it but they did not offer that solution.
I believe the exchange database is so sensitive to corruption that there
isn't much that can be done once it is corrupted, unlike a SQL database. I
know SQL can be difficult to deal with but at least you can extract
individual tables to recover some data. I also don't like the fact that
the Exchange database relys so heavily on log files.

We received an event ID 123 with an error of -531. We also received a -1019 error
which microsoft refers to a hardware or software issue.

When we do a hard repair to the database then restart the Exchange services we can see
how many items belong to a folder and we can see all of the folders, default and
custom folders but we can not see the mail. the folders even state how many unread
messages are in the folder.

RE: Database recovery help

2002-01-10 Thread Todd Wood

Microsoft recommends an Exchange aware agent to backup a live database. Depending on
what software vendor you are using you should be able to purchase an Exchange agent so
you can do brick level backups and restores (brick level is to the mailbox level and
down to a single e-mail). I know CA's ArcserveIT has the agent and I think all the
other major players do too.

If you can afford that then you should do a flat file backup but that requires you to
stop the Exchange services then backup the priv, pub and dir.edb file. this only
allows you to restore the entire database instead of a single mailbox or e-mail.

I would hightly recommend the first option.

Microsoft recommends an Exchange aware agent to backup a live database.
Depending on what software vendor you are using you should be able to
purchase an Exchange agent so you can do brick level backups and restores
(brick level is to the mailbox level and down to a single e-mail). I know
CA's ArcserveIT has the agent and I think all the other major players do
too.

If you can afford that then you should do a flat file backup but that
requires you to stop the Exchange services then backup the priv, pub and
dir.edb file. this only allows you to restore the entire database instead
of a single mailbox or e-mail.

I would hightly recommend the first option.

I've had good luck with MS assistance as well and it is worth the money.
Unfortunately MS was not able to help this time. I don't think there is
anything available to recover the database but I wanted to investigate it
first before I gave up hope. Hopefully a miracle will happen and someone
will have a utility that might help. They are running with a database from
Nov. 3rd so they didn't lose everything, only the last 2 stinking months of
e-mail, but that makes a big difference to management.

But have never been successful at recovering more then pieces.

I suppose. There's always a cost. But I'll bet if Intel was in the same

A client of ours has a corrupted database that we attempted to recover with
Microsoft with no luck. I was wondering if anyone has any input on a 3rd
party utility that might assist us in recovering at least some of the mail?
I know restoring from backups would be the ideal solution but we don't have
that option, I know, I know, it's a long story but unfortunately we don't
have that option at this time.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

RE: Database recovery help

2002-01-09 Thread Todd Wood

I've had good luck with MS assistance as well and it is worth the money.
Unfortunately MS was not able to help this time. I don't think there is anything
available to recover the database but I wanted to investigate it first before I gave
up hope. Hopefully a miracle will happen and someone will have a utility that might
help. They are running with a database from Nov. 3rd so they didn't lose everything,
only the last 2 stinking months of e-mail, but that makes a big difference to
management.

thanks,

todd

Yup...just went thru the scenerio described...my database went bad...only to
realize we were backing up the wrong info...spent 3-4 hours running all the
esutils with no luck...called MS support at 11:30pm (thinking there was no
way they could help me with no backups)...they had my Exchange up in 20
minutes...and worked to clean out the database thru the next day (I was so
so relieved..)...also taught me how to backup (correctly)...boy did I learn
a lot. Best $249.00 I've ever spent...saved my ass and my job.

I thought MS, for the right price of course, could recover more of the data.

RE: ATTN: Fred Valdez RE: Database recovery help

2002-01-09 Thread Fred Valdez

My problem was being naïve...I had someone else in the dept who setup the
auto schedule of the backups...he didn't realize that NT Backup was exchange
aware...he ended up doing manual backups (thru scheduler) and backed up the
wrong drives/folders/files...so when we tried to recover, all I could find
was the bin files...all the edb files were on different partitions.

Fred, could you describe your backup routine pre-failure?
I have heard this problem many times, and just so curious what you were
